《Do You Like Skydiving?》1.04 - Crimson Sky

Inside Psycho’s Asylum, a subterranean headquarters located under an MMA gym, two friends howled with laughter. Cadell staggered around the purple lit room like a zombie. Elijah leaned against a poster of Naruto Shippuden, tears leaking down his eyes.
“Play the footage again,” Cadell wheezed. “I can’t breathe bro.”
A large hologram filled the spacious room, displaying camera footage of the masked robber barking threats. The men watched with eager eyes, waiting for a specific moment.
“There’s no turning back for me! The way things are now, I might as well end everyone in this--”
SPLAT!
Howls of laughter filled the room again. The cake projectile had hurtled in slow motion, smashing into the robber’s face with such a force that his neck snapped backwards. They watched the footage another three times before uploading the footage on multiple social media sites and their website.
Psycho’s Asylum was only one room out of hundreds in a 20-floor research facility called the Dome. Rows of bookcases filled with manga took up one half of the HQ, and too many posters of superheroes and anime stuck to the walls. Engraved on the ground were four bold, messy letters: “I will cleanse this city.”
“I take it you’re going Dimension 0,” Elijah asked, tugging a comb lodged in his afro.”
“What makes you say that?
“You used a quarter of your energy on an interdimensional chocolate cake?”
Cadell wagged a finger. “You’re a wise man.”
His eyes glowed purple as a black portal slowly materialized. A stabbing pain consumed him, forcing out a grimace until, eventually, he let out a long shuddering sigh.
“Sleep time. Great.”
Cadell woke up in a dark abyss comparable to the depths of the ocean. He wiped tears away from bloodshot eyes.

“Same old, same old,” he muttered.
The nightmares had begun with a brutal homicide before shifting to trauma linked to his superhero career. They happened every time he slept and were always vivid. No exceptions.
He stood up, staring into the darkness for hours. Maybe days. Maybe weeks. Not that it mattered. Time was frozen in Dimension 0. Or more precisely, time was not a concept.
From the world’s perspective, Psycho never slept. Most thought the superhero was a one man army who tirelessly fought a war that couldn’t be won. Most thought the shocking crime rate during the night would simply rise again once he was dead.
“But they’re wrong,” Cadell muttered, emerging from a portal leading to a rooftop.
He closed his eyes as a vicious headache finally grabbed his attention. It had always been present, intensifying whenever Cadell’s eyes turned purple, but he'd somehow learnt to ignore the agonizing pain by practicing in Dimension 0. Five years ago, it was a sign that he would lose control and massacre any living thing within sight, an atrocity his Ex-girlfriend had coined “Going Psycho.” Now it was a constant, harsh reminder.
Cadell listened to The Voice. Similar to the headache, it was ever-present. He ignored it most of the time because it vividly ranted of slaughter.
But sometimes, embedded within the bloodthirst, The Voice spoke the truth.
This city is cursed, boy. It must be cleansed.
Cadell opened his eyes to a crimson sky.

Blightbane
Miscellaneous Notes: - I want to see about making a crude map of Shroud to help readers. - I also want to get back to writing Coalescence updates. Schedule Notes: - None for now, updates when I can. [ Thank you for your patience and support as I improve my writing and storytelling abilities. I'm also using this story to better develop lore that extends far beyond it. ] Thanks to another exceptionally talented artist, Hiroeth, Blightbane now has an official cover! Vera was alone again. “You’re completely unprepared. Never before has sending one of you off made me feel quite so guilty.” Whenever she found herself in doubt, she would weigh her actions against the guiding principles of the one whom she revered. “When you don’t know the rules of the game, start making them up. When you are constrained by unfavorable conditions, inject a little chaos.” It was the supplementary message that concerned Vera the most. It was difficult to follow because it was intentionally vague and mired in subjectivity. “How can I enjoy myself when you look so tormented? Are we in danger?” Vera fell silent. An experiment is taking place on a planetary scale. Across the surface of the planet, a phenomenon referred to as "Blight" is spreading. Festering regions defended by fierce creatures called “blightbeasts” taint the surface, warping the land and proliferating unceasingly. Among the sentient creatures of the planet, it is the Blightbane Guild’s responsibility to stem the tide. They endeavor to cleanse the land in a struggle of attrition, but they are losing ground. A young man named Caim has been uprooted from his former life and transported to The Shrouded Theocracy, an isolationist nation with fanatical policies. He must struggle to survive with only an unfamiliar strain of magic to aid him. There is a secret to this magic. One he knows very little about. He intends to explore just what makes this magic special. On the far border of the theocracy, a mage scientist named Inis discovers a revolutionary new way to infuse strength from defeated blightbeasts. Using herself as a test subject, this process allows her to grasp magical concepts previously thought beyond her reach. Though she tries to document any side effects that arise, something escapes her awareness. She is playing with a dangerous force that will claim her most treasured asset if she isn't careful. Everyone and everything on the planet is a part of the experiment. The experiment is a lie.

Maitbudi
Fermboi was a man of one ideal: make the weak strong. When his rebellion against the king proved futile, he was given another chance at life. This time, he sought to do nothing after realizing the hopelessness of it all. Aventina wanted to do nothing more than to follow her father’s footsteps. On a retaliation raid against her tribe’s enemies, her brothers perished. Spared by a leader of her enemies, she returned home to find herself the chief of her tribe. Bolahulag, half-civilized and half-barbarian, half-lowborn and half-royal. Raised in his mother’s civilized tent in a sea of barbaric shelters, Bolahulag was hesitant to follow his paternal way of life. After a battle between a civilized king and his father, Bolahulag was sent as hostage to learn the economy and military of the nation his father defeated. Derai knew nothing more than being an orphan, but when a merchant took her in, the world she thought impossible soon became a reality. Monghe, stuck in a school exemplifying strength for most of his life, began to understand what he needed to do in order to be strong instead of weak. Story is mostly about nothing. Fermboi does most of the nothing. Aventina does most of the military things. Bolahulag does a balance of economy and military. Derai focuses on economy. Monghe spitfires what it means to be a typical hero. Hopefully this is enough to give a general idea to people who don’t like going blind aside from the work being purportedly “good.” Who am I kidding, my writing is terrible. I hope it improves though.
