《The Vale》C32

My lips parts when I see the cars in here. How come the twin didn't bring me here? Look at all these cars. The time when we went to save Jessica, I didn't see the car collection.

"Sick, huh?" Nate smirks.

"Who owns this?" I ask.

"The headmaster. He owns everything."

Wow, the headmaster must be fucking rich. He's got a dope mansion and now this. It's like he isn't just an headmaster. How much does he make to be able to afford all this?

I enter the garage after them and ask, "Who's going to drive?" When I find where they keep the keys, I don't have a driver's license and I can't drive for shit.

"I am." Roman volunteers, entering the place.

"Where is Damien?" I ask when I turn around and notice only him.

Roman shrugs. "How should I know where your boy wonder went?" he replies harshly and stops in front of me. "Word of advice, Cami. Stay away from him, he is bad news." He warns and rips the key for the jeep out of my hand.

"And you're what good news?" I fire back which earns me a glare from him. "Who I choose to associate myself with is none of your business. I can take care of myself, Roman."

He chuckles with no humor. "You don't know, Cami. You have no idea what he's capable."

I shrug and answer him. "That's my cross to bare. Are we going or not?" The question sound strange. I should be going with Damien not these guys, I'm not even sure if we're going to find my parents. "Where is he?" I ask when he's about to turn away.

"He just vanished." He shrugs.

I place my hand on my hips and stand still, not making a move to leave. "I'm not leaving unless Damien is coming." That's my ultimatum. Damien offers to help me and I said yes, I won't let him abandon me and let him go back on his words because of something Roman said.

"He's in car," Jessica answers me from the car.

I stretch my neck to confirm Jessica's words. I see his head in the back seat. I sigh and walk to the car, opening the door, I slide in. I sit between Damien and Jessica while Nate sits in front with Roman.

Roman turns on the ignition.

I glance at Damien. He is leaning his head against the seat with his eyes closed. I stare at his hand that is resting on his lap. I debate on whether to touch him. He doesn't like to be touched and I really want to know what happened between him and Roman.

"Damien." I whisper his name, learning closer. "Are you all right?" He doesn't answer but he frowns like my question somehow offended him. I mean, he doesn't look like a guy that scare easily and between the both of them, I think Roman is more scared of him that he is of Roman.

"Excited to go home?" Jessica's questions snaps me out of my thoughts.

I give Damien a last look before turning to face her and nod. "Yes, but I'm afraid something's wrong." I guess it's been established now that I'm going home to check my adopted parents.

I'm nervous to go because I have bad feeling about this and I'm never wrong about these things. My gut is telling me something bad has happened but I choose to ignore it. And choosing to ignore it means there's a chance that my parents are alive and well at home, also ignoring me.

"They are fine," She assures me.

"How would you know?" I ask curiously.

She shrugs and raises her hands to pull her hair in a bun. "If something was up, I would know, it's my job as your sage."

"As my sage huh?" I won't get into that right now. "Tell me about your powers, what can you do?"

If someone asked me that question, I would just tell them that I am not human. I'm a witch on some level giving that I've done magic two to three times. I can destroy things when I'm having a nightmare. Damien called me an empath and telepath but I haven't communicated with anyone telepathically or felt anyone's emotions. His thoughts or memory was the only thing I saw.

"My powers are quite impressive they..." she starts telling us about how cool her powers are and how glad she is to have them but I can't listen. I'm on edge and there's only one on my mind, my parents.

Roman drives out of The Vale and asks for my address, I call it out and rest against my seat. It's a long drive to the west.

****

He parks the car in front of my house and kills the engine. Home Sweet Home.

"Who wants to knock?" He asks.

I roll my eyes. "Damien, Jessica and I are going in," I announce. My parents know Jessica even if they've never approve here and Damien is there for moral support.

Roman scoffs while Nate removes his seatbelt and faces the back. "Wherever Jess goes, I go. So I'm going," he tells me.

I chuckle at his words. "What are you, her bodyguard?"

"Screw you, Cami. And I'm her boyfriend." He says playfully and gives me his middle finger.

Not that I'm surprised, I ask, "when did that happen?" It's a joke and I don't need it right now. "Don't answer that. I haven't seen or talked to my parents in weeks and I want to have some alone time with them. I'm sorry, Nathaniel."

He nods in understanding. "I understand that Jess is your BFF, so I'm not questioning that. What about him?" Raising his chin at Damien.

I turn to my side to look at Damien. His eyes are still closed. I'm not sure if he is asleep or pretending to be. He's just shutting everyone out.

"He is coming." I have made up my mind and am not changing it. I lean into him and freeze when I want to touch his hand. Damien's emotions are the only ones I have been feeling, he allows me into his head whenever I touch him, and I am not sure what I'll see now when I do.

