《Poison City》Book 2 Chapter 137. Palace (Part 2)

With Marcus getting into a meditative state, Gloria took a deep breath before stretching her arms and legs. She felt much less lousy with most of the poisons from those shadows’ weapons out of her body. And should anything happen, she would not need to rely solely on Marcus - this would not be ideal. Even if she could, she should not.
She stretched one more round, this time with her Qi running faster through her meridians. The soreness and numbness lingering in her muscles, joints and tendons lessened even more. She jumped up, and was able to touch the top of the wall to the side.
She was ready. Even without the other things in her backpack, she was in a good state to fight. The wounds on her legs stopped bleeding, with the help of her Qi, they would not be a source of concern soon.
She turned to look at Marcus. He endured less injuries from the fight, but seemed to have expended more Qi than her, so there was no telling how long he would need.
But he was not there. There was no one in the corner where he was. Not even a shadow, or a mark indicating a grown man was sitting there.
Qi accelerated in her meridians, and a lot of which concentrated on her eyes and her ears. Her senses were tuned, and her visions changed.
Creeping cold came from behind her, she swung her right arm behind her as she turned and backed off, with her hand completing a horizontal chopping slash. Her chop released an energy lade, but did not hit anything. Yet there it was, she saw a person hiding in the shadows, a man.
“Gloria, you need to listen to me.” The man walked out of the shadows, wearing a full suit of white robe.

It was none other than Gyuu Park.
Gloria paused for a moment, before suppressing the roaring sorrow from the memories and narrowing her eyes: “How dare you!? Who are you!?”
“You need to listen to me.” “Gyuu Park” raised both his hands: “I don’t have long…” Before he could continue, Gloria’s claw attack already went through his body. There was no blood, no spilled energy, as if his presence here was only a projection or a hologram.
Gloria’s body went through the man taking the appearance of Gyuu Park and landed on the ground. Only the feeling of cold air remained on her fingertips.
“Okay, say what you want to say. Or I’m gonna leave.” Gloria took a moment to collect herself.
“You need to move forward. This place - ” This man had the same tone and mannerisms as Gyuu Park: “This place is - it’s not the same as last time I was here. Everything’s fading, including the power that’s been keeping this place the way it was. You need to move forward, or else danger would be coming for you.”
“Why? What do you mean?” Gloria looked around, frowning: “What danger? What kind of danger? And - how are you here?”
“Corruption, shadows, and foul energy that we’ve been looking into.” “Gyuu Park” shook his head and answered in a stern tone: “And when you are here, there’s no way you can easily leave. You’ve already paid the price. And this is why I’m here. ”
“... alright go on. What else do you have for me?” Gloria sighed after thinking for a moment.
“The only thing I can tell you right now, is I’ve been here.” Gyuu Park groaned as his shadow blurred and flashed, seemingly enduring some pressure from an invisible force: “I came here not on my own accord, but by accident. I did not appreciate my time and opportunity here. Don’t make that mistake.”

Gloria’s eyes opened wide: “Wait - you’ve been here? Are you really - ”
“That’s all I can tell you. Good to see you, Gloria - ” Gyuu Park smiled, before his shadow completely disappeared in front of her. “And take care.”
Everything flashed in front of her eyes. Just after a few seconds, she heard the coughs of Marcus, who was standing by the wall with one hand supporting himself.
“Oh - you’re here.” Marcus turned around, with his eyes slightly red: “Sorry - did you - did you see it as well?”
“Well, yeah, I saw it.” Gloria took a deep breath: “I saw a - a friend of mine. Who’d you see?”
“My mother.” Marcus also took a deep breath: “She told me to move forward. But - ”
“My friend said the same. But I’m not sure where we should - ” Gloria shook her head and was just about to blame herself for not letting Gyuu Park speak, when the shadow of a woman with long black hair and in a glowing silky white dress appeared at the end of the passageway.
Marcus turned his head at the shadow following Gloria’s gaze. He saw it as well.
The woman turned right and started walking away. Gloria and Marcus exchanged looks, before following her.
Just when they turned, a couple of clay pots at the feet of the walls cracked and burst open. Black tar flowed outside. Puffs of black smoke arose, gradually taking the shapes of humans with weapons.
Gloria lunged forward with her Qi concentrated on her hands and released a flurry of finger strikes at the smoke figures on her side in rapid succession. High speed streams of Qi shot from the tips of her fingers and tore the figures up like rags caught in strong wind.
Marcus launched two claw attacks at the smoke figures on his side, shredding them and burning them up.
The woman in white stood on the end of this passageway, and when they got past the smoke figures, she turned again and walked away again.

I promise terrifying mushrooms, angry snakes, confused gods, even more confused cultivators and much, much more! Update schedule: (02/6/2022) As chapters are done, sorry. Progress: Currently up to old chapter 13-15. Chapter 24(or 25)/13, Parts 1 & 2 will be the end of the rework. Part 2 has been temporarily delayed due to me getting a frozen shoulder in the middle of June, which has been very slow to properly clear up. It is getting better, though, but Shoulder/neck is the worst set of muscles to have issues with ;( You can currently pick up most story threads after the rewritten chapters, starting from chapter 13-14 (old) Genre-wise, this is a bit hard to pin down. It's technically a Xianxia (because cultivators!), but it also veers towards Xuanhuan and has more traditional High Fantasy elements and a bit of Gods and Monsters and All Myths Are (on some levels) Valid. It also has a fairly large, ensemble cast, so if multiple point's of view are not your thing I am sorry. It won't ever really be considered 'grimdark' by any real measure of that definition but it does go to some complicated and fairly places dark occasionally, which I will note in author pre-chapter notes when expedient!. About the Author I mainly write fiction for my own hobby, it makes a nice change from academic scribbling! I started writing this quite a number of years ago. It has grown somewhat organically out of a bunch of different interests in all kinds of Mythology, World Building, Drawing Maps, Archaeology, Anthropology, History and Epic Fantasy fiction into what it is today. So I hope you enjoy the story and thanks for reading! Other stuff The cover is made by the author, using photos taken by the author. There is a Discord Server- Please come and chat, but beware of spoilers.

Vampire Life: Sara
This is a short story based on the character from my main book that is still in progress. The question that caused me to write this and other one to come was simple.... if you can't die, live forever, and interact with the human world, what do you do when something happens that you can't anticipate. In this book, Charles gets hit by a car.

The Cyclical Nature of Time
A girl’s life ends unexpectedly early, or so it would seem. Instead of eternal nothingness, she wakes up in an empty valley with no clue how she got there. Taking her predicament in stride, she sets out to do something about it. Unfortunately for her, the first couple of people she meets aren’t much help. They claim they haven’t heard of electricity and dress as if they were on a break from their job at a Viking-themed amusement park. MC is a somewhat normal girl. She's pragmatic and not very angsty. The story is tagged with anti-hero, but to be clear, she is not a villain. She does good if she can, she just isn't morally motivated to do so. The story starts out smelling of fantasy but will eventually shift towards sci-fi. It contains some supernatural elements and has a strong lead, but it is not your usual power trip. Expect a story that takes its time, but not to the point where entire chapters are spent on mindless chit-chat. I’m not into that. This is my first serious attempt at writing and I've learnt a lot writing this. Unfortunately, that shows. Chapter 1-10 is slow and rather pointless. Things get better, but it is not until chapter 25 or so that I began understanding how to structure chapters and to make them support the larger story. I publish about 3000 words a week (every sunday) but I write about 10000 words a week. Sticking to that pace, which is easy, the last chapter will be out by July.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
