《Day-to-Day Kindred》Chapter 41: Wunderkind

“So...Essex said...”
“Yeah.”
“And then Sola told you...”
“Uh huh.”
“And now...Harley’s in a bit of a state.”
“Pretty much.” Julia agreed, tapping her fingers together. “It’s hard to believe this was happening under our noses.”
Wess waved her hand. “To be fair, that’s when we were spending the night together.”
“Well, yeah, but still.” Julia said, muttering. “This must have been how Joleicia felt when Florey left...”
“I’m sorry?”
“Nothing.” Julia assured, sighing out and checking her tablet. “She should be here soon.”
Wess joined Julia’s side. “Does she know about...us?”
Julia shook her head.
“Good. The less people know, the better.” Wess insisted, as Julia frustratedly stared down at her tablet. “...something the matter?”
“...yeah.” Julia let out, facing Wess. “I haven’t told my mum about us.”
“Yes, I know that. What’s the problem?” Wess said.
“I know we’ve gotta keep our relationship to us, and the team...but can’t we let up a little?” Julia asked. “The tournament’s gonna end soon.”
“And we can make it public then, permitting.” Wess clarified.
“But when do we stop?” Julia asked. “What if you get an internship after winning? Or a client wants to give us some work? Are we still gonna keep the secret?”
“It’s...Julia, it depends.” Wess explained, holding her hand. “We need work. If any of us are going to become Venators in the future, clients have to see us as reliable; stable. As much as I love you, we can’t afford to waste two years of an entire teams worth of degrees on some PDA.”
Julia breathed out. “...it’s more than PDA.”
Wess rested her hand on Julia’s, looking down at them locked together. “I know...it’s just for a little longer.”
Julia and Wess stayed silent for a moment, just as a car horn caused them both to jump, as they very quickly separated, acting like they weren’t doing what they were just doing.
Julia looked down the road and noticed her mum’s car pulling up, before she stepped out, taking her sunglasses off.
“You would not believe the traffic.” Madelyn insisted, taking herself to Julia and Wess. “I think everyone in Detu City has a grudge against me.”
“I-It’s probably just busy cause of the tournament...” Julia mentioned, before pointing to Wess. “Mum...this is Wess.”
Madelyn looked her over, before going back to Julia. “What? The rest of the team couldn’t be bothered?”
Julia wasn’t ready to reply, as Wess stepped in. “They’re all quite busy at the moment. I’m sure you saw what happened to Harley on TV.”
“Oh, yeah. Poor girl...” Madelyn said, just as Wess held out a hand.
“For the record, I don’t have a grudge against you.” Wess remarked, as Madelyn raised an eyebrow.
“Well, aren’t I lucky?” Madelyn joked, shaking her hand, before looking to Julia and giving a thumbs up. “So you’re the rich girl I’ve heard about?”
“Well, my parents are, but I’m...” Wess started, before sighing out. “Yes.”
“Nice, nice. I guess my Julia’s in good company.” Madelyn said, before putting her sunglasses back on. “No more handouts from me, huh?”
Julia pouted to herself, as Wess hurried up to Madelyn excitedly.
“So...is it alright to call you Madelyn?”
“It’s my name.” She insisted, looking back at Wess. “So yeah.”
“Right.” Wess muttered. “I’ve been curious. What was Julia like before coming he-”

Before Wess could continue, Julia pulled her by the arm, clearly miffed at her, as Madelyn chuckled a little.
“Basically like this, but way worse.” Madelyn remarked, taking off her sunglasses again just to wave them around. “I didn’t see her much during high school, but she was a menace.”
“Mum!” Julia complained, as Madelyn scoffed.
“Oh, what, am I wrong? Most of the time when I heard about you, it’s cause you’d punch a kids lights out for picking on you.” Madelyn mentioned, as Wess slowly turned to Julia.
“Did she now?” Wess asked, trying to hold back her excitable smile, as Julia desperately spun around to hide her blush.
“Well, from what I heard, the kids were assholes.” Madelyn brought up, before sighing out. “But you seemed to mellow out after you an...”
Julia quickly stepped forward and took Madelyn aside, as Wess tried to catch what they were saying.
“...don’t ment...”
“...come on alre...”
“...I do...it’s no...”
“...kay, if you s...”
They came back over, as Madelyn rolled her eyes.
“Sorry, can’t mention that.” Madelyn groaned, looking back down at Julia. “Yada yada, something about respect.”
Julia showed some sort of relief, as Madelyn turned her attention back to the academy. “Alright, show me to the arena. Any more walking and I’m gonna force you to drag me.”
Julia pointed Madelyn in the right direction, as she led the trio, with Wess pulling Julia back to have an aside.
“It seems someone’s keeping their secrets.” Wess insisted, as Julia hid a bit behind her hair.
“Sorry. There’s a reason I never mention what it was like before coming here...” Julia clarified, just as Wess reached out to hold her hand, comforting Julia slightly, only for Madelyn to look around them, causing Wess to move her hand to a far less inconspicuous pat on the back.
Julia pouted again and tried to distract herself as they walked, as the only thing she really wanted was to keep holding Wess’ hand.
———
Harley’s eyes fluttered awake, registering the infirmary interior and familiar sting throughout her leg.
It had only been a few days, and already, it was starting to get frustrating. It was hard to recall what had happened by the end of her last match, since most of what she remembered was an indescribable pain, and the samey walls and lack of stimulation wasn’t helping much either.
Cautiously, she pulled up her sheet to inspect the state of her leg. A fresh wrap had been placed around it with a couple bloodstains standing out, but it was otherwise intact. She could barely move it, and frankly didn’t want to.
She dropped her head back down on the bed, trying to get comfortable again, as her eyes slowly closed.
“...”
“...”
“Heeey.”
Harley carefully opened one eye, before finding a hand waving in front of her face.
“Just checking up. How’s the leg?” Asked a girl, sitting on the other side of Harley’s bed with her legs crossed.
Harley sat up to address her a little. “...well, it’s been stabbed.”
“Really? Huh. You think as a doctor, I’d know that.” She joked, scribbling something down on her clipboard. “Well, trainee.”
“Where’s Miss Pather?” Harley asked, as the girl just shrugged.
