Freya stepped back into the forest from the hill sim and felt amazing. The pain in her chest was gone. The feeling of being exhausted was gone. In fact, she felt as if she had just woken up from a really good night rest. She took a deep breath basking in being able to breathe without feeling any pain.

She spotted her drill instructor still sitting in her pink lawn chair. The drill instructor was talking to one of Freya’s fellow recruits. There were a few other recruits sitting on the ground by the drill instructor. Looking over at the console trees she saw a few people signing up for missions.

“Might as well do another mission.” Freya thought happily. She felt great now and the rewards were amazing. She had more than enough points to get Basic Infantry now. She was feeling greedy.

The last mission was to clear a town of suspected enemies. The mission had ten objectives and a completion task of clearing five houses. The reward was the same as the last two missions. There was four respawn available.

She chose the mission and was told to go to lobby four. She took that as a good omen because it was directly across from her console tree. She took a last look around her and smiled. She placed her hand on the lock and walked into the light.

The lobby she found herself in was mostly empty. There were a few people already sitting around but no one was looking at anyone else. Freya made her way to a locker and equipped her battle armor and weapons. She took a seat and looked at the monitor across from her.

There was a map of a street with a bunch of houses that were marked in red. Below the map was a list of directions. The first was to pick a recruit platoon leader. The second on the list was to choose positions then it listed the positions. The first position was the breacher. It explained that the person would force open the doors. The second position was called first in after that was the second, third, and fourth in. It warned that not clearing all five houses would be ground for failure. The climate was a rural environment with and the season is in the early summer. High heat with low precipitation.

Freya sat back and thought about the mission. The good news was that she had a bunch of chances to clear houses because of all the respawns. The bad news was that the sim was giving them so many spawns. She looked away from the monitor and looked up in thought.

“I think I was wrong about which was the hardest mission.” She thought to herself. “All I had to do in the first mission search and destroy, was keep my head down. The mission gave everyone all the skills they needed. The hill was really hard and there were only three survivors. Let's hope that the hill was the hardest mission.”

People slowly trickled in. Some looked happy others looked depressed. About fifteen minutes after Freya walked into in the lobby a tall pale man who looked like he grew up on a station with his wide eyes and tall thin frame entered the lobby. He stopped and looked around. He had a weird attraction to him.

“Has anyone picked up recruit platoon leader yet.” When no one said anything he nodded. “Ok, I’m the new recruit platoon leader then. We need squad leaders. Who here had passed at least one mission. Freya and two others raised their hands.

“Great, you guys are my squad leaders. Everyone else fall in behind one of your new squad leaders and pick your positions. Five to a squad and that includes the squad leader. I’ll lead one squad but if you come with me understand that we will strictly back up for the other squads if they get in trouble. Let's get to it people.” The new recruit platoon leader said to his new platoon.

Freya wasn’t the first person people picked for their squads but she wasn’t the last one either. She looked at her people. She had one big guy with a lot of muscles, two regular guys, and one other woman that was not from Freya’s company. She mentally added gave them positions.

“Big guy, you want to do the door kicking?” Freya asked the big man.

“Sure.” He said shrugging.

“I’ll be first in. Who wants to be second in?” She asked her squad. One of the average looking guys with blonde hair raised his hand. “Perfect.” She told him. The other guy with dark black hair chose to go third and the woman chose to go fourth leaving the breacher to go in last after he opened the door.

“If I go down, rank goes by positions.” Freya told her group. “You’re second up.” She told the blonde hair guy. Then she pointed to everyone in the line ending with the big guy being the last person in charge.

“Why do I have to be last in rank?” The big guy asked. Freya ignored him and sat down again. The big guy grumbled and looked around at the other squads that were forming but there was no room in the other squads so he sat down unhappy.

“Ok people listen up.” The recruit platoon leader said. “If you die do not go running back to your group. Wait at the pad bay they will come to get you once they are done clearing the house. Don’t worry as long as one squad member is still alive inside the house it will count for all members in the squad as being cleared. If you are in danger of being wiped don’t panic. Yell out for me. I and my squad will come to help you clear your house. We will both get the credit for the clearing. This mission is a timed mission though so don’t think about teaming up with other squads as we will not have enough time to complete all the houses before running out of time.”

