《Blue Road》Episode 26 (Part 1)

Reginald brushed himself off as he walked across the floors, being careful to not step on any rubble or broken glass along the way. He looked off in the distance as the ripped pieces of the robot lay next to the fountain, now deteriorated and colored black.
He walked around the desolate area, having survived, but barely winning the fight. She disappeared from his sight, but successfully got rid of some of her resources. Reginald had a hunch that wasn’t her only source of supply, and another one was around here somewhere. Emily wouldn’t throw all her cards on the table at once. That battle almost seemed…
A light flickered from the corner of his eyes, prompting him to turn to the source. Another broadcast lit up as a smug Emily descended from the ceiling, stopping midway in front of Reginald’s view. He took a step back and made a fighting stance, in case a surprise attack would be in store for him.
“Well, well, well, look where you ended up now.” Emily taunted him. “Thought you saw the last of me? You haven’t even seen all of my creations yet.”
What? When’d she have time to create-?
“While you were distracted and focused on other things, I escaped from the smoke and fire of that prior explosion. I’ve also been working on the next step towards my plan for my super experiment, along with my trustworthy assistant. But, since he’s now dead, I got to deal with this myself. Look outside if you don’t believe me. Try to find me if you can!”
Reginald peeked outside. The skies turn dark as red lightning struck down, setting locations and buildings into flames. Smoke rose from the ashes with dozens of continued screams muffled out in the distance.
I’ll have a hard time finding you, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to stop you! Reginald took out his spear and headed out toward the city.

Once Reginald got to the ground level, he hid behind a wall of a quiet building to prepare himself. He peeked from the corner, only to find other robotic drones roaming around, destroying everything in sight. These creatures looked familiar, almost like they were Usukui Puru, but they had red eyes, no mouths, and a lighter shade of blue.
He gasped, but also covered his mouth and went back into hiding. Reginald wanted to lower their numbers to decrease the collateral damage, but the numbers were too great. He compelled himself to find the source of this travesty, thinking that he could stop everything at once. But how long would that take? He planned out a course for where to go and made sure to take a breather before leaving his hiding spot.
Reginald made a break for it toward the designated path he set out in his head beforehand. From the corner of his eyes, some of the creatures appeared from his side. He did his best to power-dash and avoid their capture. Each of the blobs extended their arms to try and grab him, but He dodged each of the arms and sliced them off with the spear. The limbs fell to the ground, but slowly, would soon materialize and grow back on their bodies.
Reginald looked behind him as the creatures chased after him. He had to outrun them and fast or else fall into their hands. In front of him, a bigger Usukui Puru blocked his way, impeding his progress. He took the risk and pole-vaulted over the monster, letting the ones behind him crash into one another. He ran toward the alleyway and jumped across from wall to wall until he made it to the top of the roof. Reginald stopped for a moment to catch his breath and wipe the sweat off his face. But there wasn’t time to rest for long, as he felt he had a job to do and a city to save.

The Way Ahead
What do you do when you don't fit in? Edwin never really felt many connections to other people, but as a physics student, that was fine. He didn't really need it, anyway. He was content to peel back the mysteries of the universe... not that there were many left to find. Modern-day research was just too well-established, too well-trodden for any single enthusiast to make any significant headway. But that doesn't apply to other worlds. Not ones where magic and Skills run rampant, where well-defined roles and Classes dominate much of society with little room for novel experimentation from its residents. That kind of world would be perfect for an overeager, newly-minted Alchemist to make his mark. Things are never that easy, though. The Way Ahead is a very slice-of-life story following the story of someone trying to find his place in a world that doesn't know what to do with him. Expect lots of science, lots of alchemy, a few sarcastic quips by the System, and lots of exploration involving the world, self-discovery, and above all, science. After all, further research is always required. Updates every other day at 9 AM PST. Congratulations! For writing a story during the month of November, you have unlocked the Royal Road Writathon Participant path!