“Taking the day off? The tournament’s slowed down a bit, so you’re the only case we’ve had recently.” The girl admitted, pointing to the numerous empty beds. “I get to look over you.”

Harley did her best to lean over her bed and read the girl’s name tag, which looked to say ‘Kitty.’
“Hmm hmm hmm...man, this is fun!” Kitty beamed, standing up. “I wanna get used to this feeling. Empty beds, healthy patients. That’s what I say.”
Harley watched her bounce around, almost briming with too much energy, before she rested her head again. “Could ya keep it down? This shit hurts.”
“Yeah, sorry about that. The painkillers are only so effective.” Kitty assured, taking a seat next to Harley. “So, who was that girl you fought?”
“How should I know? I’ve never met her before. First, we’re fighting like normal, then she pulls a knife literally out of nowhere and ends it immediately.” Harley remarked, feeling her leg sting again. “Ow...”
“Yeah, crazy stuff. Apparently, she had a Whil which let her hide away objects and just didn’t tell anyone. Not even her own team knew.” Kitty replied, resting her head in her hands. “If it helps, you won by default.”
“Yay...” Harley weakly celebrated, as Kitty giggled to herself.
“You’re fun.” Kitty grinned, before noting Harley’s sour demeanour. “Is it the leg?”
Kitty started wiggling her fingers. “I would use my magic powers to heal it, but it’d just be a waste. And we wouldn’t get to have this conversation.”
“Why are we having a conversation?” Harley insisted, as Kitty leaned in further.
“Because I see someone who’s bothered by more than just a stab wound.” Kitty guessed, throwing Harley off. “Even during the match, you weren’t having fun.”
Kitty pointed to the ceiling. “And just looking at you, I can tell you usually get a kick out of that sort of thing.”
Of course I do. I’m training as a Venator. Harley thought, staring back at Kitty, who just looked more invested in Harley’s problems.
Harley sighed. “...if I tell you, can I sleep?”
“Probably not. I’m very talkative.”
Harley ignored her and spoke anyway. “...I’m having trouble with my girlfriend, okay?”
“No!” Kitty let out, slapping Harley’s leg. “That was so my g-!”
“Fuck!” Harley let out, grabbing at her wound, as Kitty realised she was hitting the wrong leg.
“Oh, sorry.” Kitty said, getting up quickly. “You know, we have some stronger pain killers for more severe cases.”
Harley glared at her, as Kitty coughed awkwardly.
“I’ll just get some.”
Kitty hurried over to one of the cabinets, as she started rummaging around. “So? What’s the problem? Hate her cooking? Bad sex?”
Kitty brought over a pill bottle and took a few out. “Boring dates? Unwinnable argument? Another woman?”
Harley jerked a bit at that last one, as Kitty smiled at her handy work.
“Bang on the money.” Kitty said, handing Harley the pain killers. “Now, just take you-”
Harley downed them in one gulp, leaning back in ecstasy, as Kitty just kept to herself.
“Sorry about that.” Kitty said, leaning over Harley’s bed again. “I just get so fascinated in people, you know?”
Kitty sat up properly. “I could give you some advice. Unless you want to save that for when you’re back with your team.”
Harley grimaced. “Well...she’s in my team.”
“Oh, get out. That’s perfect.” Kitty grinned. “Come on, let me help. I could really use the distraction.”
What’s with this girl? Harley thought, giving her another once over. Pather’s nowhere near this nosy...but I could use the distraction...and someone to talk too...
“Why do you wanna help me?” Harley asked, as Kitty shrugged.
“Cause I’m a lover.” Kitty insisted. “And also, while your leg might be the one damaged...it seems the real pain is in your heart.”
Harley sunk her head into her hands, as Kitty just laughed it off. “Come on. I had to say it.”
Harley gave herself a moment, before sighing out. “...so, her name’s Sola...”
———
“Do do do...do do do...”
“Sola?”
“Yeah?”
“Could you please refrain from humming?”
“Oh, oops.” Sola said, rubbing her neck awkwardly. “Sorry. Reading these yearbooks is really boring.”
Essex got up from her seat and sat on the floor with Sola, trying to find space in the decently cramped dorm room study. “Have you found anything on Gamma yet?”
“Nope.” Sola admitted, flipping through another one. “He didn’t complete first-year, so he’s not even listed.”
“I see.” Essex said, looking over the book too. “Apologies. I wish I could help more, but I hate the library computers.”
“It’s fine. You’ve gotta be in fighting shape in case Harley can’t compete.” Sola excused, sitting up. “Hey, you wanna do something today?”
“Besides this?” Essex wondered, as Sola nodded back.
“Wess’ match with Cyrus is tomorrow, but we’ve got time to kill before then.” Sola said, before getting an idea and sitting up. “You wanna go to Detu City and play laser tag?!”
Essex looked confused. “Uhh...”
“You get these plastic guns and you shoot people and then their jacket lights up and there’s points!” Sola exclaimed, making the motions herself. “I thought it could help me with aiming my cannons.”
Essex watched Sola miming out the actions, as she just sat back and enjoyed how happy Sola looked, almost considering that they go their alone, before realising what she was doing and standing back up.
“I-I am sorry, but I don’t think we should...” Essex started, as Sola looked surprised.
“Why? It’s just laser tag. I can invite Julia too.”
“That...isn’t the problem.” Essex admitted, looking somewhat naked without her scythe. “I don’t trust myself when it’s...the two of us.”
Sola realised what she meant, as she led Essex to sit back down.
“But...even if we’re not that, we can still be friends.” Sola insisted, grabbing her hands. “There’s no way that’s gonna stop.”
“...I can’t do that.” Essex confessed, grabbing Sola’s hands back. “...there will always be this longing.”
Essex found her face severely blushing, before she blurted out her words. “Y-You are very sweet, and I think you’re pretty! I’m envious of how creative you are, a-and you impress me every day!”
Essex didn’t notice she was breathing heavy, before she faced the floor again, realising just how much she let out.
“I-It wouldn’t be fair on either of us...”
Sola slowly let go of her hands, as she settled onto the floor.
“...Essex...I love the idea.” Sola admitted, before taking a heavy sigh and sitting back. “But I also love Harley. And if she’s not comfortable with it, the-”
“But was she not open with you?” Essex insisted, throwing off Sola. “In Denilee. She stated that you two were not ‘exclusive.’”
