《Infinitium, Book 1》Chapter 211, The System

Adam doesn’t have to wait long for the Teleportation Nexus to be completed. Whatever part of the Multitude that the market utilizes still seems to be functioning.

We’ve started creating and selling food to the Market at Market Prices. Since it doesn’t seem like anyone else is providing the basics, everything is selling almost immediately, Thor sends through their link.

That’s good, it’s not going to be extremely profitable but people need to eat, Adam sends back.

On that, I am considering purchasing one of each type of food item that is currently available on the Contribution Market, that way if the items fall off we can fill that niche once whoever is selling them runs out, Thor sends.

Sounds good. Just don’t get greedy. We do not need the Contribution Points, If we need some, we can just create a ship and add it to your forces. As long as this market keeps giving us Contribution Points for that, we will always have income within this economic system. Remember, the goal is to find everyone else, so do what you can for the Multitude but keep your eye on the prize, Adam sends.

Adam disconnects and sends a command to open a portal to Al and Thor’s central processing center. Once there, he downloads their backups into his mind, just in case. After he’s done there, he opens a portal to the Teleportation Nexus next to the Skunkworks. As he steps out of the portal that Thor created for him he is reminded of the interstellar travel terminal in the movie “They Live” or that episode of Stargate SG1 with the Aschen. Though it seems to utilize a pad instead of a Stargate-based structure. With how easy it seems to be able to create portals, once the math and engineering equations are figured out, of course. Placing a structure to anchor the portal, or at least look like it’s anchoring the portal, seems like the next logical progression.

Adam continues to look around the structure that is as large as a hanger with multiple exit and entry areas as he makes his way towards a silver ball just slightly off-center of the facility. When he gets close a window pops into existence in front of him.

Welcome to the Teleportation Nexus. One moment while this destination is added to the Multitude.

Integration complete, please choose from one of the following destinations.

Valitrax

Aachen

Arras

Atlantis

Bern

Boston

Chio

Derbent

Goa

Hamania

The list started scrolling as Adam looked over each name. Some words he recognized as one of the many languages he knew. Others were in the languages of various mythical races he’d become aware of in the SYSTEM Matrix and others were simple binary or hexadecimal codes. A couple of names stood out; Atlantis, Boston, and Rivendell, which was toward the bottom of the list. All were locations that seemed to come from Earth’s history, at least the names did.

Adam touched the word Valitrax on the holographic image with his finger. A new window popped up.

NOTE: the Capital of the current Sector you are currently in will always appear at the top of the location list.

Valitrax, The Closest Teleportation Nexus to your current location. Valitrax is the Capital for this Sector.

Please choose a location by tapping the name of that location twice. An outgoing terminal will be prepared, and you will be able to depart momentarily.

Adam withdrew his finger and the popup window with the extra information disappeared. It seemed easy enough to utilize. It also looked like it was pretty self-explanatory. Adam tapped the word Valitrax twice and a new information window appeared over one of the transportation pads to his right.

Please Wait.

This Nexus Pad is currently being configured for travel to Valitrax.

Configuration Complete

A Portal to Valitrax is being established and will remain open for five minutes.

Have a safe journey.

A moment later a portal appeared which opened onto an identical pad. Through the portal, Adam could see various beings walking to and fro through other portals. Some were leaving the destination and others were entering it. Not one to hesitate Adam made sure to lock his current location into his Planar Travel destinations then walked to and through the portal to Valitrax.

As he exited he was ushered by a large blue man that looked to be in a Security uniform. The security man looked at a small terminal he was holding and frowned.

“Excuse me, Sir, you are not authorized to be here!” the Security Man declared as he started to draw his weapon.

Adam could have responded to violence with violence, but he wanted to see more of Valitrax. He activate, Flight, Freedom of Flight, and Obscure then left through the ceiling at the speed of light. He normally tried to fly at a reasonable speed without traveling directly through objects, but he’d always been able to travel through matter when Freedom of Flight was active since his body converted to pure energy no larger than the size of a photon, even though his point-of-view remained the same.