Freya looked at the monitor and frowned. Nowhere did it say the mission was timed on the instructions. She looked back at the recruit platoon leader and wondered if he was a military prep school graduate. It made sense to her as she thought about it. He had taken command as soon as he arrived and got things organized really will in just a few minutes. If he was then she was glad. He would have trained on missions like this one many times.

“Ok, people follow me.” The recruit platoon leader said and walked into the blue light. Freya and her squad followed him. The big guy grumbled as he followed Freya but he still followed her.

Freya found herself walking out of the back of a spawn dropship. According to her download, it was a big ugly dropship designed to operate as a spawning bay once the ship has landed. The ship can’t carry any people or vehicles because of the four pods inside the ship. It has limited spawning capabilities though. The ship is limited by whatever Batk fluid it can carry and the amount of people that it has to respawns. Batk is the fluid that is used when printing a clone. The ship also has limited weapons and ammo printing capabilities. The ship is mainly used when there are a limited number of people on the mission and expected high casualty rate.

“Take your squad to the first house on the right.” The recruit platoon leader told her and then directed the next squad to the left.

Freya looked at the house that she was to clear. It was a three-story house that was pretty big in size. There was a porch in the front and a small green lawn that led up to the porch. The building had enough room on either side of it for a couple of people to walk side by side. Freya had a thought. It was a stupid though and it might be a really bad idea but….

“We going?” The big guys asked.

She turned away from the house to the blonde guy. Making up her mind she told him, “Grab anyone but the big guy and go around to the back. We will clear the outside first. You stay in the back until we clear the first floor. Shoot anyone who tries to run. Once the first floor is clear you come in and help clear the rest of the house.” Freya ordered him.

He nodded to her and motioned for the other woman in the squad to follow him. Freya waited until he was in the back and then she motioned for the big guy to kick down the door. He gave a roar and raised his foot and kicked at the door. The door crashed inwards and Freya rushed into the house with her rifle raised. She spotted two people on the couch. They were getting up as she came into the house. She must have taken them by surprise because their guns were on the coffee table in front of them. She fired at the first person putting a couple of bullets into his chest. She heard gunfire from behind her and the second man dropped. Freya’s kill count went up by one.

She went right, to the couch and circled around it making sure there was no one behind it. In the corner of her eye, she saw the big guy in the corner covering her. She spun around and looked at the rest of the room. The TV was on she noted but didn’t really pay all that much attention to it.

“Clear.” She called out.

“Stairs.” The dark hair man called.

“Clear.”

The blonde guy had his rifle pointed at the stairs leading up to the second floor. She motioned him to stay where he was and guard the stairs. She motioned to the big guy, who was standing in the right-hand corner, to follow her.

There were two rooms on either side of the living room. She chose the right-hand side room and walked towards it. She tired the door handle and it turned easily. She motioned for the big guy to open the door. She stepped back a few feet and aimed her gun at the door. Nodding at the big guy he opened the door hiding behind it and she rushed forward into a bedroom followed by the big guy. She looked left and spotted a door.

“Clear.” The big guy called out.

“Door.” She called out walking towards the door. She stopped several feet from the door and aimed her gun towards the door again.

She waited for him to get into position her gun at the ready. He pulled the door towards him and use as cover. She took a few steps forward but stopped.

“Clear.” She called out again. The room was just a shallow closet with a bunch of clothes hanging on a white pole. “Thought it might have been a bathroom but nope just a closet.” She thought to herself. She left the bedroom and walked to the other side of the living room to the other door.

“Crossing your line,” Freya said just before she walked in front of the blonde guy to get to the second room.

“Clear.” He called out and she rushed past him. The big guy followed her.

They repeated the exercise and Freya entered the room. It was smaller and was mostly empty with just a desk and chair. There was another closet but this one was empty. She left the room. Leaving the blonde guy to guard the stairs she walked down the hallway. She stopped by a door and looked at the big guy. When he nodded he opened the door and she rushed in. This time it was a small bathroom. She took a quick look around the bathroom including opening the shower door and looked inside.

“Clear.” She called out finding no one hiding in the bathroom.

The hallway ended in a very large kitchen. There were three doors on directly ahead of her that lead to the back yard and two on either side of the kitchen. She quickly scanned the kitchen as she passed by it to the back door. It was a big open kitchen with nowhere to hide.

