《A Hero Among Us》Chapter 195 "For A Friend"

Zach, Jace, and Angel all look frightened.
Zach: He’s using that move?
Jace: Yeah, and I’ve got a feeling this isn’t a bluff!
Angel: Then we need to back up!
Angel glances at Khaos.
Angel: *yells* Khaos! You need to get away from Gus right now!
Zach, Jace, and Angel (with the help of Zach) start running.
Khaos: *nasal grunt* (I’ve never seen this before, not even through Hayze’s eyes. Whatever this is, it’ll be big.)
Khaos turns to start running away but stops and looks at Karma’s body.
Khaos: *frustrated grunt* (It’s just a sack of meat! Dammit!)
Khaos uses Shadow Sneak to sink into the ground.
Vanguard: (What is this? I never saw anything on Gus’ file that mentioned an attack like this!)
Gus: You aren’t going to hurt anyone ever again!
Vanguard: Ha! Do you think a little brat like you can bring down a god like me? You’re a fool!
Gus: I’m not little!
Vanguard: I can see that, you tub of lard!
Gus: Ha! Do you think I expanded because of fat?
Vanguard: Yes!
Gus smiles.
Gus: Well, you’re wrong! Building up in my body is a deadly gas that will eradicate every cell in your body! You can’t regenerate if there’s nothing left of you!
Vanguard: If you had an ability like that, I would have heard about it! Remember, I joined this school as a Quirk Advisor. So I know your power in and out!
Gus: Then I guess it’s a good thing I’ve never used this attack before!
Vanguard: What?!
Zach, Jace, and Angel take cover behind the bleachers.
Jace: I can’t believe Gus is doing something this reckless.
Zach: Didn’t he say he’d never use this attack?
Angel: Yeah… because he’ll exhale every bit of air in his body. The chances he’ll die after using it are astronomical.
Zach: Gus…
Khaos appears in Angel’s shadow with Karma’s body.
Zach: Huh? Khaos?
Jace: You got Karma’s body?
Angel: Thank you for doing that. There’s a chance Gus’ attack would have destroyed it.
Khaos: Shut up.
Khaos coughs up some blood.
Zach: Woah, dude! Are you alright?
Khaos: I’m fine! Don’t ask again! Now… What the hell is going on with fatso?
Jace: Gus’ is about to unleash his ultimate attack.
Angel: More than just ultimate…
Vanguard scoffs.
Vanguard: (Why am I getting all worked up? I’ve already shown that I can transform his gas into air. It doesn’t matter what he does. I’ve got complete control of this situation.)
Gus starts rolling at Vanguard.
Vanguard: Huh? What the hell!
Gus: Take this, you asshole!
Vanguard: (All of that just to become a human bowling ball? No wonder I haven’t heard of this move! It’s a joke!)
Vanguard uses The Sun to take flight and avoid Gus.
Vanguard: You really are pathetic!
Gus: Haha! Tricked you!
Vanguard: Huh?!
Gus rolls over and points his mouth at Vanguard.
Gus: THIS IS FOR KARMA! G0: VILE VENOM VANISHMENT!
Gus exhales a Fuschia cloud of smoke at Vanguard.
Vanguard: (What the hell?! How did he realize my-)
The cloud engulfs Vanguard, and his skin starts to melt.
Vanguard: AHHHHHH! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!
Khaos, Zach, Angel, and Jace watch in shock.
Zach: Holy shit!
Angel: Look at Vanguard!
Jace: He’s terrified!
Khaos: (What?! Why didn’t Vanguard do what he did last time Lardex attacked?)
Khaos’ eyes widen.
Khaos: (Wait a second… Vanguard might actually have a weakness. Fatty couldn’t have figured that out, so he must have just gotten lucky. That rolling attack was probably just an attempt to get Vanguard to be vulnerable in the air. Nice move, Gus.)

Vanguard continues screaming in agonizing pain.
Vanguard: WHAT- WHY- WHAT THE FUCK?!
Vanguard attempts to fly out of the cloud, but his eyes melt.
Vanguard: AHHHHH!
Vanguard crashes into the ground, a melted and disgusting mess.
Vanguard: AHH! AHH! AHHHH!
Gus deflates down to standard size as his attack fades.
Khaos: Come on, he’s weak! We have to finish him now!
Zach: Right!
Jace: Let’s go!
Khaos, Jace, and Zach charge at Vanguard, and Angel limps behind. Khaos switches his sword for a shadow crossbow.
Khaos: You’re going down, bastard!
Khaos fires a bolt into Vanguard’s wrist, severing his hand with the rings.
Khaos: That should slow down his healing! Get him now!
Jace and Zach: On it!
Jace springs into the air while Zach extends his bone claws.
