Runway 2.22 - That time I was reincarnated in another world and came to a decision about my harem
I fled from the cafeteria, immediately making my way to the nearest common room. My movements were precise and efficient, guided by the depth of knowledge only achievable by one who has spent over an hour running aimlessly through the building earlier this morning. I slid in discreetly to check the room, quietly kicking the door off its hinges as I entered.
The room looked pretty comfy, sending a surge of jealousy through me. There were a few heavily-cushioned couches against the walls, a pool table, a ceremonial pit for mud and/or oil wrestling, plenty of shelves of books and board games, and even a small stage with a Karaoke Golem reading a magazine in the corner. Two paladins playing foosball glanced up at me, alert enough to have noticed my stealthy entrance.
I quickly dodgerolled behind the ice cream bar. I didn't want to make a fuss until I had a plan formulated! I couldn't afford to be spotted here. I activated [Periscope Vision] and surveyed the various ladies in the room. I had to figure out the hottest one, and then...
"What are you doing?" a voice asked from behind me.
Startled, I whirled around, ready to activate one or more of my extremely powerful skills in prevenge against what was surely an ambush. However, when I turned I was surprised to find that it was 3 or 4 lady [Paladins] rather than an enemy. I immediately cancelled my [Dragon Breath] and my casting of [Explosion - Lvl 10]. I looked up at the girls and realized that they had asked me a question.
"Oh... y'know," I replied coolly, hoping that they didn't actually know what I was doing, and instead were assuming it was something much cooler and/or smarter than hiding behind a table and staring at girls.
"Hey, choutto..." the leader of the girls said. "You're that [Legendary Hero] guy, aren't you?"
"Yeah, that's me!" I said, puffing out my chest by activating my [Chest Puff Basics] skill, which I'd just learned instantly using [Instantly Learn Skill]. I was the [Legendary Hero] after all, so I couldn't think of any potential situation in which I wouldn't want to instantly answer in the affirmative.
"Huh, is that so?" she asked, crossing her arms and looking me over.

I gave her an ocular patdown in return. She was wearing a conservative platemail breastplate, complete with all kinds of armor on her arms, and a metal skirt or something. A sword hung at her waist. I wasn't sure what type it was, but considering it looked like a real piece of shit, it was probably a bastard sword. She had fiery red hair that went down to her waist, and fierce green eyes that matched the gemstone in the enchanted torc on her forehead. She had a slim and busty build, with a butt tight enough to throw a coin at, as I'm pretty sure the saying goes.
"Hey, hey..." one of her friends whispered, a pale girl with green hair and sleepy eyes. "Mother Hagatha was saying that he's going to pick somebody to join his [Party], right?
She leaned in towards the other two, opening her eyes so that she could narrow them, grinning what was probably a friendly grin.
"A chance to be in the [Legendary Hero]'s party. You know what that means, right?"
A (figurative) light glinted in her eyes, and the leader seemed to catch her meaning, her eyes widening. The third friend seemed to understand as well, and seemed to fret in response. She was a factory-model blue-haired shy anime girl. That's literally all the description anybody needs, you know the type.
They seemed to be conspiring and whispering among each other, so I just nodded and made some whispering noises too, so that they wouldn't suspect that I had no clue what was going on. Did they want my autograph or something? I glanced behind me and realized that they might have just been trying to get to the ice cream bar. I took a few steps to the side just to make sure, but was surprised when they stopped whispering and approached me again!
"Hey, hey..." the green-haired girl said, as the red-haired leader crossed her arms and pursed out her lips. "You would be making a great decision if you picked one of us to go with you."
I gasped internally and externally. They actually WANTED to come with me? I-I mean, of course they wanted to come with me! I looked at the leader, who was firmly crossing her arms and turning her head away from me. She looked... less enthusiastic than the others, but maybe it was just my imagination.
Hmm... I wonder if she might be a good fit. I appraised her using my [Appraisal (but secretly infinite knowledge)] skill!

Ugh! This information was basically useless! For an [Appraisal] skill, it was a real dud. All it shows me is every relevant stat and skill related to their combat ability and relative strength?! Isn't this thing supposed to be infinite knowledge or something? Why the heck is it only giving me this pointless trivia. I'd have to do something about it...
Wait. That's it! It might be infinite knowledge, but of course it wouldn't display everything at once! After all, if you were to take every single piece of information about a person, years and years of accumulated memory, history, traits, personality, interests, hobbies, flaws, weaknesses, strengths, System information, relationships, metrics, CSAT scores, secrets, dance moves, favorite movies, recipes known, affinity scores, minigame records, and DNA profile, and shove it all into the mind of an average non-me person, it'd be a disaster! They'd take way too long to read it!

I quickly opened the maintenance hatch on my [Appraisal (but secretly infinite knowledge)] skill and flipped a few toggles. With my dazzling intellect, I could reroute the survey breakers and reverse the polarity of the analysis to get only the most pertinent information! I hit it with a hammer a few times to reload the cache dampeners, then closed the hatch.
After my tweaks, I went ahead and appraised her again, with my new parameters!

