"Good morning Grandma Kathy!" Chalynn smiled widely as she carried her purse and Starbucks cup into the law firm.

"Now, I done told you and that nigga sister of yours I'm not you're grandma." Kathy peered over her thick rimmed glasses.

"Aw that makes me sad," Chalynn made a fake sad faces and flicked Kathy off, "Old bitch." She mumbled walking passed the front desk.

"Black hussy." Kathy mumbled back loudly causing Chalynn to crack up. "Have a good day." She waved her off.

"Hi pops. How's it going today?" She looked through his office door to see that he was going over a case.

"It's going. I have a famous rapper coming in today on drug charges. I might need you to take the lead on gathering information. I'll let you know when he gets here." Richard smiled taking a sip of his black coffee.

"Anybody I would know? Or is this one of those old timey rappers from your generation?" Chalynn joked sipping her vanilla bean frappe. Even though it had been a week since she had her abortion and she was feeling better some cravings were still there.

It had been a hard secret to keep but telling Ms. Keisha and giving herself to God kept her sane and level headed.

"You might know him. M-," Richard was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing. He held up his finger to signal he'd be right back with her. She signaled back that she would be in her office if he needed her and he replied okay.

Closing his office door she walked over to her own office that was ducked off in the corner. They all had glass doors but they also had curtains so nobody could see in if they were busy or anything like that.

Shutting her door, she put one AirPod in and put her playlist on shuffle.

"Okay Apple. This my shit," Chalynn danced in her in her chair, "Codein cray, wit' the drank in his double cup." She rapped flipping her braids over her shoulder while sticking her tongue out.

She had decided to wear them down with a few strands on each side pulled back into a small rubber band.

Chalynn unlocked her Mac computer and went through all of the emails that were sent to her. She low-key loved this job because of the freedom she had. Even though it was more like an 'internship' she was still getting paid for all her hard work.

Twenty-five dollars an hour to be a 'legal assistant' since she couldn't quite call herself a paralegal was good to her. She worked on average forty hours a week, wether she was in office or not. Her step dad paid her.

Every paycheck she got from him and the radio station where she only made seventeen dollars an hour for twenty to twenty five hours a week went towards her own condo. She couldn't take living with her mother much more. While Richard made it bearable, he didn't stop the abuse. He just gave them money, time and love the next day.

He was also a victim to Flo's abuse. Chalynn wondered why he stayed with her but it was probably the girls.

"I'm in my bag, I'm in my telfy. Dripped down in Prada, shoes is Giuseppe." No longer being able to contain herself, she stood up and danced around her office shaking her ass in the huge mirror she convinced her pops to buy her.

Chalynn loved to dance in the mirror when she first got to work because it helped her become calmer and more confident in her abilities. It got her little jitters out.

"Ms. Jones? I have a flower delivery for you." Richards assistant peeked her head through Chalynn's office door and walked up to her with a bouquet of pink roses. Between a baby blush pink and a darker green those were her two favorite colors.

Her face lit up causing a smile to cover it completely. She absolutely loved being thought about, flowers were definitely apart of her love language.

"These are so pretty! Aw. My man, my man, my man." She smiled happily accepting the flowers into her hands. Lay had been dodging Dorian but her week with him was coming up. While it didn't feel right lying to him but she didn't know how to tell him she killed his child. They had a procedure for everything, especially pregnancy.

"These ain't from Dorian mamí." The assistant smirked at her. Since she was relatively Chalynn's age they gossiped like school girls. She should've known they weren't from him. Dorian was sweet but

"Then who the hell are they from?" She grabbed the tag on the flowers and her heart sped up when she read the note.

In case you thought I wasn't interested.

Xoxo,

KG

"Thank you Esmè." Lay sat down in her chair and pulled out her iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Unknown: They're beautiful.

"I'm glad you liked them." Lay turned around to see Key standing in her doorway.

The look on Chalynn's face was absolutely priceless to Key. The way she looked stunned that he actually pursued her put a chip on his shoulder.

"Like? I-I love them." She pouted putting them down on her desk. Chalynn looked even finer at her day job. "Is it okay if I hug you? Come in, come in!" Key stood in the doorway still but when she welcomed him he moved forward.

