Steven arrived to pick you up promptly at 6, as promised. Always on time, that one. He wouldn't say what the two of you were doing- he'd always change the subject after insisting that you were both just "hanging out." And for several winning rounds of MarioKart at his house, you forgot about all of your suspicions and believed him. You became too focused to care. Focused on winning every. single. round.

"Dude!" Steven exclaimed after you had won for the third time in a row.

"I swear it's gotta be dumb luck," you laughed defensively. "I'm usually not this good."

Steven chuckled and started scrolling through different maps to race next, but nearly threw the controller across the room when he heard his phone buzz.

And just like that, your suspicions reignited.

"What's up?" You asked skeptically. "Got a hot date? Oh, wait..." you trailed off and lazily pointed to yourself. "No, that can't be it."

"No, no," Steven smiled and shook his head. "That's definitely it."

You pointedly raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, hey-" Steven said, putting his phone down. "I got you a present!" He hopped off the bed and reached underneath to pull out a long, white box. It was the kind of box you would usually be gifted during the holidays with clothes inside that didn't fit you. A hand-written note taped to the top of the box read: "you're a crystal gem now :)"

Stunned, you peeled off the thin white lid from the box and gasped.

"I... kind of have an eye for dress sizes."

You stared at him, dumbfounded.

"Wh- You... I-"

"Go on, try it on!"

You got up slowly, still in shock, and made your way to the bathroom- almost falling down the stairs as you were trembling so hard. Looking at yourself in the mirror after you had changed, you admired your body in the most beautiful dress you had ever seen. The sparkled bodice accentuated your waist and bust, and melted into a tulle skirt that stopped just shy of the floor. You worried it might be too long, but to your left, resting on the side of the bathtub, was a shoebox.

You slipped on the shoes- which luckily had very thick heels, and noticed how they were either made custom or came with the dress, as they matched the color perfectly. In the mirror, a glint caught your eye and you finally saw it. Decorating the neckline was miniature beads made from your birthstone. Now you understood what he meant with that note. Although tears pricked at the corners of your eyes, you grinned ear to ear and gave the dress a good spin. Dancing by yourself in the bathroom. And Steven was right- he was good with dress sizes. It fit you like a glove.

You could have stared at your reflection forever, but you were interrupted by a knock at the door. You brought your shaking hand to the doorknob and opened the door to see Steven... in a tuxedo... with a corsage.

"Steven, what is all of this?" You spoke, barely above a whisper, as he secured the corsage to your wrist.

"You'll see," he smiled knowingly. "But first... close your eyes."

"Uh..."

"Trust me."

You sighed and let your eyelids fall.

"Are you sure you're not peeking?" Steven asked doubtfully, squeezing your hand.

"I'm sure," your eyes creased and shut tighter while you giggled nervously. Steven lead you by your right hand, squeezing it playfully every once in a while as you walked. You stopped and, after a moment, heard the temple door open. Steven walked behind you, gently pushing you forward. You kept your eyes shut tight and your eyebrows furrowed, but moved your head around as your other senses took in your surroundings. Indie music played lowly from all around you, and smells of cotton candy and fruit punch flooded the air.

"Okay, you can open your eyes... now!" Steven let go of your hand and you opened your eyes to reveal... probably the entire town of Beach City and then some gathered under a banner that read; "SUMMER PROM 20XX!" You stared in awe at the smiling faces looking back at you; everyone clean and dressed in formal gowns and suits.

"Steven...?" You looked over at the boy, who stared back at you, enjoying every second of your reaction.

"You said I'd like prom, right?"