Zach: It’s over, Vanguard!
Jace: Yeah! We’re about to-
Suddenly, Vanguard’s body begins regenerating rapidly.
Vanguard: Die?
Vanguard finishes healing and promptly gets to his feet. With his fist, he bashes Zach in the face and catches and throws Jace across the field.
Khaos: What the hell?!
Vanguard laughs.
Vanguard: You really thought it would be that easy?
Gus: Damn…
Gus starts choking.
Khaos: How did you do that?!
Vanguard: I used the power of The High Priestess: Infinite Repair.
Khaos, Jace, and Zach: Infinite Repair?
Vanguard: Yes, the Gamma Ring makes it rather useless, but in a situation where I need to heal extreme injuries instantly, it’s pretty handy. You see, I’m able to repair anything to its original state. So say you were to break a stick or pop a tire, I could instantly fix those objects.
Khaos: *frustrated grunt*
Vanguard: Oh, don’t get so upset; I’ve never used this ability before, so you couldn’t have prepared for it.
Jace and Zach get to their feet.
Zach: How do we beat a guy with over 20 quirks… it feels impossible!
Vanguard: That’s because it is, Zach.
Jace: Oh, shut up!
Vanguard turns his attention to Jace.
Vanguard: Do we have a volunteer for my next kill?
Jace trembles.
Vanguard: Gus seems to be down for the count, and I’m not a fan of mercy killings. So, I only have four options. Hm…
Jace: I’m not afraid of you!
Vanguard: Jace, I defeated you long ago. Even before I obtained the Gamma and Delta rings. I could destroy you.
Jace grinds his teeth.
Vanguard: Although… I guess I should reward you for helping me kickstart my Vanguard. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today without you. Hm… you know what, yeah, I guess I’ll kill Zach instead.
Jace: SHUT UP!
Vanguard: Hm?
Zach: Jace?
Jace clenches his fists.
Jace: You preyed upon my insecurities; you tricked me into betraying my closest friends! You’re a monster!
Vanguard: Jace, I didn’t make you do anything. Remember, you were leaving U.A. for good. I just gave you an alternative option, and you took it.
Jace: No! You manipulated me! You twisted the truth to serve your purpose and used me! I may have been leaving this school, but I wasn’t trying to hurt my friends the way YOU made me do! You act like you’re a god, but that’s only because you’re afraid of the real thing! Because you know that when he gets his hands on you… he’s going to make you wish you never existed!
Vanguard stares at Jace.
Khaos: (This kid has a death wish.)
Zach: (Jace…)
Vanguard: Are you finished?
Jace: No!
Jace springs towards Vanguard with his fist cocked back.
Jace: Jace in the Box Atta-
Vanguard catches Jace by the neck and begins choking him.

Jace: *choking*
Zach: Jace!
Khaos: There goes another one…
Jace’s face starts to turn purple.
Vanguard: I’m not killing you because of what you said. I’m killing you because I don’t like ungrateful brats. I gave you the chance to live, but you spat in my face.
Jace: *choking*
Vanguard: You see, Jace, I’m not afraid to see God… in fact, soon, I will meet him, and when I do…
Vanguard squeezes tighter, popping a blood vessel in Jace’s eye.
Jace: *choking scream*
Vanguard: He’ll be the one that’s afraid.
Zach: Jace!
Zach starts charging, but Vanguard suddenly gets hit upside the head by a group of feathers, causing him to release Jace.
Jace: *deep inhale*
Vanguard: *frustrated grunt*
Zach and Khaos look over their shoulders and see that Angel has limped over.
Zach: Angel?
Khaos: (Dumbass…)
Angel: Leave my friend alone, you piece of shit!
Vanguard begins ripping the feathers from his face and slowly glances at Angel.
Vanguard: One moment, Jace.
Vanguard kicks Jace in the stomach, knocking him out cold.
Jace: AHHHHH!
Vanguard: Someone else has moved up in the queue.
Angel is breathing heavily; he falls to his knees in pain.
Angel: (Even a simple attack like that was straining… I’m at my limit.)
Vanguard begins walking towards Angel.
Vanguard: Ready to die?
Angel: No… but I don’t think I have a choice now.
Vanguard takes the final feather from his face and uses the Emperor to transform it into a Model 1887 shotgun.
Vanguard: Good answer.
Vanguard passes by Zach.
Zach: (I can’t let this happen! I have to save Angel!)
Zach turns to Vanguard and readies his bone claws.
Angel: Zach! Don’t!
Zach: Huh?
Angel: Zach… if you strike him… he’ll kill you… and I don’t want you to die.
Zach: B- but I don’t want YOU to die!