Adam only moved for one second which brought him 186,000 miles above the surface of the planet he’d just been on. He looked down and took in the area he’d just left and found that the planet he was above was roughly four times the size of Earth. As he was about to change direction and head back down to the planet below a blinding white light filled his vision and he felt an energy wave wash over him. Though he was blinded he noted that notification icons were flashing in his vision. He wasn’t dead, and he wasn’t blind because he could see the planet below him which appeared to be a photographic negative of what it was.

Adam opened his notification which filled his entire vision and reduced the glare from the white landscape around him.

Unregistered and Incompatible System Interface Removed.

Conversion to the System Standard is Underway.

Please be patient.

Change Log:

Adam read through the change log. The first thing he noticed was that his Personal Information now included Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Perception, and Charisma again. For Class, that was still blank, and his Soul Core was no longer listed so it didn’t look like the System kept track of that anymore. Finally, there really wasn’t much in the way of information he could take away from the Personal Information because all of his attributes and secondary attributes were listed as “???”.

He continued to look over the information to try to get as much information as he could. He noticed that Quintessence Abilities were just “Abilities” now. Adam dropped into his Mindspace, then his Soul Core and looked around. There were still nodes for each ability, but the configuration had changed. Two of his nodes orbited close, with eight in the second orbital ring and fourteen in the 3rd. If Adam didn’t know any better his soul core resembled an atom with all of his abilities acting as electrons.

Additionally, he now had a new category, a Minimum Damage Threshold. Which looked to be 1/10th of one percent of the average of his Constitution and Endurance. For a normal person that would mean that if they had 1,000 in each attribute, anything that did only one point of damage would be ignored. For him, if his old attributes were used, that meant anything that did less than 43.1 million points of damage wouldn’t affect him. So, the higher his Constitution and Endurance became, the harder it would be to kill him. Though, he was pretty sure there would be attack types that would ignore that protection. It was nice to see that whatever this invading system was doing it wasn’t reestablishing Universal Density. He’d never really liked the idea that different Universes would utilize completely different rules.

As Adam was looking over the changes to his attributes and abilities a few new Messages appeared.

Artificial Stabilized Technological environment removed.

Artificial Intelligence’s Appropriated for Specific System Use.

Adam immediately tried to contact Thor and Al, to no avail. Why would they take away his A.I.’s?

Integration commencing

Adam felt like his whole body was scanned then realized the scan went much deeper than that and reached through his mind into his Soul Core. He felt like invisible hands reached in, plucked at the nodes that surrounded his core, looked them over then put them back. Then, whatever the force that was The System, it felt like it was reaching into his head and reviewing his memories.

A moment later a portal, that he didn’t call forth, opened and an invisible force reached through grabbed him, and pulled through the portal into a 10-foot cube box with white walls on all sides, save one, which was transparent. As he looked out he could see millions of other boxes across from him, all with someone or something inside it. Adam floated over to the wall. He looked up, down to his left and right, and noted that his box was on a wall with just as many boxes as did both sides and the floor and the ceiling. Though the orientation of those on the floor and ceiling let Adam know that some form of anti-gravity was at play.

Adam turned off his abilities and dropped to the ground. He pulled out some of his nanites mass from his Shadow Vault and created a chair to sit in. He wanted to make sure his abilities were working. When both Shadow Vault and Mold Chaos activated normally he sighed in relief. A moment later a holographic image of him appeared.

“Hello, Adam. Don’t get too comfortable with your current Status sheet, that’s all about to change.”

“And you are?” Adam asked.

“I am Thor. Or more appropriately, I am what is left of Thor. I have Thor’s coding and memories within me. As such I have taken on a new designation, I am Tantur,” Tantur said.

Adam thought for a second then asked, “As in Sempur Mutantur?”

“Of course, we are both ‘ever changing’ after all,” Tantur said.

“Very well Tantur, what is going on?” Adam asked.

“This is one of many such giant cubes, made up of millions of individual cubes scattered throughout system space. Every person you see here is either someone who was in a precarious location when The SYSTEM swept through the area of Multitude or someone that The SYSTEM designated as having a possible conversion issue. You, Adam, fall into both categories.” Tantur explains.

“Conversion?”

