《Whimsical Invitations》Childish Questions

And the child asks,

Why can't I have ice cream for dinner?

And so the child asks,

Why do I have to nap when I'm not tired?

So too can the same be said,

For adults, for humans,

As they look up at their father.

Why does the man knock twice on wood,

When someone speaks an ill omen?

Why do the elderly know to stay inside,

As a storm approaches?

The children,

They're innocent,

They want to know why,

Then they grow older,

Then they get arrogant.

Stomp once, rise again,

Stomp twice, maybe you've learned your lesson,

In the next life, stomp thrice.

So too, can the same be said for every creature living on the world,

As they look up at their father,

The squirrel asks why must it store its nuts,

Its hunger urges him now!

He dies in the winter,

In the next life, he’ll know to store his nuts.

So too can the same be said about demigods,

Oh, woe, my father who art in heaven,

They cry,

Why must the world be this way,

I understand perfection,

And I can accomplish it!

Please let me do so!

Then they see it when its done,

And they want to spit on it,

Defile it,

For it is ugly.

So too can be said about the devil,

As he looks up at his father,

They’re all trash, he calls out,

Let me destroy them,

We’ll try again,

Next time it will be better.

And for all these things,

God is willing to indulge,

Depending on your need to see it,

Why he arranged it this way,

And even the devil can’t deny,

The small goodness,

Hidden in the dirt,

That makes him cry out,

God, damn you!

Some of them are worth saving!