She spotted a dead body laying on the ground just outside the back door. She smiled. She had been correct. She got the idea from a spy movie she had watched just before she had left to join the marines. She opened the back door motioned for the blonde guy and the other girl to enter the house. She kept her gun aimed at the right side door the entire time. The big guy was standing by the entrance of the kitchen using one of the counters for cover as he kept watch on the left side door.

“Clear the other room.” She told the blonde guy motioning towards the door she had been guarding. She waited until they were both inside the house and in position before she turned around and towards the door that the big guy was guarding. She stepped lightly to the right out of the direct line of fire. She crouched down and aimed her gun at the door. The big guy past behind her and walked towards the door. He wiggled the door handle and nodded at her. She nodded his head and he kicked the door in.

She rushed forward only to stop when she realized that the door led to some stairs that went downward. She kept her gun aimed at the entrance to the stairs that lead downward. “Cellar.” She called out.

The big guy backed up and got into a better position and settled down into a crouch. Behind them, Freya could hear the blonde guy clearing the room. When he was finished she felt a light tap on her shoulder and she moved forward. She paused at the stair and dropped to her belly. She scooted down the stair until she was past the ceiling of the cellar and aimed her rifle into the darkened cellar. The blonde guy passed her and rushed down the stair. He found the light switch and the other girl passed Freya.

It was only when he turned the light on that Freya realized how badly she was out of position. If anyone had been hiding under the stair she would have been shot and killed. The blonde guy searched the cellar and called out clear before returning to the stairs. She stood up and walked out of the cellar.

The rest of the squad walked with her back to the front room. The blonde guy was still guarding the stairs. He nodded to her and lowered his gun. He got into position behind her. Once everyone was ready she turned to walk up the stairs. The stair was a long two-story stair with a landing on the second floor and the third floor. She climbed up the stairs slowly trying to be as quiet as she could.

At the first landing, she whispered. “Big guy get up here. Second position will kneel here…” Freya said pointing to the edge of the wall, “... Big guy, you stand above him. On the count of three, you start firing.”

“I’ll come around you and charge down the hall with you.” She said tapping the dark-haired guy on the shoulder. “Once I’m past you big guy, you follow me. Then you follow him.” She said pointing to the blonde guy.

“You...” Freya said pointing at the other girl, “... Will stay here and guard against anyone coming down from the stairs. Questions?”

When no one spoke she move out of the way and let the blonde guy take her place. She waited for everyone to take their positions and then counted down. At one both men spun around the corner and started firing. She ran around them and charge down the hallway but there was no one in the hallway. She could hear the black haired man behind her. She stopped by the two doors on either side of the hallway. The door to the left was open the door to the right was closed. She turned to see her squad coming up behind her. She motioned for her and the dark hair guy to go into the room with the open door. She then pointed at the big guy and the blonde hair guy to go into the room with the closed door. Once everyone nodded in acknowledgment she turned back around. She took a deep breath and spun around the corner and into the room. The dark hair man right behind her.

The room was a bedroom with two large cots on the side of the room. There was a pile of clothes and trash in the middle of the room. Besides that it was empty. There was a closet but it was wide open and she could see there was no one hiding in it.

“Clear.” She called out. The dark hair man repeated her call. She turned around and looked behind her to another room on the opposite side of the hallway. She could see the blonde hair man and inside the room relax and called their room clear. There was two more room on the second floor. They clear both of the room and found no one else. Freya made her way back to the stairs.

“You can use me to do more.” The other woman told Freya in an angry tone of voice.

“Then pick a better position next time. The fourth position is the guard position.” Freya replied not looking at the woman. She peeked around the wall to look up the stair. She didn’t see anyone so she motioned for everyone to get into position. She charged up the stairs and stopped to take a quick look around the corner as she should have on the last floor.

The third floor was one big room. There was a bunch of reclining chairs with VR headsets resting on tables next to the chairs. There was one room towards the back of the house. It looked like a really small room.

“Maybe a bathroom?” She asked herself.

She stood up and walked into the room. She circled around the chairs making sure there was no one in them before heading towards the last room. She paused by the door and looked back to make sure everyone was ready. Seeing everyone nod she spun around the wall and pointed her gun into the small room. It was a bathroom.

Objective complete. Kill all the residents of the house.