“...that...was mostly on her end...” Sola admitted. “I-I didn’t real-”
“But you wish to now.” Essex pointed out. “Why is it different now?”
Essex focused her breathing. “It does not seem fair that she is give this freedom while you’re not able.”
Sola hung her head in thought, trying to think of any good reason to justify Harley’s actions.
“...it’s different.” Sola insisted, facing Essex again. “Because it’s you.”
Sola wiped her nose. “...you’re our teammate. It doesn’t matter if it’s all three of us, or just me dating both of you. The relationship still affects the team.”
“...I worried as much.” Essex admitted, turning her back to Sola. “This...is why I didn’t want to confess...I knew it was forseca behaviour and...”
Essex took a heavy breath. “I refuse to go behind her back and make things harder for you, but if this continues to be an issue...” Essex stated, standing up and gripping her hands tightly. “I may have to leave the team.”
Sola’s eyes widened, as she jumped and grabbed Essex’s arm. “What?!”
“It...I was already planning to work solo after graduation.” Essex explained, pulling Sola off. “If we can no longer be in the same environment, then I will not torture you with guilt. Work will worsen, and you bo-”
“I-It’s not torture, really. It’s just awkward.” Sola encouraged, reaching out for Essex again. “Please...don’t go...I couldn’t imagine Team Valiant without you.”
“...it isn’t my first option either.” Essex reasoned. “But it wouldn’t be right otherwise. Relias.”
Just as Essex turned around, she noticed Sola’s eyes were welling up.
Essex held her breath, just as Sola reached for Essex’s hand again.
“W-We can fix it...” Sola assured. “Please...”
Essex slipped her hand out. “...only if I know that Harley will be okay.” Essex said. “If she is comfortable working beside me after this confession, then I will rethink my option.”
Sola sniffed her nose, before beaming at Essex. “G-Great! We’ll just get you guys on the same page again!”
Sola grabbed up the yearbooks and hurried out of the study, before popping her head back in. “I wanna plan some things for when Harley leaves the infirmary! Don’t worry, I know how to fix this!”
Essex was left standing in the study, reaching out for the scythe that wasn’t there, before reflecting on her actions these last few months.
“...forseca...”
———
Wess struck her training post over and over, changing her angle of attack each time, before stepping back and running up to it to add some momentum.
The post showed little give, as designed, right as Wess took a second to breath.
“Hey, uhh...rich one! The one with the dress!”
Wess turned around and noticed Madelyn approaching, as she held Belvedere by her side. “Wess. Did you need something?”
“Nah, just bored of the campus already.” Madelyn admitted. “I’m staying in the temporary dorms overnight to watch tomorrow’s match. What’s the training for?”
Wess turned back to the post to keep practicing. “I’m fighting my ex-boyfriend tomorrow.”
“In an official capacity?” Madelyn asked.
“Yes. He’s my opponent in the tournament.” Wess explained, as Madelyn connected the dots.
“Oh shit, it’s your match. I swear, if you don’t tell me something at least five times, I’ll forget.” Madelyn complained, as Wess focused on her sword slashes. “Are you worried you won’t be on good terms after the match?”
“No, I think we’re both too mature for that.” Wess reasoned, putting another heavy slash into the post. “Truth be told...I’m worried about him wiping the floor with me...”
“Heh, yeah.” Madelyn snickered. “I’ve seen the kid fight. He’s got the skill to match his talent, and worst of all, he doesn’t seem to care much about winning.”
“Exactly...” Wess muttered, really digging into the post, as the weight of her upcoming match really lay into her. “Our team needs this win right now...”
Madelyn scratched her nose, as she kicked the ground a little. “So, uhh...how’s Julia doing here?”
Wess went to strike, before being distracted by the question. “What?”
“How’s she holding up? When I’m not around?” Madelyn asked, as Wess decided to sheath Belvedere and face her proper.
“Fine. She’s a very capable leader.” Wess said, folding her arms. “As memory recalls, Milo asked a very similar question.”
Madelyn’s eyebrows raised. “Did he now?”
“I think you’re both allowed to be concerned about her.” Wess argued.
“Yeah, you’d think.” Madelyn complained, waving her hands. “But apparently, I’m not allowed to worry, or be curious. Just ungrateful...”
I think Julia would appreciate me not getting in the middle of this. Wess thought, before folding up Artisan and deciding to leave. “Apologies, but I have some studies I ne-”
“Hold on.” Madelyn said, grabbing Wess’ shoulder, as she jumped back. “I still wanna ask something.”
“...yes?” Wess asked, calming herself.
“I’ve got a theory...” Madelyn admitted, leaning into Wess.
“A good one?” Wess asked, as Madelyn raised an eyebrow.
“I think...Julia’s secretly dating someone.” Madelyn said, folding her arms in pride.
Wess tried to hide her panic, as she held herself back from looking too obvious. “O-Oh.”
“This is classic high school behaviour. She’s always been cagey about this kinda stuff.” Madelyn added, standing back up. “So if you see anything suspicious, just...”
Madelyn tapped her nose, winking back to Wess, as Wess just agreed with her.
“R-Right. Mum’s the wo-” Wess started, before blushing and leaving proper. “I-I-I really must be going!”
“Alright! Say hi to Julia for me!” Madelyn called out, as Wess left on an awkward thumbs up, with Madelyn folding her arms and groaning. “Relationship drama, I swear.”
———
“Holy shit, that’s a lot.”
“Yeah.”
“In the last two months?”
“I know.”
“This Essex...” Kitty said, kicking her legs. “She sounds like an interesting character.”
Harley glanced down at her bed fondly. “Yeah, she really is...she...”
Harley realised what she was doing and shot her head back up. “B-But you can see why it’s so hard to deal with.”
“I’ll say. I can’t imagine what you’ve gone through.” Kitty noted. “Dealing with a confession out of nowhere, from a friend no less, and then having to reject her right then and there. You’ve got more chutzpah than me, that’s for sure.”
“Yeah, exactly! Finally, someone who agrees with me!” Harley let out, flopping onto her bed, as Kitty chuckled lightly.
“With that said, you don’t talk to a stranger about this kinda stuff if it isn’t important to you.” Kitty reasoned, leaning on the bed casually. “If this is supposedly Essex’s problem, like you said.”