Angel: I know, but you’ve got more of a future than I ever did… and that was before I lost my wing.
Zach: Angel, I…
Angel: I’ve just been some guy… everyone forgets about me… I don’t have any special traits or interesting parts of my personality. I probably would have just ended up being a C-Rank hero with a fine career, but you… I heard about your fight during the Vampire Queen attack… you have what it takes to be an incredible hero, and you’re also an awesome guy. You’ve been a great friend to me, so… I’m willing to take a bullet for you… literally.
Zach: A- Angel… I- I-
Vanguard reaches Angel and takes aim with his shotgun.
Vanguard: I guess it’s time for me to send this Angel flying to the heavens!
Angel: No… my last flight will be on my terms!
Angel charges and wraps his arms around Vanguard.
Vanguard: Huh? What are you-
Angel starts flying into the air with Vanguard.
Khaos: He can still fly?
Zach: Yeah, his wings are for speed. They aren’t the thing that grants him the power of flight.
Angel takes Vanguard higher and higher into the air as Vanguard struggles to break free.
Vanguard: *frustrated grunt* How am I not overpowering you?!
Angel: *grunts* Because this is my dying act, and I won’t let you stop me!
Angel reaches the clouds.
Vanguard: You know this will never work, right? I won’t be killed by a simple fall!
Angel: Oh, I’m aware. I just want to go down with one last attack! It may be pointless, but I’d rather die trying to defeat you than give up!
Angel begins zooming toward the ground with Vanguard. Khaos and Zach watch from the ground.
Zach: Angel!
Khaos: *nasal grunt* (He could have lived, but he sacrificed himself to keep the others alive just a little longer.)
Khaos glances at Karma’s body.
Khaos: (I guess they really are heroes.)
Angel and Vanguard start spinning.
Angel: Take this, Vanguard! My dying act! Supersonic Strike!
Angel and Vanguard crash into the ground together, creating a massive impact that kicks up a ton of dust.
Zach: ANGEL!
Khaos: I don’t know what he was trying to accomplish, but there’s no way that worked!
The dust settles, and Vanguard is breathing heavily on his knees beside Angel’s lifeless corpse.
Zach: No… not Angel too…
Zach falls to his knees in anguish.
Vanguard: *frustrated grunt* Annoying pest.
Vanguard kicks Angel’s body away.
Zach: HEY! Don’t do that!
Vanguard: I’ll do what I like with him.
Zach gets to his feet, visibly angry.
Zach: I’LL KILL YOU FOR THAT!
Khaos: Zach, calm down.
Zach: Huh?
Khaos is looking at Vanguard with a stern expression.
Khaos: You and I are the only ones left; we have to devise a plan.
Vanguard: I agree, but every plan you could make is pointless. It’s okay, though. I’ll let you two “strategize,” it’ll be adorable.
Khaos: Zach, come here.
Zach: *grunts* Alright…
Zach approaches Khaos.
Zach: Okay, what’s the-
Khaos bashes Zach in the head with his shadow crossbow, knocking him out.
Khaos: There we go.
Vanguard raises an eyebrow.
Vanguard: Hm?
Khaos: You don’t seem like the type who likes to kill unconscious people.
Vanguard: No, I do not.
Khaos approaches Gus. He’s choking to death, barely alive.
Khaos: (I see, his lungs were emptied, and the excessive use of his quirk caused his throat to close.)
Khaos creates a shadow pen and uses it to give Gus a tracheotomy.
Khaos: Now that these five are out of the way, the real fight can begin.
Khaos cracks his knuckles and neck and begins approaching Vanguard.
Vanguard: *scoffs* Real fight? What do you think you can do against me?
Khaos smiles.
Khaos: Someone doesn’t know the rules of Khaos.
Khaos transforms his shadow crossbow into his executioner’s blade.
Khaos: Allow me to acquaint you with them.
Justus picks up a massive piece of debris.
Hayze: What are you going to throw that at me?
Justus: Something like that.
Hayze: Huh?
Suddenly, the debris falls on top of Hayze, pinning him and his motorcycle beneath it.
Hayze: *pained grunt* Oh… I get it…
Justus chuckles and begins limping toward Hayze.
Justus: I bet you think you’re all that, Hayze. You won the Licensing Exam tournament, took Iota’s hands, and led this fool-hearty mission to destroy my master! I don’t know where you forgot your place along the way, but you’re inferior to me!
Hayze struggles to break free, but the debris is too heavy.
Hayze: *grunts* (Dammit! I can’t move! I need to-)
Hayze notices his motorcycle’s console and reaches for one of the buttons.
Hayze: (Come on… come on…)
Justus kneels down beside Hayze.
Justus: It’s my destiny to be number one, Hayze. It was foolish for you to ever believe you could surpass Colossus's son for that title!
