《It's just me and you》Chapter 24- Karma pt. 1

If I were to make an affirmation, expressing that I'm disappointed right now, it would certainly be the biggest understatement of my life.

After I abruptly departed from Scarlett, leaving her alone as well as leaving her office, my father immediately ended the phone call.

I grew a little worried and quickly attempted to call him back, no answer. I then patiently waited for him to eventually return the call, Instead I was instantly hit with a text message.

"Come home, we need to speak."

My eyes quickly skimmed through the text and that message alone made me incredibly anxious. I absolutely dread it when people send me vague text messages, they lead me into a spiral of overthinking.

However, I knew well enough to know that I had to follow my fathers orders and oblige to his demand, I just really hope that the matter of the issue is truly significant.

After a couple minutes of nonstop driving, along with the melodic sound of music vibrating against my windows, I finally arrived at my fathers house thus ending my short lived journey.

I then graciously park my car, stationing it carefully and taking the keys out. I eagerly make my way up the entrance steps, which happens to be quite a few might I add. I then confidently compose myself while knocking loudly on the door, no answer.

Usually Alfred immediately opens the door to welcome me, however, it's not the case as of today. This is pretty unconventional, out of the ordinary. I guess I'll have to resort to plan b.

I then walk towards the direction of a nearby plant, which actually isn't even real. It's a fake plant, meant for decoration. However, guest's certainly aren't aware of that. That's because it's also a secret safe. I twist the top clockwise and it clicks open revealing a key. My fingers grasp the key and I head back to the entrance, successfully unlocking the door.

It's quiet, almost dead silent. It makes me wonder if anyone is even home. I've watched one too many horror movies and I know that this is usually the part where a jump scare occurs. So to avoid any conflict, I quickly start running towards my fathers office. Im fast, if there's a murder they won't be able to catch me. Not on my watch.

I then aggressively burst into my fathers office basically damaging his doors in the process. I then instantly notice him sitting in his chair and he gasps frighteningly while glancing up at me disapprovingly.

"The fuck is the matter with you?!" He furiously asks.

I'm so confused, and so out of breath. I tiredly shrug my shoulders in response as I stare at him with concern.

He then removes his glasses and stands up worriedly "Is everything all right? What happened?" He questions curiously.

I laugh mockingly "I could ask you the same. Why'd you call me? No actually, why'd you call me and then proceed to ignore my calls?" I ask agitatedly.

He frustratedly sighs "I needed to speak with you about something but it certainly isn't important enough for you to go down destroying my office!" He bitterly states.

I scoff "What about our deal? You only call me when something important happens, you told me that." I inform.

He frowns and shakes his head "It was a mistake, honey. I forgot about our little deal and it was already too late. I was dialing your number when I realized, so I decided to send a message instead. I'm sorry, it's my fault. " He defends apologetically.

I impatiently sigh "Where's Alfred? What is it that you had to speak with me about?" I ask concerned.

He clears his throat and gestures for me to take a seat across his desk, which I hesitantly do so. He then slowly takes a seat on his own chair composing his demeanor and a cold tension fills the room.

Oh no.

I instantly stand up "Is Alfred dead?" my voice cracks as I ask and I swear it almost felt like my heart stopped functioning in that moment.

Suddenly, my father starts chocking and as I begin to walk towards him to help, his wholehearted laughter erupts throughout the room.

I furrow my brows in confusion, am I dreaming or something? This certainly has to be a nightmare. No, maybe I'm dead actually.

My father then wipes his joyful tears and gazes at me "Alfred is not dead, y/n. I sent him on an important errand, he'll be back soon." He informs happily.

A breath of relief escapes my lips as I slowly take my seat once more "I don't want to sound rude but please, get to the goddamn point." I demand.

He smiles softly "I'm hosting a party tonight and I need your help with a small yet important task." He asks.

What the fuck.

A party. I could've had so much more than a fucking party. I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time right now. I had a chance, a really good chance and now it's gone.

Honestly, maybe it's for the best. Things always seem to go sideways when Scarlett and I attempt to insinuate anything, maybe it's a sign. A sign that nothing more should happen between us. It's truly disappointing.

My father scoffs "Y/n! Are you even listening to what I'm saying?" He asks.

I shake my head "Why me? I was in the middle of something incredibly important to me and It was interrupted. It's simply unfair. How could you possibly require my help?" I ask disappointedly.

He frowns "I'm sorry to hear that, I am. I didn't mean to interfere with you, darling. I'll let you go, it's okay I'll manage." He states.

I sigh "It's too late. Just tell me what the 'task' is and I'll do it. I certainly don't have anything better to do, not anymore." I sadly say.

He apologetically nods and continues "I want to throw a promotion party for Colin, remember him?"

You've got to be kidding me.

This is truly ironic. It's almost as if I'm God's entertainment. My intimate moment with Scarlett just so happened to be interrupted, not by my father, but by none other than Colin himself.