Kitty shrugged. “And you wouldn’t need the tournament as a distraction, would you?”
Harley furrowed her brow and looked away, as Kitty poked her side again.
“So, what are you really worried about?” Kitty insisted, only making Harley even more uncomfortable.
Harley didn’t want to speak, even if she knew she had no other option. Keeping quiet meant sitting with it longer, but admitting it...
Harley let out a sharp breath.
“What if Sola thinks...she’s better than me?”
Kitty stayed quiet, as Harley’s voice started to waver.
“I-It wouldn’t be the first time. Every break up’s been a decision...” Harley admitted, a few tears forming. “Me or something else, and it’s n-never me...”
Harley wiped her nose, as Kitty grabbed her a few tissues. “I-It’s always so easy for them to move on, but it’s not for me.” Harley let out, sniffling again. “I-I put a lot into these relationships...even if it doesn’t always show...”
Harley rubbed her eyes, as she let out more tears. “I love Sola so much...a-and I can’t lose her...but I’ve been a dick to Essex, even though I-I know she doesn’t deserve it...why wouldn’t they leave me? I-I-I'm the one causing problems!”
Harley let herself cry into her hands, taking numerous tissues from Kitty, as she leaned over and rubbed Harley’s back.
“...you p-probably think I’m just some jerk complaining for no reason...” Harley let out, trying her best to recover.
“No, that’s actually a really valid concern.” Kitty assured, surprising Harley. “Jealousy’s really common among poly relationships, after all. I’d be worried about that too.”
“Y-Yeah. Yeah, right...” Harley added, still surprised to be getting support.
“However, from what you’ve told me of Sola, that would be pretty out of character for her.” Kitty pointed out. “And for Essex, too. No way they’re going to steal themselves away from you.”
“I-It’s not rational.” Harley admitted, staring down at her bed. “...but, this kinda shit always backfire on me. I can’t just...turn off that part of my brain that’s kicking me and telling me I’m stupid for even trying.”
Kitty tapped her chin. “You could kick it back.”
“Come on...” Harley let out, rolling over, as Kitty worried a little.
“Alright, bad time for a joke. Sorry.” Kitty confessed, before poking Harley’s side. “Okay, here’s a thought. What would need to happen for you to be okay with the arrangement? If all three of you are gonna be a part of this, what needs to happen?”
Harley looked over her shoulder, before turning over again. “...to know that they value me, and that I’m just as important to them as...they’d be to me. No taking anything for granted.”
Kitty blew a raspberry. “I think it’s pretty obvious they do, dingus.”
“I mean they have to show it.” Harley exclaimed. “I can’t just have them say it. If they can’t make that clear, then I’m not...”
Harley sighed out. “...I’m not doing that to myself again.”
Kitty stared at Harley, before cocking her head. “Fair enough call. You gotta stick up for yourself.”
Kitty playfully punched Harley’s arm, as Harley let out a weak laugh.
“...I think you’re the first person I’ve felt comfortable talking about this with.” Harley admitted, as Kitty smiled proudly.
“I have that effect on people. It’s probably why I’m so lovable.” Kitty remarked, before a few images flashed on screen, showing off portraits of Wess and Cyrus for their upcoming match. “That’s looking to be fun.”
“That’s my teammate, actually.” Harley admitted. “The grouchy one, not the blonde one.”
“That’s not Sola, is it?” Kitty asked, as Harley laughed again.
“No, her name’s Wess. We both got into the tournament this year.” Harley explained, staring back down at her bed and acknowledging her leg again. “...I hope she’s doing okay.”
———
While walking around the tournament arena at night wasn’t strictly allowed, since most of the security was still taking care of the main campus, this wasn’t really enforced. Fortunately, this meant Wess had some space to clear her head, as she walked out into the spectator stands, intimidated by the size of the place, even without the roaring crowds.
Wess let out a deep sigh, staring up at the tournament arena’s interior while holding herself gently, bracing slightly against the breeze coming through.
“Oh, hey there.”
A voice called out to Wess, as she quickly realised she wasn’t alone, and that Cyrus was just a few rows down the spectator stands, waving to her.
“…well.” Wess said, heading down the stairs. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here until tomorrow.”
“I guess we both had the same idea.” Cyrus remarked, as Wess sidled over and sat beside him. “I was, uhh…having a little trouble sleeping.”
“Yes…I’m not exactly looking forward to our match either.” Wess admitted.
Cyrus nodded to her, before spinning his fingers together. “Talk about a bad matchup. How many other participants are versing their ex?”
“None who would want to admit it openly.” Wess pointed out.
“Fair point.” Cyrus said, looking off into the distance, before giggling to himself. “If you want, I can give you the ex-girlfriend discount.”
Wess chuckled a little. “And what might that entail?”
“I go easier on you in the fight, but I get to brag more when I win.” Cyrus joked, getting a laugh from Wess.
“What a fair deal.” Wess remarked, as Cyrus leaned back in his seat.
“I’ll admit, I’m pretty nervous.” Cyrus said. “Apparently, my sister’s gonna be watching this match too.”
“Did she feel like supporting you?” Wess asked, as Cyrus scoffed.
“Nope. Actually, she’s watching for you.” Cyrus said, confusing Wess. “I kinda talked about you and the rest of Team Valiant a lot whenever I came home. I mean, out of our year, you guys have easily gone through the most.”
Cyrus sat back up. “Like, seriously, what other second-year team have taken on, what, five Wailing?”
“Actually…the number recently went up again.” Wess admitted, as Cyrus chuckled to himself.
“Of course it did.” Cyrus said, standing back up. “My point still stands. I think you guys are gonna make it big.”
Wess crossed her arms. “Of course, we are. I’m part of the team, after all.”
Cyrus hid another chuckle. “How familiar…”
Wess cocked her head, as Cyrus waved dismissively. “Don’t worry about it.”
Cyrus stretched his back, before rubbing his neck. “Anyway, the real problems the sponsors.”
Wess cocked her head. “Are you worried about not impressing them?” Wess asked, as Cyrus happily shook his head.
“No, just the opposite. I’m like a commodity to them.” Cyrus remarked. “Ever since I got admitted, everyone’s agreed I’m already at the top of my game. Now that the tournament’s here, offers just keep coming in.”
