《Chronicles of Kyr》Book Lost(2.5), Chapter 26 Trouble with computers

Kyrion’s first day at school started and ended with a bang. Sadly, both bangs were not from a fight breaking out, but to say he wasn’t at fault would be wrong. However, we will start from the beginning.

Kyrion and Kilo were dropped off at the front office, where Kyrion was supposed to receive his schedule when one of the PCs suddenly caught fire. It didn’t start smoking and explode; no, there was a sudden configuration, and the system was fried.

“Uh…Is that normal?” Kyrion asked Kilo.

“Did you do that?” Kilo whispered.

Kyrion started to shake his head and sighed…Calling the young artificial mind back into his eye.

[Sorry」 the odd creature intoned through electronic signals.

The resulting fire was put out rapidly via a device in the ceiling—too rapidly, as not even the smoke alarms had a chance to go off.

“Seems we’re going to need a minute to process what just happened. Feel free to shadow your cousin today, Mosley. {Mosely}

“It’s pronounced Moss-Lay, where the moss lay. My father chose that as his family name.”

“I will endeavor to remember it.”

“Sure…Kilo, I smell breakfast.”

“First go to this room and give them this paper.”

Kyrion took the slip and headed to the room next door, where his picture was taken, where he was given a piece of paper.

“Now for the second breakfast.”

“You should be full after eating all of those pancakes. Not to mention the eggs and sausage.”

“Yes but I smell an oat-based slop. I haven’t had that since I was little.”

“Oatmeal?”

“With protein chunks and other vitamins in it. Although it seems this slop just has the vitamins.”

“Do you have the nose of a bloodhound?”

“Don’t be silly, bloodhounds smell blood. Not food.”

“I mean, can you detect sausages from a mile away?”

“Over a hundred if I’m really hungry, if it’s being smoked, then even further. Why?”

Kilo snickered.

Kyrion, who was totally not paying attention to another group of people walking in the opposite direction, bumped into someone.

“Hey! Watch where you’re going.” Said a young man in a green and black letterman jacket with well-built musculature.

Kyrion eyed the blond kid with green eyes that didn’t match his vibrancy. In his experience, it wasn’t often that he met someone on eye level with a somewhat similar build to him, with the exception of a lack of magic anywhere in his body.

“Hmmm? Huh. First time I come to city where others tall like me.” Kyrion said with a bad barbarian accent.

“Are you trying to talk dumb?” The blond put a hand on Kyrion’s shoulder to hold him in place and scowled, letting go just as quickly.

“He’s from another country. English isn’t his first language.”

Kilo eyed the young man from his modest height. In a fight, Kilo could easily win ten out of ten, but doing so would draw the wrong attention.

“Uh huh…That was true but also false at the same time.”

Kyrion smiled. “You’re pretty perceptive, a shame you don’t seem to show your own body that level of attention. You’re nearing your limit. I recommend adding another rep of calf lifts or whatever you do to stretch out your hamstring. Wouldn’t have bumped into you if you didn’t have a limp.”

The young man’s eyes widened as he leaned forward. Out of shock, he realized that a familiar jolt he’d been feeling lately was gone.

“What do you know?”

“We have similar builds. I know that you’ve been neglecting certain muscles due to strain. I recommend not doing that anymore. A torn ACL is a pain to deal with.” Kyrion waved and continued forward.

“Peter? Why was he talking about a torn ACL? Is this related to why the coach had you sit out during practice?”

“There was a scare.” Petter tapped his leg a few times and shrugged.

“You’re the fastest one on the field.”

“I said it’s fine, Isaac. Although it’s a shame, someone like that could have done pretty well on that team. He could have knocked me over. He’s denser than he looks, I’ll talk to the coach about him.” Peter sighed.

“I thought you were going to fight him…”

“Listen, I have no time to get into fights with someone who has more strength than I do. If I get hurt or suspended. I can kiss my college career goodbye.”

“Understandable.” Isaac looked back at the other brown-skinned kid and looked at his arm with a calculating gaze.

Kiro slapped Kyrion on the arm to get his attention. “What did you do? I sensed something odd.”

“Fixed something that was about to break.”

“That quickly?”

“I have plenty of experience fixing things like that. I’ve done it to my own things as well.”

“So that's how you knew. Also I recommend this.” Kilo put a brown carton of something cold onto Kyrion’s plate.

“Exactly.” Kyrion had a styrofoam plate stacked with food that he took to the lunch lady.

“Right.”

The lunch lady looked at the plate and then at Kyrion and shrugged. “You do know that will cost extra. Right?”

Kyrion handed the woman a hundred dollar bill.

Kilo sighed. “I’m going to need to take you somewhere you can get some twenties.”

The lunch lady nodded, shaking her head.

