《Buried City》Chapter 56

Right now I am mostly cleaning up and scouting. The number of imps was truly gigantic, there's enough demon dust in my dungeon to make mounts of it. I could just absorb all of that, however it seems the slimes have taken a liking to it, so I’m letting them eat their fill.
There is also the sword from the main demon, it's a pretty simple huge sword. The interesting thing about it is the material, it's called Shadow Ash Obsidian, a special material that regenerates if fed fire, heat or shadow mana. I could make some interesting things out of that, but for now I’m looking around with scouts.
The scouts are mostly flying skulls and some Moon Blight Specters, they are going around known tunnels and seeing if they find anything interesting. They have yet to find anything worthwhile though.
So for now I am creating a few more altars, the test with the demon was pretty good and showed that these things can be pretty crippling to my enemies. Right now I am creating a few undead ones, using multiple materials and seeing which ones are effective and cost efficient.
Outside of that some undead actually got some Levels out of this, which is pretty nice. One of them was Damon, who was a skeleton made of imp dust, he’s looking quite a bit different now. He used to just be a darker colored skeleton, now he has created muscle around his skeleton using heated blood, giving him a bright orange body. His control is pretty good, he even created a forked tongue for himself.
Over his body he has a dark red armor made from imp dust and bone, it is a very spiky armor. To top it all off, he uses the Gnarled Bloodwood Hammer, which has also changed. The hammer has absorbed a lot of imp dust, becoming smaller and denser, its form now looks more like a bunch of gnarled horns than wood.

It was actually quite funny seeing him kill the imps with it, he would just smash them down in a single strike.
The other interesting undead the gained Levels were my gates, they even changed forms a bit. The gates were simple undead that guarded the ramp that goes down into the greenhouse, they haven’t seen much action since…well they are stationary gates. However they have seen enough action, especially after this recent invasion, to have gained some levels.
They have become Skull Gates, literally gates made of bone with a giant skull relief in front of it. I still have to think of something to do with them, and I already have some ideas.
Oh?
One of my specters is seeing something interesting. The walls are shifting, they are moving almost like mud, they are sliding down and slowly a hole opens. From the hole a bunch of single-horned goats come out, their head and horns moving frenetically, causing the stone to move faster.
There are a lot of them, almost a hundred just in front of my specter. I can see more, at the end of the tunnel, they are fighting something. I see white hot fire bisecting a few goats, they fight silently until that flame touches them, then they burst into flames and scream. The tunnel is closed, the goats clearly using magic to close it, leaving behind a few goats to slow down whatever is attacking them.
The goats stare at my specter for a second, then turn and run away, ignoring them. My specter can tell, there are a few goat who have burned bodies, and in those burned areas I can see some type of tracking mark.
I have my specters follow them, and tell them to try and guide the goats towards me. I am also sending a few of the scout skulls. I call a few undead to start making their way towards the goats too, Merlin in specific.
I can see it, the way the goats are moving, the way their horns touch and vibrate. These goats are communicating with each other, they have language.

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.

The Devil's own sins
Writer updates available for free on patreon. The following account, dear reader, is a recollection and retelling of the story of the first imp. The last devil born from the original primordial pit at the dawn of time, and the lowliest speck of that first generation. It recounts the tale of Thozronnath the pitiful and his steady rise from obscurity, perpetually stuck as a punching bag for his betters until the day hell itself spat him out. The information presented here is pieced together from eye-witness reports and second hand hearsay, sometimes from creatures with more than two hands. I can not tell you with any degree of accuracy how much of it is true as it begins long before our time and it's true ending lies far unto the future still. I can tell you one thing though, it was confusing as hell. Cover: Illustration for John Milton's Paradise Lost by Gustave Doré (1866), a thankfully public domain image. Currently on hiatus.
