《How I Became A Jarl》Farewell, My Lord pt. 1

One day has passed since the hunt with old man Whak and since the great show of strength provided by Astvar. I was going to check on him and ask about this house I wanted to build. His home was a lot more quiet than usual. Usually, the doors to Astvar’s room are always closed but this time they were wide open. In the room, Astvar was lying in bed taken care of by the same waitress from the inn that I helped once.

[ Waitress ]

“Oh! Good day hero!”

[ Eric ]

“Good… day… umm… What are you doing here?”

[ Astvar ]

“She is just helping this old frail man.”

[ Eric ]

“How are you feeling? I saw you doing this amazing trick yesterday.”

[ Astvar ]

“Could you leave us for a moment?”

The waitress left the room and closed the door behind her.

[ Astvar ]

“I heard that the plan to tame the wolves is going well. Hakon told me earlier.”

[ Eric ]

“Yeah. Few of the wolves listen to commands.”

[ Astvar ]

“Good.”

[ Eric ]

“Would you like to tell me about that spear of yours?”

[ Astvar ]

“Well. That wasn’t a spear…”

[ Eric ]

“But it looked like one.”

[ Astvar ]

“Maybe… But calling this a spear would be a disgrace toward Odin.”

[ Eric ]

“So that was a spell granted by Odin?”

[ Astvar ]

“Spell was to bring a shard here…”

[ Eric ]

“So this… shard wasn’t a spell?”

[ Astvar ]

“No. The spell was summoning the shard from the realm of gods. It was a shard of Odin's spear, Gungnir.”

[ Eric ]

“Did the summoning of this shard exhaust you that much?”

[ Astvar ]

“No. It wasn’t the summoning but using god’s weapon. We can use only a shard of god’s weapon for two reasons. First, because we are not worthy of using its full power and second, we are not strong enough to handle them. If we used more than we can handle we could… die. But I’m not ding! I’m just really exhausted and I’ll be like that for a few days.”

[ Eric ]

“Good to hear that… Didn’t know about things like that… But then how did you get your title? I thought it might be related to that shard but it was… blue… or silver.”

[ Astvar ]

“It is related to the shard. In one important battle, I pulled out a golden shard the strongest that I could ever bear in my hands…”

Astvar told me part of the story of his title but I could see that it’s a topic that he rather not talk about. Yet again he shows me that he isn’t just a normal old jarl.

[ Eric ]

“If you don’t mind I came with one request for you.”

[ Astvar ]

“What is it?”

[ Eric ]

“The hut you gave me was good for my first home in this world but I’d like something better. Can I build a bit bigger building next to the hut?”

[ Astvar ]

“Ah… Something as simple as that? Sure. Build whatever you desire!”

[ Eric ]

“Really? Thank you! I’ll try to not build something so great as your home.”

I left his room immediately. I was so hyped to create my own house. I can plan it however I like because this time the administration won’t be able to stop me! After I left the waitress went into the room again.

[ Waitress ]

“Why did you lie to him?”

[ Astvar ]

“I didn’t lie… I just didn’t tell him about one thing.”

[ Waitress ]

“You didn’t tell him that you might die because of that power.”

[ Astvar ]

“I might. There is a chance that I’ll die and there is a chance that I’ll be fine.”

[ Waitress ]

“Then why am I the only one you told this about? Even your son doesn’t know…”

[ Astvar ]

“If I die I don’t want you to think that this was your fault and I don’t want to warry Hakon at times like this.”

[ Waitress ]

“I understand. I won’t tell anyone about this.”

At full speed, I sprinted to the hut and like usual just barged in screaming “TAE!” I think he got used to that because this time I didn’t surprise him, he didn’t flinch and even took a deep breath before responding to me.

[ Tae ]

“What is it this time?”

[ Eric ]

“We're going to chop trees!”

[ Tae ]

“Why would I do that.”

[ Eric ]

“We need to train for monsters to attack and we can sell the wood.”

I’ll use most of the wood to build my house. If there will be more than needed I’ll sell it or use it for fire… Tae doesn’t need to know that for now. Somehow I managed to make him go with me and chop the wood. For the most of time, I was cutting down trees and Tae was caring wood to our hut.

I was exhausted but not as exhausted as after training with Riglids at Sehus. I can already feel muscle sores coming the next day. I guess this is one of the downsides of living in a world like that. Come to think of it I didn’t speak with Loki for a week. He usually likes to make fun of me in my dreams but maybe he got bored.