“What’s a twenty?”

“A fifth of what you gave her. Do you not know about smaller bills?”

“It’s the same as a gold coin, right? Anything smaller is feed for the pickpockets.”

“This…Where are you even getting money. You don’t have a wallet.”

“I have a partnership with a certain Billy Dee.”

“The artist? I, mean he could probably afford to keep you fed–”

“I didn’t know, Goat Face was an artist. Well I guess it is an art that he does..”

“That's rude…oh. The candy maker. I wonder if he took that name by accident or on purpose.”

“No idea. What's this? It looks disgusting.” Kyrion held up the brown box.

“Chocolate milk.”

“Does it come from chocolate cows?”

“Those don’t exist.”

Kyrion tasted the substance as a smile grew on his face and he began to float.

Kilo put a hand on Krion’s shoulder and pressed him down.

“I must have all the choco milk!” Kyrion said all too loudly, the pupils of his eyes turning into vertical slits.

“Easy tiger.”

“Ander’s the tiger, I'm …I guess I’d be the dragon.”

A girl with brown hair sat down at the table for no apparent reason.

“Friend of yours?” Kyrion asked Kilo.

Kilo shook his head. “No, I think she’s one of those cheerleaders.”

“I have no idea what that means.”

“I am not one of those cheerleaders. Cool contacts by the way.”

“Whats a contacts?”

“His eyes are natura.. Umm…”

Kyrion sighed, closing his eyes for a moment as the AI running around decided to slow down. “My eyes dilate strangely sometimes, it's a family condition from my homeland.” The condition was real, but rare to inherit.

“Smooth, I’m curious, what is someone like you doing with Stone Cold Kilo.”

“When did I get a nickname?” Kilo asked in a monotone.

“When you started ending conversations before they could start. So is he your–?”

“Cousin.”

“Brother.”

“Why the confusion?”

“Adoptive brother, former cousin. There are complexities I‘d rather not speak on. Why is someone as boring as you asking me questions?” Kyrion attempted to irritate her.

“Because you look like someone I met recently. Although it may have been a dream.”

“I see. I really hope I don’t show up in your dreams anymore then.”

“You have a pretty face for a guy. Too pretty, why is that?”

“Genetics and effort. Can you go now?”

“Are you single?”

“No, there’s a girl back home.”

The dark haired brunette sighed.

“Theater! You’re in the theater course..”Kilo stated in confidence.

“Wrong again.”

“I have seen you somewhere.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“I think I’ve seen you before as well.” Kyrion opened up his senses and raised an eyebrow. She was the girl whose heart he replaced. She looked healthier, sadly Kyrion would never fall for something like that.

“Where would you have seen me?”

“You were on that T.V show, with the talking cat that loves hamburgers.”

“Cheeseburgers. I can see it too. Now that you mention it.”Kilo nodded to himself.

“I don’t know if you're messing with me or not. I have been informed that certain Janitors have me under surveillance.”

Kilo didn’t so much as flinch.

Kyrion put on a face of innocent concern. “If they are staring too much you should file a complaint with the school. If anything happens to you I will be sure to tell the authorities that those janitors probably did it.”

“I think I may have confused you with someone else.”

“It’s highly likely. As I don’t recall meeting anyone like you.”

“You're just as cold as your brother.”

“Glacier.” Kyion moved to take off invisible sunglasses.

“…” Kilo was oddly quiet.

“Alright, well if you change your mind, come to room G134 afterschool. My name is Mira.” Mira then stood up and left the table. Probably headed to class as far as he was concerned.

Kyrion waved goodbye and sighed.

“Why did your not heart increase in beating the second she appeared in your vision?”

“H-huh?” Kilo’s voice cracked.

“I’ll just ask your dad, later.” Kyrion eyed the robotic left arm preparing to release it’s restraints.

“I will cut you if you do that.” Kilo seemed physically ready.

“Fine, sheesh. Don’t out yourself over a girl you tried to shoo away.” Kyrion drew a sound distortion ward on the table and surrounded the two of them. It would fade when he left.

“Have you met her before?”

“I gave her a new heart. She didn’t have much time. A month or two, if unchecked and a sudden and surprising death.”

“Is that why you turned her down?”

“I had many reasons. That, you, and I do already have someone.”

“I don’t get you.”

“I’m on an unwilling vacation. Now then what's our first class?”

“Advanced Calculus.”

“I hate math.”

Despite claiming to hate math. Kyrion proved to have a better grasp than the others in the class. At least that's what the napping he was doing in the back of the class told them.

“If this class is so boring Mosely, why don’t you solve the questions on the board?”

“42, 27, 5, for the missing variables. From left to right.” Kyrion glanced at the board briefly before putting his head back down.

