《Being Human》33. Political Power

It was night time as Pearl sets down a makeshift device on the sand a small distance away from the beach house and she examines it. "Hmm, this spot should be safe." She comment to herself before she then turns and shouts into the distance. "Amethyst, do you have the robonoid?"
Amethyst appears as she kicks the robonoid over to Pearl as Garnet follows her. "Yeah, don't worry about it."
Pearl looks annoyed. "Amethyst, I just repaired that."
Amethyst steps on the robonoid, as it activates and tries to get up. "Yeah yeah, it's fine."
"Ugh! Okay, we have everything we need for the experiment and Steven is back home having a sleepover with Y/n so the two should be fast asleeeep?!" Pearl looks around and sees both Y/n and Steven suddenly standing in front of her.
"I didn't want him coming alone so late." Y/n says clarifying why he had come with Steven.
"You did the right thing." Garnet says to Y/n.
Steven waves. "Hey guys."
"Steven! It's way past your bed times!" Pearl says as she fiddles with her machine. "You should really go back to the house!"
"I haven't had a bed time, for a long time." Y/n comments.
"What? I don't want to miss... whatever this is. What is this?" Steven asks now.
"Pearl got lonely, so she made herself a robot friend." Amethyst says.
"It's not a robot friend, it's a robot disruptor. It should produce a localized energy blast so when Peridot shows up to... meet with us, we'll have something that can knock out all her robonoids" Pearl explains as she places the robonoid in front of the device. "Now stand back everyone!" Pearl presses a button on a remote control and the device activates. It then emits a powerful EMP blast that knocks the Crystal Gems off their feet and shuts off all electricity in Beach City.
"We did it!" Steven cheers.
The robonoid, seemingly inactive, gets up unaffected. Amethyst moans in disappointment and Garnet face-palms.
"Well, you knocked out all the lights in town." Steven says.
Pearl looks a little embarrassed. "Steven, that was not the point of the..." She sighs. "Alright, that was a start! Now I'm going to need to take some parts out of the washing machine. Steven, you might have to wear the same shirt for a while."
"No problem!" Steven takes off his shirt, to reveal a second similar shirt underneath. The Gems stares at him, speechless.
Y/n looks out to the blacked out town of Beach City now. "Let's just hope they can get the power back up by the morning." He says.
It was morning now and Steven wakes up in the morning in his bedroom. Y/n was on the couch of the Beach house as Steven walks to the refrigerator, half asleep and yawning, and reaches for a pack of "Microwavable Crying Breakfast Friends" in the freezer. He then pops it in the microwave and presses a button to turn it on, but nothing happens.
"What's wrong with the microw.." Steven opens the microwave by accident, hitting himself in the face.
"Ow! Ugh...!" Steven takes the thawed food pack out of the microwave, "What is the meaning of this?!" He cries annoyed.
Loud knocking is suddenly heard at the door and it wakes Y/n up now.
"What's that?" Y/n asks sleepily as he sits up.
Steven looks at the door as he goes to open it.
"Mayor Dewey?" Steven asks surprised to see him.

"Hello there. young Universe. Any of your... sisters home?" Mayor Dewey asks him.
"My sisters?" Steven asks confused.
"Your caretakers! You know....the tall one, the purple one, the hot one." Mayor Dewey elaborates and Steven keeps staring blankly at Mayor Dewey. "Look, the power is out and I've been mayor long enough to know they had something to do with it."
"Oh wow the power is still out? I thought they might have gotten it on by now." Y/n says to himself as he walks to the door now to see what was going on.
Steven was still confused. "My sisters?"
"Is there anyone else I can talk to about this?" Mayor Dewey asks now.
"Pearl!" Steven shouts into the house.
"Coming!" Pearl's voice can be heard.
Mayor Dewey blushes while fixing his collar as Pearl appears at door now with her machine from the last night in hand.
"Oh, can I help you?" She asks as she notices Mayor Dewey now.
"Yes." He says dumbfounded before he comes to senses. "Oh hi!" He clears his throat and acts professionally. "Beach city is currently experiencing a wide spread power outage..."
"Oh, don't worry about that, the power should be back on as early as tonight or as late as... never." Pearl tells him.
"Never coming back?!" Mayor Dewey asks panicked.
"Yes?" Pearl replies.