Objective complete. Clear the first house.

“Awesome game room.” The black haired man said looking around.

“Comrade, your living in a game world.” The blonde hair man told him.

“Yea, but it would have been awesome to have something like this growing up.” The black hair man said looking around the room.

“Greedy, little man.” The blonde hair man said laughing as he heading back down the stairs.

They met the recruit platoon leader on the street just up from the house they had been sent to clear. “Good job guys. Here is your next house.” He told them.

Freya nodded and led her squad off to the next house. This house was a single story house that had a huge front lawn. There was a really expensive sports car in the driveway. The windows were blocked with thick white curtains. Freya paused just outside the house and looked over her squad. The angry girl still looked angry but everyone else was looking happy.

“Ok, same as before. You guys head to the back of the house. The rest of us will go through the front door. Questions?” She asked them.

The angry girl huffed and walked away. The blonde hair man followed her. Freya struggled not to smile. She nodded to the rest of them and headed towards the front door. She was halfway to the front door when she heard gunfire coming from behind the house.

The black hair guy started to run towards the back but Freya yelled, “No! Front door!”

The black hair guy stopped running and came back to the front door. The big man kicked the door in and Freya raced inside the house. The room she found herself in was a huge open room with the kitchen immediately to her left. Just past the kitchen was a very large living room with a huge sliding glass door with two windows on either side of them. All the glass was broken and shattered glass covered the floor. Standing with their backs to them were six men and one woman firing into the back yard. On the ground in the backyard, not moving, was both the angry girl and the black hair guy.

Freya pulled the trigger and dropped the man in the middle with the biggest gun. She saw the black hair guy from the corner of her eye step to the left of her and started firing. The big guy stepped to the right side of her and did the same. It was an execution. The men and women never had the chance to turn around and defend themselves. They just died under a hail of bullets. Freya’s kill count rose.

The black hair guy took a step towards the back yard but Freya stopped him. “We clear the house first. There is nothing we can do for them right now.”

The black hair guy turned to her and look really angry but his anger faded slowly and he nodded. She motioned him to guard the door to the right and waved at the big guy to follow her. The big guy broke the door down and she rushed in only to find herself in a very small hallway at connected three room. One of the room was a bathroom and was directly across from the door the big guy kicked in.

She motioned the big guy to go to the left and she went right. The room she entered was a large taken up almost completely with one large bed. She circled around the bed but didn’t see anyone else. She pulled the closet door open and check inside. Aside from clothes, there was nothing there. She walked out of the room as fast as she could and met the big guy in the hallway.

“Ok, we got this you check them out,” Freya told the black hair guy as she made her way to the other door. There were only two rooms on this side of the house. She and the big guy cleared the rooms in a few seconds.

Objective complete. Kill all the residents of the house.

Objective complete. Clear the second house.

“They're dead.” The black hair guy said as Freya and the big guy walked out of the house.

“Ok, lets head back to the dropship and see if they re-spawned yet,” Freya told them and turned and left the house.

There was a squad already at the ship waiting on four of their members to re-spawn so they had to wait for their people respawned. Five minutes later both of Freya’s squadmates were back. The angry girl was still angry but the blonde hair guy looked scared. Freya led the team back down the street again.

This house the recruit platoon leader assigned them to was a small two-story building with a garage. When she sent the angry girl and the blonde hair guy this time they took it seriously with the blonde hair guy walking with his gun at the ready position and the angry girl following him backing him up. Freya sighed in relief. She got in position by the front door and the big guy kicked the door in.

She rushed over past the big guy and found herself staring at a man with a shotgun pointed at her. She didn’t even have time to pull the trigger on her gun before there was a loud bang and she was thrown back right out of the house. She landed on the hard cement walkway.

Pain unlike she had ever felt before struck her chest as she bounced on her back from the fall. She found herself staring up at the clouds as she struggled to breathe. She raised her arm in panic. She blood rush up from her chest into her mouth. She tried to spit the blood out but there was too much blood. Her vision started to turn dark around the edges. In a pure panic, she tried to call out for help but nothing but blood came out.

Her vision faded to completely back but she could still hear. She heard the black hair guy said, “No, clear the house first. It’s what she would want us to do. She’ll respawn.” She heard someone else say something but it was hard to hear. The squad's voices slowly got softer until she could not hear them anymore.