“That is correct, care to show your work?”

“I don’t know why I know, I do know that sharing my methods would be an exercise in insanity. A friend of mine used to double check said calculations before leaving me alone.”

“Show me.” The older teacher stated.

“C is a cow, F is the farmer, and D is the amount of dairy produced. Y is the yearly yield.”Kyrion drew pictures of a cow, a man and a bucket of milk. The cow interacted with the farmer, then the farmer interacted with the buckets of milk. Using the variables he came up with while half asleep he showed his work.

“Huh, why are you in this class?”

“Because I'm shadowing my cousin today. There was a scheduling issue.”

“That would explain why you think it’s a waste of time, this is a midterm level question.”

“Oh, not a waste of time. I just have better focus when half conscious. It’s an idiosyncrasy that has annoyed many teachers prior to an incident.”

“If it works it works.”

Thus math ended with the handing out of homework. Kyrion would do said homework while in his next class.

The next class was full of computers. Which gave Kyrion a massive headache as his eye tried to swan dive into the system.

“What's wrong?” The computer science teacher asked.

“Headache, It feels like my eye is trying to jump out of its socket.”

“Do you need to head to the nurse?”

“What class is this anyway?”

“Computer Science. Although it's not a beginner course. You’ll be doing a lot of catching up unless you decide to pick another course.”

“Just shadowing today. I likely won’t be in a course like this.”

「 No! I’ll be good」The creature in his eye intoned.

“Now you wanna listen?” Kyrion felt a nod from the creature in his eye which caused his prosthetic to bob briefly. It then calmed and began to listen.

“Excuse me?”

“My headache seems to be fading.” Kyrion’s expression was irritated.

“Oh! Well that's good. Do you need any assistance logging in?”

“Logging in?”

“Do you have your username and password?”

“Nope.”

The teacher printed out a sheet of paper and handed it to Kyrion.

It was a step my step instruction manual for logging in with his information written on the side.

It still took Kyrion ten minutes to log in, mostly due to accidentally hitting the caps lock and not realizing that it was an issue.

The minute he’d logged in however, the consciousness behind his eye entered the computer and began digging through the network’s files.

While this was going on, Kyrion slowly typed in the program he was supposed to be in and spent the remainder of the class self learning.

“Kilo, your cousin isn’t too good with computers he types like an old man.”

“He’s lived in the wild for a bit and before then his parents were the rural type.

“I haven’t seen one of these odd boxes before today.”

“He doesn’t seem suited to pursuits involving thought.”

“You didn’t see him in Professor Gover’s class. He solved that question that was put on the board while half asleep.”

“So he made a fool of himself?”

“No, he made a fool of the question.”

“Math is annoying.” Kyrion squinted as he followed Kilo to an English course. Which he struggled with due to not doing the homework he was assigned before arriving in the world. Nor was he a native speaker, worse of all he was starting to get hungry.

Midway through the class while discussing national hero Beowulf. Someone rescued him from the clutches of the boring class.

“Oh, Mosley... You have been called to vist the football coach immediately. I guess sports would be more your speed.”

“Not really. I don’t know what football is.” Kyrion shrugged and followed…His staker.

“So…Nira…”

“Mira.”

“Nicole.”

“It’s Mira.”

“Fine Myra.”

“What's your deal?”

“I think you’ve been tailing me all day.” Kyrion said, he had actually caught her following them three times and Kilo was too emotionally involved to notice.

“No I haven’t.”

“Sure… Anyhow, what do you need?”

This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

“I need nothing?”

“Then why am I following you.”

“To see the coach.”

“Ugh… I'm gonna have my face beaten in again, aren’t I?”

“N-no? Why would you think that?”

“It’s an important part in raising pain tolerance. You need that to survive when stranded on some island for years.” Kyrion lied through his teeth about the latter, with the confidence of truth telling from the first sentence.

“Too much information.”

“You wanted the details. So, why does Kilo have a weird nickname?”

“He has bluntly turned down anyone who’s attempted to ask him out.”

“Okay? What makes that so special?”

“You act like you’ve done that before.”

“I mean, at one point people were men and women themselves day and night. I had to turn down so many requests that it got tiring.” Kyrion was referring to the duels that Kyrion avoided at Drisil. He’d gotten plenty of fight requests at Drisil. He had also thrown in his experience acting as one of the schools main healers.

“I-I see. Is it common?” Mira was red faced.

“Things changed for me when I met that special person. Now I have a happy reason to avoid those idiots. Maybe there is someone he likes. The men in our family are extremely devoted.”

“It's possible.”

“Hey, why don’t you ask him out but tell him, it's to help his reputation with the person who leaves him flustered. Or something.” They arrived at the sports wing momentarily as Kyrion’s goal of planting that seed was complete.

