《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 198: Something Memorable

Tomorrow was moving day. And as excited as I was, I couldn't deny that I was nervous. What if I wasn't good enough?

But I had to be.

I had gotten in, right?

That had to mean something.

They didn't just accept anyone.

"You know, if you don't feel okay-"

"Jaime, I'm not missing moving you in. This is a big day for you, and I've looked forward to this day for a long time." Mom said, flashing me a tired smile. I nodded, wanting nothing more than for her to be there for me.

"Okay."

"Is Josh coming over tonight?" She asked. My cheeks burned, smirking back at her.

"I'll ask, but I'm sure he's still got some last minute packing to do." She shook her head, giggling to herself.

"I'm sure he's been done. He's always been over-prepared." I nodded. She was right. Most of this time was spent getting me ready, making me worry even more about how I would be able to keep up with everything, meanwhile I'm sure he would fit right in.

I grabbed my phone, going down the hall and into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me before pressing call. It didn't take long for him to answer.

"Hello Jaime." Josh sang. My heart jumped, hearing the smile in his voice.

"Hi." I giggled. "What are you doing right now?"

"That's so funny you ask.." He said, his voice trailing off. I could feel my heart beating faster.

"And why's that?"

"Because.. I was wondering, considering it's our last night here, if I could take you out."

"Of course you can take me out." I said. "Where did you want to go?"

"Well, I've.. I've got something for you, and.. well-"

"Wherever you want to go is okay with me." I said, noticing him starting to stutter again, something he always did when he got nervous.

What could he possibly be nervous about?

"Okay." He sighed. "So, when do you think you'll be ready?"

"Should I.. wear anything.. specific?" I asked. He was quiet for a moment.

"Something nice." He finally said. "Something memorable." My heart jumped.

Something memorable?

"O-okay. And I'll.. I'll come by once I'm ready and-"

"No, no.. just.. just text me and I'll come get you."

What was going on with him?

"Whatever you say." I laughed, knowing better than to question him on anything. He's always had the best surprises so I knew it was just best to do what he wanted.

"I love you, Jaime."

"I love you, I'll see you later."

"Okay." He said, knowing that I had to be the first one to hang up.

I went back down the hall, peeking my head into my Mom's doorway.

"Hey, so.. Josh wanted to take me out tonight, considering it's our last night here, so.. I'm gonna be home a little later." I said. She nodded, smirking back at me.

"Okay." She said simply. I don't know what it was, but something just felt off. Did she already know? How could she know?

I shook the thought, knowing I was just overthinking things. My nerves were just taking over, but at least I'd get to spend the night with him. That always made me feel better.

"Are you gonna be okay?" I asked. She nodded.

"I'll be fine." She said simply, her smile growing. "Enjoy your night. And.. if you want, come and tell me all about it when you get home." I nodded, biting down on my lip, secretly hoping that for our last night here, him and I could spend it together, but we'd have plenty of nights together at school, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if we had to spend one night apart.

"Do you.. know where you're going?" She asked. I shook my head, feeling my face get hot.

"Do you?" I joked, feeling like everyone was now in on something that I wasn't. She shook her head, playfully looking away.

"No, no.. just wondering. Okay, well.. have a great night." I nodded, holding my stare on her for a moment before going back down the hall and into my room to get dressed.

Something memorable.

What did he mean by something memorable? He knew that I really didn't have anything dressy to wear. The nicest thing I could think of was the dress I had worn to the wedding, but.. that was filled with different memories that I didn't want to bring with me anymore, not with him anyway. I wanted something special. Tomorrow was the first day of the rest of our lives, and I wanted to remember every detail of it.

Flipping through my closet, all the way in the back I eventually found a simple, white, floor length dress, with spaghetti straps; it was one of my summer dresses, way too cold for this time of year, so I paired it with a long sleeved turtle neck underneath and some warm boots. Spinning around in the mirror, I couldn't help but smile, actually surprised at how well it worked together.

Maybe I would be okay in New York after all.

The longer I took to get ready, the more nervous I felt, wondering why everything felt.. different, like I was out of a loop that everyone else was in on, but that only made me want to make sure I was that much more put together, because if tonight was going to be special, I wanted to make sure I looked and felt my best.

Finally I spun around in the mirror and for a moment I felt complete calm, like I was really ready. Not just for tonight, but for everything. For tomorrow, and for the rest of our lives.

I'm ready be right over

I quickly made my way back down the hall, peeking my head back into her room.

"Okay, he's on his way over." I said. She nodded, holding her stare on me for a moment, flashing me a wide grin.

"What?" I asked, nervously giggling to myself. She shook her head, motioning for me to come over.

"Nothing." She sighed, pulling me into a tight hug. I held on tight, not wanting to let go of her first as I felt her rub my back. "You look absolutely beautiful."

"Thanks, Mom." I muttered.

"I hope you have the best night."

"It's probably just dinner, nothing crazy." I laughed. She nodded, staying quiet again.

"Well.. whatever it is.. I hope it's amazing."

"Okay, Mom." I laughed, loving how dramatic she could be sometimes but even still.. I always appreciated it.

As I made my way downstairs, I could already hear him knocking on the door. I hesitated for a moment, taking a deep breath and fixing my hair one last time before opening the door, unable to contain my beaming grin when I saw him standing there with a bouquet of red and white roses.

"Josh.." I sighed as he handed them over to me. His eyes instantly lit up as he looked me up and down, biting down on his lip to try to contain his smile.

"You are.. so beautiful." He whispered. I felt my cheeks burn, ducking behind the roses to hide my blushing my face.

"Thank you." I muttered. He held his stare on me for a moment before leaning in, gently kissing my cheek.

"You ready to go?" He asked, reaching out and taking my hand. I nodded, feeling my heart start to beat faster, somehow knowing that.. tonight wasn't going to be like any other date.

"Mhm.." I said, intertwining our fingers as I followed him out to his car. He guided us down the lawn and everything started to feel like it was happening in slow motioning, now feeling myself memorizing every moment as it happened, knowing that one day I'd want to remember every second of tonight.

He opened the door, helping me inside and carefully shutting he door behind me before making his way around and hopping into the driver's seat. After getting situated, he reached back over for my hand, tightly intertwining our fingers again before looking over at me, flashing me a nervous grin.

"Ready?" He asked. I nodded, having no idea what was in store, but knowing that whatever it was..

I was ready.