Maybe it's Karma from treating him poorly when he's been nothing but nice to me. Maybe it's karma from having an incredibly complicated relationship with his girlfriend. Whatever it is, I now have to pay the price.

I furrow my brows "A promotion?" I curiously ask.

My father nods "Colin has surprised me. It's as if he were made for the job, his work is impeccable and it certainly cannot go unnoticed."

I slowly nod in confusion "Alright, Now tell me what part I play in this?" I ask.

My father smiles "I have a plan. I need you to pick him up from the company building, take him home, prepare, and finally, bring him here where the real party will begin." He explains confidently.

I laugh "I'm not a babysitter, Colin's a big boy I'm sure he can prepare for a party himself."

My father scoffs "Colin doesn't know about the party, y/n. I need you to keep it a secret from him so that when you bring him here, he's surprised."

I unhappily nod in understanding "I'll pick him up from the company, drop him off at his place and then drop him off here. Got it." I repeat.

My father nods in agreement "Tell him to dress nicely and you better dress formidably as well."

I immediately shake my head "I'll do this for you but I'm certainly not staying. I'm just not in the partying mood." I say.

He furrows his brows in annoyance "You are staying. Colin admires you and I'd like him to have a friend to celebrate alongside him." He sternly says.

I frown "Come on, he doesn't need me when he'll have his girlfriend right beside him."

My father laughs "This is a promotion party for Colin, not his girlfriend. It'll just be a few business employees, CEO's, and close friends of mine."

I sigh and look at him with disapproval "You didn't invite Scarlett? Are you serious?" I ask with a hint of anger embedded in my tone.

My father shakes his head "I never said his girlfriend wasn't invited. I'm suggesting that a man always needs a friend by his side not always his significant other or coworkers."

I then slowly nod in understanding attempting to hide my sudden outburst of annoyance.

My father carefully studies me with suspicion, raising my nerves. I shouldn't have reacted like that now he'll certainly suspect something's going on.

"Speaking of Scarlett, how are things going on between the two of you?" He asks.

I furrow my brows in confusion "What do you mean? There's nothing going on between us." I nervously state.

He rolls his eyes "She's your professor isn't she? I assume things are going quite well, or at least I hope so."

I slowly nod "You assume correctly, my grades are just fine." I inform.

My father smiles "I'm proud to hear that. I'm quite fond of Scarlett, Colin always speaks highly of her."

I softly smile "Well she's far from disappointing."

My father laughs "I'm sure she is, seeing as how Colin desires to have children with her soon."

Wait what.

My father takes my silence as a queue to continue "Anyways, I just want to throw this party the best I can for Colin and I hope you'll give him your best as well." He says.

I nod "I'll give him my best, you'll see."

A thought then crosses my mind.

I clear my throat "Did you hire catering service again?" I ask.

He nods "Same as last time, why?"

I smile sheepishly at him "I'll do this favor for you but I need an even bigger one in return." I carefully inform.

He squints his eyes at me suspiciously "What have you got in mind?" He questions.

I anxiously sigh "Remember that one cater that you hired specifically for me, simply because you liked her?"

My father smiles happily "Of course. I wouldn't dare forget."

I nod and continue cautiously "Well, I like her as well and she happens to be in a very difficult dilemma."

My father then quickly composed his posture as if he's on the edge of his seat "I'm listening."

I sigh "I overheard the Dean talking about her and she's at risk of losing her education simply because she cannot pay tuition. I was just wondering if we could possibly help aid her, financially."

My father sighs "That's incredibly unfortunate. Are you sure it's her?" He asks.

I nod "I'm sure. Think of it as a long term investment. You told me that she would be an amazing assistant to me one day. She needs an education for that."

My father smirks "When did you become so noble?" He teases.

I scoff "I'm not. A favor for a favor, remember?"

He smiles "I'll have to call the Dean and as soon as I get a price point, I'll immediately pay so your future assistant can get the education she deserves."

I smile softly "I appreciate it, truly I do. I'll go pick up Colin right now." I say.

My father nods "Keep the party a secret!" He shouts as I exit the room.

I nod "Calvin won't know a thing!" I shout in return and I swear I could hear him laughing softly in his office.

As I leave my fathers home and enter my car, I can't help but sit in silence, not even bothering to turn the car on.

Colin wants kids, with Scarlett. It makes me feel guilty, I'm in the way of a future family. I'm a distraction to Scarlett that's what I am. Colin and Scarlett may have issues but they also have a history and although their relationship sometimes cloud their judgment, you can't forget about a person you love or once loved.

I'm just her student. I'll always just be a student in her eyes. I can no longer be in the way of a relationship not because I want to but because I choose to. Scarlett could be so much happier with someone like Colin rather than with someone like me. As much as I'd like to give her the world, I'd rather give her the life she truly deserves.

I sigh locking my thoughts far into my mind and starting my car. I better pick up Colin before it gets late.
