《The Dragon Realms Saga》Chapter 41 (1st draft)

Koda dove forward, using a single hand to spring away from a brilliant, fiery explosion, and back to his feet. Taking in a deep breath, he slung his own fire spell back at Arrelion who sidestepped to the right to avoid the oncoming fireballs.
Koda slid his feet to a rough stop and drove his hands to the ground. He grinned viscously as a trail of roots blasted from the earth. Each racing toward Arrelion, twisting and reaching for the silver mage. Koda smirked. He had gotten better with vernal magic over the course of his journey. It being his base color, he fancied himself quite adept at it. However, his expression turned sour as a measly swing of Arrelion’s blade blasted a chilling gust that froze Koda’s roots in place.
Koda scowled with frustration. For every attack that he made, Arrelion had a counter. It was like the silver made was mocking him. Not once, since the battle began, had Arrelion made an advance on Koda. No, all Koda has done was attack. Vernal spells, water spells, fire spells, even lightning spells broke across Arrelion’s feet. Not a single tactic had worked.
“You’ve made your point, Master Arrelion!” Koda cried across the field.
Arrelion chuckled. “Have I, Koda?”
Koda balled his fists charging them with electricity. With a heaving motion, he blasted a stream of Lightning at Arrelion. With any luck, he caught the swordsman off-guard.
Arrelion smiled as he caught the lighting in his blade with a well-timed swing. In collective motion, Arrelion spun his torso and swung the lightning back at Koda.
Koda gasped and leaped backwards, just as the crackling lightning crashed at where he once stood.
“I think it is time that I’ve really made my point, wouldn’t you say Koda?” Arrelion called out.

Koda wasn’t exactly sure what level of defensive spell he would need against any onslaught Arrelion had planned for him. However, just to be safe, Koda raised a stone tree around him. Both green and brown proved to have quite the bunker magic that had been needed in the past. Combining them felt like overkill, but with Arrelion, one could never be too sure.

Koda placed his hand against the trunk of the tree to look out onto the battlefield. Arrelion stood at least fifty yards away. Perhaps Koda was being too hasty with putting up such a defense before Arrelion get close to—
Koda’s mouth fell open. Arrelion leaped into the air! Koda looked up past the tree’s branches. I’m being paranoid, no man could leap fifty yards!
Yet Arrelion dropped himself onto Koda’s tree like a falcon diving for its prey. Arrelion’s blade sliced cleanly through the stone. Its point grazed down the bridge of Koda’s nose. His face was in complete terror. Koda phased himself through the back of the tree, scrambling hand and feet, desperately trying to put as much distance between himself and Arrelion.
With a flick of the silver mage’s wrist both halves of the stone tree shattered into pieces and in seconds exploded across the walls of the arena.
Arrelion drove his claymore into the dirt. “Now I have made my point.”
Koda stumbled to his knees. He lowered his head and wavered his hands over the ground. Maybe I can…
Arrelion snatched the hilt of his sword and Koda flinched.
“Wait!” Koda clasped his eyes shut. He reeled his hands over his head in a surrender.
Arrelion released the grip on his sword and walked over to Koda.

“This was only a fraction of what I plan to teach you Koda.” He waited for Koda to look up. “Had I wanted to, I would have decimated you with the skill in my swordsmanship alone, but I found it necessary to display my magic as well.”
“None of my spells could touch you. How?”
Arrelion offered his hand. “Get up, Koda.”
Koda took Arrelion’s hand and was pulled to his feet. Koda avoided eye contact, instead only focusing on the sword behind Arrelion. Could his ilrune contain the same power? The power to enhance his speed and strength. To cut stone like butter? To counter any attack thrown at him? Whining and complaining didn’t hold these answers, that was for sure.
Koda finally met with Arrelion’s eyes. “I want to continue my training—if you would have me.”
Arrelion placed a reassuring hand on Koda’s shoulder. “You have seen what I offer you, now you must take it!”

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