Hayze: *grunts* Remember when you hated being Colossus’ son? Good times…
Justus stands up and steps on Hayze’s head.
Hayze: *pained grunt*
Justus: I was an immature child. My father was the greatest hero this world had ever seen, and I took him for granted! But now, I have the chance to continue his legacy!
Hayze gets a look of realization.
Hayze: (Wait a second… that’s it! Justus always wished he could be this open about admiring his father. That’s how I can get through to him.) Oh, yeah? Well, do you think Colossus would be happy seeing you like this?
Justus: *frustrated grunt*
Justus applies more pressure to Hayze’s head.
Hayze: AHHHHHH!
Justus: Of course! I am the strongest there is, and I’m proving it!
Hayze: Colossus didn’t care about being the strongest… he cared about representing righteousness, and that’s the last thing you’re doing!
Justus: I am righteous! What do you think the Vanguard is?
Hayze pushes the button on his motorcycle, activating the spring system and launching the debris off him.
Justus: Huh?
Hayze: A cult!
Hayze grabs a bolt from his quiver and stabs it through Justus’ ankle.
Justus: AHHHHHH!
Justus falls over and writhes in pain on the ground; Hayze gets on his motorcycle and drives off.
Justus: WHERE THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING!?
As Hayze drives through the streets, he coughs up some blood.
Hayze: (Great, that collision gave me internal bleeding.)
Hayze winces in pain.
Hayze: (And cracked ribs… I need to stall and give these injuries time to heal.)
Hayze turns down an alleyway.
Hayze: (Vanguard’s made Justus lose sight of his father’s wishes, and I must remind him what Colossus stood for… but how?)
Hayze returns to the spot where he initially encountered Justus.
Hayze: (Where is he?)
Hayze spots Silver, hops off his motorcycle, and runs to him.
Hayze: Silver, buddy, wake up, man!
Silver: *groans* Hayze? D- did you win?
Hayze: Not yet; I need your help.
Silver: Huh?
Hayze sits Silver against a wall.
Hayze: How are you feeling?
Silver: Not great, but I’ll live…
Hayze: That’s good.
Silver: So, what do you need…
Hayze: Justus is obsessed with continuing Colossus’ legacy. If I prove to him that he’s doing the opposite, I can potentially break him free of Vanguard’s control. Got any ideas?
Silver thinks for a moment.
Silver: Remember Colossus’ death?
Hayze: Yeah, not to be rude, but that was literally the first thing I thought of using.
Silver: Not his speech… what he did before it… he gave up his power to save the city and everyone in it. If you remind him of that… maybe Justus can break through.
Hayze: Maybe… it’s worth a shot.
Silver: Where is he now?
Hayze: He’s somewhere in the city; I dropped a building on his head and stabbed a bolt through his leg, so we have a little time.
Silver: Good, 'cause there are two things you need to know about from my fight with him.
Hayze: Hm?
Silver: His cooldown is 4 minutes. During that window, he can’t use The World.
Hayze: Gotcha.
Silver: And any object he makes contact with while The World is active resumes its flow of time. I covered him in water to figure that out.
Hayze: Hm… I see…
Silver: Also, here… take this.
Silver secretes liquid silver from his skin and forms it into a sword.
Hayze: I’m not trying to kill Justus, you know.
Silver: I know, but he’s trying to kill you.
Hayze: Hm… I think I understand.
Hayze takes the sword.
Hayze: Stay here. After I finish Justus, I’ll-
Suddenly, Hayze’s motorcycle crashes into his side, sending him flying.
Hayze: *groans* Ow…
Silver: Hayze!
Justus limps towards Hayze in a fit of rage.
Hayze: How did you- oh…
Justus: The World, you idiot!
Hayze: I know, I know! I’m like 90% sure I’m concussed; cut me a break.
Justus notices the silver sword.
Justus: Oh, the only one who will be getting cut is you.
Hayze: Not your best one-liner, man.
Justus: *frustrated grunt* Is this a joke to you?
Hayze slowly gets to his feet.
Hayze: No, but I think you’re a joke.
Justus: WHAT?!
Hayze: If you think Colossus would be happy seeing what you’ve become, then man, are you dumb.
Justus: My father was powerful and-
Hayze: Stop right there.
Justus: Huh?
Hayze: Your dad’s power came from the Omega Ring, sure he was strong on his own, but he never would have become the hero he was without it.
Justus: So?
Hayze: So, the idea that Colossus cared so much about power is just plain stupid.
Justus: You’re wrong! He used that ring to enhance his abilities to reach the next plateau of strength! The same way I have with The World!
Hayze: Then why did he give it up?
Justus: Huh?
