《Battleforged: Book 1 - THE BILLION CREDIT HEIST - An Earth Apocalypse LitRPG Adventure》Chapter 205 - Class Evolution (End Of Book 2)

All thoughts of corrupt administrators and backstabbing goblins left Eric the moment he was fully immersed within the futuristic-looking pod, both falling into a comatose slumber and awakening like never before, suddenly aware of the thousands upon thousands of class choices now before him.

He crowed with wonder and awe, feeling almost as if he were a bird flying in the light of the setting sun, gazing upon countless flocks of silver-winged possibilities, awed by the potential of every one.

Beyond the slow steady birds representing Warrior, Arcanist, and basic Adventurer, each granting access to Standard Class feats every ten levels and 5 stat points per level, were swifter, deadlier birds to try. Advanced classes such as Knight, Paladin, or Healer, each having increasingly exclusive powers to devote a precious nodes to, and 7 stat points per level with which to shape his body and mind into the warrior, healer, or mage, that he had always wanted to be.

Yet as delightful as it was to contemplate the possibilities of a healer, his eyes widened with fresh wonder to see magnificent specimens of countless Adept classes, including Sword Saint and Master Marksman, Adept Conjurer and Elementalist as well. And just as striking as the boon of 9 points per level and ever more exclusive node feats to choose from every ten levels, were the bonus perks that cost him no node slots to claim at all.

Will as single act of will, he could forge himself into a master of frost and fire, the earth trembling at his will, or transform himself into a warrior that had utterly mastered the potential of his blade. And how awesome would it be, to synergize Qi Attacks with a System Classer’s powers? His interface made it deliciously clear that such deadly combinations were indeed possible, and most often the province of classes known only to a select few powerful noble Houses within the local sector.

Their power and secrets could now be his, as all his struggles, hard work, and effort finally paid off.

But he resisted the Sword Saint’s call, as much as he knew that it would be one path he could walk to glorious effect through his first 100 levels before exploding onto Bronze, stopping only a half-step before Silver. A true power even his mother would acknowledge. Even if he was never quite her equal. But who knew? With a certain crooked path at his fingertips, perhaps there were ways for him to ascend further still.

Eric shook his head with a silent chuckle, still that glorious bird of prey, hunting his ideal future, realizing he didn’t have to settle even for an Adept tier classer’s glory.

He could go further still.

Flapping his wings as the sun kissed the horizon as countless Elite tier classes, the province of commanders and kings, shown all their brilliant glory.

Arcane Reavers blending sword and spell in powerful combinations fit to cleave through any foe. Elite Tier Summoners capable of raising legions of undead, or elementals more powerful than any army. Storm Wardens able to destroy entire cities with massive hurricanes, or obliterate even the greatest armies of spearmen and knights with storms of lightning beyond compare.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg, he realized, noting the myriad class choices before him, each starting with no less than three bonus powers to develop and grow at once, and 11 character points every level to blossom and grow as the deadliest of spell-swords, mages, and mech-warriors, with over twice the stat boost of standard heroes, and access Powers that the typical warrior or wand-slinger could only dream of.

And that was not all, Eric realized, his wings, fueled by the power and glory only 100% infusion could bring, allowing him to catch up to even to the city-spanning roc and the blazing phoenix of power and possibility, the final vanguard of classes available to only the most elite and privileged scions of the greatest houses with the most intensive training imaginable, Eric unable to believe the powers locked away in Master Classes like Dragon Knight, Vampire Lord, and Arch Mage.

To name just a few.

And they were all open to him. All available! All the power and potential any prince could ask for. A dizzying variety of choices before him, and for once, he actually had time to think before plunging down to claim his prize.

Because with thousands upon thousands of choices, any one of them might be the perfect fit, just for him. Any one of them might possess highly specialized perks and unexpected class synergisms that, when tied to the right affinities and heritage gifts under the right circumstances, might allow him to explode in power beyond what even the typical masterclass might grant. His own Bloodmastery affinity, when tied to the Vampire Lord Masterclass along with the Essences of Wrath and Dominion, was just one example he could think of, right off the bat.

But before he lost himself in a thousand-hour study of all the possibilities before him, somehow sensing that in those endless artificial cyber-matrix enhanced, brain-boosted moments, he really could spend a thousand hours contemplating his next step forward, two profound truths gave him pause.

One, the path to absolute glory as a basic or White Tier adventurer was clear as the golden sun of his vision as countless Master Tier phoenixes teased him with the promise of explosive power.

But it wasn’t the dawn of his adventure he needed to worry about, so much as the setting sun.

