《Through the Stars, Darkly》130 (2x55) When all you thought you knew is a lie

He found his quarry in a rundown bar, drinking zestri and playing cards.
Nahl Bergdahn was a stocky man with brown curly hair and a beard. He wore civilian clothes that looked worn and stained, with a few tears in the back. He frequently wiped his nose with the back of his hand, sniffing before taking a swig from his mug.
It would make everything so much easier if the man was drunk, but Halden knew he had better not count on it.
He glanced at the pouch on his belt and hoped he hadn’t forgotten anything. His eyes went back to the door as he settled comfortably in the back of his glider. It was just a waiting game now.
After an hour, he saw the bulky man throw his arms in the air as he jumped out of his chair, gesturing angrily at the three who sat with him.
He walked up to the counter to pay the woman who worked there, then stormed out of the bar.
Bergdahn looked around, spotted the hovercab, and waved.
Halden smiled as he leaned to set the glider in motion. It moved up to the man and stopped so he could hop in.
As soon as he was inside, the questor froze and blinked.
“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my cab!”
“No, Nahl. It’s not.”
Before the other could react, he stabbed him in the neck with a syringe.
The man fell like a rock as the glider rose into the night sky.
A few minutes later, he woke in a chair, hands tied to his back.
“What the—”
“Now, now, watch your language. We’re between civilized people here.”
“Do you have any idea who I am?”
Halden laughed. “Do I? Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I do. Your name is Nahl Bergdahn, and you have been a questor for three decades—the last five years as a prime. And, of course, you do all the dirty work the Emperor asks you to do. In a way, I suppose one could say you are his lapdog.”

The man squinted at him.
“Watch what you say, little man.”
“Are you telling me it’s not true? Which part did I get wrong?”
“I’ll have your skin for this, whoever you are.”
Halden tsked. “How low has the once mighty questor fallen.”
“What are you talking about?” spat the tied man.
“Look at you. You’re a wreck. Wearing rags and smelling like you haven’t showered in a week. It’s disgusting.”
“Watch your tongue! I’m still a prime,” he growled.
“Sure. But for how much longer if you keep this up? I’m recording this, by the way. What do you think your superiors will say when they see you like this?”
The man fell quiet, his jaw tight.
“Right. That’s what I thought.”
“I remember you,” said Bergdahn. “You’re that scientist.” The word sounded like a sour taste in his mouth. “The father.”
Halden’s voice went cold. “I was wondering when you’d connect the dots.”
“What do you want?”
“Can’t you guess?”
The man remained quiet for a long time, his eyes locked with Halden’s unflinching ones.
“How did you find out?” he hissed.
“Rees told me everything.”
“That little shit. Couldn’t leave well enough alone. Now you’ll both have to die.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. You know that won’t happen. We both are too valuable—”
“You’re nothing.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, buddy. I’m now working for his Imperial Majesty himself.”
The questor squinted at him. Snorted.
“You’re lying.”
Halden shrugged. “Doesn’t matter either way. Point is, I’m safe. Rees is safe. You? Ah, now, that’s a very different matter, isn’t it? Unlike us, I’d argue you are quite disposable. Especially once those above you see how low you’ve fallen.”

The man snarled. “What. Do. You. Want?”
“Answers, that’s what I want! Who put you up to it? Who ordered you to kill my daughter?”
Bergdahn laughed. “You think I did it? Come now, you can’t be so naive.”
“You made others do it, it’s the same thing.”
“You’re wrong, Prof. Roche. I was only a messenger. I was not involved in... in what happened to your daughter.”
Halden crossed his arms, frowning. Was the man lying? He had no way to check for that. But he couldn’t be. It had to be him! Otherwise...
He shook his head, knowing he couldn’t drag this on for too long if he didn’t want to get caught.
“Then who was?” he asked.
A sneer formed on the man’s lips.
“Who indeed,” he muttered. “Haven’t you figured it out yet?”
Halden went cold inside.
He didn’t want to believe it.
It couldn’t be true.
He had hoped beyond reason that this despicable man was the one responsible. That he had orchestrated everything. It had to be him.
“Oh, I don’t mind telling you, since you’re so out of your mind you kidnapped a questor. You have to know this won’t end well for you. But are you sure you want me to tell you?”
He knew the name the man would give him, but he had to hear it.
He needed to hear it, to have it confirmed.
So he nodded.
“It was your good friend, Marthus Wirdej. He’s the one who gave the order.”

The Forbidden Class
Hatred. Lust. Power. There are many reasons why the Forbidden Classes are chosen. For Katai, a young village Guard, the reason was simple. Vengeance. Schedule I’ve not been able to write for quite some time now, so while I’m getting back into things the schedule will be nonexistent. Story details LitRPG - expect classes and skills and magic. Not a lot of stats/number-crunching though. There is slavery featured in this story, which a lot of people have been upset about. So here’s your fair warning. Skill levels and progression inspired by Azarinth Healer. Let me know what you think, and feel free to give me some constructive criticism. Please be nice about it though!

The Foretold: Sun Child (Complete)
As a sixteen year old commoner, your future is bleak. Worse, your appearance sets you apart from others. Your only achievement so far, is befriending the second son of the Lord of the Keep. He has been your only friend for eleven years, initially partner in mischief and later your hunting companion and confidant. Now your friendship is being torn asunder, he has turned eighteen and is being sent away to become a Judge Knight Aspirant. What is to become of you? Before your friend leaves, there is murder and conspiracy! Magic left the land hundreds of years ago, all you have is your bow and hunting skills, nevertheless you must fight to survive and save another to have any hope of a future! Note: The graphic isn't mine; it is a re-imagining of a few separate images, any objections by original artists let me know. N.B. If you are looking for Sexual Content every chapter, or every second, third or fourth chapter this isn't the story for you - the Sexual Content is required for a plot device, not a way of life and the later chapters reflect that - please stop dropping Low Ratings when you feel I haven't met your idea of "fan service". This is finished as much as a multi book vision can be finished. At 750,000 words give or take and very little readership I can only blame myself. I have learnt a lot, possibly forgotten a lot as well! I will probably return to the Chapters at some point - a touch up here and a touch up there. The second book though will probably remain in my head for a very long time, so yes "cliffs" although I hope the characters and their motivations are developed enough that you can have a good guess at the content of Book Two and tell me so I can confirm or deny! This isn't a LITRPG where classes are developed, great foes are defeated by a hero of immense power. This is a story based within (I hope) a very real and consistent culture, that leaves breadcrumbs for the reader to work out what the heck is happening and why. This is a slow burn story as the MC is stumbling around discovering her new place and role. Author's Note (Apr 2021): I dropped the Fantasy Genre for the Mystery Genre, because while the setting mentions magic, is it about past glories and trying to return to them. Whereas the MC from Chapter One doesn't understand her predicament and the range of mysteries she must solve to survive. If I have this wrong PM me and I will change this back.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