Hayze: If Colossus was so obsessed with being number one, why did he hand Iota the Ring!
Justus: Because he- *frustrated yell* Shut up!
Justus charges at Hayze and attempts to punch him, but Hayze blocks with an exploding bolt, sending them both flying backward.
Justus and Hayze: *pained grunts*
Justus slams his fist into the ground in pure rage.
Justus: WHY IS IT TAKING ME SO LONG TO DEFEAT YOU TOO!
Hayze: Probably because you’re weaker than you were before…
Justus: HOW DARE YOU?!
Hayze: What made you so strong was your need to surpass your father, but now you think you’ve already reached that point. You lost your edge, Justus, and you’re paying for it.
Justus: I…
Hayze: Break free… and join the good guys again.
Justus is quiet for a moment.
Justus: (What if he’s right… I-) NO!
Justus stands up.
Justus: It’s time for you to die, Hayze!
Hayze reaches for his quiver.
Justus: THE WORLD!
Time stops, and Justus grabs the silver sword off the ground.
Justus: I am stronger than my father! I’m the strongest in the world!
Justus climbs the nearby building and looks down at Hayze.
Justus: You always have to lecture everyone else about their problems when you’re the guy with five alternate personalities crawling around in your mind. You’re a pest, and I can’t wait to be rid of you!
Justus tosses the sword so it’s positioned above Hayze.
Justus: Good riddance.
Time resumes.
Justus: I told you, Hayze, I am number one!
The blade stops midair.
Justus: What?!
The blade flips around and slices through Justus’ bicep.
Justus: AHHHHH!
Hayze: Oh no! Justus, look out!
Justus: Fuck you! How did you do that?!
Hayze: Take one look at that sword and see if you can figure it out.
Justus glances at the blade.
Justus: *under his breath* Silver…
Hayze: Ready to give up, Justus?
Justus: Give up? I’d never do that!
Hayze: Even after getting electrocuted?
Justus: What? You didn’t-
The bolt in Justus’ leg activates and shocks him.
Justus: AHHHHHHHH!
Justus falls off the building and crashes into the ground.
Justus: You… bastard!
Hayze: Ready to give up now?
Justus: Never!
Justus slowly gets to his feet, breathing heavily and exhausted.
Hayze: Funny.
Justus: What is?
Hayze: Our battle got cut short last time because my body gave out, and the opposite might happen this time.
Justus: That would never happen! My drive will never cease!
Hayze: What drive? You’re already number one, right? What else is there to prove?
Justus: Shut the hell up!
Hayze looks at Justus with a stern expression.
Hayze: Enough games. Give me back my friend.
Justus: No-
Hayze: Justus, this isn’t you. You’re acting like you did during the Sports Festival; we both know you’ve come too far to be that version of yourself again.
Justus flashes back to his encounter with Colossus after his match with Tobias.
Justus: *under his breath* Father… I…
Justus falls to his knees.
Justus: Hayze… finish it.
Hayze: Justus! You’re-
Justus: Gone!
Justus stands up and charges at Hayze.
Justus: You’ll never defeat me, Hayze!
Hayze: I already have.
Justus lunges at Hayze with his fist cocked back.
Justus: Lies!
Hayze blocks with the E.M.I.L.Y. Justus’ punch crushes it, and sends Hayze flying back.
Justus: What?!
Hayze tumbles against the ground but promptly gets to his feet.
Hayze: Blast from the past, eh?
Justus: Paralleling our previous fight will get you nowhere!
Hayze: You’re right. That’s why I’m going to end this the old-fashioned way!
Justus: You’re ending nothing!
Justus glances at the clock tower.
Justus: (It looks like you’re out of time, Hayze.) The World!
Time stops.
Justus: Let’s see… how shall I finish you…
Justus notices one of Hayze’s bolts lying on the ground near him.
Justus: Ah, perfect. I’ll defeat you using your own gadget.
Justus picks up the bolt and walks toward Hayze.
Justus: (All I have to do is throw this bolt at his heart… once time resumes… he’ll die.)
Justus laughs maniacally.
Justus: THIS IS THE END, HAYZE! YOU CAN’T STOP ME!
Suddenly, the bolt activates, and ice surrounds and traps Justus.
Justus: Wh- what?! How the hell?!
Justus attempts to power his way out of the ice but can’t.
Justus: (All my injuries have weakened me, I can’t break free!)
Time resumes.
Hayze: Well, well, well, look what we have here.
Justus: How?! Time was stopped!
Hayze smiles.
Hayze: Not for the bolt.
Justus: Huh?
