《The Vale》C39

After my talk with the professor, I know it's time to listen to what the headmaster has to say. I've been avoiding and ignoring him because I know the moment I learn the truth will change me forever. I've been a nobody my whole life and whatever the headmaster says will determine my fate, at least I get to know what the fuss is about.

I sit across the headmaster, we're in his office, the only thing that separate us is the coffee table. He was surprised when I entered his office without knocking, he knew I would come, it was just a matter of time. And here I am, waiting for him to say something. He knows why I'm here.

"Would you like some coffee or maybe some biscuits?" He asks and nods towards the unwrapped biscuits in foil paper. "Damian baked those and I haven't had the chance to try them out, would you like–"

"You don't live on campus?" I don't mean for it come out as a question. I know for a fact that he doesn't live here, he's got a mansion and I've never seen him anywhere but his office.

He shakes his head. "I work here but I don't live here." He answers.

I hum and cross my legs. "Where do you live?"

"New York."

"That's like eight hours flight from here. Is that why you have a portal at the library?"

He nods, not questioning my interest in him. "I can't just create portal because this school is built with magic. The more portal I create, the more weak the school gets, so I just created a permanent one where no one can find, no one but you that is."

"I want to know everything. No bullshit. I want to know where I come from. My parents. My powers, everyfuckingthing."

"My real name is El-Gar-El. I come from another realm, Di Hipsodat. It's very far from here and only my portals can open the doors to it. My job as the royal gatekeeper of Di Hipsodat kept me busy for millennials. Your grandmother, El-Laura-El, the queen of Di Hipsodat–"

"What? Did you just say my grandmother?"

He nods and continues. "She is a warrior. The best defender of Di Hipsodat and the one true queen. She conquered worlds and her name is associated with fear. She gave birth to a son, Ulrik, your father and asked me to care for him because he was half Dihipian and half Mesdowellian. Mesdowell is a planet located in another solar system and all of whom inhabit it are superior beings, they are stronger even stronger than Dihipians. I brought your father to earth because that was the last known location of his father, Kai Stark. I changed my name to Dean Wallace and your father's name to Eric Stark. He grew up on Earth but he didn't grow up as a royal or a Dihipian because that's what his mom wanted. He knew where he's from but never asked questions. As time went on his powers began to grow, I did everything I could to teach him to control it but there's always a weakness. And the first day we found that your father's weakness was fire, he let go, destroying half the block and everyone else with it.

"Ulrik blamed himself and vowed never to use his powers. We couldn't find Kai but we found his mansion in New York and we relocated there from Cornwall where we first landed. He met your mother, Sabine in College and they hit it off immediately. I knew Sabine was a witch and I told him about it. I advised against their relationship because I knew her father, the high lord wouldn't accept Ulrik because he wasn't a wizard. He didn't listen, he went ahead and told her about what happened when he lost control of his power. Sabine's guard heard the conversation and told high lord, his disgust for Ulrik grew. They loved each other, your parents, they really did. And they fought despite the world being against them.

"When your mother got pregnant with you and told her parents, they didn't accept it. Ulrik fled with Sabine, they got married and I offered to take them to Di Hipsodat, they would be safe there but she was pregnant and he didn't want to take any chances. So he said we'll go after your birth. High Lord found them after, they took Sabine and forced your birth and took you from your mother. Your father came for the both of you but they knew his weakness and set the whole place on fire, killing him in the process. I was able to rescue your mother while Damian got you. We gave you to her and stayed with you but your mother, she was depressed. From forcing your birth and your father dying, she couldn't handle you, so she left and never returned. Damian looked for her and he found her at her father's house.

"You couldn't stay with us because we had to return to Di Hipsodat and we couldn't take you with us. So I approached Corrine and Richard. I asked them to give you a normal childhood, so you wouldn't have to worry about where you come from. I told them to call once you started showing any tendencies of power display. I knew it was inevitable. You're part witch, part Dihipian and part Mesdowellian. All part strong and equal. You have your father's eye and your grandmother's face.