Just how far could he get beyond the first steps of ascension? Just how far could he evolve along the Path of Endless Potential before he was forced to stop for all time?

His mother, supposedly a Silver, had quite a reputation among certain circles and was clearly a force to be reckoned with. Even if she was forced to act on Earth through her children; using them as her white tier pawns in her quest to claim at least a good chunk of this newly ascended world for her own dominion.

Yet he couldn’t help but wonder, exactly how long had his mother been a Silver? And if she truly was powerful enough to rule over an entire realm as the fabled Winter Queen… just how incomprehensibly powerful was a System Gold in this universe?

A god that could destroy a world with a singular act of will?

And compared to that power… how could any White Tier class, even an Arch-Mage’s White Tier class, hope to compare?

The eager hawk crowed ruefully, banking its claws and lifting itself from the blazing phoenix of glory he had been so tempted to claim as his own, using his keen perception to spot something far more important than the sweet joy of immediate power.

The final height to which he could eventually ascend.

Just how many classes did he truly resonate with?

What classes worked best with his natural affinity for Fire? The elements of Air and Wood as well, if he chose a cultivator’s path as a Classer… or the additional Essences of Dominion and Wrath, along a pure System Paradigm.

Eric blinked, as countless thousands of birds blinked out of existence, including so many Master Classes, when his mind flared with Silver as a minimum requirement.

He cawed with relief to see Dragon Knight, Vampire Lord, and Archmage still among the phoenixes blazing away, as well as a handful of other master classes far less glorious and distinguished. As to why they resonated with the possibility of Silver ascension one day, at least ofr him, was glaringly obvious for at least a few of them.

The Dragon Knight and Archmage classes both had affinities to Flame, which was a cornerstone of both his Cultivation Elements and Essence Affinities. Also, Fire was the one and only school of magic he had truly been able to access, thanks to deliberately limited opportunity and brutal pressure demanding constant growth and too many years of his life burned free of his soul, just to gain the selection skills, powers, and magical talents that he now enjoyed. Vampires were certainly no fans of flame, but Wrath and Dominion both fit that paradigm quite well.

All of them had the potential to ascend to Deepest Silver, master classes that might earn him even his mother’s respect, if not outright awe.

But none of them promised Gold.

As he saw when he dared to dream of prizes even more vast and glorious as the flock of remaining birds slipped free of the clouds, showing the starry Milky Way far below, as Eric dared to push himself, dared to dream to the very limits of his soul.

Rememberiong in that moment a final glorious boon surrendered as he sacrificed so much potential, an absurd 100 in Strength and Vitality both, for the sake of a world.

Recalling only then the significance and deeper meaning of the very building blocks of that world. Just a handful of runes, perhaps, but their significance, meanings that could shape and define reality itself, had truly become his own.

A gift safely locked away, until it was ready to blossom within him, save for the singular Rune of Fire, which had already shaped the forging of his first eight peripheral nodes. Yet now, that boon promised was ready to blossom just like the world he had forged from the tiny precious seed of a pocket realm he had planted so carefully in the rich loam of endless possibility.

The primal seed of a rune master, needing only a single precious Node slot to grow.

Eric took a deep breath, daring to dream an impossible dream.

At last shying away from Archmage, remembering all too well the specter of his sister’s constant pain, accepting that mastery of a hundred exquisitely refined and defined spells trapped and contained within a bitter frozen matrix, his spiritual flow between channels frozen to crystalline perfection, could never be his path.

As Gold blazed away countless flocks of potential, Eric was almost relieved when former favorites faded to no more, and a bit dismayed by how few options were left. Oblivion’s Disciple and Soul Reaver, Forbidden Classes embracing death and destruction, were powerful choices indeed. Both were able to fit at least a limited application Runic Lore, for purposes of binding, doom bringing, and domination.

For a moment he was chilled by the unexpected glimpse of his own soul. Because what did it say about him that he had met the monstrous requirements in blood and sacrifices that both classes required… even before so many limitations had been brushed aside by his 100% node saturation and countless other accolades? Eric snorted, quickly shaking away his growing melancholy. His enemies efforts to do all they could to destroy him and his family was what had forced him along this dark and bloody path. On their heads alone would be the consequences of their actions. He was but the messenger of their well-deserved doom.

And he was more than eager to deliver it in spades.

Shaking away all lingering doubt and hesitation, he focused on the waning handful choices once more, more determined than ever to rise as high above his enemies, on this world and every other, as he possibly could.