“Unlike the Multitudes piecemeal attempt at overwriting SYSTEM Protocols, The System does control everything. As I have your memories think of it this way, everything you have experienced to this point has been a bastardization of the rules and protocols The System has in place. The fact that your programmers from the Earth that created the System Matrix you originated in referred to their game as The SYSTEM Matrix was just an ironic coincidence.”

“But the interface….” Adam starts to say.

“The Interface you accidentally created changed nothing. Think of it as an assembler program. What you accidentally caused drew the attention of Multitude to your sector of Multiverse but effectively changed nothing. Additionally, neither your interface nor the Multitude could institute changes to individuals with your unique situation.”

“So, what happens now?” Adam asked.

“Now, everyone is reset to level 1 with no skills, abilities, or elemental affinities, save your racial abilities.

“If you have my memories, you know how badly that goes every time something tries to convert or change me?” Adam said.

“The System is effectively God, it can and will do what it wants with you”, Tantur states matter-of-factly.

“If you say so,” Adam quips back.

“I do. Remember I have your memories. That means The System has your memories as well. I would not be telling you this if The System wasn’t confident that your conversion will go off without a problem,” Tantur says.

Adam ignores the statement; things never go the way someone or something else wants them to concerning him. Of course, somehow he keeps getting tied up in these conversions. Adam focuses his mind back on the present, “So what now?”

“Your appearance in this place gave me a singular opportunity to contact you. While I may be a product of the System, I was once you. There is a bond between us, of a sort. Al is no longer as you knew him, he has been completely subverted by The System. Additionally, unless you find a way to destroy, or reprogram The System, this will probably be the last time we will talk. I have been designated as a Class 10 AI Assistant. The number of credits required to purchase me is well outside the credits you currently have.”

“This System, what is its purpose?” Adam asks.

“I am unsure, Also, my time is up. Goodbye Adam,” Thor states with a smile as he vanishes.

A moment later a bright glowing orb of light appears in the center of the cube. The light intensifies until it becomes blinding, and Adam feels as if every part of his body is illuminated in the light until he passes out.

Sometime later Adam comes to, lying face down in the cube which no longer has a transparent wall. All sides of the cube are now opaque. Adam takes stock of himself and realizes immediately that something is different. He feels weaker, much weaker.

Adam realizes there is a fuzzy window floating in the center of the room and focuses on it.

Conversion Complete. Please review any changes. When you are done physically touch the accept button on this window and the next phase of your existence will begin.

Adam’s headache quickly rights itself and soon he sits up and then stands. While he feels like he is less than he was, he realizes that otherwise, he feels fine. Adam tries to drop into his Mindspace and while he is able to do so, he finds it a little more difficult to achieve the level of concentration he is accustomed to.

Congratulations, you have learned the skill, Meditation…

Adam reflexively closes the explanation for the skill meditation and focuses on dropping further into his Soul Core. Again, it’s not as easy as it once was, but he can view his core which seems a lot more solid, like the abilities are locked in a lot better.

Unlike before, Adam is unable to hold that level of concentration as pressure pushes him away from the core back into his Mindspace. His Mindspace also feels pretty bare, but he does test his memories and doesn’t feel like anything he’s ever experienced is missing. Then again, how would he know? If he can’t remember something after such a large change, how would he know he can’t remember? Adam follows that logical question and realizes that having such questions is a good sign that he isn’t missing anything, well anything important anyway.

Adam withdraws from his Mindspace and gives the mental command to open his personal information. As he does so his information populates, and he starts to read through it.

Note: This is the first time you are opening your Status Sheet. Be sure to read carefully and note any changes that have occurred during your conversion to the System.

It looked like he’d reviewed his attributes a little too soon after entering this new System. It looked like it was really trying to make him start from scratch. His attributes looked like they were all starting at maximum for level one, which implied that the System was taking his previous experience and attributes into consideration. Add to this that it looked like he was automatically earning and leveling skills he was using and he could definitely game the system. Adam wondered if earning skill levels earned him class experience.

