《Renegade's Redemption: Dust》1st Anniversary Q&A (Cadeucus IV)

Q: I want to know how Elian got so strong.
A: Lots and lots of practice! When I was really little I didn't want to play, or do women's work inside. I wanted to go out into the fields and help there. Sparring with someone like Tal, who fights like he wants to kill you, helps a lot too.
Author's Addition, because I need more words and want to talk about worldbuilding: I don't think Elian would use the word 'transgender' for himself while living in Gresha, and as a god his perception of his own gender may have shifted somewhat over centuries. But yeah, 'trans' would be the best word for what Elian is, I think. Gresha is fairly accepting of trans-gendered individuals, so long as they properly transition. Gresha would, unfortunately, be much less accepting of non-binary and a-spec individuals.
Likewise I think they don't necessarily mind same-sex relationships kept within certain organizations (such as gay relationships in the army, lesbian relationships in the temple, gay lovers of the king), but it's generally understood that relationships that can't produce a blood child don't 'count'. So you can have these relationships, but the priority is to conform and produce a lot of kids. The 'ideals' of both men and women in Gresha probably both involve being very fertile.

Q: I actually just came up with another question for Elian: I want to know from their perspective what ripping a leg off a giant bug was like.
A: I... don't really remember. I wanna say it felt good? But I was just really really angry, and scared for Nia, back then, and it's kinda hazy... I know I was really sore and tired afterwards.

Q: It's not fully clear to me yet, so I want to know if people in his village don't like Talon because he's a jerk, or if he's a jerk because people in his village don't like him. Put another way, do people really only dislike him because of the Flame arts?

A: They don't dislike me because of the Flame Arts. They dislike me because I won't be their dog.
Author's Addition: To clarify, because Talon gives a fairly biased answer here: Talon has his reasons to dislike them, but he's also certainly gone out of his way to provoke them.
Ultimately, I'd say it's because he perceives his village, and perhaps even his village's culture, as having wronged him. Something which I have hinted at happened when he was younger, and he's never been given the proper resources or support to deal with those emotions, so he just lashes out at all those around him, with certain innocents, such as Kite, getting caught up in the crossfire. Elian and Nania not being from his village, but also capable of proving themselves to be 'strong', is probably a big reason he was able to form healthy relationships with them at all. They've probably also given him much better ways of venting and slowly coming to terms with those relationships... but unfortunately in the case of Kite, as we've now seen, it seems to be too little, too late.

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’

Duck and Wolf
Atticus (Adi) Wulfert comes from a long line of hunters, and now it's time for him to find his calling. Only... He's sort of a failure at it. His girlfriend thinks he should get a real job, his first teacher was slain by werewolves, and his target has decided to become his not so warm and caring mentor. Quite the opposite of warm, really. Dead cold is more like it. Adi isn't sure if he's being kept around as an emergency foodsource or if this vampire really wants to help him, but whatever the case may be, he doesn't have much choice in the matter. --- Cover photo by Cristian Newman on Unsplash - https://unsplash.com/@cristian_newman --- I do updates on my twitter and blog on what I'm up to every now and again when it comes to my writing. Moonshot
Gregarious businessman Evin Tumble is fascinated by the sudden and inexplicable appearance of a low-orbiting moon. Specifically, he's interested in shooting it down with a giant cannon. The moon is only about eight miles overhead, but it's high enough and quick enough that nobody can reach it by balloon or airship. He hires our protagonists: taciturn Iseult Morrin, cheerful Sean Whelan, and nervous Íde Ceallaigh, to help him with his obsession. As our heroes are dispersed across the continent to perform tasks for Tumble, and the moon-hunt draws closer, they become increasingly suspicious of their benefactor's motives and true nature. Moonshot is a story centred around struggling with confidence, the difficulty of being an immigrant, and the duality of truth, all clad in the trappings of an urban fantasy. It is character-driven, from the heart, and based on tropes and ideas that are missing from a lot of contemporary fantasy (a push beyond the flawless-yet-somehow-still-needs-rescuing-by-an-oafish-man heroine trope, a touch of cosmic magic based on the shared geometries of Celtic and Arab art).

MARKIS
It’s the year 2034, in almost two decades there was a scientific breakthrough enough to shake the world, it was to simulate a world so real, you could mistake it for real life. The first ever application of this proprietary technology, known as NR, was for the first ever, NR-RPG game, MARKIS. After almost 25,000 people had logged on, it was then known that they wouldn’t be able to exit out of the game. Essentially trapping them inside. Removing the headset will mean death. It was then that Miyamoto Takezo, the creator of MARKIS and the NR technology showed himself in front of them. He said “If you want to get back to your once happy and loved life, then you will need to finish this game. You who surpass all will be the ones to free the rest. For that is the mission that I have given you. Survive, survive and reach newer heights, reached by no one else.” This is the story of a boy and his friend, as they struggle through this world all to get back to their real lives.
