She threw on her big floppy hat and sunglasses, and then Emily didn't stop walking until she was outside of Bountiful Sun Yoga and safely at her car. When she'd unlocked the door and had slid into the passenger seat, she came to her senses enough to realize she was gulping for air.

It's okay, she told herself. Just get it together and drive.

Emily peered out the windshield, checking to see if anyone had followed her outside. The sidewalk in front of the yoga center was empty. She'd had a head start, but if Raine had been behind her, he would have made it to the doors by now.

He hadn't gone after her. She didn't know whether to be relieved about having the chance to collect herself, or devastated about what that could mean.

Go now. The thought bounced through her mind at the volume of a scream.

She willed herself to put the key in the ignition. A warning bell went off somewhere in her brain as she put together the scene inside with all she couldn't see out here. Cory was in class with Kami, and there was no telling how many paparazzi had been tipped off to that. For all she knew, there was an entire TV entertainment show crew staked out in the shiny Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van parked across the street. She needed to get out of here fast or risk being recognized. The thought of someone seeing her upset and linking it to Cory and Kami in a story or a headline made her stomach churn.

Emily buckled her seat belt and started the car. Just before she shifted out of park, she heard her phone's text alert.

Deal with it later, she commanded herself. Drive away. She checked her rearview mirror.

Her heart didn't listen to what her head told it to do. Emily kept the car in park and reached into her bag instead. She pulled out her phone and read the message on the screen.

Class is starting. Can't leave with Olivia here. Can I come by later?

Olivia. So that was her name.

She read Raine's message again, this time trying to understand what it really meant. If he wanted to talk to her but couldn't leave now because he had Olivia with him in class, then Olivia was clearly important to him and he didn't want to leave her there on her own. Or maybe they'd driven to class together. Or both. She didn't want to think about the possibility that Olivia had spent the night at Raine's, and that this was their morning after.

Emily closed her eyes and took a slow, deep breath. It wasn't enough to ease the knot forming in her stomach.

There were only two reasons Raine could want to come by later that her mind didn't immediately reject. Either he was going to explain something about why he'd been photographed with Olivia in New York and why she was here in L.A. and at yoga with him now that defied any rational explanation Emily could come up with on her own, or he was going to tell her he didn't want to see her anymore.

The knot doubled in size when she considered option two.

No matter which one it was, though, she and Raine needed to talk. She just hoped what he had to say wouldn't leave her with more regrets than she already had for how they'd left things on Sunday night.

She read his message again, then started to type. Yes. I'll be home. She sent the text.

Emily waited, staring at her phone's screen, but there was no reply. She had a feeling there wouldn't be until class was over, which gave her at least ninety minutes to stop falling apart.

The time between Emily leaving her yoga class and Raine showing up at her apartment felt as though it was an eternity. After making it home in record time, she hadn't been able to sit still. So she'd cleaned the kitchen, vacuumed the living room and her bedroom, and changed her clothes four times.

Then she waited.

More than two hours after leaving her yoga class, her doorbell finally rang. Emily's palms were clammy and nearly slipped on the door handle when she opened the door.

"Hi." Raine stood in front of her, alone.

He'd changed out of his yoga clothes into black jeans and a dark gray T-shirt, so she knew he had been home before coming here. She wondered if that's where he'd left Olivia, or if she actually lived here and had gone with him from here to New York first. If she did live in L.A., and if she had traveled to New York with him, what did that mean?

Raine jammed his hands into the pockets of his jeans. The movement pulled Emily out of her thoughts.

"Hi," she echoed. Her feet were rooted to the floor, and she felt lightheaded. She held on to the doorframe, not trusting herself to stay steady. A few seconds passed in silence while they looked at one another, neither of them moving.

Raine was the one to end the stalemate. "Is it okay if I come inside?"

"Um, yeah."

Emily stepped to the side, giving him room to come in. He kept his eyes on her as he walked by and she closed the door. Without a word, she headed for the living room, with him following behind her.

She stopped short of the sofa, not knowing if this conversation was something she should sit down for. She decided to stay standing.

He hesitated, then spoke again. "Are we okay?"

We. He was still talking about she and him, together. Emily hoped that was a positive sign.

"I don't know," she admitted. "I mean, I want us to be. I tried going to your house to talk to you twice." She paused to swallow, letting her gaze settle on a spot on the carpet. "Before I knew you were in New York and before I knew about Olivia, that is."

"Before you knew about Liv?" he asked. "Her being at yoga this morning, you mean?"

Liv? she thought. That sounded just as familiar as they'd looked sitting together at yoga. But then she glanced at Raine and could tell he was truly confused. Emily wondered if she'd missed something, or if he had.

"I was okay yesterday when I saw the photo of you two on Wally's site, and I thought she was someone you knew who was involved with your movie or that she was a friend who lived in New York. Until I saw her in our yoga class with you, here, clear across the country from where the photo was taken. I didn't expect that."

Raine's forehead creased. "There's a photo of us on Wally's site?"

"Yep." She chewed the inside of her lip.

"What did Wally say about it?"

"I'll let you read it." Emily opened Wally's site on her phone and searched for Raine's name. She tapped the link to yesterday's article and handed over her phone.

Their fingers brushed as he took it from her. There was something magnetic in the brief contact that urged her to keep her hand there, connected by their touch. Raine's hand moved away, though, bringing the phone closer to his eyes so he could examine the photo on the screen.

Emily let her hand fall back to her side. She watched him, noticing his knitted brow and the way his lips pressed together as he used his finger to scroll.

