《Dreamland》Chapter 173 – Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire -S

Spartacius took refuge between a couple of massive rocks, forming a makeshift shelter, and attempted to regulate his rapid and uneven breathing. His lungs were on fire, his legs barely obeying his commands, and sweat trickled down his temples and back. He wiped the perspiration off his forehead with the back of his hand and listened intently to detect any sounds of his pursuers still on his trail.
The silence was ominous. Spartacius couldn't tell if his pursuers had given up or if they were trying to surround him. He was aware that he might have entered an area filled with dangerous beasts, and the orcs might have been cautious about pursuing him in such an environment.
He glanced down at his left hand, which was covered in blood and missing a finger - the same finger that had held the ring.
He cursed himself for what he had done. It was a colossal screw-up that had likely doomed Alice and the others to a slow and terrible death. He desperately tried to recall the path he had taken and where precisely the ring had gone missing.
It all began when he discovered a narrow escape route from their prison. Upon his return, he suggested that they all hide in the ring's enormous barn while he led them out. Alice disagreed, claiming that she was stronger and faster and would have a better chance of escaping on her own. However, he argued that a group escape would be unlikely to succeed. Even with Cala, they had barely survived and had been pushed into their current prison; how could Alice do it alone? Sid couldn't assist them, as most of the passage was too narrow for him, except for one or two enormous caverns. Some parts of the route were too narrow, even for the Lynx.

Where force would not succeed, a ruse might. He had a goblin transformation disguise in his inventory that could help him pass as a hobgoblin, and in the worst-case scenario, he might have to collaborate with the orcs for a while. The transformation spell was only meant for him, tailor-made for a specific quest. If he had to fight, he would open the portal and summon Alice and the Lynx.
They debated for hours before finally agreeing to his plan. Tina had suggested waiting for Cala to rescue them. The Lynx was simply against it and believed they needed a better idea. However, after much discussion, he was able to convince Sid and Tina to support his plan. Alice and the Lynx remained opposed but ultimately agreed to go along with the majority. With Sid and Tina on board, they all entered the ring's barn, and he set off on his own.
Things went smoothly at first as he slipped through the narrow passage, but he soon found himself caught between two groups of approaching goblins, leaving him with no choice but to find a hiding spot.
However, before he could find a suitable hiding spot, one of the goblins spotted him and gestured in his direction. He briefly considered fighting them off but ultimately chose diplomacy and waved back. The goblins approached him in a friendly manner.
Despite not being able to speak the goblin language, he was well-versed in their sign language. It was a highly developed method of communication that was widely used among different tribes, as their spoken languages varied greatly. He had interacted with goblins before and had even struck some deals with them, although most of their encounters usually ended in violent clashes. But this time, he was disguised as a hobgoblin, so things should go more smoothly.

Unfortunately, he had miscalculated their cunning and greed. He did not expect the smaller goblins to attack him. He had correctly judged that he would be victorious in a fight with them, but they did not intend to fight him, just to rob him.
As they passed a very narrow passage between two rooms, where he had to slip with the feet first, one of the goblins behind him swiftly cut off his finger with the ring and fled. Of course, the damn goblins had seen the ring was of value.
He pursued the culprit, but the others obstructed his path. He lost valuable time fighting and driving them away before continuing his pursuit. The goblins tossed the ring back and forth among themselves, attempting to confuse him. He would have lost the ring in the dark caverns if it hadn't been for Tina's spell. She had enchanted the ring with a simple light spell that would activate as soon as it lost connection with him. When one of the goblins had removed the ring from the severed finger, he triggered the spell and revealed its location.
Upon seeing the light of the ring activate, he swiftly turned towards the little goblin who had been hiding in a crevasse behind him. With his sword in hand, he plunged it into the crevasse, hoping to force the little goblin to give him the ring back; however, to his dismay, the frightened little goblin yelled and dropped the ring, and tried to flee to the side.
He ignored the little goblin watching with dismay as the ring fell deeper and deeper into the seemingly bottomless crevasse. The crevasse was getting narrower and narrower, the ring hitting against the walls but still falling, its light getting weaker and weaker.
As he stood there, a goblin jumped on his back, attempting to slit his throat. He fought back, killing the goblin and a few others while the rest fled in terror. After the scuffle, he turned back to the crevasse, but he could no longer see the ring's light.
Soon after, the goblins returned with a vengeance, and he found himself running from their hobgoblin clan. The chase was relentless, and even the orcs joined in with their hounds. Only through sheer luck did he manage to escape the cavern and evade his pursuers.
He made another attempt to recollect the spot where he had lost the ring, but even if the caverns were completely unoccupied, he doubted he would ever be able to locate that exact place again. He would need to search the caverns systematically, eventually with a team. He shut his eyes and vowed to himself that he would return. He would persist until he found a way to liberate Tina, Alice, the Lynx, and Sid. But the question was, would they be able to survive and endure until his eventual return?