As for the glorious birds of prey symbolizing power he now gazed upon, both of those dark gems were master classes, each with no less than four grand powers to start with that required no node investment at all, and 13 glorious points per level. Either choice would see the land shudder before his might, and both, he was fiercely pleased to see, would lead him not just to a partial breakthrough, but all the way to the glorious peaks of Gold.

Perhaps it showed how naive he was, to dare dream for even a moment of anything grander than becoming a god able to destroy worlds with his will alone, no matter how many centuries or millennia such an evolution might take. Like a child who so easily spoke of a million billion without having any comprehension of the inconceivable multitudes such a vast number actually implied.

Nonetheless, the System forgave him when he dared wonder about whatever lay beyond Gold. Flashes of Platinum, Diamond, Emerald and Sapphires as well, even pristine Obisidian, of such power and potency that galaxies might live and die at the pleasure of beings so powerful that it was utterly beyond comprehension. Truly, to Eric, they were little more than Tiers on a ladder one might spend all of eternity trying to ascend. He supposed he just hated the idea of ever having to stop by any external force save his own whim.

All the birds, of course, had long since faded to bless far more realistic dreamers with their incredible boons.

Save one.

A simple bird with a modest wingspan, humble stats, and a single starting node. Furthermore, instead of the 13 stat points promised every level by other Master Classers, and far more points whispered to a few hidden classes revealed only by Eric’s super-saturated gaze, this one granted only 9 points. And the title was as unassuming as any Master class could hope to be.

Primal Adventurer, the ultimate expression of the most basic of all classes. And even if its Nodes were open to fostering absolutely any power, it was void of the three, even four grand powers nearly every other Master Classer could develop without any node investment at all. Just node slots available for him to fill as he chose, a maximum of one per every ten levels, the same as any Standard Class.

Save for the fact that said prismatic node would synergized perfectly within the crystallized matrices embraced by System Classers, or a cultivators pristine meridian channels, filled with an endless flow of fluid Spiritual Energy. It was a node that would allow any Power, even the gift of Runic Lore, to manifest fully, without any limitation or stricture at all.

And the description of said class, so different from countless other Masterclasses giving exhausted and detailed explanations as to why they were the absolute best choice for any chosen scion of the most powerful factions of the galaxy to embrace, the class Eric peered at so thoughtfully now could be summed up in a single paragraph.

Any path may be chosen. All avenues of knowledge and power are a boon to the humble adventurer! All professions, forbidden arts, and patterns of cycling Spiritual Energy benefit he who would balance his gifts while mastering the tools before him!

Eric wanted to grin at the line. It was as if a substandard class wanted to ingratiate itself by encouraging a jack of all trades approach. As if dabbling in half a dozen arts or schools was an acceptable means of beefing up a naturally weak class.

Before Eric froze, only then realizing what an arrogant fool he was being.

For the bird before him had left golden sunset far behind as it raced across the starry night sky, past even the jeweled milky way, soaring to the endless peaks of possibility as Eric understood at last the significance of the boon he had been given when granting Earth her hidden twin.

A set of runes containing Dominion, Wrath, Fire, Wind, and Wood, among a handful of other words that together would allow him to speak simple sentences capable of shaking the bedrock of his world.

Runes containing all 3 of his essences. Runes honoring all 3 of his elemental affinities.

A Node Power so exquisitely balanced that there was no limit to just how far he could go.

So long as he forever kept his Powers in perfect harmony, he thought, at last letting go of the ached-for glory of Archmage and Dragon Knight, Soul Reaver and Deathlord. To say nothing of countless others that had caught his eyes, embracing instead this common bird that, for the plainness of its feathers, still managed to carry his soul to the outer reaches of the galaxy and beyond.

Best of all, if he understood correctly, neither his Cultivation Path nor his Necromantic Path would suffer for being sheltered under the wings of this bird.

He could only hope that, perhaps, he might be able to use the one without straining the other.

But only time would tell.

Heart in throat, it was all he could do to take the plunge and, he feared, finalize what might turn out to be the most horrific mistake of his life.

Before shaking all such doubts away, and resolutely making his choice.

Congratulations! You have chosen the Class: Primal Adventurer! This class synergizes perfectly with any and all Unorthodox Paths, Cultivation Pathways, or additional Professions you claim!

You earn nine stat points per level.

One node, capable of hosting and advancing any power or talent, is now open to you!

You have chosen to infuse and master Basic Runic Lore! Your limited understanding of runes means you can shape them into basic spells! Your set of runes presently contains only the most rudimentary elements of expression, including symbols from all your Essence and Cultivation affinities!

There is now no limit as to how far you can grow! (So long as you keep your powers in balance!)

