《The Fairest (Book #1)》36: The Divine Six

Mageia waited to be acknowledged as the newly transformed Sacreds studied her from head to toe with scrutiny and pure annoyance. They exchanged dark glares amongst themselves as if they haven't seen one another in a while and didn't like this untimely reunion. The warm breeze of the Serene subsided and left a residue of chill in the air. Mageia held her breath, sensing what had happen to the Sacreds but didn't want to acknowledge it.

"Who in the hell are you?" Madeena said, voice magnifying like a deep echo. The hatred and cruelty in her voice pressed heavy on Mageia's heart.

"Um...Mageia," she said.

"Another Fairest," Rasni scold with just as much malice. Mageia shivered.

"Uh..." she said.

"I don't know whether to be joyous or disappointed," Nabea said in a distant tone, voice also vibrating into the air.

"Well, I am excited," Dana said her present frown stretching into a kind smile. "Hello little girl. I am Danala and I thank you very much for this youthful form. I feel alive yet again."

"Danala?" Mageia said then stated the obvious which she couldn't fully accept. "You all are the Divine Six?"

"The girl knows nothing...as usual on how they come," Madeena said.

"I was in the middle of something," Rasni said.

"Weren't we all," Nabea said.

Mageia just stared at them, waiting for someone to explain what happened to the Sacreds. She caught eyes with Don's red ones, and he averted them to the grass like a shy little boy who wish not to be addressed.

"What happened to the Sacreds?"

"We merged with them," Danala said. "This happens only in the first Visit of a Fairest. We take the forms of anyone who died around the time of the Visit."

"But... what happened to them?"

"They're inside of us," Danala said. "Our souls have merged."

"Why is it that no Fairests bothered to write this shit down so when a new one comes, we wouldn't have to reiterate?" Madeena or rather Mesori said with a scowl.

"Didn't we get rid of the last one?" Rasni or Rasaal said to Mesori.

"He disappeared, the bastard. Apparently, entrapping the Ordained did nothing to stop the birth of another Fairest," she said as if Mageia wasn't here listening.

"Wait what is the Ordained? Will any of you tell me what is going on?" Mageia said. "It has been two centuries since the Vanished King and any communication with um... you all. So, what am I supposed to do?"

The Divines exchanged glances until Mesori and Rasaal burst out laughing. Danala, Nabea and Sadon who Mageia assumed were Naphri and Sakon now joined them. The laughter rose high into the sky, causing the stars to warp and shift. Thunder erupted from the six far directions, only to reveal winged creatures slowly approaching.

"Are those Sinthani? What is so funny?" Mageia said growing agitated. But the gods continued to laugh. Then Mesori and Rasaal began to spit insults at the other gods creating a nasty argument that did not involve Mageia.

Mageia.

Mageia gasped from the loud voice in her head. Instantly, her new senses told her where it was coming from and who. She caught eyes with Don. No Dawnis. He stared at her from the corner of his eyes with a gentle smile.

Do not be afraid, he said. I wish we could've met on different circumstances.

Why are you talking to me like this? She said.

I am the only god that can do this. Hamino gave me this power because my heart is the purest.

Is? Mageia said giving him a confused look.

His eyes averted to the floor like an embarrassed child. And yet, the energy radiating from the god of death felt sweet and pure and just. He glanced at Mesori on his left, seething her teeth at him and flinched. The most feared god of all the realm flinched!

What is going on Don?

Don tells me you have a good heart. That you can be trusted.

Okay...

No one here can be trusted, accept me. I am the only god closest in power to the Fairest.

What do you mean?"

It is in my nature to be fair when it comes to life and death and judgement. I see right and I see wrong, although sometimes I need assistance from the Ordained when we must wait for the next Fairest to come of age.

The Ordained?

The Spirits of the Fairests of Old. They were planning to restore the Serene with Tiivon Seviine, but they were captured by Mesori and Rasaal and held within the Oracle. Then later, Tiivon disappeared, but I can sense he's still alive and well, somewhere on Valeera.

And you can't find him on your own?

A Fairest has the power to conceal themselves from the gods when must until they become an Ordained. But a Fairest cannot leave the Serene unmonitored for too long. Magic and power becomes unbalanced. A war has broken free amongst us these past two centuries. So, it is too dangerous for you right now. So, train with what magic you've awakened tonight.

How?

Communicate with it. Be confident. Trust your heart because your heart is magic. You are magic. Seek the amethyst stone which the Ordained had hidden somewhere on Valeera and it should reveal Tiivon to receive the rest of your power in your first Ascension.

Ascension? This isn't an Ascension?