“Oh, it must be terrible getting so much work.” Wess commented, as Cyrus glared at her.
“Yeah, I get it, I’m fortunate, but I hate feeling like this.” Cyrus said. “My future’s been planned by everyone around me, and I’m just going through the motions.”
Wess tapped her foot silently. “I suppose the best thing for it is to win the tournament and decide from there.” Wess suggested, glancing over Cyrus’ lazy posture. “Though, judging by your attitude, that doesn’t seem very appealing, does it?”
“Yeah. You saw me during my matches. I’m bored as shit.” Cyrus admitted, stretching out over the seats. “Think you can do better?”
“…I’ll try.” Wess muttered, before standing up herself. “Anyway, I should attempt to get at least some rest tonight. Best of luck.”
Wess got up to leave, just reaching the stairs, before stopping.
“Can I…ask for a favour?”
Cyrus blinked. “Do you want me to throw the match?”
Wess shook her head. “No, no, just…when we meet on the field, can you play it up a little?”
“Play it...?” Cyrus wondered, as Wess waved her hands.
“You know, make it theatrical. Build up the rivalry. I promise it’s for both of our benefits.” Wess insisted, as Cyrus shrugged happily.
“Consider it done.” Cyrus said, watching as Wess went to leave the arena stands. “And uhh, good luck. I won’t hold back, so be ready.”
Wess scoffed, before ducking her head back from the exit. “Those were my intentions as well.”
———
“Fight time, folks! What a fun fight to be kicking off this week!” Spence announced, as the crowd started to pack into the spectator stands. “We’ve got an exciting match with the ever-popular Cyrus Vesper today, as well as a bright, young up-and-comer Wess Delacroix Nouvel!”
“Don’t hype her up so much. People are here for Cyrus.” Vent insisted beside her, scrolling on his tablet.
“I want to make it a fair match, Vent.” Spence encouraged, as Vent sighed out.
“Against him?” Vent said. “If you want that, then don’t give him a weapon. Actually, he could still throw her off the arena. Nevermind.”
Vent settled himself in his seat, getting comfortable. “Now, just a reminder that the competitors are gonna be miced from here on out, so no incidental chatting over them, okay?”
Spence grimaced at him, before turning her attention to the arena with a pleading desperation. “Please, do your best, both of you.”
Wess paced around the arena entrance, trying her best not to stare at the monitor counting down to her match, despite her still counting down in her head.
“...but if I pivot...weight contention...can I out manoeuvre him? His Whil won’t allow it...”
She ran her hands through her hair, before leaning against a wall, then sinking to the ground.
“...I must prepare myself for losing...” Wess assured. “Even with my best efforts, there’s no way of guaranteeing success...even if I’m letting my team dow...”
Wess finally heard what she was saying to herself and stopped talking, before staring up at the ceiling in hopes of regaining some sort of composure.
“...this may be a minor setback, but not a crippling one.” Wess said, doing her best to stand back up and dust herself off. “Even if I lose, there’s plenty of ways to recover. We’ll always have next year, and Harley might have a miraculous recovery...we’ve got options...”
Wess let a breath out, before proudly facing the counter again, waiting for the announcement to head out.
“Go Wess, you’re the best! Cyrus is fine, but put him to rest!” Sola cheered happily, jumping up from her seat, as Essex stayed firmly sitting in hers.
“Hey, is she out on the field yet?” Julia asked, stepping into her seat, as Sola shook her head back.
“Not yet. Aren’t you gonna join her?” Sola asked, as Julia waved her hand.
“I don’t wanna distract her too much. I’ll meet with her after.” Julia insisted, before noticing Essex acting silent next to them. “Is she okay?”
Sola looked back at Essex and went to whisper to Julia, before the announcement letting the contestants in and the noise of the crowd started to bleed in. “She can explain later.”
“Alright.” Julia said, before noticing Wess entering the arena and immediately standing up from her seat and shouting.
“You’ve got this, Wess!!! You’re gonna destroy him!!!”
The crowd around her started to give her stares, as she immediately sunk back into her seat. “S-Sorry, sorry...”
Wess quickly went and grabbed Belvedere, casually spinning it in her hand, before picking up Artisan as well, noticing the sunlight gleaming off its finish as she faced the arena.
She started to make her way up to the arena, getting whiplash from the juxtaposition of the night before, before reaching the top and locking eyes with Cyrus on the other end, casually using his Whil to flip his claymore back and forth behind him.
Wess repressed her concern and kept walking, before they both reached their marks, waiting for the timer’s countdown to finish.
The crowd was already buzzing excitedly once Cyrus entered the stand, as he rolled his eyes to himself, before remembering his promise to Wess.
He gave Wess a little nod as heads up, before shoving his hands in his pockets.
“So, you decided to fight me!” He announced, as the crowd was caught off guard from finally hearing the competitors for the first time. “I’m surprised!”
Wess immediately caught on, as Cyrus threw out his hand and pointed with his claymore, dictating his point.
“You really think you can best the greatest fighter in the academy?”
Right as he finished, Wess held out Belvedere just the same. “I only hope you’ll take your soon-to-be defeat with grace! No holding back!”
The crowd erupted into an uproarious cheer, as Cyrus slowly grew a smile, before throwing his hands up.
“Alright then!” He played up, entering a combative pose. “Let’s make this a match for the ages!”
“Ooo, don’t you love seeing both participants really getting into it?” Spence insisted, as Vent leaned into his seat.
“Finally, some good theatrics.” Vent said, before turning to the mic. “This is shaping up to be the fight to remember! The wunderkind Cyrus Vesper versus the determined unknown Wess Delacroix Nouvel! Will Cyrus handle this with ease, or will Wess managed to pull out a vic-”
“Will Wess truly excel and live up to her potential?” Spence interrupted, giving Vent a knowing look. “Competitors, get ready!”
The timer was almost at zero, as Wess did her best to prepare, even against the insurmountable odds. She had far less talent and skill, comparatively poorer technique, not to mention having no Whil, but...
...at least she had people cheering her on.
Wess gave one last look to Team Valiant in the crowd, just as the timer hit zero, finally starting the match for real.
It was go time.
Wess entered a defensive stance, ready for Cyrus to come rushing at her, only to realise he was standing in place, goading her to come and confront him directly.