Freya gasped away looking around in panic. She only relaxed after she saw her reflection and realized that she was in a pod. “Why the hell am I in a pod?” She asked herself hitting the pod door release.

Objective complete. Kill all the residents of the house.

Objective complete. Clear the third house.

You have died. Cost of respawn: 0 credits.

She found herself naked in the pod bay with three other guys. They paused what they were doing and stare at her. Cursing she went to the locker and equipped her armor and retrieve her weapons. As she did and remembered where she was and why she was in the pod in the first place. She remembered dying.

She left the pod bay and found her squad waiting for her. They were all staring at her. She wondered what she looked like as they examined her face. Pushing her feelings down she smiled at them.

“Well, that sucked.” She told them and led them back down the street. They laughed and followed her.

The next house they were given was a single story brick house. As before Freya sent the not so angry girl and the blonde hair guy around to the back and then got ready into position. She nodded at the big guy and he kicked the door in. She turned and woke up looking at her reflection in the window of the pod.

Objective complete. Kill all the residents of the house.

Objective complete. Clear the fourth house.

You have died. Cost of respawn: 0 credits.

This time she remembered everything right up until she turned to enter the house. She wondered if she had forgotten it or had she just died that fast. Covering her privates she hit the door release and quickly equipped her armor. She turned around and huffed at the guys that were all looking at her. Grabbing her gun she walked off the dropship.

“Anyone want first position. Hell, I’ll even give up squad leader to anyone who’ll take my position.” She asked her squad when she found them at the bottom of the ramp waiting on her. They all looked away. She cursed and led her team back up the street.

The recruit platoon leader was not there so Freya chose a house that was red and led her team to the house. The house turned out to be a single story tiny house that had a lot of land around it. In the back of the house, she could see the edge of a really big lake. She sent the not so angry girl and the blonde hair guy around the house as usual and took up her position by the front door.

“I swear if I get killed again I am going to kill somebody,” Freya muttered angerly as she raised her gun. That got a chuckle from the others. The big guy kicked the door and Freya rushed around him and into the house. She found herself between two rooms. To the left were a tiny but very neat living room with a couch and a tv. To her right was a small dining room with an old fashioned wooden table. She turned left as she responded to the downloaded training on tactic she had received.

She rushed into the tiny living room then stopped. There was nowhere to hide in the tiny living room. The couch was pushed up against the wall so that the back and its side were up against a wall. The tv was hanging down from the ceiling in front of the window. There was a plant in the far left-hand corner but it was a really small plant.

She turned around and saw the dark haired man looking around the dining room and the big guy standing a wall his gun pointed down the hallway to the kitchen. Freya walked around the big guy and led him down the hallway towards the kitchen. She didn’t enter the kitchen though as the dark hair guy entered the kitchen from the dining room. Instead, she turned to her left and found herself in a large living room that faced the back of the house and the lake.

She waited in the large living room for both the less angry girl and the blonde hair guy to enter the house. She led the way past the large living room and to the right where there were three rooms that were closed by a door and an open bathroom that had some tacky fishing stuff hanging on the wall. She quickly looked into the bathroom but there was no one there. She turned to the first door and nodded to the big guy.

He kicked the door in and she charged in. She found herself in a nice bedroom. She circled the bed and checked the closet but didn’t find anything. Stepping outside the room she found the next door open and the less angry girl and the dark haired guy inside checking out another bedroom. She lined up on the last bedroom and nodded to the big guy.

Once again he kicked the door in but this time it took two tries. Freya rushed by the tired man and entered the empty room. She searched for the usual places and found nothing. She opened the door to the master bathroom and nearly died.

There was an older man inside with a really old gun. He fired and the bullet went over Freya’s head. She fired back and the old man rolled off the toilet. She fired a second round into the man's back but he didn’t move.

Objective complete. Kill all the residents of the house.

Objective complete. Clear the fourth house.

Bonus objective: A squad is in danger of being overrun. Aid the squad with their objective. One of the squad members needs to survive. Timed objective. Time remaining 4:41.

There was a flashing house on Freya’s HUD map. She looked up at the rest of the squad in question. “You guys up for this.” She asked them.

“Not really but let's do it.” The angry girl said shrugging.