"Damien? Damien, we are here," I raise my voice a little.

"I know," he answers without opening his eyes. "I'm not coming with you," he replies coldly.

I blink my eyes. "Okay, Nate come on," I say without letting it show how much his word hurt me.

Jessica opens the door and steps out. I sigh and follow her, when I step out of the car, Jessica takes my hand in hers, I tilt my head to see her smiling at me.

I smile back. "Let's get this shit over with." I take a deep breath and step onto the porch.

I knock on the door when I get there.

Seconds later, an unfamiliar face opens the door. I blink at the young African American lady standing in front of me. "Hmm... hi?" I greet and look behind her, maybe I'm in the wrong house but it's not possible.

She smiles and returns the gesture. "Who are you?" She asks curiously.

I swallow. "I'm sorry, who are you?"

She nods. "Linda Okoye, who are you?"

I don't know any Linda Okoye or any Okoye for that matter. "I'm Cami Stark, where are my parents?" I demand.

Her eyes widen in recognition but instead of inviting me in, she steps out and closes the door behind her. "You must be related to Corinne and Richard Starling."

Starling? Since when did my parents change their name from Stark to Starling?

"Actually, it's Corinne and Richard Stark," Jessica corrects her.

"If you mean the previous owners of this place, I don't know where they are, but if you don't mind, I have to go back," she says in haste.

"Babe! Who is at the door?" A male voice booms from inside the house.

"They are just leaving," she yells back. "And you are just leaving," she says and is about to open the door when I touch her arm.

I get toss into her head. I see her and a guy shaking my parents hand, thanking them for the house and she called them Starling. I remove my hand from her hand.

She glares at me. "Take your hands off me weird fella," she opens the door and slams it in our faces, leaving me with my mouth agape.

"Okay, that lady is my hero now," Nate jokes.

Jessica nudges his stomach and clears her throat. "What next?"

"What next? My parents fucking abandoned me, sold the house without informing me." The anger that I'm feeling is undescribable.

I step off the porch and walk straight to my neighbors house. I can hear Jessica and Nate yelling my name as they approach me, Damien and Roman are also out of the car. Damien is leaning against the car while Roman is making his way over to me.

I knock on Mrs. Robinson's house, she's an old woman living alone with her nurse. I bang on the door with all of my strength.

"How are we looking?" Roman asks.

How are we looking? Is that even a question?

I roll my eyes and ignore him. The door opens slowly showing Mrs. Robinson's nurse, Allegra.

"Hey! Cool it down, someone-" She stops when she sees me. "Cami?" She says in shock or is it surprise? Who would she be shocked to see me?

"Yes, Allegra, it's me Cami, now please tell me where the hell my parents are?!"

She swallows hard and shakes her head frantically. "No, this can't be real, it's not real. You are not real." She keeps saying.

What the hell is wrong with everyone today?

"Hmm... this lady is real enough, we are here." Nate pokes my head to prove our point.

She shakes her head. "No! It's not possible," she says.

"Allegra, calm down. What's going on?" I try to calm her with my hand almost touching her shoulder but she pushes me away.

"Don't touch me!" She yells.

I almost land on my butt but someone prevents that. "I'm fine. I'm fine." I peel myself off Damien.

Damien pulls me behind him and stands in front of Allegra. "Calm yourself, Allegra and tell me the problem," he commands.

Just like a compulsion she obeys him. "There is no problem, there is just a ghost," she says quietly and trying not to look at me.

"A ghost?" Nate repeats beside me.

Allegra nods. "Yes, Cami, you are dead, I even went to your funeral, your parents couldn't bear to live here without you so they moved." She explains between sobs.

Okay, that is the ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I nod. "Where are they now?" I ask.

"We don't know," she replies.

How can my parents declare me dead when I'm still very much alive?

I still don't know how looking into someone else’s memories works but I will do it.

I push Damien away from my front and stand toe to toe with Allegra. I don't know what I’m thinking except I pull her into a hug and wrap both my hands around her big body.

I look into her mind and see what she's thinking. She stared ahead at the elaborate stainless steel casket with my picture placed beside it. “I’m so sorry for your loss.” She sounded genuine.

I pull away from her and push my friends away. I can't breathe, it's true, she wasn't lying. Everyone thinks I'm dead, everything start coming back. I remember when we went to West High for a game, Xander made a reference to me about being alive.

They think I'm dead. What exactly is going on? Jessica. Jessica must know, she–

I don't get time to think clearly as the sky starts to change, thunder rumbling. The guys are behind me, our head are looking directly up.

Suddenly, five dark figures appear. "Camille Raven Stark, we've been expecting you." The five of them say at the same time.

What the hell?
