《Learn How To Love》The Perfect Cup Of Coffee

The sun rose over the beach at about 6AM. The sunbeams streaked through the window, spilling onto your face. Your eyelids fluttered lightly as you came to consciousness. You looked around, your eyes still adjusting to the light, and found Steven. Fast asleep, he laid beside you with his arms wrapped round your waist. You smiled sleepily and turned on your side to lay facing him. His mouth was slightly open, his jaw completely relaxed, and you couldn't help but notice that he was just barely snoring. He looked so peaceful. There was something about watching him sleep that made you feel warm and fuzzy inside... Safe.

Though, after a while, you just felt creepy watching him sleep.

You closed your eyes and rolled over, careful not to wake Steven up, before scooting back and making yourself the little spoon. You yawned and pulled the comforter up to your chin, making Steven stir.

"Nnnoo," he grumbled, his morning voice deep and raspy, "my feet."

You laughed quietly and went to readjust the blanket to cover his feet, but yelled in surprise after sitting up.

"What?" Steven shot up suddenly. "AGH!"

In the corner of Steven's room, Pearl stood still as a statue, watching you.

You were fully clothed, but you still found yourself covering your body with the comforter, embarrassed.

"PEARL!" Steven scolded.

"Sorry! Sorry!" Pearl apologized with her hands up, slowly backing away. "What's that they say about 'old habits?'"

"Just please get out," Steven groaned, his hand covering his face.

"Right," Pearl nodded and walked downstairs.

Speechless, you turned to look at Steven, who looked just as embarrassed as you.

"Sorry," he sighed. "That happens... more often than I would like to admit."

"It's fine," you relaxed a bit, "she just startled me."

"Believe me," Steven groaned and stood up, "I know."

You smiled wearily and stood up, leaning back and stretching out your legs.

"Before that jumpscare, that was probably the best night's sleep I've ever had," you smiled, fixing your hair.

"It's a good bed," was all Steven could manage in response.

The two of you laughed, sharing maybe 2 and 1/2 braincells altogether.

"I am very tired," Steven said, almost sounding drunk.

"I can tell," you chuckled sleepily.

Two knocks sounded at the bottom of the stairs.

"Pearl, no. You're banned from my room!" Steven hollered, his morning voice raspy and cracking slightly.

"Is Garnet?" A voice called from downstairs.

Steven grinned; "no, come on up."

Now at the top of the stairs, the Garnet stood in front of you, or more appropriately, over you. If you had to guess, she was probably 6 feet and then some.

"Steven, Steven's... friend," she spoke.

"Hi..." you brought your hand up and waved slightly.

"I bring coffee," she said, and she did indeed have coffee. She handed you and Steven one mug each. You took a sip and almost cried on the spot.

"It's... perfect," you looked back and forth between Garnet and your drink in awe.

Steven hummed in agreement; "no one makes coffee like Garnet."

She nodded with a slightly goofy smile, tapping her sunglasses.

"Right," you put two and two together, "that's how you knew what I would like."

"Is that also why you made coffee in the first place?" Steven asked skeptically. "Because you knew she would wake us up at 6am?"

"Pearl says she's sorry."

"It's fine, just... please keep her out of my room," Steven groaned.

"Steven, I'm sorry," Garnet shook her head. "No one could ever keep Pearl away from you."

"Yeah," he rolled his eyes. "I know."

Garnet nodded and turned to go downstairs, but hesitated.

"Go camping tonight, not tomorrow," she said, glancing over her shoulder. "There's rain tomorrow."

"Good to know," Steven shrugged and looked to you as Garnet made her way downstairs. "Guess we should get packing, huh?"

You sighed; "yeah."

"You can take the mug with you."

"Okay, good."

💫

At your house, you hopped out of the car, leaving the mug in the cupholder with no trace of coffee left inside. Steven, being the gentleman that he is, walked you to your door.

"Pick you up at 5?" He offered once you had both stopped at your doorstep.

"Works for me," you smiled.

"Great, I'll uh- I'll see you then," Steven smiled sheepishly before leaving a light peck on your lips.

You smiled back and admired his face before he stepped away. You felt a pang of sadness to see him leaving, even though you knew you'd be seeing him later that same day. It was only as he drove off that you realized why.

You loved him.