Hayze: Before you used The World to stab me with Silver’s sword, I reached for my quiver. After time resumed, you got stabbed and distracted, so I grabbed that ice bolt and set a timer for 4 minutes and 15 seconds. I then dropped it on the ground next to me. After 4 minutes passed, I knew you’d use The World again and start looking for an item to kill me with. That’s where the bolt came into play.
Justus’ eyes widen.
Justus: The timer was frozen at 15 seconds… so when I picked it up…
Hayze: I just had to hope you’d hang on to it for that amount of time.
Justus: But if I hadn’t, you’d-
Hayze: You gloated about your victory, right?
Justus is silent.
Hayze: Safe bet.
Justus: You can’t defeat me! I’m the strongest fighter there is!
Hayze: That may be true, but if there’s one thing you should have learned about me by now.
Hayze charges at Justus.
Hayze: It’s that strength isn’t everything!
Hayze unleashes a barrage of punches on Justus’ head and upper body.
Justus: AHHHH! I CAN’T LOSE! I HAVE THE GREATEST QUIRKS OF ALL!
Hayze: It’s not about the quirk; it’s about the person who wields the quirk! You’ll never be as powerful as the real Justus, so it’s time for him to break free!
Hayze kicks Justus in the head, breaking him free of the ice and sending him tumbling against the ground, barely conscious.
Justus: *groans* Thank you… Hayze…
Justus passes out.
Hayze: Welcome back, Justus…
Khaos slashes at Vanguard, but the madman dodges every attack with ease.
Vanguard: What’s the point of this? You know I’ll heal any damage you inflict even if one of these slashes connects.
Khaos: I’m aware; I’m just having fun!
Khaos chops off Vanguard’s arm.
Khaos: There we go!
Vanguard’s arm regenerates.
Vanguard: *sighs* Are you done?
Khaos: Sure.
Khaos’ blade fades away.
Vanguard: I was hoping you’d present more of a challenge, but you seem to be reserved about the fact you’re going to die.
Khaos laughs.
Khaos: Oh, trust me, I have something in store for you that will make you regret those words.
Vanguard: *scoffs* I doubt that.
Khaos coughs up some blood.
Vanguard: I haven’t inflicted many injuries on you; that blood must be from something else.
Khaos: Heh, yeah… let’s just say that recent events have weakened me. I could have made this more interesting if I was at my full strength.
Vanguard: Well, isn’t that a shame, but I’d have to disagree. I’m the most tremendous force this world has ever seen. I’m invincible.
Khaos: Oh… trust me, there’s someone who will defeat you.
Vanguard: You mean Hayze’s fused form? He doesn’t scare me.
Khaos: Maybe right now… but he will.
Vanguard: A God fears nothing.
Khaos gets a sinister grin.
Khaos: Let’s test that theory.
Vanguard: Hm?
A circle of shadows appears around Khaos.
Khaos: You should never make fun of someone for being afraid of the dark. You never know what nightmares lurk in the shadows!
Vanguard looks unphased.
Khaos: You look tough now, but let’s see if this next attack changes your tune!
Khaos becomes engulfed in shadows.
Khaos: Everyone has nightmares. We just need to find yours!
The shadows begin jetting into the sky, slowly forming into a massive raven that lets out an enormous screech.
Vanguard: Is that supposed to scare me?
Khaos: Yes.
The heroes in the helicopter approach U.A. They see the Raven in the sky.
Lust: What is that?
Impact: It looks like an attack of some kind.
Exciton: Yeah, and I’ve got one guess who it’s aimed at. Pilot, skip the helipad! Head to that Raven!
Pilot: Yessir!
Wrath, Bruno, and Grace are walking through campus.
Grace: Hey! What’s that?
Bruno: It looks like a bird.
Wrath: What are you guys talking about-
Wrath looks at the bird, and his eyes widen.
Wrath: *under his breath* Holy shit…
Calm, Gale, and Impulse spot the bird from their respective locations.
Impulse: Khaos…
Gale: He’s using that move…
Calm: And there’s only one target I could think of…
Hayze sits Justus down next to Silver.
Hayze: I’m gonna see if I can get you guys some help.
Silver: Uh… Hayze… what’s that?
Hayze: Hm?
Hayze notices the Raven.
Hayze: Someone is fighting Vanguard…
Silver: Then you need to get over there.
Hayze: Huh? But what about you?
Silver: We’ll be fine, but I can’t say the same for whoever that Raven belongs to. You need to help them.
Hayze: I can’t just leave you two here with your injuries!
Justus: Hayze… go…
Hayze: Huh? Justus?
Justus: Save them… save whoever is fighting Vanguard…
Hayze stares at Justus.
Hayze: Right. Stay safe, guys.
Hayze hops on his motorcycle and drives off.