"No, no, no! It has to come back! The people of Beach City can't handle a situation like this, they need their electronic distractions so they won't know that this town is a magnet for disaster!" Mayor Dewey says now.
"Oh, don't be dramatic. I saw humans get on fine without power for millennia. You used to hunt and gather." Pearl chuckles. "What happened to that?"
"Well we evolved." Y/n answers. "I remember seeing a story about a small island with a tribe that still lives like that though. I think it was near...India?" Y/n says.
"You don't understand. "Mayor Dewey interrupts now. "Sure things seem calm now in the light of day but when the sun goes down, so does the town!"
"He's right." Steven says. "Mayor Dewey, this is our responsibility, we'll help you clean up this mess." Steven says now.
"No we won't!" Garnet says from inside the house and Pearl leaves to walk back into the house.
"Um we'll help you clean up this mess?" Steven says again as he looks up at Y/n unsure now.
"Well it's not like we have anything better to do with the power being out." Y/n says. "But can we stop by my house so I can get a fresh change of clothes?" Y/n asks.
"Alright, You can count on us to help Mayor Dewey!" Steven says now.
"Okay, but you're not getting paid." Mayor Dewey tells them.
Mayor Dewey was driving Y/n and Steven in his van and soon he parks it outside the Big Donut.
"Did your dad ask about the power?" Steven asks Y/n.
"My dad probably won't even notice because all he does now is sleep during the day and fish at night off the shore." Y/n tells Steven.
"All right, we gotta go do damage control now or the boardies are going to get restless." Mayor Dewey says.
"Boardies?" Steven asks as he looks at Y/n confused.
"I think that's his nickname for the people of Beach City. Probably because of the board walk." Y/n explains.
Mayor Dewey gets out of the van now and both Y/n and Steven do the same. Mayor walks up to Sadie and Lars, who were moving some boxes at the back of the building.

"Hello, youth resident of Beach City." Mayor Dewey calls out to them.
"Is everything all right?" Sadie asks.
"You mean besides the power knocking out the freezer?" Lars says as he throws several boxes of melted ice cream near a garbage bin. "Ugh, and melting all this ice cream?"
"What?! Ice cream!?" Steven says shocked.
"It's a real pain in the... "Lars sits on the boxes, accidentally staining his pants in melted ice cream. "Gwahh! Ugh..."
"I'd offer you guys some but its pretty soupy." Sadie says to Y/n and Steven.
"Is this happening to ice cream all over town!?" Steven asks.
"Of course Steven, There's no power to run the freezer's or anything in the town. That's why were here." Y/n reminds him.
"This really is a crisis!" Steven says horrified.
Mayor Dewey quickly places his hand on Steven's shoulder. "Now let's all calm down here, I have everything under control."
"You do?" Steven asks but Y/n crosses his arms over his chest.
"Of course! The power will be back and the freezers will be working by sundown. No need to cry over... frozen milk." Mayor Dewey says as he reaches into his pocket. "Here." He hands Sadie a glow stick and an election button. "I'll catch you kids on the side that flips. You take care now." He says to them as he starts to head towards his van.
Y/n sighs and shakes his head as he follows the Mayor.
"See ya later." Steven waves as he moves to catch up with Y/n.
"Thanks for the glow stick." Sadie calls out kindly.
Mayor Dewey, Y/n and Steven get back inside the van and Mayor Dewey starts up his van.
"...Why did you lie to them?" Y/n asks now.
"You lied to them?!" Steven cries.
"Look Steven and Ehhh...." Mayor Dewey looks at Y/n having forgotten his name.
"Y/n." Y/n frowns.
"Y/n...it's not lying when you're the mayor, it's politics." Mayor Dewey says as he starts driving off.
"It is?" Steven asks.
"Of course it is. Let me tell you something, when you work for the government you can't control what happens in the world but you can control how people feel about. That's the real weight I carry, making the good people of Beach City feel better, safer, more secure."
"Look, I understand that their are some things out of your control but..." Y/n begins.
"What's my other option? Let the people panic and riot? That didn't work out so well for Ocean Town." Mayor Dewey interrupts him.
"I've never head of Ocean Town." Steven says.
"Exactly, that's why you've got to give the people something to believe in." Mayor Dewey says now. "When they see my giant head on this car rolling down the boardwalk, they think "Here comes help!". Well, some people think "Here comes that exterminator guy." But then they realize it's me, their mayor! Have you seen that exterminator truck with a head on it? He's totally copying me."