"Fasho." Key walked deeper into her office looking around. She shut the curtain over the door and smiled at him shyly.

Key walked over to Chalynn and wrapped his arms around her waist. She followed suit and put her arms around his shoulders nervously.

"Thank you. You don't know how much those flowers have made my day." Chalynn smiled causing Key to smile down at her.

"You ain't text me, so I figured you needed me to show I was genuinely interested." His arms tightened around her waist. Something about Chalynn being in his arms made him feel a magnetized warmth he had never felt before.

The fact that she looked good as hell dressed down and even finer in her day job clothing plus heels was a turn-on for him. He had to contain himself from gripping her ass just as tightly as the beige skirt she had on did.

"This definitely put you on the map but, you should know. I'm seeing somebody. Well, two somebodies. On some polygamy-type shit." She admitted breaking away from the hug before she did something to get herself in trouble even more.

"Oh, word? Like two niggas?" Key was intrigued, he didn't peg her as the type to be in a polyamorous relationship.

"No, I have a girlfriend and a boyfriend. I mean, for now. I'm thinking about leaving. It was cool at first but ever since ... never mind. I'm not telling you this to tell you to wait for me or anything like that. I just wanna keep it real from jump." The two of them sat in her chairs for clients.

Key watched as she crossed her legs very ladylike and nodded his head. The fact that she was taken was almost even more enjoyable for him. The way her face lit up when she saw him in the doorway told him everything he needed to know.

Thinking back about how well their chemistry was when they were on the radio show together gave him slight hope. While she was in a relationship, she didn't seem too happy to be in it.

"You allowed to have friends ain't it?" Key chuckled, he figured she wasn't single. I mean who would let her be?

"Kg you so country it makes no sense. Yes, I can as long as they're respectful." She giggled at how country he sounded when he talked.

"Shit, friends grab lunch. You hungry?" He asked sitting back in his chair and studying her. Lay's smile was infectious, just as it was bright.

"I would love to but how about tomorrow? My dad has me working this case for a big-time rapper... Wait a minute. What are you doing here?" She asked putting her fingers on her chin confused.

"After the lil interview, we got stopped and had weed in the car. Looked up the best Atlanta lawyers. Richard number one. Just so happens, you a paralegal here too. So, I thought why not bring my future lil boo some flowers." He rubbed her knee causing her to blush. "I guess I'll take my mama to lunch while I'm in the city."

"Yeah, my pops' is number one in best defense. Where you thinking about taking her?" Chalynn relaxed in her chair finally signaling he had made her comfortable enough to do that. Key was confused that a very white man like Richard could be her pops but he didn't want to question her.

"ATL breakfast club. She been wanting to go there. You been?" He asked looking over her outfit once again. Accidentally licking his lips before he spoke, "Girl, you fine as a bitch."

"Boy stop it! Comin in here wearing my favorite purse company. You better gone head supporting black business. I'm a regular there. Their breakfast tacos are to die for." Chalynn blushed waving him off.

"I see you have acquainted yourself with our client. " Richard said walking into her office after knocking a few times.

"Yes, he and I are old friends. Right Key?" Key stood up and Lay followed suit.

"Cool cool. Chalynn will be your point of contact and she can reach me. You should know she's very good at her job and will help prep for your court date in the next few weeks. I'm confident we can win this. Chalynn, if you have any questions. You know where to reach me. I'm heading out, nice to meet you Key." Richard smiled and waved at both of them before he made his exit.

"You ever made love in here? While watching your love faces in the mirror?" Key came behind her in the mirror watching as she examined herself. Her eyes widened as she crossed her legs thinking about him taking her on her desk.

"N-no." She shook her head, keeping her eyes closed as he moved his mouth closer to her ear and his pelvis just inches away from her ass.

"That's too bad." Key moved away causing her to suck in a breath and her eyes fluttering open. "I gotta go but how long are you here for?" He asked her smirking.

"Until five. Thank you again for my flowers. Text me when you make it safely and please stay out of trouble." She smiled softly walking him to the door.

"You welcome love. Gotchu. See you soon." He nodded toward her and then left out of her office. Leaving her flustered and ready to risk it all. Chalynn knew what she had to do. Whether she was prepared to do it or not.

She was ready to move on.