When he stopped scrolling and his gaze remained focused on one spot on the screen, she knew he'd finished the article. She watched him briefly close his eyes, then open them again and raise his head. He kept her phone clutched in his hand.

"Is Liv why you left when you saw me this morning?" he asked.

It wasn't a question she wanted to answer after telling herself she wouldn't be the jealous girl who jumped to conclusions. There was no getting out of it, though, with Raine standing here, his eyes fixed on her. She was sure he saw the truth written all over her face.

"Kind of," she said. "I mean—I don't know. Between that and Cory being there, and not having heard from you while you were gone, I didn't know what else to do."

"If I'd known about this before now, I would have called you to warn you and to tell you who Liv is. This is the last thing I would have wanted you to think twice about."

Emily nodded, even though she still didn't know who Liv was. She wanted to ask, but she didn't trust her voice. Raine must have sensed that, because he continued.

"We grew up together in Minnesota and she's one of my closest friends in the world. This could have been a photo from any time I've been in New York since she moved there. We always have lunch when I'm in town."

That she could accept, but something else was still off. If Olivia lived in New York, it didn't explain why she'd been at yoga here in L.A. this morning.

"Why did she come back here with you if she lives in New York?" Emily asked.

Her voice was quiet and strained, something that didn't go unnoticed by Raine. He touched her shoulder, letting his hand settle there.

"She and her husband, Matt, both came back with me. They're staying at my house and coming to the After it All premiere."

Olivia had a husband. Emily wondered why she hadn't seen him at yoga, too. Had she been so focused on Raine and the surprise of seeing the woman from the photo right in front of her that she just hadn't noticed?

"Was Matt at yoga?" She hadn't thought it was a funny question, but it made Raine grin.

"He wouldn't set foot in a yoga class if you paid him to, but Liv wanted to try it." He glanced at the phone he still held, where the photo of him and Olivia was still on the screen. "I can see why it might have looked bad, between this and her being there this morning. The photo didn't show her left hand, so no one could see her engagement and wedding rings—not that I'd expect the tabloids to hold off on speculation based on that."

"I didn't notice her rings when I saw her at yoga this morning," Emily confessed. She couldn't believe she'd let herself read into something so much. She was no better than Wally or Tinseltown Buzz.

"I get the feeling you were a little overwhelmed," Raine said gently. "It probably didn't help that we hadn't spoken since Sunday, and then that interview happened, followed by all of this. I thought I was giving us both time to cool off and think by making myself wait until I could see you in person to talk to you. That backfired badly." He brought his thumb up to stroke her cheek. "I did miss you, you know. Like crazy, even though it was just a few days."

It only took looking at his face and the tenderness there for Emily to believe him. "I missed you, too," she said. "I meant it when I wrote that text."

His thumb was tracing her bottom lip now. She held her breath, her body swaying closer to him. There was so much they still hadn't figured out and needed to, but all she could focus on was how close he was, and the warmth of his touch.

She kissed his thumb and looked into his eyes. His hand moved back to her cheek as he bent his head over hers. When their lips met, Emily felt herself relax for the first time in days.

She nearly missed the sound of a key in the lock, but they both heard the apartment door open at the same time.

"Are you home, Em?" Shelby called out from the foyer. "Seriously, what is wrong with guys? You won't believe the message Darren left me. I don't think he gets that we're broken up, because—" Shelby stopped, clapping a hand over her mouth when she walked into the living room and saw Emily and Raine together.

"Hey, Shelby," Raine greeted her.

"I'm so sorry." Shelby pulled her hand away from her mouth. "I had no idea you were here."

"You're home from work early," Emily said.

"I finished up with a client and decided to take the rest of the day off." Shelby's eyes darted from Emily to Raine, and back to Emily again. "I should let you two talk. I mean, not that I know about—um, yeah. You two haven't seen each other in a few days. I should just go somewhere. Like my bedroom. Continue."

Shelby turned around and nearly sprinted for the hallway. Emily heard her bedroom door close a moment later.

"Just a guess that Shelby knows about our conversation on Sunday?" An amused smile tugged at Raine's mouth.

"No idea what would have given that away."

"I feel bad if she thinks she has to hide out in her own home while we talk. Sounds like she's had a rough day dealing with that Darren guy."

Emily's phone chirped before she could respond. Raine realized he was still holding it when it chirped a second time, and he glanced down at the screen as he began handing it back to her. Something he saw there made him pause.

"Reading my messages?" Emily teased. She couldn't read his expression. "I'm kidding, you know. You can read anything that's on there if you want to."

Raine didn't speak as he held the phone out to her. She took it from him and looked at what was on the screen.

The first message was a photo of her and Raine standing at her open door. The second was a text from Wally.

Why is Raine Kingston at your apartment?

Emily felt the air leave her lungs. It had been easy to explain the last photo Wally had been sent, with her sitting next to Raine at yoga. She knew it would be a lot harder to make a photo of him at her door seem quite so innocent.

Her eyes met Raine's. He knew just as well as she did that Wally expected an answer, and that this brought them right back to where they'd been on Sunday night. It wasn't a conversation she wanted to have with Shelby in the next room. Most of all, it wasn't a conversation she wanted to see end the same way it had a few days ago.

Raine put his arm around her. She leaned her head on his shoulder, not sure what to say or do.

"Do you want to get out of here for a couple of days, away from all of this?" he asked. "Just really talk and figure things out?"

"More than anything," she replied.