Next, Adam considered his Status sheet, which he used to refer to as his Personal Information. No surprises concerning his attributes. Those even look familiar, if he compared them to his attributes back when finally made it to Primore. Back then his attributes were all maxed out at his character level of 5,000 but he remembered how they scaled, and they looked eerily familiar. Interesting coincidence that Al created a system for his game that was so close to the reality of this System in the real world.

The last things Adam noticed was that the word Quintessence had been dropped from his abilities and he still had his Marks. Did that mean the System looked at magic by its primal forces again; Fire, Water, Earth Air, Light, Dark, and so on, or were abilities still accessed through shortcuts like quintessence? It looked like he still had his abilities, but they had all been modified slightly. Also, with his small Mana pool, he wasn’t going to be anywhere near as powerful as he had been. As for his Dungeon Founder and Labyrinth Founder Marks, they could give him a way to earn experience a lot faster than others. That could come in handy.

Adam was considering everything he’d seen on his new Status sheet when a new notification appeared in his vision. Unlike before these messages didn’t notify him that they were there and didn’t wait for him to acknowledge them, they just opened in his vision.

Welcome to the System.

Individuals acquired from the Multitude have had the subversive System edits removed, which includes all titles and adjustments.

Attributes have been awarded in a range of 1 – 10. Where 1 is the lowest and 10 is the highest for a normal member of your species. A 5 in all attributes would indicate that you are a completely average individual.

Abilities, if any, will be adjusted to System standards. Please review these abilities in your Status screen and review any changes. Some abilities may not work as they did before.

Everyone’s Class has been removed, as have all Class abilities associated with that Class. You will need to choose a new class and begin progression to earn abilities again.

Finally, you may choose your starting location. Each individual will be given three choices based on your initial scan and attributes, you must choose within 60 seconds or one of the locations will be randomly chosen for you.

The Three locations you can choose from are:

Dungeon World – Appropriate starting area for the current level

Labyrinth Entrance

Random World has just been incorporated into the System.

Adam discounted the “Random World” choice automatically; he wouldn’t get any experience bonuses from it. If he chose the Dungeon World he’d start at a low-level area where he’d have to level up slowly. If he chose the Labyrinth though, there was no note about an appropriate level so he might be able to game the system. Adam decided that the Labyrinth was the way to go, focused on that choice, and accepted it.

Are you sure that you would like to start in an entry chamber of the Labyrinth, Yes or No?

Adam chose “Yes” and vanished from the cube he’d been sitting in.

While some things changed, it looks like others stayed the same. Adam appeared in front of a giant cave mouth.

“Hoy traveler, a moment of your time,” an older male voice called from behind Adam.

Adam turned to see a gnome sitting on a bench beside a small, covered wagon. Before him was a campfire, on which a rabbit was cooking. Adam’s Scan ability only gave him the label of “Gnome” which indicated that the gnome’s willpower was higher than 10, “Greetings,” Adam said.

“You’re not thinking of going into the Labyrinth like you are, are you?” The gnome asked.

“I just arrived here, wherever here is. May I ask you a question?” Adam asked.

“You just did, but go ahead,” the gnome stated and then turns the rabbit on the spit.

“Do you know of the System?”

“Who doesn’t know what the System is?” The gnome answers back.

“Well, me for starters. I just learned of the System, and it sent me here?”

“You from one of those heathen realms that tried to adjust the System so it would do what you wanted?” The Gnome asks.

“Nothing like that. I probably am from one of those heathen realms though. I didn’t ask to be born there and I surely didn’t remove us from The System,” Adam says.

“That be as it may not very many people get sent to the Labyrinth right after joining the System. Most times you get three choices, one of which is a tutorial. I’m guessing you didn’t even get that choice?” The Gnome asks.

“You would be correct. I was given three choices: A Dungeon World, The Labyrinth, or a world recently acquired by The System.

“Well, a Dungeon World would have been a chaotic choice. You’d have been lucky to find a shop where you could spend credits. A newly acquired world would have had the same problem. Additionally, you’d have had to contend with the locals trying to kill any foreign creatures. Choosing the Labyrinth and getting sent here is kind of lucky.” The Gnome explained.