Additionally, you may now cultivate freely, without stricture or restraint! Qi Powers might (or might not) synergize perfectly with node abilities chosen!

You may embrace the arts of blood magic and necromancy without restraint! For the power you gain can only help your soul shine that much brighter, bringing ever more abilities and insights into one glorious, unified whole!

Eric took a deep breath, easing his pounding heart, meditating on his choices and praying that he hadn’t just made a dreadful and absolutely irreversible mistake, before an additional ascension pod message caught his attention.

Do you wish to choose a profession now? Professions will further aid your Primal Adventurer primary class!

Professions available to you at present include: EVERYTHING!

All PROFESSIONS ARE OPEN TO YOU!

Eric couldn’t help chuckling at that, though he felt a faint prickle of alarm when he realized that some, no most, threatened his ascension potential, no matter his class messages saying it was a strong fit with everything.

He frowned, taking a closer look at both a Necromancer Profession, in addition or in contrast to a Conjurer style class, and a cultivation profession.

He outright glared at the cultivation professions available.

Because every single one of them promised power, and the effortless formation of peripheral meridians capable of channeling absolutely everything.

And absolutely none of them allowed for the formation of anything like a Bronze, Silver, or Golden Core.

The Necromancer Profession, however, had some very interesting tidbits to consider. Important enough, in fact, for him to risk playing disaster a second time, gambling so much on his tentative understanding of he had just read. He could only pray that it would work out just as described.

Congratulations! You have chosen the Necromancer Profession!

Additional Affinities and Boons detected!

You are a Natural Prodigy! - Your Necromantic Feats include summoning and spirit-binding 5 Spirit Boars at once, manipulating over 20 greater revenants to dominate a battlefield, and soul-binding countless dozens of enemy soldiers to do your bidding!

Multiple Essence affinities detected! Dominion, Wrath, and Flame all have applications in the arts of Conjuration, Abjuration, and Binding!

You have achieved 100% Upper Dantian saturation! You have bested a lich and defeated a necromantic abomination! Standard Necromancer Profession has been Upgraded to Master Necromancer Profession!

Professional Perk every 5 levels has been upgraded to Professional Perk every 2 levels! (Note. You dare an Unorthodox Profession. These perks do NOT take up major nodes!)

Like a light going off in his head, Eric immediately knew which perk he would grab from the get go. Even as he scrolled through countless powerful options, options which might require progressive purchase later, what he cared about above all else was the wasting of endless potential. If he had one concern above all others as a former fantasy gamer and present real life necromancer, it was the thought of summonings stealing his kills. Whether in the form of actual experience or potency, or in the form of skill levels. But if there was a skill, power, or tool, that would allow him to make use of all that potentially lost experience, even if it could only be used to further his own necromantic arts, he would consider that a priceless boon.

He couldn’t help but smile up at the shimmering obsidian orb as big as a crystal ball now floating above his head that only he could see. Perhaps the best gift he could have given himself as a necromancer, all things considered. The fact that he would normally have to wait for multiple perk evolutions to grab this one certainly made this the perfect time to grab it, when he could gain maximum utility from it, even as a level 1 Necromancer.

You have chosen the Perk: Soul Orb! - (All prerequisites bypassed: This is your defining necromancer perk!) This Epic Tier power automatically absorbs the potency of all kills made by all undead that call you master! This stored potency may be stored indefinitely for later use in all Necromantic rituals and bindings!

(Note. Future Perk evolutions include the ability to use Soul Orb potency for all blood rituals and bindings as well!)

He then received a final message that made his grin wider than ever.

Congratulations! You have achieved Level 10 as a Primal Adventurer. You now have 9 character points to spend.

Eric furrowed his brow, carefully considering where to put his points. Of course his physical stats were phenomenal, and there was certainly no shame in focusing on them exclusively, most especially quickness, to balance out the absolutely absurd Strength and Vitality he hoped would be his, in the very near future.

But there were other paths that he could embrace. Perception, for it’s exquisite synergism with Finesse for ranged killing, and even more importantly, for sensing his targets long before they could spot him.

But there was an additional consideration he had only touched upon with past arcane studies. And that was the path of magic, now intuitively sensing the feel of those runes tied to his very being. Magics that required Arcane Potential just as much as they did Spiritual Energy. And with a 148 Spiritual energy being more than 4 times his Arcane Potential, it made sense to invest his points there, to see just how important it was or wasn’t for casting Runes, mastering his fire wand, and perhaps other uses as well.

Eric furrowed his brow, appreciating that Soul Reserves also had a vital role to play in necromancy and blood magic, and most important of all for him, weapon feats. But so far his reserves had been more than fine, even with his anchoring a number of blood bound prizes to his soul. Still, he had the sneaking suspicion that was capable of doing even more, adding a spark to already powerful spells and abilities.