"Uh..." Steven stammers
Mayor Dewey gives Steven a brown paper bag filled with election buttons and glow sticks. "Here, take these."
Mayor Dewey drives up to the boardwalk in front of the Beach Citywalk Fries, where a large crowd of citizens are chattering among themselves in unrest, and parks his van. Everyone turn to look, as Mayor Dewey steps out of the van with a megaphone.
Mayor Dewey clears throat. "Attention, my good citizens. As you may or may not be aware of, there is a power outage affecting all of Beach City Area proper."
"Oh, really." Nanefua says sarcastically.
"This problem is just a temporary one, not a big one at all. Things could be worse , we could be in Ocean Town." Mayor Dewey jokes now.
Some uneasy glances and hushed laughs ripple through the crowd.
"Too soon!" Mr Fryman calls out jokingly.
"Anyway, the power will be back on by sundown so in the meantime, just enjoy this beautiful, peaceful day outside. The power will be back on before you know it, I promise." Mayor Dewey tells them now.
The crowd murmurs in approval.
"I trust this man!" Nanefua says.
"Okay, make sure everyone gets a button and a glow stick." Mayor Dewey whispers to Steven and the boy moves to hand out the items to the crowd.
"You do understand what's going to happen if they power doesn't come on tonight right?" Y/n asks Mayor Dewey now but the Mayor just turns back to the crowd while waving and grinning nervously.
Steven gives the Pizza family some buttons and glow sticks. "Have a glow stick. Here you go. Uh, here."
Steven walks towards Greg who had been in the crowd. "Oh, hey, schtu-ball. You and Y/n get some sort of secret government internship I need to know about?" Greg jokes.
Steven laughs nervously. "Here." He hands Greg a button and a glow stick.
"Apparently you can't have too many 'Mayor Dewey' buttons." Greg says as he looks at the button. "Sounds like I'm not gonna be needing this glow stick though." He returns the glow stick to Steven. "See ya later, buddy!"
Steven look at Greg walking away dismayed. "But... Dad! Noooo..."
"Do you really think the power will be back on before sundown?" Steven asks Y/n as the two were walking back to the temple.
"I hope so Steven, for Mayor Dewey's sake..." Y/n answers.
The two return back to temple now and they start climbing the stairs, when they overhear the Gems talking on the porch having not noticed them.
"So what if she shows up with more? I say we just mash 'em all!" Amethyst says.
"It's not just the robonoids. According to Lapis, she's going to have backup." Garnet tells her.
"Who knows what she's going to have? We won't stand a chance against their weapons. But, if we can just knock them out..." Pearl ponders.
"It's not about the robonoids, Pearl! She's coming with other gems!" Garnet says urgently and Steven looks shocked at Garnet's statement.
"Says who?! Who cares! What does Lapis even know?!" Amethyst asks.
Y/n starts continuing his climb up the stairs to the porch.
"Calm down, Amethyst!" Garnet tells her.
"You calm downnnnn. " Amethyst starts as she spots Y/n and then Steven who had followed him. "uuhhh, hey!"
Pearl turns and sees Steven too, to her surprise.
Amethyst walks up to both Y/n and Steven now. "Look who it is! Iiiit's Y/n and Steven!" Amethyst laughs and put her arm around Steven's shoulders and Y/n's waist. "Our best friends, What are you doing here, buddies?" Amethyst asks trying to look natural.
"I live here?" Steven answers unsure.
"Is... everything okay?" Y/n asks carefully as he tries to get the gems to talk about the situation.
"Of course." Pearl says nervously.
"In fact, we were just about to play... cards." Garnet suddenly says.
"Yes! Cards." Pearl is quick to jump in with.
"Wanna play War?" Amethyst asks Y/n and Steven but Pearl growls at Amethyst, as a warning. "I mean... Peace?"
"Yeah! But... how are we gonna play cards in the dark?" Steven asks.
"We can light a fire in the fireplace." Garnet answers.
"Yes! Like Early Man." Pearl comments.
Amethyst ruffles Steven's hair. "C'mon, "Early Man."
The Gems enter the house, but Y/n and Steven remain outside. Steven looks through the windows and sees the Gems sitting down and continue to discuss among themselves. He then walks over to the rails of the porch and holds out his 'Mayor Dewey' button at the setting sun. "...When the sun goes down, so does..."
