《Learn How To Love》Prom: Kevin And Jamie's Version

💫

On the night of Beach City's summer prom, Kevin pulled up at the end of Jamie's driveway and walked up to the door like a gentleman.

"Like a gentleman," he muttered to himself, almost as a reminder.

With a yellow boutonniere in his left hand, Kevin raised his right to ring the doorbell, his hand quivering slightly from the nerves. Not even a second after the bell rung throughout the house, Kevin could hear Jamie's hurried footsteps through the front door.

On the opposite side of the door, Jamie hesitated for a moment. He checked his reflection in the hallway mirror, and slicked back a few stray hairs with the sweat from his palms. Then, after a series of deep and shaky breaths, he opened the door.

"Hey!" Jamie smiled, leaning against the door frame with his arm. He was trying to be cool, but he just looked tense.

"Hey," Kevin nodded... also trying to be cool.

"I like your-"

"So should we-"

"Oh, yeah- we can-"

"Oh, right thank you!"

"Did you want to-"

"I also like-"

"Sorry, you go first."

"No, no, you can go first."

The two boys bumbled about, spouting apologies, and continuing to talk over each other.

Finally, it was quiet.

After a good thirty seconds of waiting for someone to speak, Jamie cleared his throat; "um, is that for me?" he asked, glancing at the boutonnière in Kevin's hand.

"Hm? Oh! Yeah," Kevin stammered and fidgeted with the small bundle of flowers. "Here," he said, about to pin it to the lapel of Jamie's jacket.

Jamie's face flushed lightly as he watched Kevin work. He was so close, he could see every detail of his face... He had great skin.

Kevin's eyes glanced upward at Jamie's for a moment... before they both looked away.

"There," Kevin stepped back triumphantly. "Looking good," he smirked.

Jamie laughed nervously, "hah- thanks."

They both admired each other for a moment, standing quietly by the door.

"Shall we?" Kevin asked, his arm outstretched.

Jamie smiled, a sucker for the gentleman act. "We shall," he took Kevin's arm.

With Kevin's addiction to partying, and Jamie's love for musical theatre, they actually made quite the dance duo. Lit in deep hues of pink and purple, the two boys sparkled on the dance floor. A handful of other prom-goers stopped what they were doing to watch them dance. They even started to cheer for them. Eventually, Kevin and Jamie found themselves in the center of a dance circle.

Jamie sung along to the music, belting his heart out and acting out the lyrics as if his life depended on it. Kevin laughed in awe and took a step back, unintentionally joining the edge of the circle. He cheered Jamie on as he whipped out a fully choreographed dance routine. He had been waiting for this moment his whole life.

At the climax of the number, the big finish, Jamie did a lap around the inside of the circle to get everyone excited, then came center. He was gonna do it. He'd never done it outside his room, but he was finally going to do it. Before the crowd knew what was happening, Jamie did a death drop... into a split. And the crowd went wild.

"JAMIE!" Kevin hollered, shoving his way through the crowd to get to him. "Where did that even come from?!" Kevin laughed, gripping Jamie's shoulders.

Jamie, who was still on the floor, looked up at Kevin gleefully.

"I-"

"Alright dudes," Sour Cream's voice echoed. "It's time to slow these jams down..."

Kevin stood up straight and held his hand out for Jamie to take. "Here," he said, smiling warmly. Jamie returned the smile and took Kevin's hand. Even after they were both standing, their hands stayed clasped.

"This next song's gonna be sung by the guy who brought us all here tonight," Sour Cream spoke. "So without further ado, I give you... the one and only... Steven Universe!"

"How's it going, everyone?" Steven's voice replaced Sour Cream's.

"Oh man, this kid's gonna talk forever," Kevin rolled his eyes with a smile.

"He does love to give speeches," Jamie agreed.

"You wanna dance?" Kevin muttered by Jamie's ear.

"Sans dance circle this time," Jamie smiled.

"Good idea," Kevin agreed, leading Jamie by his hand to a more remote section of the dance floor. Most everyone was crowded by the stage, but if Kevin wanted to see a concert, he would have just gone to a concert.

And as much as Jamie loved a performance, he would much rather watch Kevin than Steven.

And so, the two boys danced on the outskirts of the crowd, with no one to think of but each other. Kevin gently lifted Jamie's hands to his shoulders, and positioned his on Jamie's waist. Jamie's skin heated up under Kevin's touch. A sort of excited tingle grew from the spot and spread throughout his body. He shivered slightly, covering it up with a wide and nervous grin.

Kevin smiled lightly, his lips pressed together. He rubbed his thumbs back and forth across Jamie's torso, keeping eye contact all the while. He couldn't tell if it was the thumping bass of the music, or the fact that he was dancing with the guy he liked, but Kevin's heart began to pound. He hid it well, though. He had gotten good at that.

Jamie's eyes darted left and right, wanting to make eye contact, but being too nervous at the same time. Kevin's eyebrows creased slightly.

He was nervous, too. They were both nervous. Who wouldn't be nervous? They were on a date after all. Nervous is natural.

And it was exactly that thought that eased all of Kevin's worries.

He blew out a breath of air he felt like he'd been holding in for years. And then he smiled. A genuine, toothy smile that lit up the room.

"You okay?" Jamie looked up at Kevin, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah," he answered. "Just... nervous."

"You're nervous?"

"Yeah, of course I am."

"Oh," Jamie breathed a sigh of relief. "Well that makes me feel better."

"You too?"

"Yeah. Was that not obvious?"

Kevin chuckled lightly. It was obvious, but he wasn't gonna tell him that.

"Why are you nervous?" He asked instead, inching closer.

Jamie forced his eyes to meet Kevin's, and in a moment of bravery, brushed his hand from Kevin's shoulder to the back of his neck.

"Why are you nervous?" Jamie muttered, leaning in close.

Kevin could feel the soft tickle of Jamie's breath beneath his nose. His eyelids flitted up and down, switching his gaze between Kevin's eyes and his lips. Kevin found himself pulling Jamie in by his waist, ever so slightly, subconsciously craving more. Kevin lowered his head while Jamie raised his, their lips less than an inch apart.

Everything stilled when their lips finally touched. Gentle and light, the kiss sent warm sparks throughout both their bodies- the two of them perfectly in sync. Jamie's hand wandered from Kevin's neck to his cheek- he felt Kevin's blush.

Kevin gave in and let himself pull Jamie forward, wanting to be even closer. It was hard to resist- his heart just wouldn't shut up. Jamie leaned into it, nearly swooning at the gesture. To say he was a hopeless romantic would be an understatement.

When the two boys finally pulled apart, neither of them could find anything to say. They just stared at each other in awe.

"Woah-"

"Did you see that?"

"Where did he go?"

Jamie and Kevin turned their attention toward the stage, where the medium sized crowd had grown to a huddle of every single guest.

"What's going on?"

"Steven and (Y/N)!"

"They fused!"