He gave it some thought, deciding at last on 7 for Arcane and 2 for Soul Reserves, doing his best to balance the modified stats. Depending upon how often he did or didn’t make use of wand, runes, or other resources, he’d decide how best to invest his level up points in the future.

DON’T!

A word that sent shivers through his spine, a scream uttered from the depths of his very soul.

Biting back the desperate need of release, tearing free points from paths that could never be regressed, recalling once more his greatest fear.

It was one thing to allow the System to alter his body. His very survival depended upon accepting the burden of that path.

But the one thing he was determined to hold sacred was his mind. Willpower, Scholarship and Charisma were both most definitely reflections of his personality, even if he dared to see Perception as a tool of his senses, and the extreme burst of cognitive speed he enjoyed when Perception, Finesse, and Quickness were within a single multiple of eachother was proof like nothing else of the virtues of stat harmony, allowing for one more edge against his foes.

But if Cognition and Charisma were reflections of whatever housed that ephemeral sense of being known as the soul, what could possibly be more relevant than his Soul Reserves themselves?

“Idiot, why do you hesitate? Everything from Willpower to Arcane Potential have already been boosted like mad!” he hissed to himself. And it was true. But there was a difference. A fundamental difference he was somehow certain of. Whether it was gaining exquisite spiritual enlightenment consuming divine spirit fruit, or the earth’s own blessings infusing his soul as he forged himself into a champion, claiming so many titles in a realm desperate for whatever protectors it could forge, to stat boosts from walking the path of mastery, all of that had some element of natural growth and infusion to it.

And for all that he had gained 9 levels as a Conscript, each of those had been only 1/3 as potent as this level would be, and almost all of that had been spent in boosting his battered physical body, the broken shell housing his soul and will, as best he could.

It was thanks to the massive boons granted by cultivation, spirit fruit and multiple titles that had allowed him to ascend so far, so quickly. Not infusing his soul with quantized potency delivered by a System Eric already understood had been competing for the allegiance, perhaps the very souls, of the powerful for countless Eons.

Even his Adventurer Masterclass, it’s one true strength allowing a harmonious infusion of multiple disciplines, might have been a tactical concession intended to bring the most elite cultivation purists, rune masters, and practitioners of countless unorthodox arts of various power levels into the Cybermancer fold.

Somehow he was sure of it, to the utter depths of his soul.

He took a deep breath, swallowing, for all that he was as much the vision of a bird slowly giving birth to itself, a fiery phoenix reborn in truth, knowing he must channel his 9 stat points, and do so now.

It would be so easy to channel it into his physical attributes: Strength, Vitality, Finesse and Quickness being the cornerstone of the deadliest of warriors, and the armored shell from which he directed his will, while being one very intimate step removed from his soul.

Yet as he had already deduced, an entire mystic art was on the cusp of being revealed to him, one that would simultaneously tap into Spiritual energy and his Arcane Potential. Perhaps one day, his Soul Reserves as well. And with a greater than a 100 point gap, the path before him was clear. He would and should invest his System induced level up points into his lowest Potency Pool. Because even if the System’s power was something he feared changing him, what was magic, his Arcane Potential, but one more tool to express his will, without being his will itself? And if there was one source of power absolutely in tune with the System Interface, it was Arcane Power without a doubt.

Eric took a deep breath, his path now clear, plunging all nine points into his brand new master class… before shrieking as his beautiful golden sunset became the shrieks of a soul in torment, his very mind infected with a presence alien and beyond immense.

The will of a half-sentient cybernetic god.

Twisting him in ways hideous and astonishing in equal measure as his Arcane Potential was ruthlessly ripped open and infused with such potency as to transcend the meaning of the word torment, before being stitched together with eldritch threads of potency, of a Dominion not his own. With a gasp and cry, a suddenly wide-awake Eric stumbled out of his now open pod, heart pounding with terror… unable to deny the crawling sensation of alien tendrils slithering through his mind… before realizing they WERE his mind.

However dark the path he had been forced to walk, however tainted a tiny portion of his soul, he WAS now that transformed version of himself. His Arcane Potential was now nearly 30% higher than it had ever been before.

Still ignoring the bangs and shouts of the glaring pair waiting for him beyond his crystalline ascension center, he let out a sob as he gazed at his character sheet, the odd mixture of joy, wonder, and horror at what he was becoming hitting his gut so hard it was all he could do not to vomit over the insides of his absolutely priceless pod.