Justus: Silver… I’m sorry…
Silver: Don’t worry, Justus, you weren’t in your right mind. I’m just happy to have you back.
Justus: Thanks, Silver.
Khaos laughs maniacally.
Khaos: Are you ready to experience the greatest fear the world has ever seen?
Vanguard: I told you, a god fears nothing.
Khaos: You’re no god, and I’m about to prove that to you!
The Shadow Raven lets out an ear-piercing screech.
Khaos: It’s time to be afraid!
The Raven dives toward Vanguard.
Khaos: NIHILISTIC NEVERMORE!
Vanguard stares down the bird as it careens toward him.
Vanguard: *nasal grunt* It doesn’t matter; the Gamma Ring will heal any damage this attack inflicts.
Khaos: That may be true for physical damage, but this Nevermore isn’t aiming for your body.
Vanguard: Huh?
Khaos: It’s going for your mind!
The raven collides with Vanguard, enshrouding him in a fury of shadows.
Vanguard: AHHHHHH! WHAT IS THIS?!
Khaos: Feel as the shadows delve into the deepest and darkest recesses of your mind!
Vanguard: WHAT?!
Flashes of Vanguard’s life begin to appear in the shadows.
Vanguard: HUH?! HOW IS THIS HAPPENING?!
Vanguard sees the death of his mother, the beatings he suffered from his father, and the death of Father Musa.
Vanguard: AHHHH! NO! NO!
As more memories flash, Vanguard starts to tear up.
Vanguard: DON’T DO IT! DON’T SHOW ME THAT!
Khaos: Well, well, well, it looks like the “god” is afraid of something! So let’s see it!
Vanguard: NOOOOOO!
Flashes of the destruction of Vanguard’s village appear in the shadows.
Vanguard: AHHHHHH!
Khaos: Yes, Vanguard, feel the pain. Fear it because you can’t run from it. You can never escape the darkness inside you!
Vanguard: I’LL KILL YOU!
The shadows fade, and Vanguard falls to his knees in anguish.
Khaos: Go ahead. I’ve already destroyed you.
Vanguard wipes the tears from his face and gets to his feet.
Vanguard: I’m going to enjoy this.
Khaos: Me too, because I know every punch you throw will contain the pain I inflicted upon you.
Vanguard: *frustrated grunt* DIE!
Vanguard charges at Khaos and begins beating the absolute shit out of him.
Vanguard: HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME RELIVE THOSE MEMORIES!
Vanguard slugs Khaos in the chest, making him cough up a ton of blood.
Vanguard: I’VE DONE ALL OF THIS FOR THEM! TO MAKE UP FOR MY SINS!
Vanguard tosses Khaos aside; he’s a bloody mess.
Vanguard: I WILL MAKE THIS WORLD BETTER! I WILL MAKE IT A UTOPIA, YOU BASTARD!
Khaos: *groans* And this is only my second-worst defeat…
Vanguard aims his palm at Khaos.
Vanguard: Enjoy hell.
Suddenly, Hayze arrives on his motorcycle and slides to a halt.
Vanguard: Well, well, well… just who I was hoping to see.
Hayze takes off his helmet and looks around the battlefield with a look of horror on his face.
Hayze: Angel… Zach… Jace… Gus… Karma… Khaos!
Hayze hops off his motorcycle and runs to Khaos’ side. Vanguard lowers his arm.
Vanguard: I think I’ll let this play out.
Hayze’s eyes glow.
Hayze: Khaos! Are you alright?!
Khaos coughs up a shit ton of blood.
Khaos: No, numbnuts.
Hayze: Wh- what happened here? Why were you guys fighting Vanguard?
Khaos: This is where Gus landed… Vanguard wouldn’t let them leave, so they had to fight.
Hayze: Are they… dead?
Khaos: Only wing boy and tall girl, but the others aren’t in great shape.
Hayze: Wh- what?
Hayze begins to hyperventilate.
Khaos: Hayze, calm down… for just a moment.
Hayze: Huh?
Khaos: I’m going to die…
Hayze: You- you are? But how?
Khaos: I’ve left your body via the Sigma Ring’s power. I’m technically my own person right now. So, my soul will cease to exist when my heart stops beating.
Hayze: But… why? Why were you willing to die helping us fight Vanguard?! I never expected that from you!
Khaos: Because I wanted to die…
Hayze: What?
Khaos: Ever since the fight against the Vampire Queen… I’ve been weakening and changing.
Hayze: Do you mean like when you saved Aster and the heroes from the nerve gas?
Khaos: Yes… it seems you’ve rubbed off on me…
Hayze: But why?
