Enos had been staring at that door for hours. Hayes was asleep, the sweet child was exhausted from yesterday's trip and hadn't woken up yet. But his father has always been a man of many thoughts. And lately his head was thinking of a special woman. This woman that he has loved for years now. She was a huge part of their lives and all he wanted to do was build a future for them. The kind of life they deserved.

He knew that staring at that door , Willing Elisabeth to come wouldn't bring her there but Enos stared just the same.

As if by twisted luck , a knock was heard from the door, and when Enos approached to open it, it was her. She was beautiful as always, even with that buzzcut that he considered quite adorable.

Enos unwaveringly embraced Elisabeth in his arms and the weight of it all clouded his eyes from seeing that Betty didn't fully reciprocate that gesture of love as they stood by the door.

"Tell me you are here to stay?" He whispered in her ear slowly.

Betty closed her eyes as she buried her face against his chest. His scent had changed, she noticed. But it was just as intoxicating as she remembers it.

She dreaded the idea of letting him down. Enos wasn't perfect, and their history was just as beautiful as it was devastating in the end. Betty wouldn't forget how she stripped herself down of any moral she had for him. She forgot herself with him. She gave it all to him, her heart, her body, every inch of it, her pride. The many nights she let him open her up inside out. He saw her for who she was and she hid nothing. He knew it all. And he once used that knowledge to overpower her. To bring her down to her very lowest. To a place she might have never gotten out of mentally.

And Betty feared, if he could do that once, he could do it again, and she would probably let him. There was always this part of her that got so used to them being together in that level of openness. And though Enos walked over that privilege, Betty would still allow it. And it wasn't about love. Enos was Betty's haven. To her, Enos felt like the arms she was used to. He was her person in a way she found difficult to explain. No words could describe it. It wasn't love, more than just pleasure and comfort and peace and rest, it was...... Something. It was just there. And it was strong. They could both feel it all around. But it was deadly. It was safe until it wasn't.

And that's as far as she would cross the line.

It was a thin line between safe and danger. Beautiful and tragic. If she would choose him, it was either pure heaven, or a never ending hell.

And maybe that knowledge was what changed her mind. That she woke up the next morning and chose James instead. Because she remembered just how much Enos was capable of hurting her. As much as he could love her, she knew the kind of hurt Enos could potentially cause would be the type she wouldn't ever recover. Perhaps there was something that could hurt more than love, that thing ..... Whatever it was, she had it with Enos, and she knew it could tear her apart.

She already knew how bad love could ruin you. She experienced it with James. But this other type of damage, the one with no name, that which existed between her and Enos, she didn't want to test the waters of it. Because perhaps it could not just ruin her , but everything around them, including Hayes.

And that's the limit.

"I'm not here to stay." She responded between shallow breaths. Enos could swear he felt his heart stop.

"Betty, please don't do this!" He held her tighter, closer that their bodies touched.

"I can't keep lying to myself. I've been running for far too long. I love James, you've always known this Enos."

"And what about us? What about everything we share? And more than that, we have a child." He implored, "I can't lose you again. I've spent two years grieving for the living, and now that I know you are alive, it kills me too think you won't let me celebrate you, love you, be with you in everyway."

She really wanted to cry.

He sounded so defeated.

"Enos, you deserve a woman who would love you."

"I don't want any other woman's love. I want this thing I share with you. Whatever it is. It's all I have been dreaming of for the longest time. Don't let us end like this." It was his hardest request. Betty wasn't ready for this. She thought about it. And for a while she truly believed it could work but she loves James. And with Enos, it's just too overwhelming. Love can give you strength to push through each day. But what she had with Enos, it was bound to be hopeless. And the burnout would be too painful after everything they'd go through.

"You have to let me move on from this. We will raise our son together but I can't be with you in the ways you want me to." She insisted.

Enos was dying inside. And as he held onto her, the dreams he had of them slowly slipped away into a moment in time. Because she was never his. Back to when they were still changing for the better, in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, wanting her was enough, for him, it was enough. Living for the hope of it all, cancel plans just incase she needed him, sacrificing so much for falling in love, she was his......to lose.

"Can I kiss you?" He asked her .

"You are placing us in a fatal position." She could hear her own heart beating.

"Give me something to hold on to." Enos held her cheeks in his hands as they looked at it each other. "Do this for me. So I don't have to search for those lips in every woman I'll meet."

Betty closed her eyes and allowed it.

She knew what could come from him touching her this way. That feeling of security, that familiarity, the urge to settle down in the comfort of his embrace, she was used to it that it felt like a constant need. Have you ever been so used to someone that living without them is a punishment or a curse? Thats how Betty and Enos felt. She didn't know what to call it, and neither did he.

Enos kissed her lips. And Betty was leaning in. The existence of that driving force pushed them to explore each other's mouths further than intended. Their breaths hitched as Enos tasted her lips for one last time.

And even though Enos knew he could push this act further than just her mouth, he held himself back for another time, because deep down Enos also remembered the day he brought Betty beneath him and it shuttered her. He wouldn't make that mistake again. He promises himself this everyday.

Enos will eventually come to terms with the ending. Peter losing Wendy, the saying goes.

Atleast Peter could say that he tried.
