《Learn How To Love》Prom: Part One

While you stood there struggling to put words together, Steven hollered to Sour Cream; "hit it!"

Completely dumbfounded, you stared at Steven, who turned to you with his big dopey grin.

"I've always wanted to do that," he beamed.

"Host a prom in August?" you squinted.

"No," he smirked. "I've always wanted to say 'hit it,' like the cool kids in Disney movies do."

"Steven, that's so dumb," you laughed, your eyes never leaving his. Absentmindedly, you took his hands in yours, letting them hang between you.

"Yeah, I know," he smiled warmly, his eyes relaxing into yours.

"Ahem," Jenny cleared her throat from behind you.

You looked over your shoulder at Jenny and Buck, who stared at you and Steven knowingly.

"Jenny! Buck!" You grinned, pulling each of them into a hug. "How was the cheese rave?" you asked Jenny skeptically.

"The... what?" Steven cocked his head to the side.

"It was the only thing I could think of on the spot!" Jenny whined.

"You guys are literally the worst liars ever," you rolled your eyes.

Buck smiled; "guilty."

"C'mon-" Steven squeezed your hand. "Let's dance."

You followed Steven to the dance floor, holding hands all the while, and couldn't help but laugh.

Steven stopped to look at you puzzledly. "What?" he asked, smiling through the confusion.

"I don't know!" you replied in hysterics. "I think I'm just... really happy."

Steven's confusion melted into a grin, and before you knew it, he was laughing too.

Then, the two of you were just jumping up and down to the music, eyes creased with laughter, without a care in the world.

Just you and Steven, at prom...

with most of Beach City, too.

"Alright dudes," Sour Cream said, his voice booming through the speakers. "It's time to slow these jams down."

The crowd's movements slowed to a stop as Sour Cream turned off the music. Steven squeezed your hand and smiled, then made his way to the side of the stage.

"This next song's gonna be sung by the guy who brought us all here tonight," Sour Cream continued. "So without further ado, I give you... the one and only... Steven Universe!"

Sour Cream placed the mic onto the stand for Steven, who waved to the crowd as he strolled onstage.

"How's it going, everyone?" Steven smiled sheepishly, taking the mic in hand. "I hope we're all having a good time, I know I am," he glanced at you meaningfully. "This next song is one I wrote, for someone really special to me. The first time we ever hung out was to write a song together for the Beach City talent show- you all might remember that. Anyway, I got to watch her perform her song, but she never got to see my spectacular performance. And although this isn't exactly what I sang that night, it's exactly what I've wanted to tell you since then. So, yeah! This one's for you, (Y/N)."

Steven took a deep breath, and in the moments before the song began, all eyes in the crowd seemed to drift towards you. You ignored them and eagerly watched the stage as the song started.

"Sweeter than vanilla and stronger than coffee,

A night full of endless stars, shining on the sea.

Walking you home, I get sand in my toes.

Even singing this song- the feeling grows."

Steven's eyes shone bright, his nerves melting away through the song. You marveled at the sight. He looked so... happy. Seeing him happy just... made you happy.

"The sunlight that glows off the top of the ocean,

The things that we wanted to say, but weren't spoken.

The light summer breeze that flows through your hair-

You're with me all the time, even when you're not there."

You grinned at the lyrics, subconsciously swaying along to the music. During an instrumental break, the crowd cheered. Everyone clapped and cheered and danced along to their hearts desire. Then just when you thought it couldn't get better, it got better.

As the chorus began, everyone around you got out their phones. Switching on their flashlights, the crowd raised their phones over their heads and swayed to the slow beat. Surrounding you completely, the lights twinkled and moved hypnotically in unison. It looked... like a night full of endless stars.

"I hear your voice, like a whisper in the wind.

And I can

Feel your touch

In the sunlight setting golden, holding-

Me and you

Everywhere, all the time.

I am yours, and you are mine.

Because you...

You're a universe, too."

Now that... that was the line that got you.

Everywhere he looks, he thinks of you. You're his world, his universe. And now with that note, and your dress...

You looked down at the carefully beaded gemstones of your birth month and smiled.

You were a Universe and a Crystal Gem.

"I see your eyes,

In the campfire, bright and captivating,

Smell the rain,

Like a warm embrace after time away. I can-

Taste your lips;

From the cookie dough we made together,

All the time we spent this summer,

Made you

Into a universe, too."

You laughed out loud, remembering your food fight with Steven over those damn cookies. There were bits of eggshell in your hair for weeks. Tears of happiness slowly replaced your subsiding laugh as you marveled at Steven. You let them fall, grinning widely all the while.

"Because you-

Are in everything I see and do

And you-

Have changed my life, my world, my point of view.

And there's nothing that I wouldn't do for you

Because you,

Oh baby, you...

You're a universe, too."

Steven floated down from the stage, and almost as if it was choreographed, the crowd parted around him. The only people left at the foot of the stage were Steven... and you.

You knew the song was for you, but... now he was really singing it to you. Like no one else in the world existed. It was just you and him as he sung the very last chorus. The air buzzed between the two of you, completely electric, as he moved closer with every step. Never taking his eyes off of you, Steven sang quietly into the mic, the words landing differently now that he was right in front of you.

"You're a universe too..."

As the last note rang out, Steven let his arm fall to the side and searched your eyes. He wasn't sure what he was looking for, if anything. But he was afraid to look away. Like if he let you out of his sight, you'd disappear.

You stared right back. You had never felt so safe, so wanted.

So loved.

You held his face in your hands, his soft eyes burning through you, and it suddenly all became too much. You didn't know whether to kiss him or to hug him, so you did both. You pulled him close and pressed your lips to his, your arms wrapped tightly around his chest.

Then the whole world went white.