Freya led the team out of the back of the house and down the street. It wasn’t hard to find the house. It was the one where the gunfire was coming from. The house was one of those cheap temporary housing shelters. Someone had turned one of them into a house on the side of a lake. The house was thin and long maybe about seventy feet long and maybe fifteen feet wide.

“It has a great view of the lake behind it though.” Freya thought to herself as she ran up to the house. The rest of her squad following her.

She heard the sound of the crappy marine gun firing to the right-hand side of the house. From the left was a bunch of unfamiliar gunfire that was really close to where the marines were gunfire was coming from. Looking at the cheap house Freya got an idea.

“Line up beside me,” she told her squad. When they did she opened fire into the side of the house. Her squad fired right along with her putting bullets through the wall of the house. She ran through three magazines and got two kills. She held up her hand to call for a cease-fire. Her squad gunfire slowed to a stop.

“Anyone alive in there?” She yelled into the house.

“No one but us mice!” Came the reply from the marine side of the gunfight.

“Friendlies coming in. if you shoot us I’ll will be upset.” She told the trailer and lined up her squad. She didn’t have anyone go around back because she was worried that if a gunfight broke out again she didn’t want anyone to get caught by a stray bullet.

The big guy opened the cheap door and Freya rushed in. To her right, she spotted a Marine’s gun aimed down a hallway. She glanced around the living room then headed to the wall right before the hallway. The rest of her squad piled in with her.

The Marine left the back room and walked up to her. “Thanks, guys and gals. I’m the last one still alive. I really didn’t want to fail this stupid sim.”

“What happened?” Freya asked.

“A crap ton of people. They got us in an ambush and took out most of my squad. Me and another guy made to the backroom but got he caught a bullet in the head and he’s now waiting on his turn on the pods.” The guy said.

“Ok, get in line. Let's finish this.” She told him.

She found a lot of bodies of the enemy and only found one enemy alive. He was added to her kill count. The squad cleared the house.

Bonus objective complete. You have successfully given aid to a squad in danger of being overrun. Report in at the staging area.

Freya smiled when she saw the blue box. She led her squad plus the one extra guy back to the dropship. She found the recruit platoon leader by the back of the dropship. He was talking to another soldier. Freya waited until he was done then reported in.

“Thanks, O’Malley, for saving that last squad. You might have saved everyone's bonus. I was already saving another squad so I couldn’t respond. The good news is that everyone is reporting in. No failed objectives so far. There are only two squads left that need a house to clear. Cross your fingers.” The recruit platoon leader said smiling.

“Cool,” Freya said not really caring about the bonus. She wandered over to where her squad and the one extra marine was sitting and laid down.

“What did the big pajama want?” Asked the not really angry anymore girl.

“What?” Freya asked looking at the other woman.

“The recruit platoon leader. What did he want.” She asked Freya.

“He wanted to thank us. Seems like we might have saved the bonus the platoon might get for no one failing an objective.” Freya muttered.

“We can get bonused?” The blonde hair guy asked.

“Yea, if you do stuff like having the highest kill count and so on,” Freya said closing her eyes. Getting killed a few times was really tiring.

“You did you get a reward before?” The new guy asked.

“Yea, a few times. First was the highest kill count.” She told them.

“What other bonuses did you get?” Asked the girl that was getting a little upset.

“Oh geez, I got one for the highest kill count. Then I got another one for taking command of a squad than on to taking command of a platoon. I got a discount coupon on my template gun by surviving until the end of the mission hill 749. Stuff like that. Whoever took command of the squad when I kicked the bucket should get the bonuses for that.” Freya said not opening her eyes.

“Man if I knew that, I would have taken command of a squad or be the platoon leader.” The big guy muttered.

“The recruit platoon leader has a bigger bonus,” Freya told him.

“I wish my drill instructor told me that!” The big guy said sounding angry. “How did you find out? You one of those military prep kids?”

“Nope. I was just a better aim than the rest of my platoon.” Freya said forgetting about the bonus she got from being in the point position in her platoon.

You have completed the last objectives, clear a town of suspected enemies. You have successfully completed the mission. Please return to the lobby

“Well, it’s been, fun guys,” Freya said opening her eyes. “See you when I see you.” She told her squad. She got up and made her way into the side door of the dropship. She walked through the door and into the light.