The coach stood a solid and sturdy four foot three with a stocky and well built frame. With a beard that contained various decorations related to what may be a tribe.

“Ah cannae believe it, a brute is really de healer.”

“Huh?”

“I can’t believe someone like you is just a healer. What you needed all them muscles for anyway.”

“In a worse case scenario I may need to carry a few people to safety during a war. Although that isn’t quite true. My teacher taught me that a healer must be an example of peak mortal capabilities without magic being involved. My body was molded for mobility and adaptability with a well of strength. While not the strongest, I can perform some feats.”

“M-magic?” Mira stuttured.

“I just knew you were stalking me.” Kyrion sighed.

“She’s already been briefed on matters pertaining to the underworld. So you know, more than half the school has some connection to that side of our world, we just don’t advertise it. The point is to adapt and blend in, with a modern society. All of the staff here for example, are involved in on way or another. Either as retired field workers or people from other places.”

“I wasn’t told that.”

“We know, just wanted you to know that you shouldn’t expose anyone for being anything other than human. As technically you aren’t one anymore.”

“Huh? Not human?”

“Correct, your heart is magical which means all the blood in your body has gained magical properties. Which tends to spread to your other organs as well causing an evolution. The difference in your physical appearance for one, and you ability to sense that there is something familiar going on between you and the kid.”

“Huh.”

“Luckily for us you were already here. So no odd transfers. Now then, healer, how did you know Peter was about to tear his ACL? I was hoping he’d visit a doctor”

“I noticed his limp when he entered my vision, as I have had the same injury I knew the signs immediately and may have bumped into him by accident as a way to heal him without him noticing. Then I taunted him a bit to get him to lean on the limb. When I confirmed that he was healed I left.”

“You are too crafty for someone with your build and powers. Why don’t you add up?”

“I also wanted to see how strong someone with my build but no magic would be. Pushing my own body further could prove detrimental. Idiodtic even. Should my mana be sealed.”

“Mirabell…Do you really want to hear all this? Shouldn’t you be back in class?”

“Ah right sorry.” Mira in her hurry turned and headed back to her class. Not recalling that she was in her off period.

The dwarf looked back at Kyrion. “How do you feel about learning about sports medicine? And helping athletes perform at their best.”

“I already know how to do that?”

“You probably know the basics, from maximizing gains to preventing injuries and healing the damage.”

“A bit more, I would be getting experience but I have plenty of that.”

“A position where you help, but aren’t the one in the limelight. You show up once or twice a week during practice, then attend various games should you have sufficient free time. You won’t be participating in the playing as much as you will be monitoring the health of our players.”

“Hmmm…It would be a negative gain time wise. I need more advanced medical knowledge, not more of what I know. I want to know how brains work better.”

“Ah, you want more specialized knowledge in medicine. Do you know much of demihuman biology?”

“Demihuman?”

“The Felhern or Beast kin, they have diverse biology, a mix of animal and human, then there are dwarves, elves, orcs, and goblins, each use the generic human template with alterations done to make them obviously different. I can give you a book on dwarven biology and healing techniques.”

“That is something I don’t have, although I haven’t met a dwarf, aside from you.”

“We build our homes underground and in the mountains.”

“Interesting, but I must warn you, if I am called to participate in combat or for a mission, I may not be able to provide any healing aside from limited regeneration.”

“Why would you be fighting?”

“Listen, I don’t know what you know about me, but I am a powerful entity in my own right.”

“So are most of the staff.”

“I can also—” Kyrion’s presence disappeared for five seconds causing the dwarf a bit of confusion.”

“Were you a tailor?”

“No, but I did learn that they get irritated when you can beat them in hide and seek.”

“Honorary assassin?”

“Meh, I’d be closer to a master thief that rarely steals. Get in and out undetected leaving no trace behind. I abhor killing if I can help it.”

“It's a rare day when someone with the aptitude to heal, prefers ending life to preserving.” The dwarf sighed. “Looks like your lunch period will begin soon. Come by when you get the chance.”

\Kiro slapped Kyrion on the arm to get his attention. “What did you do? I sensed something odd.”

“Fixed something that was about to break.”

The coach stood a solid and sturdy four feet three inches tall, with a stocky and well-built frame and a beard that contained various decorations related to what may be a tribe.

I was hoping he’d visit a doctor.”

“Ah, right. I'm sorry.” Mira, in her hurry, turned and headed back to her class, not recalling that she was in her off period.

“I can also—” Kyrion’s presence disappeared for five seconds, causing the dwarf a bit of confusion.”

“It’s a rare day when someone with the aptitude to heal prefers ending life to preserving.” The dwarf sighed. “It looks like your lunch period will begin soon. Come by when you get the chance.”