"Hey, mama!" Key wrapped his arms around his mom's shoulders and kissed her temple as he sat across from her.

"Hi, son. How are you doing?" She asked him happy to see him in one piece and seemingly joyful.

"Well. Just left my lawyer's office. Don't start, they're stupid ass drug charges." He took a sip of his water watching his mother's mouth drop.

"Who you hire?" She asked sipping her coffee but unlike Richard, she liked hers with sugar and cream.

"Richard and Co. Best in the city. Plus, the girl I did the interview with works there. I fucks wit her." He couldn't contain his smile as he spoke about her.

"Oh, Chalynn? I just saw her too. I was wondering why you smelled familiar. Ya'll weren't getting freaky was you?" Keisha raised her eyebrow at him, she was really hoping she was staying on the straight arrow after what she had admitted to Keisha last week.

"Nah. She different ma. Wait, huh? You just saw her?" Key stopped in his tracks.

"Yes, she is. I've known Chalynn since I first moved to Atlanta. They used to eat at my soup kitchen, now that they've moved out the hood Chalynn is the only one who comes into my soup kitchen to give back to me and the community. She's a good girl, I'm sure she's told you about her relationship right?" Keisha asked, stopping the waiter to get a mimosa.

"Her lil three-way situation? She told me she was trying to get out. She was open bout it but ion know." He shrugged his shoulders.

"Baby. I think it's deeper than that but she doesn't tell me too much about it so I just try to pray for her." She admitted shaking her head back and forth.

"Soon enough she'll be in good hands." Key rubbed his hands together like Birdman.

"Mhm. You figure out that other lil situation before you have my girl caught up in some mess?" She asked.

"We gotta wait till the baby born or some shit cause she doesn't wanna deal with the bloodwork or some stupid shit." He sighed, not wanting to talk about it.

"Mhm! That's right. You don't need any outta wedlock babies. Lay, you could marry." Keisha had a feeling they would be coming together sooner rather than later.

"You right about that."

Key ended up bringing Chalynn those breakfast tacos that she mentioned she liked along with a freshly squeezed beet and orange juice. He was off to a great start of him being her friend.

She went home first and asked Dorian where she could meet him.

Dorian was sweet but she was tired of sharing him with two other women even if she was interested in Emaje.

You got this Lay.

She took a deep breath as she got out of her car and walked into their 'house'. This is where they would meet every time it was their week together. Minus spaghetti night though.

"Dori? I'm here!" Chalynn called out walking into the front door, locking it before she went deeper into the house.

There was no response, only roses and candles that were lit trailing to the bedroom. Biting her thumb nail she internally sighed. There was no way in hell she was sleeping with him tonight, especially since she was a trying to break things off and b still had light bleeding from the abortion.

Following the trail of flowers all the way to the room, she still didn't see Dorian. All she saw were gifts on the bed and light r&b music playing.

"You just had to be his favorite .. huh?" Dylan's eerie voice played in Lays ears. She spun around from the bed to face her. "Dorian won't be attending tonight. He's watching his bastard son." Dylan had smudged eye liner running down her face. She was a pretty woman but she had enough of sharing Dorian.

"W-what are you doing here?" Chalynn asked backing up deeper into the bed. She hadn't noticed Dylan had a knife in her hand. "Dorian will kill you if you touch me." She tried to warn but she knew Dylan was passed giving a fuck about anything sane.

"Which is why he won't know. He'll think it's that lil lesbian fucker he got pregnant." An evil grin spread across her face as she inched closer.

"If you think I'm going out with out a fight you got life fucked up. I been waiting to beat yo ass." Chalynn pressed a button on her phone to call the last person she spoke to so they would hear everything.

Lay held her dukes up, while she fucked Dorian at the gym he also taught her basic self defense and boxing strategies. She swung first trying to knock the knife out of her hand but it didn't work. Instead, Dylan used it to slice Lay across her face.

"Stupid bitch." Chalynn tackled Dylan, delivering blow after blow to her face. If she wanted to mess up hers, she was going to destroy Dylans. But, Dylan was still smiling causing Lay to look at her in confusion.

"I'm sorry." The voice behind her said, as two gun shots rippled through Lay's body.

Her whole world went dark.