Khaos: Because I was created from the immense hatred you built up since childhood. That’s what made me so powerful… more powerful than you because you hated yourself most of all. But… when you saved Ivy using my power… that changed. You finally began to appreciate yourself and your hatred, a.k.a. me. That’s what caused my personality to transform; I started to care about others and wanted to save them… just like you.
Hayze: But… Why do you want to die, then?
Khaos: Because I hate it.
Hayze: But… I don’t.
Khaos: No, but you hate the idea of having your personality changed against your will. How would you feel if you had to live the rest of your life as someone else?
Hayze: I’d… hate it.
Khaos: Exactly… I saw the writing on the wall. I’ll continue to change as you succeed further, and I don’t want that. So, I decided to help you… with the full intention of dying at Vanguard’s hand.
Hayze: Khaos… I…
Khaos: Shut up! Don’t give me some dumb speech… I wish I could have stuck around and accomplished my goal of taking control of your body, but you’ve won our war.
Khaos’ eyes start to flutter.
Khaos: Hayze… before I go… I have to tell you one thing.
Hayze: Huh?
Khaos: I was only as strong as I was because of your hatred; my power came from you. You always wanted a powerful quirk of your own. Dr. Moore allowed you to borrow ours, but none of these elements have ever been yours. With me gone… my darkness is now yours to command.
Hayze: Khaos…
Khaos: You’ve proven you never needed a strong quirk to become a hero, but from now on… you have one. Show the world… and Vanguard… that you’re not one to be trifled with.
A blue aura surrounds Khaos.
Khaos: Use my power… to save… everyone.
Khaos fades away. Hayze's left iris changes to white.
Hayze: Khaos!
Vanguard chuckles.
Vanguard: Good riddance to that fool. He should have never-
Hayze: Power…
Vanguard: Huh?
Hayze: I need more… POWER!
Hayze unleashes a potent aura that pushes Vanguard back.
Vanguard: What the hell?!
Hayze gets to his feet; his eyes are pure white and gray.
Hayze: Vanguard, you’re going to die by my hand.
Vanguard: Oh really?
Throughout the campus, Calm, Gale, Impulse, and Wrath’s eyes begin glowing their respective color. They fall to their knees, screaming.
Bruno: What’s going on?
Grace: I don’t know!
Blair: Impulse? What’s wrong?
Saige: Calm, are you alright?
Killian: What’s wrong with him?
Alec: I don’t know, maybe he’s bored?
The four personalities stop screaming and get to their feet.
Calm: It’s finally time…
Gale: For us…
Impulse: To unite…
Wrath: And become…
Hayze: One.

Four story anthology
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] [participant in #NaNoWriMo] Preface: This fiction will contain four different stories set up as a challenge for myself and to get better at writing. The challenge for royal road writathon is a 55.555 word goal while the nanowrimo challenge is 50.000 words. Reader suggestions is turned on, feel free to point out errors I missed and I'll fix them up! Chasing sun, napping softly: Cultivation/Xianxia genre. Some parts will poke at the ridiculousness of the Xianxia gerne. We follow the life of a magical fox monster, who doesn't like how the cultivation world works. Said beast seems to have more knowledge than is usual for normal magical beasts. In it's infinite wisdom it decided to search for the main character of the cultivation world to have a cozy and safe place beside him. Our fox will act as a "wise beast" to coast along on the main characters rise to greatness, all for peace, happiness and that amazing napping spot in the sun. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing in first person. Comedic effect between talking vaguely and sounding wise. The cost of heroism: A story more centered around fights and mental health of hired mercenaries/heroes. The world is infected with an eldritch corruption. Humans are trying their best to explore and clear out wilderness and the dungeons hiding in them to establish new cities. Lords seek for hired hands to do the professional work. Thanks to the setting, the story will show how awful pasts are the norm and how pragmatic people became thanks to that. People exchange their sanity for riches, fame and gods acceptance. Interpersonal relationships change drastically and quickly. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing grim scenes/imparting a feeling of how grim the world is. Writing fight scenes. Showing different mental states. Describing their influence on people during fights, walks or even after successful or failed campaigns. Who will be the next powerhouse? : A story about a gaming show, it's host Staan and the different participants. Stereotype characters, stereotype backstories, silly challenges and quizzes. The winner of those challenges gets powerups for their power system. Be it magic, ki, psychic power or anything else imaginable and unimaginable to reach the power of gods. The challenges for myself with this story: A softer tone for storytelling. Making the reader smile and enjoy themselves. A different try at slice of life story. I was left behind on earth as my family conquered another world and enjoys riches, but that's okey because I got a cheat too! : Stereotypical Isekai story parody twisted into an Urban Fantasy story. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing over the top and overdramatic scenarios/scenes Writing in first person. Walking into stereotypical scenarios and making them more dramatic/giving them a twist. Different type of humor.