(Appraisal-Generated Depiction) (Not to Scale) Name Erika Tora Level 5 Personality: Tsundere Blood Type: A+ Zodiac Sign: Swordfish Height: 5'5" Bust: 34 E Waist: 25 Hips: 34 Likes: Sweets, Swordfighting, Money, N-not You, Baka! Dislikes: Pathetic Guys, Broccoli, Not You Finishing Move: Triple Baka Rising Uppercut
That's more like it! I was glad to finally have something that I could really call a 'cheat skill'! This took all of the guesswork out of it, didn't it? Still, a tsundere, huh? (TL note: tsundere means "It's not like I like you or anything, baka!) (TL TL Note: Baka means fool)
I rubbed my chin, musing on it. Tsundere girls were pretty classic, but it seemed like they weren't exactly rare in this world. As a matter of fact, most of the girls I've met seemed like tsunderes! They pretended like they wanted nothing to do with me.
What about the others? I appraised the other two [Paladins] as well!

(Appraisal-Generated Depiction) (Not to Scale) Name Susannah Minks Level 4 Personality: Social Climber Blood Type: A+ Zodiac Sign: Crow Height: 5'2" Bust: 34 E Waist: 23 Hips: 32 Likes: Money, Power, Hot Guys, Fine Dining Dislikes: Clingy Guys, Cheapskates, Fizzy Drinks Finishing Move: Critical Strike
Huh... She seemed pretty cute! It looked like she was a fan of both money and power, which was fortunate, because those were two of my best traits! It seemed like she was pretty athletic too. I'm pretty sure I saw something about climbing in her Appraisal status as well.
But it was a lot less about what I could offer her, and way more about what she could offer me, after all! Finally, I appraised the last one!
♥ LOVE LOVE APPRAISAL ♥
(Appraisal-Generated Depiction) (Not to Scale) Name Kimiko Suzumiya Level 4 Personality: Shrinking Violet Blood Type: O- Zodiac Sign: Mantis Height: 5'6" Bust: 34 E Waist: 26 Hips: 36 Likes: Cute things, Reliable Guys, Strawberries, Hardcore BDSM Dislikes: Showoffs, Bugs, Spicy Foods Finishing Move: Steel Dirge: Song of Punishment
Well, she was certainly cute! I didn't really bother reading most of her stats besides the physical ones, because once you'd seen one shy blue-haired anime girl, you'd seen them all. Still, she at least seemed quiet, which was good, because it gave me more opportunities for cool one-liners.
I grinned a smile. I couldn't get over the fact that one of my skills had actually come in useful for a change! When I'd been reincarnated without a cheat skill, I'd been a bit concerned, to say the least. But now, I was starting to come to a realization: any skill could be overpowered if you used your brain when you used it!
Still, this was going to be a tougher than I thought... All three of these hot anime babes... Had the exact same size breasts! How was I supposed to decide who to pick?!
"W-well, picking me would be the best option," Erika (the red-head) said, blushing slightly and looking away. "I-if you want me to come so bad, then I guess I can help you out."
"Hero-sama~ You're so... manly. You'll let me come with you, won't you?" Susannah asked, leaning towards me and pressing her chest against my arm, which would have been more effective if she wasn't wearing metal armor. It was still extremely effective though, causing me to apologize for no reason and flail backwards several feet before recovering instantly.
"U-u-um! P-pick me!" Kimiko asked, before blushing and twisting her index fingers together. "U-um, if that's okay..."
I rubbed the back of my head, sighing. The girls were all coming after me pretty hardcore, begging me to take them along in a way that would have been really pathetic if they weren't totally hot.
Jeez, this situation! I couldn't bring all of them, since my [Harem Matrix] was capped at one (1) girl for this arc! I was a little bummed out about that, but glad that I was completely aware of how my [Harem Matrix] worked and thus didn't need to explain it to anybody, even in my own internal thoughts.
Considering how strong I was, any of them would contribute about as much help in a fight as a puppy with two peg-legs, so the main thing I was looking for was how hot they were. My [Appraisal] could only give me information! It couldn't use metrics to calculate which of these hot girls was the best option, unless I reconfigured it again, which I didn't want to.
Some way to decide... Of course! That was it!
"W-well now!" I said, "I can't just pick one of you, because it's too difficult, and if I think too hard I might collapse. It's a medical condition."
The girls looked upset, to say the least. They also looked concerned and openly ambitious, to say more. Susannah shook her head, offering an alternative solution.
"Just pick all of us! More people is better, right?"
"I refuse."
"Ehhhhhh?" Erika ehhhhed, putting her hands on her hips. "Why not?!"
I pretended not to hear her, giving a warm smile to Kimiko, who was trying to hide behind her katana, peeking gently out at me. I wasn't sure if she was just trying to be cute or if she genuinely had brain problems, but in either case, I considered it a charm point.
"The only solution is to have a big, over-the-top competition in order to decide who gets to be part of my harem!"
Erika frowned, crossing her arms again and looking at me suspiciously. "Eh? What's that? You meant [Party], right?"
"I don't mind," Susannah replied, smiling.
"A... a c-competition?" Kimiko asked meekly. "Does that mean a, um... a t-t-t-"
At her stuttering, some other random [Paladin] who only existed for long enough to deliver this single line burst into the conversation.
"Are you holding a Tournament?!" she demanded, battle-frenzy shining in her eyes.
I shook my head, ending her interaction with me and thus consigning her to oblivion.
"No," I explained, "the Tournament Arc will have to come later." I'd already wasted too much time just hanging around this Paladin order and doing random things. I wanted to make sure some actual plot happened in this volume as well. A tournament wasn't a proper tournament unless it basically took up an entire god damn volume by itself. Preferably more than one!
"Instead..." I explained, turning and flashing a grin to the three eager girls, "It'll be a Beauty Pageant!"
