《The Paths of Magick》Lore - Concrescence: Thaumic Weight and The Amassing of Spirit
Advertisement
To progress through the ranks of any given Path, a magician must amass matter immaterial; mana.
Each Path or even subspecific Way does so differently. But, in an effort to understand the underlying principles and mechanics of ascending the ladder of a magicking Path, in this tome, we shall use the examples of the Nine Major Telothic and Nine Major Elemental Paths.
Part I: Thaumic Weight
Thaumic weight or gravitas is the ability of masses of mana to distort spiritual fabric and thus bring surrounding ambient mana under its sway. The more mana is a present in a single locus, the more thaumic weight it possesses.
As everything in the Living Universe, there is an equal and opposite force to thaumic weight: planar polarity. The polarity of a given plane of reality naturally resonates with any bodies of mana therein, slowly but inexorably changing them to its own natural principles. Thus, when a mage of a given power greater than their surroundings does not practice concrescence, they lose the thaumic weight.
Planar polarity and thaumic weight are but two sides of the same coin. Both are expressions of thaumic weight itself, planar polarity is simply the thaumic weight of an entire system of metaphysical tissues.
Part II: Amassing of Spirit
How a mage amasses greater and greater mana within their beings is as varied as the magicking Paths themselves. Some do so by congregating substance insubstantial within the Centers of their spirits, building worlds within flesh-distilled. Others do so by gathering morsels of the metaknowledge—the strands that make up the structure and form of mana itself—to form indexes within their souls called arkanums.
Part III: Basal Thaumic Weight Ratio
Each stage of a magician’s Path is like a ladder’s rungs that grow in distance to each other exponentially; more and more energy is required to climb higher.

A mage’s Basal Thaumic Weight Ratio or simply concrescence factor (x) is the base logarithimic scalar to their acquirement of greater quantities of mana (n).
n in this case is plotted through a graph as a curve with a horizontal asymptote, increasing in the y-axis by n elevated to the x power.
Each tier of influence a mage crosses, their thaumic weight increases exponentially while their concrescence factor decreases in kind. Though, this is not a chance in Basal Thaumic Weight Ratio, but instead the introduction of a scalar of lower potency. Thus, the difficulty of climbing higher upon a given magicking Path increases explosively by the crossing of tier threshold.
Part IV: Endonetheric Resonance
The concrescence factor of any given mage is not an abragent nor diffuse agglomeration of all types of mana, but instead context dependent.
Through a person’s life, they will acquire threads of causal nature; each action reaping of an effect to one’s spirit. A totality of these sympathetic strands are called spirit-roots. These spirit-roots are mostly derived of endonetheric or enetheric mana; matter immaterial belonging to a slice of the Subtle Plane between the Physical and the Spiritual proper.
As a surface effect to the exposure of aspected and affined mana, a person’s aura so too changes, the spirit being malleable and plastique as it is. This is a consequence of planar polarity and, in general, thaumic weight. Like attracts like through the bending of universal fabric; the spheres fall to the lowest recess, following the Principle of Equilibrium.
The Living Universe, as any living, breathing being, tends towards a state of the least possible energy; equilibrium. The process of trascending to this state is called entropy.
Any given person’s affinity towards an aspect of magick or a singular element thereof is derived from their spirit-roots, and concrescence factor as a whole. A bit circular in logic, but as this phenomenon is a basal force of the universe this is to be expected.
Why does any closed system tend towards equilibrium? Because it does.

Shaman
*** Let's get this clear now: the MC is a trans woman. This is not a gender-bender. It's set in a fantasy world but the exploration of identity and gender is reality-based. Not a joke, not a kinky turn-on. If this is a problem for you, please just act like an adult and look elsewhere for something to read. *** Rating breakdown, since that should be public info: 2 x 5*, 1 x 4.5*, 1 x 3*, no reasons offered. A human shaman and healer returns from several years with the mysterious shyani, accompanied by her shapeshifting puma best friend. A valued friend, from her previous identity as a male student physician, has acquired an old shyani book, and extremists will not tolerate its presence in human hands. But back in human lands, the question arises: which world does she belong in? Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts. As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill. Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her. But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal? *** Trigger warning: there are scenes of Vixen's previous life, which include some difficult moments and culminate in an (obviously unsuccessful) attempt at suicide before she finds her true self and a better life. Please be careful! This is the ONLY reason for the "Traumatising Content" tag.*** Complete stand-alone novel, 96K words. Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.

The First Half
"Kyran Hall, the Goddess Sada bestows you this gift." With those words, his life changed dramatically. He was granted a System, unique among all others, and abilities unseen before in the world. Granted boundless potential, he and his party would soon rise to prominence, becoming some of the greatest adventurers the world had ever see- *Ahem* Sorry, I've been told by the MC to say he's just an average guy. Nothing special about him. A traditional fantasy story with a (hopefully) new twist on the magic system. There's adventure, combat, monsters, magic, banter, and of course: pork belly. I'm new to writing fiction, and still learning to be more efficient in my brainstorming and editing process. If you have any feedback or suggestions, let me know! If you see any typos, mock me as much as you want because I should feel bad about it.