"Sebastian Holmes is your mother's brother. I approached him and gave him a job here because I needed to keep an eye on him. They know you survived and they're just waiting for the perfect time to approach you."

He stops and takes a breath.

"That's a lot and I'm still so confused. I have so many questions. Why did you lie when I told you Arihmatheo showed me my parents?"

"Because Arihmatheo works for George Holmes, the high lord. He was Sabine's guard and also the one that told them about your father's weakness. He cannot be trusted."

"But he was telling the truth."

"He was and just like the sisters of the dark stole something from you, he might have let you inside his mind to get information about you."

Okay, this is a lot.

"I need to go, I'm going to come back," I get up on my feet and rush out. I can't, I just can't. Everything I thought I knew. It wasn't even close. Aliens are real and I'm a product of three different species.

I think I need a break and I know just the place to go.

"Inviting Alicia to our table is just crazy. What were you thinking?!" Jessica whisper-yells at me.

I push all thought of my origins and enjoy lunch with my friends before I confront it.

The three of us are sitting at our usual table at the cafeteria. Both of them still freak out about inviting Alicia to eat lunch.

"The both of you were a part of their clique like a week ago, aren't you being hypocrites?" I roll my eyes at them.

Jessica's mouth drops open before saying, "Actually you are right."

"Incoming." Nate whispers.

Jessica and I turn our heads to the side to see Alicia approaching. She smiles when she reaches our table with her lunch. "Hey guys." She tucks the loose strands of her dark hair behind her ear.

I smile and shift for her to sit. "Hi, how was potion making?" I ask curiously.

She shakes her head and shows us her hands. "Bad," she frowns.

Her fingers are black. Something definitely went wrong with it. "Nice paint, Al," Nate mocks and winks at her.

Jessica clears her throat and nudges his stomach with her elbow. "What–" Jessica fills his mouth with fries to stop him from talking.

I cover my mouth to stop myself from laughing so hard. "Real classy Jessica," I tease. Never thought the day would come when I'd see Jessica jealous.

"Are you guys going for the post test party at the old barn?" Alicia asks.

I look at Nate and Jessica. "I don't do parties, so no I'm not going."

"We are coming," Jessica answers for the both of them.

"Cool."

Cool my ass.

"Oh, would you look at that?" A familiar voice says. Groaning, I close my eyes and shake my head at the sound of Penelope's voice.

She and Alyssa approaching our table. I stand up before they can reach us, waiting for them to say something that will earn them a punch in the nose.

"Step aside, Cami. We are not here for you," Alyssa says.

I chuckle. "You are approaching my table. Everyone at this table is my friend, so I'll say you are here for me. Step away and everything will be okay, nobody will go spend useless hours in a experion de shit."

Penelope scrunches her nose and stands toe to toe with me. "You think you are so tough, Cami, but you are nothing. You don't want to cross me," she warns.

I pinch the bridge of my nose. "I think we both know who is crossing whom here," I whisper, but I know my words carry weight. "And I remember who spent hours at the nurse's office after our last encounter."

She releases a deep breath as she backs away. I sigh in relief when she walks away, pulling a confused Alyssa with her.

"That was epic," Alicia squeals, as I go back to sit down. "Those two scare me, especially Penelope. I can't believe you scared her off..."

Nate and Jessica chirps in. I zone out of the entire conversation.

On our way to my room, Jessica and Nate won't stop arguing about the answers they got at the chemistry test. I roll my eyes at them before I hear my phone vibrating, it's an unknown number.

"Quiet," I screech at Nate and Jessica as I pick the call.

"Is this Cami Starling?" An unfamiliar voice asks from the other side.

"Cami Stark, yes. What can I do for you?"

"Any relationship with Corinne and Richard Starling?"

"Yes, they are my parents. What's wrong?"

"I'm sorry to inform you that Richard and Corrine were found dead in his hotel room and–"

"Just say they were both murdered."

"I'm sorry Miss-"

I'm sorry Miss.

I'm sorry Miss.

I'm sorry Miss.

I remove my phone from my ear and throw it against the wall.

They're waiting for me to act. Now they just made me angry enough to blow up.
