《From the Ashes》37 back to running away

Kadin’s eyes snapped open and he looked around in a panic, he had slumped onto his side and the rock he was using as a pillow had a small amount of drool on it. He didn’t know how long he was out but it was very dark now and looking around him he could see a glow on the horizon behind him, with little clusters of torch light dotting the land as far as he could see. It was here that he found what had woken him, his senses now slightly recovered screaming at him to wake up. A few fire lit torches a few dozen paces away. The dark and his cloak had likely kept him concealed but starting awake and looking around in a panic was noticed. He heard a dry guttural voice sounding like crumbling leather barking something in a language he didn’t understand, and the scout party he assumed spread out and started to close in around him. Another barked command he didn’t understand and then he was blinded by a bright flash of light right in front of him, he heard the clatter of boot steps charging him as he was still trying to blink away the light in his eyes, in a panic Kadin reached into his cloak and grabbed some of his small bombs and threw them in different directions. Kadin heard them shatter but didn’t know if he had hit anyone when he felt the cold flash from his left a heat flash from in front of him, and the whiff of acid from his right. Along with a squeal of pain from somewhere around him.
As his vision started to clear, he could see that his bombs had brought him a few second but there was still a bright glow coming from the sky above, a signal to the others. But that was little more than a passing thought as he felt something impact him hard on the shoulder, as he went with the force of the impact and turned to get a look around him, there was already someone behind him closing in and in front of him at least five others. Kadin drew a sword with one hand and his last throwing dagger with the other (he still had a few smaller throwing knifes – but nothing that would punch through demon armour). He spun and ducked throwing the dagger at the demon who was closing in behind him. This demon looked almost human in terms of shape and size, but still had the red skin and odd muscle structure of the demons. This one had on arm guards and gauntlets up to his shoulders but his chest was bare, with nothing more than a dark leather band crossing in an X over his chest, another odd shaped helmet that left only his mouth visible and a pair of dark boots that came up to his knees. The demons reaction was just a little too slow to catch the dagger out of the air and it hit him in the chest right where a human heart would be. With his now free hand Kadin drew the last three little bombs from his cloak and threw them behind him as he charged forwards. However the demon with now in front of him was reaching to the dagger in his chest where he pulled it free, dark black blood coated the dagger and was flowing from the stab wound but that didn’t even seem to slow him down. Kadin heard the little glass ball shatter behind him and felt the light blast wave as he drew his other sword.

The demon in front of him didn’t seem to have any weapon (Other than Kadin’s throwing dagger) , but his gauntleted hands had a pair of long blades sticking out from just behind the knuckles, to well past where his fingers would have been if he had been holding his hand straight. The demon threw Kadin’s own dagger back at him, to which Kadin twisted to the side and brought his sword up to bat it out of the way. However the action caused Kadin to move slightly out of his stance and his opponent took advantage with a heave punch forwards. This punch caught him on the left of his chest, it just missed the protections of his cloak and instead hit his chest armour – there was a strange hissing noise as Kadin was pushed back, the punch didn’t penetrate the armour but looking at it there was a deep and heavy gash along the leather and he knew another attack like that and it would get through. As this was happening Kadin thrust forwards with the sword in his right hand aiming for the neck of his opponent. His thrust however was punched away and the demon followed with a low jab towards Kadin’s stomach, he was able to swing down with his off hand and he knocked the fist away from him and he was able to follow up with a swift knee right at the demons expose chin, its head snapped back as it was lifted off its feet and crashed to the ground. Kadin wasn’t able to do any more as the charging demons from behind him were almost upon him so he bravely kept running away.

The Dawnfire Archives
It begins in the endless wastes, with an unknown man arriving at the bottom of the tallest mountain in existence. A mysterious voice provides few directions, bringing more questions than answers. Regardless, after choosing a name and weapon... the man begins to climb. He will not be alone on this journey. A young individual from a different reality has also made his way to The Climb. But what does their arrival bode for the people of this world? And where does climbing the mountain truly lead? This is my second novel on Royal Road, the first being "Beyond the Horizon's Eye", and the third being "The Card Thief of Culnivar". This story is much more GameLIT than Xianxia, and takes place in a different setting with an entirely new cast of characters. It does, however, contain several ties between the stories. Average post between 1000 - 3000 words.