Wess gave it a second, before letting up on her stance and slowly wandering around the arena’s diameter, testing the waters.
Cyrus did the same, matching her walk step for step, still goading her, as the crowd waited for the shoe to drop; for either of them to take a swing at the other.
Eventually, after enough testing, Wess’s walk turned into sprint, as she ran toward Cyrus in an arc, running her sword across the ground, as Cyrus flicked his finger in her direction.
Soon after, his claymore came rushing toward her, ready to cut her off, before she expertly blocked it with Artisan, charging faster at Cyrus, only for him to spin his fingers around again.
Before she could reach him, his claymore came back around, now aiming for her back, forcing her to dodge to the side instead of blocking.
She struggled with her footing, before properly grounding herself, right as the claymore swung back at her, clashing with Belvedere.
“Whoa! I swear, I heard them colliding from up here in the booth!” Spence exclaimed, jumping around, as Vent pulled his head up to catch the action.
Wess gripped Belvedere tightly, holding back the claymore with all her might, as Cyrus admitted to himself just how impressed he was with how much she’d improved.
Despite her desperate efforts, Cyrus’ strength won out, throwing Wess back, nearly hitting the edge of the arena.
In a panic, Wess quickly got back up and tried to get her bearings, before finding Cyrus again and deciding to charge back at him.
Cyrus simply shook his head, before lifting his fingers up, only for his claymore to emerge from the ground and shoot out in front of her.
Out of frustration, Wess reached out and grabbed its handle, catching Cyrus off guard, as she pulled it to the ground, stood on top of it, and stabbed Belvedere into the hole the claymore had left, hooking the claymore to the ground with Belvedere’s handle.
Wess continued charging at Cyrus with Artisan out in front of her, as Cyrus did his best to pull his claymore out, even pulling his other hand from his pocket and using it to flick Belvedere off.
Wess readied herself for a shield bash, only for the claymore to come rushing back and block her attempt, but not before she made a retreat, grabbing up Belvedere as she ran back.
Both participants took a second to collect themselves, going back to circling each other, with Cyrus thinking through his actions a bit more, and Wess trying to get some stamina back.
“She’s so outclassed...” Julia muttered, before standing back up again. “B-But you’ve still got this! We’ll be proud of you no matter what!!!”
“Beat the odds, Wess!” Sola added, cheering beside her, as Essex quietly cheered to herself, on the edge of her seat.
Having gotten back enough energy, Wess charged at Cyrus again, trying to interrupt before he could retaliate properly, as Cyrus was suddenly working harder to keep up.
Wess held Belvedere out, coaxing Cyrus to strike at her chest, as he fell for it and sent his claymore to do just that. However, just as it was about to reach her, Wess slid underneath it, keeping her momentum and forcing Cyrus to scramble.
Cyrus spun his finger in a circle to try and bring the claymore back around, only for Wess to reach him before it could, finally about to land a strike on him.
With Belvedere outstretched, she went to land a body blow, only for a desperate Cyrus to move his entire hand right in front of Wess, before she was shot back across the field, tumbling across the ground and landing painfully at the edge of the arena again.
Struggling to recover from the whiplash, Wess pulled herself back up, as she noticed Cyrus’s demeanour start to get more serious; more focused on the match and Wess as an opponent.
“What a show of force! Cyrus truly is a talent all on his ow...” Spence started to say, only to get a knowing look from Vent, causing her to pout. “...b-but Wess is putting in her all as well. How will this clash between titans continue?”
While Wess was still letting herself recover, Cyrus’ panic was slowly getting replaced with his typical lackadaisical attitude, as he realised the situation he was in.
Brandishing a cocky smile, he grabbed at his jacket and threw it off of his body, before using his Whil to casually roll up the sleeves on his dress shirt.
So be it, Wess. Cyrus thought, finding his smile getting more natural. No holding back, like we promised.
Suddenly seeing the difference in his approach, Wess readied herself for the oncoming match, almost like it was only really starting now, as she held up Artisan and readied Belvedere.
Cyrus lifted up his hand, with his claymore following, before he pointed out both hands and separated them, as Wess watched the claymore split in half down the middle, one for each hand.
As she realised just what she was up against, Cyrus launched both half-swords toward her, ready to catch her off guard, while she did her best to keep the distance she’d made earlier in the match.
She managed to leap over the first before it swept her legs, right as the second flew toward her head, forcing her to duck suddenly.
Now with his swords much lighter, Cyrus whipped them back around and kept up the manoeuvres, as Wess became too focused on holding back each blow of the swords to give Cyrus any attention.
Right as she had her back to him, Cyrus moved a finger down and shifted the ground underneath Wess’ feet, nearly tripping her up, only for Cyrus to continue pointing, as the ground segmented and slowly formed into a ramp leading all the way outside of the arena.
Due to the steep angle, Wess started sliding down, almost hitting the edge, before stabbing Belvedere into the ground and holding herself up, as Cyrus stood on the edge, giving her a look a confidence, almost hoping she would overcome this.
Wess reached up and managed to get a grip on the edge of the ramp, before she pulled herself up, taking a breath right as she charged at Cyrus again.
Cyrus retaliated by pulling a chunk of the ground up as a wall, blocking her off, as she tried to head around it, only for him to keep doing the same.
However, after a few times doing this, Cyrus went to surround himself completely, only to spot Wess prying apart two of the chunks with Artisan, before pulling herself through and slashing at Cyrus, finally landing a solid hit on him.
Cyrus fell back on his walls, which all crashed and sunk back into the ground, as the crowd gasped at the sudden turn in the fight. He tried to recover by bringing his swords back, only for Wess to retrieve Artisan and run past him, blocking them off from returning, before she turned around and pointed Belvedere right at him.
Cyrus held up his hands, backing up slowly, as Wess started pushing him to the edge of the arena, just as he cracked a smile.
“Wow...I thought I could take more than that...” Cyrus confessed, panting heavily. “You know I could...just throw you off with my Whil, right?”
“But you...wouldn’t do that. You don’t actually...want to hurt me.” Wess reasoned, as they both got closer to the border.
“True...and it would...suck out the fun...tell you what.” Cyrus prefaced, right as his two half-swords came whizzing by Wess’ head, before re-joining in front of him. “Let’s end this...in a proper way.”