"The town." Y/n finishes as he looks inside at the gems.
Steven looks at the button in worry now. "We need to go Y/n."
It is now night time. Electricity has yet to return to Beach City, as buildings such as the Big Donut, the Ferris wheel and the Funland Arcade remain unlit. The crowd of citizens grows more restless and angry, and begins to protest against Mayor Dewey at the boardwalk.
Y/n and Steven rush in to observe the chaos.
"Oh my gosh!" Steven says in shock.
"I warned him." Y/n says as he looks at the angry crowd.
"How come there's still no power?" Peedee asks angrily.
"You said it would be on by sundown!" Jenny says pointing at the mayor.
Mayor Dewey looks around nervously. "Everyone just calm down. I'm sure if we just talk rationally, we can come to an agreement."
"No agreement! You promised us!"
"Without power, I can't take care of my family!" Mr Fryman tells him before he gestures to Peedee. "Well, this one's fine." He then points to Ronaldo. "But this one can't take care of himself."
"I'm sure the power will be on tomorrow... I think... Maybe." Mayor Dewey says nervously.
"Stop pulling our legs! You lied to us and you are lying again!" Nanefua says.
The crowd roars in agreement.
"Please! Consider things in Beach City..." Mayor Dewey starts but a button hits him in the eye. "Ow!"
The crowd starts to throw Mayor Dewey's buttons and glow sticks at him. Mayor Dewey quickly retreats into his van.
Mayor Dewey lowers the van windows. "If you'd all just calm down..."
"Tip the truck!" Nanefua cries.
Mr. Smiley, Mr. Fryman and Peedee rush forward and begin to push the van, while Buck Dewey helplessly watches. The crowd roars in approval as the van is successfully tipped over.
"Ah what are we gunna do!?" Steven asks Y/n.
Y/n's brow furrows as he climbs on top of the tipped van.
"Hey!" He loudly shouts to the crowd and it is immediately silenced. ""What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"He lied about the power!"
"And so you think this is going to help? Tipping over a cars and rioting?" Y/n says to them.
"The power might not be back on tonight. It might not even be back on for even a week, a month." Steve starts now.
The crowd lets out cries of shock and dismay.
"But I know that you're all going to be okay because you're smart, you're tough, and you're resourceful. And you all care about each other more than you care about stupid microwave dinners or video games or even being able to see in the dark. I know it'll hurt your businesses, I know it'll hurt your lives. But are we really going to hurt those you care about the most over it?" Steven asks the crowd.
The crowd murmurs among themselves as they see his point.
"Of course not!" Steven answers for them. "The night may be be long, But we'll face it together and you'll survive because you the people are the light of Beach City!"
"So get you're acts together and start working on solutions on how we can work around this problem together as a town, instead of trying to tear it down." Y/n tells them now.
The crowd cheers in approval.
Mayor Dewey climbs out of the van now. "Yes! Thank you, Steven and Y/n. I couldn't have said it better."
"Don't try to worm your way out of this!" Nanefua tells him
"Oh! No, no!" Mayor Dewey cowers behind Y/n.
"It's okay! It's okay!" Steven calls out as he climbs onto the truck now. "Mayor Dewey was hiding things from you but he did it because he didn't want you to worry!" Mayor Dewey nods in agreement as he still hides behind Y/n. "He was just sheltering you from the truth because he..." Steven think about the gems and he suddenly realizes as he looks up at Y/n. "They loves us..." He finishes and Y/n nods in agreement.
The crowd nods and whispers in approval, and cheers for Mayor Dewey.
Y/n and Steven hops off the van now as they quickly start to head for the temple.
The two return to Steven's home and can see the Gems lounging around the living room couch, with the fireplace lit up, while Pearl is working on her device from before.
Pearl sees Y/n and Steven. "Oh, hello Y/n, Steven." Pearl says before she looks back at her device and murmurs to herself. "If I could just concentrate the..."
"Um... Do you guys wanna talk?" Steven asks them.
Pearl nervously disconnects a part from her device. "And why would we need to do that?" She asks.
"Hey, Y/n, Steven. You still owe us a game of cards." Amethyst says hoping to change the topic.
Garnet picks up several cards. "Yeah, get in on this."
Y/n picks up Pearl's device from her her hands now as she and the gems all look at him. "We want to talk about Peridot."
"Oh, well, yes. Everything is fine." Pearl says to brush it off.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