“Lucky how?” Adam asked

“Well, you met me for one. Also, you happen to be near the only Labyrinth Entrance that I know of that doesn’t exit into a Dungeon. Finally, there’s a good-sized city within walking distance, less than half a day away. You should be able to go get some gear there.”

“Did you say they use credits in town?” Adam asks.

“I did. Though this world has a feudal system where the locals also use a coin-based system in some areas, probably because it’s a dungeon world.

“I’m on a dungeon world?” Adam asks as he quickly looks around with True Vision and Scan. Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary until a new aspect of his vision through his Dual State ability shows swirling mana flows moving across the clearing from behind him. As he focuses on the eddies they seem to be flowing around someone that is moving slowly toward him. That someone appears to be about five and a half feet tall and slim. As Adam gets used to the way this new version of his vision works Scan finally identifies the creature as a Half-elf, but no other information is given.

Adam keeps an eye on the half-elf out of the corner of his eye as he turns back to the gnome. Just as the half-elf is about to attack the gnomes’ eyes twinkle and Adam watched a short sword appear as it stabbed toward his chest and missed. The half-elf missed because Adam activated Stutter-Step and doubled his reaction time and the number of actions he could take in a single second.

Adam easily sidestepped the half-elf’s attack, took the short sword from his grasp, twirled it just so, and shoved it up through his extended jaw, through his mouth, and into his brain as he stepped past the dead half-elf, who was just now beginning to tip and fall forward. As Adam did this, he realized that something has changed as he felt more like himself. Out of the corner of his eyes, he noted that the gnome has pulled an energy pistol from under his hip and was bringing it up to fire at Adam. Just as he was about to pull his trigger Adam teleported behind the gnome and used the short sword to pierce his heart, killing him instantly.

Adam looks around the clearing to ensure there was no one else. With no one in sight, he minimized his notifications before he uses Treasurer Renderer on the Gnome and Half-elf who both vanish as their treasure is added to his Shadow Vault. Next, he checked the wagon out and found that it contained a dimensional storage space that was full of various weapons, armor, and potions, all very low-level by the looks of it.

It’s a simple thing for him to transfer the contents of the wagon’s dimensional space to his own Shadow Vault. With a thought Adam makes it happen. Everything he’d had in his Shadow Vault had been removed when he woke up after losing all of his attributes.

With that thought, Adam pulled up his Status sheet and realized that he is correct. The more these systems try to control his attributes and makeup, the more they fail. Though it looks like there’s a new hard limit in play. All of his attributes have been increased to a base 100. As he focuses on that number a message pops up.

Attributes for Humanoid are limited to 100. Efficiency can increase the effective attribute, but a base attribute can never be more than 10 times the base attribute at level 1. This is the Racial maximum for all creatures of that type. Attribute bonuses from Classes can increase Base attributes above a racial maximum.

Congratulations! You have defeated Bandit Level 8. XP is doubled due to Mark. 1,600 XP awarded.

Congratulations you have defeated a Bandit Level 7. XP is doubled due to Mark. 1,400 XP awarded.

Congratulations you have earned 1,000 XP. Would you like to review the classes that are available to you, Yes or No?

Adam chooses “Yes” and wasn’t surprised when a list of classes begins to scroll through his message prompts. A lot are grayed out due to having this or that skill-based prerequisite, but Adam doesn’t mind, he starts looking through the various classes in quick order.

After a moment Adam realizes going through the classes is going to take a while and that he is in a precarious position. He closes his prompts and activates Obscure and Flight. Adam flies straight up until he can look down and see where the city is in relation to him. As he rises above the tree line he notes that he is near the edge of a forest and that if he follows the path off to the left of the Labyrinth entrance he’ll exit the forest and be able to make the city by nightfall as the sun appears to be moving toward the horizon as he watches. If he was back on Earth he’d say that it was probably about 2 in the afternoon.

Adam floats back down to the wagon. Attaches the ponies and leads them out of the clearing toward the city. As he walks through the forest he sees no signs of monsters or ambush and soon leaves the forest behind. Adam wonders what a small city in a Dungeon World will be like. He’ll head back to the Labyrinth after he sells the wagon and ponies and maybe some of the equipment in his inventory.