He reached out and grabbed the oversized claymore, while resting his finger on the handle and using his Whil to help him hold it. “A proper duel. One good strike from both of us.”
Wess considered the option, even as her victory was right in front of her.
It would be so easy to win right now.
But where would be the fun in that?
Wess lowered Belvedere and nodded, before making some distance between her and Cyrus, giving him a second to adjust to using the weapon this way.
The spectators stayed silent, all holding their breath for the upcoming end of the duel. Even Spence and Vent couldn’t bring themselves to interrupt the action with commentary.
Julia was nervously biting her nails, as Sola was out of her seat, trying to catch everything that was going on.
Only one noise managed to break the silence.
“Y-You’ve got this, Wess!!! Make this a valiant victory!!!”
The crowd all turned to Essex, as she realised how many eyes were on her and sunk back into her chair, not expecting so much attention.
Wess held Belvedere to her side, ready to strike Cyrus down where he stood, just as Cyrus adjusted to the size of the claymore, preparing to do just the same.
Wess prepared her footing, stepping back, with Cyrus following along, until both were ready to charge at the other.
…
…
...and go.
Wess started sprinting toward him, Belvedere shining proudly, as Cyrus ran straight toward her, spinning the claymore in the air to act more like a drill.
Wess held up Artisan to prepare for the joust, before the two suddenly collided in the middle, running past each other after exchanging blows, both panting and slightly hunched over.
After only a few seconds, and as Artisan collapsed to the ground, Wess could feel her grip on Belvedere slipping, only for her exhaustion to be interrupted by the sound of Cyrus hitting the ground, barely sustaining the heavy wound Wess had left on him.
And just like that, he landed on the ground with a thud.
The arena was left silent, expecting Cyrus to lift himself up and keep fighting, or some kind of epic turn in the fight that wasn’t happening.
Finally, a few cheers started to build in the crowd, before the entire stadium was applauding Wess’ victory.
“She won!!! She actually won!!!” Sola screamed, shaking Essex wildly, as Essex tried to clap along with the others, just as Sola realised Julia wasn’t with them. “Hey, where’d Julia go?”
“And an amazing victory for the underdog, Wess Delacroix Nouvel! Not only did she meet the challeng-” Spence started, only for Vent to take the mic from her.
“But she kept a level head and astounded everyone with her quick thinking and proficient technique. We knew you could do it, kid.” Vent finished, handing it back to Spence, who just pouted back at him.
Wess found herself getting back up and waving to the crowd, watching as Cyrus was escorted to the infirmary to be treated, only to realise Julia was running out from the arena entrance and up toward her.
“Wess!” Julia exclaimed, jumping up the join her. “You did it!”
“I suppose I did...” Wess let out, still a bit out of breath, as Julia leaped into a hug with her.
“I’m so proud of you! You’ve come so far!” Julia let out, hugging Wess, before Wess rested her hand behind Julia’s back and suddenly dipped her.
Julia panicked for a second, only to look up at Wess and see her smiling. “W-Wess?”
“Come here.” Wess beaconed, before leaning down and kissing Julia, as Julia’s eyes lit up, letting her melt into the kiss.
The crowd’s cheering turned to hollering, now far more raucous in their celebration, as Wess took her sweet time with their moment.
“My goodness! What a passionate display! I’m just...” Spence let out, wiping a tear from her eye.
They eventually broke the kiss, as Julia took a second for her heart to stop racing, before standing back up on her own.
“B-But Wess, won’t the sponsors...?” Julia asked, as Wess held her hand again.
“I don’t care.” Wess smiled. “I love you.”
Wess gave her another quick kiss, as Julia realised a few tears were rolling down her cheeks, which Wess happily wiped away, before addressing the crowd again, bathing in her well-earned victory.
———
Kitty lifted her head from her work, as she watched Harley happily staring at the TV monitor with the results of the last match.
“How’d your teammate go?”
Harley lay back and sighed. “She won.”
“Against that Cyrus guy? Wow.” Kitty let out, heading over to Harley’s bed. “Must be a fun day for her.”
Just as she sat, Kitty’s watch went off, as she clapped her hands and stood up. “Ooo, it’s time! You should be ready to walk now.”
“Oh, great.” Harley said, sitting up.
“In a few days, you can make a judgement call about whether you still wanna fight in the tournament.” Kitty advised. “Personally, I don’t see any shame in wanting to leave, especially since you’ll be up against that Archer guy next.”
He’s my next opponent? Harley realised, remembering her previous poor interactions with him.
“Also, and this is just me butting in, but I think...” Kitty said, resting her hand on Harley’s. “...it would be best to focus on Sola and Essex. You need to take care of that at some point, and sooner would be better. I’m the doctor too, so you have to listen to me.”
Harley forced a reluctant smile, as she started to get out of her bed with Kitty’s help. “Yeah, I’ll...see...”
“Don’t worry. We all improve with time.” Kitty noted, wrapping her arm around Harley to support her. “I mean, I’m perfect, but still.”
Harley let out a cheap laugh, as Kitty moved her to a separate room to clean up her wound, just as Cyrus was wheeled in from the fight, followed shortly by Wess’ arrival.
“Agh!!! It hurts! Everywhere, it hurts!” Cyrus cried, fidgeting on his bed, just as Wess came in. “Wess! It’s you! You bathe in the glory of victory, then...come to finish the job, huh?”
“By Whilit, what are you on about?” Wess asked, right as Cyrus faked a cough.
“Your...your skills killed me! I’m fading away...” Cyrus managed, as the nurse assessing his wounds rolled her eyes.
“Oh. Well, I always knew it would come to this. What a shame.” Wess remarked, laughing slightly.
“Oh god, Wess…I’m…dying...I’m so cold…” Cyrus played up, clawing at the sky. “It’s going white…Wess? Are you still there?”
“Unfortunately.” Wess said, as Cyrus feigned gasping for air.
“I have…so much unfinished business! Wess, before I go, I need to know…” Cyrus asked, reaching out to her. “Julia…is she…better in bed than me?”
“Yes, without question.” Wess replied immediately, Cyrus grasping at his chest.
“Oh! Such…brutal honesty! It’s only killing me quicker!” Cyrus pleaded, before collapsing onto the bed with his tongue out, definitely dead.