No. Coming here in spirit form is simply a Visit. An Ascension is when you enter the Serene in your physical form, but it is good to do so with a Fairest or an Ordained. Especially, now when the Serene is in chaos. I must warn you Mageia Seviine. Do not Visit here for any reason. The unbalanced magic can portal you in random places, especially when you're inexperienced. Also do not die again. You've lost two of your lives thus far.

How many do I have? She said shocked by this information.

Five. Use your deaths wisely, he said with faint humor.

Dawnis, you called me Seviine. That's not my surname.

Yes, it is, daughter of Prince Egar and Princess Valasia Seviine.

Mageia never heard those names before, but it sparked her curiosity. Her mom did mention plenty of times how they had to change their names. But she never disclosed their real ones.

"I'm a Seviine..." she said, and her words concerning royalty disappeared into the air.

I assume, the Starliin has been sealed shut for safety of those on Valeera by Tiivon. So, we cannot see what is occurring on Valeera, and most prayers we try and hear but cannot fully answer.

Really? That is terrible. She said now seeing why Ardania felt lost and forsaken. Can I tell anyone about this Visit?

You can tell anyone your heart trusts. But I must warn you. Never trust a Komali.

Mageia thought deep for a second. I don't think I know any Komali's...

Good. Their blood births nothing but trouble and betrayal, yet they always find themselves crossing with Fairests thanks to the Dark Gods.

Dawnis, I don't want to be a Fairest.

Dawnis glanced at her and nodded. It's okay to feel that way.

I don't want this. Can you take it away? Mageia said feeling panicked.

It is disrespectful to give back a gift, he joked, but she wasn't joking. She was serious.

I don't want this gift. I want to be normal.

Magic has a mind of its own, did you know that? He said as if ignoring her desire or rather panic.

No...

Magic is a spirit, unbiased and pure. It knows hearts more than any god or an Ordained could know. But it is easy to obtain and too addictive to let go. But for a Fairests, you are born with it and can never let it go until the next Fairest.

Great, Mageia said breathing hard with exhaustion.

Trust yourself, Mageia. That's all you can do right now.

Thunder shook her from their mental conversation. The colorful stormy clouds were closer now across the grassy sea. And the sinthani of the various gods could be seen holding weapons in their hands. Lightning bolts shot across the sky, even above Mageia. She jumped and flinched wishing to leave this place. The Divines were now arguing, flinging their arms in the air, working invisible magic. But witnessing the terror arriving from six directions, Mageia could feel their power strengthening.

"What are they doing?" she said to Dawnis.

We're coming, he said turning with great calmness towards his red cloud.

Those two words sent spikes up her spine. "What do you mean, you're coming?" she shouted above the noise.

We are in spirit form, Dawnis said as his cloud entered his body peacefully, unlike the other gods.

The ground quaked beneath her feet as Mesori screamed at her with such malice, Mageia's knees trembled. Then something terribly amazing happened. The Divines began to grow in height as clouds of magic seeped into their bodies. Rasaal unsheathed his sword and took a step forward, causing the barrier to wiggle and thin out.

Um... Dawnis. How am I supposed to leave?

Allow me to wake you, my Fairest, he said.

"I think you need to hurry," she shouted.

"Don't worry Fairest, I will protect you," Danala said as the grass around her feet wiggled alive and began to spring up to her fingers.

The sound of gushing water arose from the sky and when Mageia glanced up, she felt a rain droplet on her cheek. She looked towards Sakon whose hand motions now formed clots of water. The balls rotated and floated up into the air, breaking the barrier. Sharp pains slithered up and down Mageia's arms. The veins weren't purple anymore, but rather various colors of the gods. The energy of the gods rampaged through her, snatching and yanking magic from her body.

"It hurts," she screamed to no one in particular.

Keep breathing. I am coming to wake you, Dawnis said, his voice calm and assuring that it only irritated her patience.

"Hurry," she shouted dropping to one knee.

"I got her, my love," Rasaal bellowed stepping closer and swiping his sword at Mageia. Mesori laughed and cheered him on.

Mageia crumbled, clinging on her arms that felt like they were being pulled from their sockets. Slowly. Mercilessly. Painfully.

Then fire red as blood erupted around Dawnis in silent waves. Mageia's heart thumped wild in her chest. No! No more fire! She screamed at Dawnis, recalling the pain of being burnt alive.

Keep breathing. You will wake up and all of this would feel like a dream, Dawnis said.

The fiery god calmly aimed an open palm at her, and within seconds a ball of fire burst through his barrier as if it were made of paper. And just as the ball of fire met her spirit form, Mageia closed her eyes, and everything went dark.
