“I’ve earned a new Title just by locating this place?” The System could be unpredictable and weird at times but there was nothing I could do to change that. I closed the window and focused on what I was there to do.

On my way to enter the clinic, I discovered a stained overall on the ground. “This must belong to one of the garbage collectors. Was he torn out of his clothing?” It sure looked that way.

As I continued to inspect the object, a cop car suddenly pulled over in the driveway. A woman came outside that looked rather gorgeous for her profession.

“Hey, you there.” She noticed me right away because there weren’t many people present. She was still at a safe distance where I could activate my camouflage skill to hide my identity.

With this ability, the System changed my facial features into another appearance. The cop started coming my way. Her approach was very brisk and determined. I almost felt intimidated by her if I wasn’t so manly.

“Sir, what are you doing here? Hmm?” She noticed the overall in my hand and asked, “Do you work for the waste disposal company?”

“I do.” I played along to avoid seeming suspicious. “I was just about to leave after I collect the rest of the garage in the dumpster. What is a pretty cop like you doing all the way out here? Have you come to arrest someone in the neighbourhood?”

“I’m here on an official investigation. Hurry and do your job then move it along.” She had such a bossy attitude.

“Alright, I’ll get going.” I pretended to heed her command by going into the garbage truck. I backed it up closer to the dumpster where it would be easier to collect.

While doing this, I secretly observe the cop’s behaviour. She checked something on the ground before she stood up and withdrew her gun and flashlight. I watched her cautiously making her way into the abandoned clinic.

“Why is she going inside there? Is she tracking the same thing I am?” That lady had no idea what she was getting herself into.

Author’s POV:

The female cop who came and interrupted Smoke Pac’s investigation was none other than Denise Morgan Sleuth. Prior to showing up at the clinic, she was investigating a double homicide a few miles away downhill with a handful of members from her department. They separated to pursue individual leads.

What brought her to her current location was the faint trail of blood left behind on the road. She figured that whoever was responsible for killing her victims was very sloppy to leave such an obvious trail behind.

Applying a little bit of pressure to the clinic’s front door, Denise pushed it open. As soon as she entered, a wave of abysmal scent crashed into her nostrils.

“Oh, gosh.” She quickly covered her nose while grimacing slightly. “This place reeks. Do old clinics normally smell like this?” Wondering if what she was experiencing was a regular thing, she turned up the brightness on her flashlight to get a better view of where she was going.

Denise cautiously ventured down a dusty corridor where she came across various old appliances coupled with broken wooden chairs. She accidentally got her face caught up in a bundle of spider webs which threw her off her game a tad, but this wasn’t a big deal, so she quickly recovered her composure and continued to investigate the eerie clinic.

Upon further investigation, Denise discovered an obtrusive splash of blood littering the floor. She shined her light on the bloody mess. The glare which was produced temporarily scared away the flies that were gathered.

“Oh, that’s nasty. Looks like I might have discovered the hideout of the murderer. It’s still too early to judge though. I need to gather more evidence.”

Denise took a mental record of the mess then continued down the path. Her steps were carried with careful weights which would allow her to take swift action if the need arises. Unaware that she was being watched, she followed where her nose led her.

Aside from the stinking smell, the annoying sounds being generated by the flies in the vicinity also acted as a locator. She followed them to a certain room that was bolted shut and had smoke bleeding through the visible crevices.

“Dammit, it’s locked.” The chains were too thick for her to get through, however, there was a viewing window upstairs where she would be able to look inside. Her senses were telling her that there was something behind that door that she needed to see, thus she directed her legs to the upper floor to find out what had her body tingling.

It didn’t take her too long to arrive at her next location. Once there, she peered through the viewing window into a room replete with grotesque qualities.

“Huh? What in God’s name am I looking at?” Denise wasn’t someone who was easily flabbergasted, but right now she was extremely surprised by the scenery before her.

The room she was staring into had many corpses hanging from the ceiling in some sort of gestation cocoon that was siphoning blood from an intricate chamber made of coagulated flesh. Below them was a horde of Smokepires in deep slumber, some of them were very young. This was strange considering that Smoke Pac had only ever killed adults since his resurrection at Sunflower Cemetery. The Smokepires were giving off subtle steam which permeated to keep each other warm.

“What are those creatures? Am I hallucinating right now?” Detective Sleuth found it difficult to believe that what she was currently looking at was true. For a moment there, she thought she had slipped out of reality into a nightmare. She pinched herself very hard as a bonus to clarify if she was indeed in the real world.

“Ouch!” The pain she felt assured her that she wasn’t dreaming. “But how can this be? Where did all these monsters come from in Clown City? I better report this matter back to headquarters and have them send the military here ASAP.”

Thinking rather logically about the precarious situation she was in, Denise, decided to call for reinforcement. She feared that she would awake the Smokepire horde if she radioed dispatch in such close proximity. Hence she took a few silent steps backwards then started off to the stairway.

While rushing down the stairs, she ran into a man dressed in a tattered garment. Parts of his flesh were rotting from the inside out, especially around his chest area where a deep cavity was present. It wasn’t quite right to say that he was just a man. This thing blocking Denise’s path of escape was actually a weakened breed of Smokepire that just emerged from his cocoon. Albeit in replacement of vapours, it had rancid flies permeating his body.

“Huh?” Denise seemed startled by the man’s appearance. “Aren’t you that homeless man from the other day who came to the station to file a missing person report?” Her question fell on deaf ears. Instead of a typical verbal answer, she received one comprised of sheer physical ferocity.

Whoosh!

The bum extended his arms all of a sudden and tried to grab onto Denise.

“Get away from me!” She skilfully retreated upstairs with her gun aimed at the man. Seeing him rushing toward her, she openly threatened, “Stay back or I swear I will shoot you!”

“GRAH!” The man ignored her warning, moreover, launched himself at her like a rocket.

In response to this sudden assault on her mien, Denise no longer delayed; she opened fire at her target.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

The resonating sound of the gunshots reverberated throughout the clinic; waking a diabolical force of darkness that was recently in slumber.

“Dammit! Look what you made me do.” Denise cursed the man for forcing her to fire her gun. Seconds after doing this, her ears were already picking up on the horrible sounds of the many Smokepires residing in the clinic.

“I better get the hell out of here.” Giving her attention back to the stairway, she noticed that the man was still standing bold before her. “Why won’t you go down?” She shot him again a couple of times but he kept on coming.

“Fuck!” To avoid getting hit, Denise rolled on the ground to the other side of the corridor.

“GRAH!” The man seemed angrier that he missed his target. He spun around and started running towards Denise like a wild animal. His fangs and bleeding eyes were exposed to their limit of terror.

“Stay the fuck away from me!”

Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!

At the pump of the adrenaline coursing through her veins, Denise randomly unloaded all of her magazines into the wild man. By a stroke of fortune, one of her bullets wound up penetrating the man’s chest directly into the immature Resurrection Rubik’s Cube. Upon its destruction, the man collapsed inches away from Denise’s feet.