“Oh no, however will we replace him?” Wess joked, just as Cyrus couldn’t help but laugh, as he sat up to face her.
“Look at you. You actually showed up before my team did.” Cyrus remarked, settling in. “Don’t worry, the Solfyst stopped any slicing and dicing.”
“I know. I just wanted to check on you.” Wess said, sitting by his bed. “And thank you for such a good match.”
“Hey, the pleasure was all mine...” Cyrus let out, before shying away awkwardly. “I’ll...be perfectly honest...I kinda had a second goal for the match...”
“To make me look good?” Wess suggested, as Cyrus shook his head.
“You didn’t need help there. Actually...I was kinda hoping to win you back.”
Wess’ eyebrows raised. “Oh.”
“Not, like, in a patronising way. Just wanted to impress you with my fighting skills...” Cyrus admitted. “But then when they were helping me off, I saw...”
Cyrus pointed to the monitor, as Wess realised it was playing a highlight of the kiss between her and Julia.
“...I see.” Wess said, as Cyrus settled into his bed.
“I figured you would’ve moved on by this point. Part of me was just hoping, you know?” Cyrus confessed. “Ow...”
“Oh, I didn’t break your heart, did I?”
“No, that was actually the wound. I think you bruised a rib.” Cyrus guessed, as the nurse left them alone. “So...Julia, huh?”
“Yes, Julia.” Wess repeated, sighing out, as Cyrus chuckled.
“I can’t compete. She has it all.” Cyrus said. “Brown hair. No jacket. A leadery...position.”
“Alright, Mister Casanova.”
“Breasts. I don’t have those.”
“Stop...” Wess said, finding herself laughing, as Cyrus looked proud of himself.
“...to be honest, I think you’ll be happier with her.” Cyrus admitted, glancing down at his bed. “I’m fun and all, but...”
“Come on, no need to throw yourself under the bus.” Wess insisted, leaning over and resting a hand on his arm. “And you're allowed to be mad. Considering how you must be feeling, you’re taking this very well.”
“...yeah. I punched a wall before coming in here.” Cyrus pointed out, showing off his scratched-up hand. “The bruised rib was a lie.”
Letting out a laugh, he shook his head. “It’s fine. I’m not really that jealous.”
Cyrus smiled back at her and rested his hand on hers.
“As long as you’re happy. That’s all that matters.”
Wess smiled back at him, just as Julia made her way in, looking around for Harley.
Before she could, however, she noticed Madelyn sitting on one of the beds, scrolling on her tablet.
“M-Mum. What are you doing here?” Julia asked worriedly, as Madelyn took a breath and stood up.
“I figured you’d be down here. Wess mentioned she was friends with that boy...” Madelyn reasoned, stretching out her back. “...also, Harley was recovering here, so I wanted more gossip about you.”
“Of course...” Julia let out, before suddenly pulling her to the side. “B-But, before anything, I-I just want to explain what happened on th-”
“You know I saw you two holding hands when I drove here, right?” Madelyn admitted, folding her arms.
Julia stayed silent, as Madelyn sighed loudly.
“Geez...I don’t know why you’re so cagey about these things. I’m not gonna scare them away or anything.” Madelyn assured, as Julia was overwhelmed with relief.
“So you’re cool with it?”
Madelyn raised an eyebrow. “You’re a grown up. Date whoever you want. I just wanna know about these things.”
Madelyn scratched her nose. “Though, judging by the crowd’s reaction, I was just as in the dark as everyone else.”
Julia rubbed the back of her neck. “Yeah, sorry. It’s a...work thing.”
“Wow. Wasn’t expecting to reach the point where I started hearing things like that coming from you.” Madelyn said, sighing and smiling to herself. “It’s a work thing...what a leader.”
“M-Mum...” Julia let out, as Madelyn snickered to herself, before jabbing Julia’s arm.
“Kidding, kidding. Hey, if you hate it so much, go complain to your girlfriend about it.” Madelyn insisted, just as Wess walked over to join them. “I think I’ll leave you both to it. And wait for me to leave before you start making out.”
Madelyn started making mocking kissing motions, as Julia’s blush stained her face.
“Y-You’re so gross!” Julia cried, right as Madelyn left, before Wess joined her side.
“Another fun conversation, I’m sure.” Wess let out. “Hey, do you know where Harley is?”
Jullia turned to face her. “I just assumed she was still lying down. Isn’t she in her bed?”
Wess looked around again, just as Harley emerged from the side room by herself, limping slightly as she walked. “There we go.”
“Hey, Harley!” Julia called out, running up to her to try and help her walk, only for Harley to refuse it.
“It’s alright. I got it.” Harley excused, wincing a little as she stepped. “I should be good on my own.”
“I’ll have to thank Pather in person.” Julia admitted. “How are you feeling? You want me to get Sola?”
“Nah, I just wanna fall back onto our couch.” Harley admitted, as Wess rolled her eyes.
“It’s like you were never stabbed.” Wess remarked, as they started heading back to the dorm.
“At least you can take it easy while you recover. Wess just qualified for the top four.” Julia bragged, as Wess tried to look humble.
“No, actually, I’m thinking I’ll still fight my next match.” Harley insisted, shocking the duo stiff in the hall.
“With your leg still recovering?” Julia exclaimed.
“And against that brute Archer?” Wess added, with Harley nodding.
“I’m cleared to keep fighting, if I want. And I’ve got to redeem myself from my last fight, right?” Harley suggested, as Julia and Wess looked to each other.
“But you really don’t need to. Wess can take it from here.” Julia assured. “We should just take a break and focus on the team.”
“Yeah, this is for the team.” Harley promised. “And if I can’t do it after this one, you guys can still cover for my matches.”
“...yeah, I guess.” Julia said. “I think it’s only fair you ask Essex if that’s okay, though. If anyone would want to cover for you, it-”
“Guys, come on. We’ll cross the bridge when we get to it, okay?” Harley said, attempting to make a confident stride through the hall. “Now I’ve gotta figure out how to train like this.”
Julia and Wess attempted to watch Harley make some distance, before giving each other an uncomfortable glance, certain of what was gonna come of this.
“She’s not over it yet, is she?” Wess asked, as Julia shook her head.
“Should we let her? I mean...” Julia suggested, before Wess began taking her through the hall.
“No. I think it’s about time we got everything out into the open.”
