《Infected [killugon/killuaxgon]》Starting Over

Killua rushed upstairs and I knew better than to follow after. He and leorio deserved some space to talk together. But this leads to the inevitable.
"Can we talk, gon? I know that neither you nor Mito deserves what I did. Can I explain?" Ging genuinely sounded as if he had many regrets. "Yeah. I'm sorry for not hearing you out at first. But it better be good, considering you left your family for this." I responded, sitting against the wall below the stairs. He sat in front of me on the ground and cleared his voice. "It's a bit of a long story, you sure you are ready to hear everything?" Ging leaned back and used his arms as support behind him as if he already knew the answer.
"I'll listen to anything you have to say, as long as it's reasonable."
He took a moment, rubbing his chin in thought. "Oh yes, that's where it began."
---
Ging's hand gripped the phone, desperately wanting to hang up. Mito had her shoulder leaned against the wall on the other side of the room, watching as Ging sighed heavily and angrily accepted whatever the person on the other side of the phone was offering. He took the phone away from his ear, and placed it back into its holder, automatically ending the call. He faced Mito with an upset face, and moved towards the dining table, sitting down. Mito pulled the seat in front of him and sat, not saying anything. "Mito, they want me to go over to the facility. For a few weeks at the least. It's almost an eight-hour drive. I couldn't decline, it's a very important cause. Declining meant risking my job." He explained, and Mito placed a hand over his with a sad smile. "Slow down, Ging. Just, call us every now and then. When will you be leaving?"
Ging grinned and turned his head towards his eleven-year-old son sat at the coffee table in the sitting room, eyes fixated on the words inside his 'Alice in Wonderland' story. "Tomorrow, so I can get this over with. I'll call as often as possible, I promise." Smiling, he stood from the table and walked towards Gon, sitting on the couch just behind him. Gon noticed this and placed the book down on the table, turning towards his father with a large smile. "Hey, buddy. I need to talk to you quickly." Gon's smile faded slightly, however, he put his full attention towards his father.

"I have to go for a couple of weeks to my work tomorrow early in the morning. Can you watch your aunt Mito for me while I'm gone?" Ging pat Gon's back as he eagerly nodded his head. "I'll do my best, dad."

Ging's ride to work was nothing out of the ordinary. It was long and traffic was heavy, but he made it in time regardless. His car pulled up to the security gates and the officer asked for identification before opening the gate and letting him inside.
Ging parked his car and walked into the building as slow as possible. The boss stood close to the entrance desk, causing Ging to swallow nervously. "Mr. Freecss, you are right on time." The man began walking and motioned for Ging to follow. Once they were in a closed-off area, the boss began talking again. "We have begun the creation of a very strong... Drug, we believe will change this world forever. Or rather humanity. This project does require someone of your skill in the laboratory, which is why you were called in." The boss stopped walking and crossed his arms in front of his chest, turning to face Ging. "Because of its importance, we will need you to stay until it is complete, and perfected." Ging's face fell as he registered what the man was telling him.
"But sir, that could take years! What exactly does this drug do?" He questioned with the slightest bit of suspicion. The man's face hardened and his brows furred. "The drug is supposed to be used somewhat as a steroid and will change the mindset and appearance of whoever is injected. There could be superhumans out there because of this, far stronger than normal humans! This could be the next big thing!" The man exclaimed, sounding overjoyed. "But sir, that sounds extremely dangerous and difficult to make-" Ging started, however, the man grunted and spoke over him. "I did not call you over here just for you to decline. I know this job is the only way you keep food on your family's table. Now will I have to fire you, or will you cooperate?"
Ging called Gon and Mito whenever possible, and sent them money every week. Up until the boss grew angry with their work so far, and worked them until exhaustion. It wasn't very often Ging could call anymore, nor could he send the money as often. This went on until Ging had to put every ounce of his focus into this project. At this pace, it would be finished in a couple more years. At that time now, Ging could have been gone for more than a few years. It was all the same schedule, boring, nothing new.

This was up until a few years later when they finally started bringing in real humans to test the drug on. Of course, these people have signed a contract and were accepting of any outcome. We kept each patient up until they showed signs. The first person showed no sign of change, except for a few days later their skin began peeling off creating agonizingly painful scabs. It became so bad, the person practically begged to be killed. The second person's skin grew a bruised color, and they lost so much weight their bones started showing from the outside. This person also showed signs of a mental change.
The third person was a small boy. I couldn't believe we would possibly accept a kid experiencing such a thing. I couldn't watch the whole month as he showed similar symptoms to the second patient, however, he often screamed from inside the padded room we provided. His hair fell out in clumps, and his skin became very weak. A gentle punch to the arm would create a wound and he would bleed out a dark purple. He was covered in bandages and curled up in a corner when he died.
We waited a while more before moving to our fourth patient. It's been about 6 years since Ging left Mito and his 11-year-old son.
The fourth person was a female, 28 years old and energetic. The day after the dose was given to the patient, all the symptoms showed. This was much faster than the other patients. Some new symptoms showed were excessive drooling, bloodshot eyes, black fingernails, vomiting blood, almost black blood, wrinkles, and many more. On the third day, she was laying on the floor as if dead. This made the people watching curious. If she had died so soon, there was something wrong.
A new scientist in training stepped into the room holding a syringe, kneeling next to the body and taking its arm, sticking the syringe inside, and injecting the liquid. The body jerked and pulled the young scientist close, biting deep into the boy's shoulder and licking the wound. He pushed the body away, stumbling back, and let out a sob. He left the room and got patched up. The girl died that night. Around the same time, the boy began showing symptoms. The scientists found that very fascinating, and ran tests on the boy as well as the woman's corpse.
The same thing that happened to the boy happened to another assistant, the bite and symptoms. This continued until there was a large room with just drugged people. The boss was ordering people to take the lives of most of the people, however, there was no safe way to get to them without being bitten.
It didn't take long for the group of people to break down the door and invade the halls, taking the lives of those who weren't strong enough. One of those people being the boss, who sat in his office on the phone while many of them hurried towards his room. He was cornered and killed soon after.
Ging and the other surviving scientists evacuated the building and entered the building just beside it. They reported this to the government who sent whoever possible, but it was too late, for some of the infected escaped the gates and wandered to who knows where. This spread the virus further, thus creating an outbreak over the span of a month or two. Ging swore he would find a cure, no matter the cost.
----
"So while you were getting older, I was creating the virus we are surviving today. Me and the others will create a cure, and I want you there when we do it."
