《Blood-Forged》Chapter 35

When night fell I realized with no small amount of annoyance that we never actually got to sleep in the inn, nor buy supplies. Once more we were forced to lay directly on the grass under the stars.
There was a farm with a few little houses not too far away. Death-Bringer had tried to suggest asking for hospitality but the fear of being vulnerable around humans while still a bit injured and with Gale in sword form was not outweighed by the possibility of a roof over our heads. And so I fell asleep, one hand on the cold metal of Gale’s blade...
I woke up with my cheek pressed against warm, bare skin rather than dew-covered grass. I jerked fully awake, finding myself trapped in place by Gale’s tangled limbs. The bloody scraps of clothes that had been wrapped around his blade were now haphazardly wrapped around his body, not doing much to cover him at all. With my ear pressed to his chest I could hear a slow, steady heartbeat and soft, gentle breathing. My hands twitched as I shifted, moving slowly until I could press my palms flat against his back and feel smooth skin... not one sign that he had been stabbed so many times. Feeling my leg still throbbing with pain I couldn’t help but find it a bit unfair.
With the strength of purpose I managed to push Gale away and extricate myself from his limbs. Once free, I looked up to see Death-Bringer smiling knowingly at me. What she presumed to know I had no clue. ”What?” I snapped. Apparently too loudly since Piercing Gale started to stir on the ground next to me. He sat up abruptly, eyes flitting around, tension in his body easing slightly when he met my eyes and my heart felt a little squeezed. “What happened? Are the villagers alright? Night Lover? Is the demon dead?”

Stolen novel; please report.
“Demon’s dead. Night Lover went his own way... The villagers are assholes.”
Piercing Gale raised an eyebrow, “assholes?”
“No one was seriously hurt.” Death-Bringer answered for me, “but they weren’t exactly grateful to us so we couldn’t stick around to get supplies, including...” She pointed at him, her finger slowly trailing down.
His eyes followed her finger and he looked down, his whole body twitching when he saw his nakedness. He hurriedly tried to arrange the shredded, bloody remains of his clothes to better cover himself, blushing deeply, “why am I...?”
“You were a sword.” I helpfully supplied.
Piercing Gale frowned for a moment before realization dawned on his face... Then he frowned again, “am I just supposed to walk around naked until we make it to the next town?”
I looked past him to the small scattered cabins where someone was hanging up laundry on a line.
Soon we were on the road again, Gale grouchily wearing a stolen outfit in style much more similar to mine than what he had been wearing previously.
After a few days of travel, we reached the border between Kon and Xoran, buying what supplies we could afford from smaller settlements along the way. The village that surrounded the bridge over the river to Xoran was the biggest town we’d been in since the demonically controlled one so of course... it had a similar, sinister presence.

The Imagineer's Bloodline
The Big Picture The nature of evolution is to move slowly. Until it doesn’t. If humanity approached an evolutionary crisis… Would we know it? Bendik is a once-in-a-millennia genius. He does. He recognizes quantum computing will be the catalyst. More, he knows there are only three potential outcomes for homo-sapiens: evolution, enslavement, or destruction. Bendik's plan: trigger rapid human evolution, make rogue Quantum Intellect catastrophes impossible, and change the nature of human civilization forever. What's happened so far in Book 1 - link to first book Bendik perfected the world's first Quantum-core processor, decades before anyone else. However, his plan to trigger human evolution is complicated and it only now nears completion. At the same time, Ronanld Linkletter, a brutally self-serving competitor closes in on his own Quantum breakthrough. Bendik's catalyst, a globe spanning marvel of engineering nears completion. For his plan to work, he needs to train millions of people without tipping off the powers that be. His son Austin has the solution: an immersive game world indistinguishable from the real world, where playing can heal trauma, activate advanced, dormant DNA, and unwittingly train Bendik's millions. Planet Kuora is born and under the care of Elle, Austin's homo-empathic QI, it flourishes. After creating wholly unique avatars, endowed with Equilibrium powers, Austin's team and a second team led by Oliver Ward, a retired special forces operative, have entered Kuora. They are enthralled by Kuora, discover its history of power and betrayal, are set on quests to discover why the Pergothian Empire fell, and discover a hidden attribute system that grants extraordinary powers but can only be revealed through self-discovery. Book one leaves Austin's team poised on the brink of entering an ancient Breal Bloudran ruin. On Earth, Bendik hits a roadblock and needs help, but he can't risk exposing his project. His solution? Disguise advanced polymeric molecular math as the backdrop for his node tower construction ads. At the site in Medellín, Colombia he hits pay dirt. We meet Gideon Suarez. Gideon welcomes Bendik to the Imagineers. He has lived many lives, and he has been waiting for Bendik. Chapters posted here are the 2nd & 3rd Books in the Ascendant Earth Chronicles. Parallels
Parallels are a constant in life. Our friends' lives often run parallel to ours; we share similar experiences or tastes- perhaps even both. Sometimes, however, opposites attract- and our lives run perpendicular. In that case, we are not attracted by similarities; rather, we are attracted to the differences in others. So, what happens when two parallels are broken apart? What might happen to them? Are they forever doomed to run alongside each other, never seeing one another, never meeting? Or, perhaps, might they be spun about? Could these lines that formerly ran alongside one another meet? Could they possibly be set perpendicular? Any feedback is welcome, so long as it is constructive. Also, you may not use any characters, ideas, places, or what have you that I present here without my explicit permission. A note: This is a story which I began over a year ago, but never got around to finishing- it feels about time to really get it going. Now, there are a couple of things about the story, and myself, that need to be said. First and foremost, there's a slow start, but by the third-fourth chapter things should be speeding up a bit. Secondly, in regards to release speed and/or word count per chapter, I make no promises- my schedule is fairly random, and in regards to word count, I will cut off any chapter at any point that feels appropriate to me- that may include cliffhangers, if necessary. I'm not trying to reach a specific word count, I am trying to create a cohesive story, with pseudo-appropriate chapter breaks. This means I will also not rush a half-baked release for the sake of getting a release out. Thirdly, I will make any edits, anywhere in the story and at any time, that strike me as necessary- typically being wording and/or formatting changes, but I may also decide to change major plot points- in that case I would put a notification in the next chapter released. Finally, and most importantly, I am a Christian; this story is intended to at least moderately reflect those values. So, if you particularly dislike any of these things, feel free to look elsewhere, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. God bless, friends.
