《[Royal Road Community Magazine]》Death of a Star
Advertisement
The date is 4/15 in the year 31014. Our mission is to collect data from the Star system Sol. A star is exhibiting strange flares. Let it be recorded that this is my first mission outside of my home system. In the crew are:
Captain - Leif Eriks. Novice, Active Practice.
I am the captain of the ship; Creon, A 2nd class Cyborg, base; human. Graduated top of my class and successfully ran three previous data collection missions within my home system. I am moderately experienced for a moderate to low danger mission to an abandoned system.
Navigator - A.N.IM.US Veteran, Retired.
A.N.IM.US is the navigator onboard. A retired navigation A.I. The ship is fitted with several holographic points and wireless comms for A.N.IM.US to use. It makes me slightly uncomfortable, but our privacy policies allow us to turn off certain points when we feel indecent. However, our mechanic turns them back on as an immature attempt at humor.
Pilot - Minali Ro’Nan. Novice, Active Practice.
Minali is the onboard pilot. Home system is aquatic and the ship’s default gravity is set low in accordance to her needs. All items without substantial weight float. I find this highly humorous, but our chemist does not. Minali has the most experience of all our novice crew members, with thirteen piloting missions in her home system and one through a neighboring system.
Physician - Dr. Echo Blackwell. Veteran, Active Practice.
Dr. Blackwell is our on board medical professional and tutor to the Chemist. A class 3 Cyborg, base; Caridia. Dr. Blackwell is upon our ship because of the conditions of their parole. Their crime is yet unknown, but as it does not pertain to our mission, it will be ignored. Beneath their black physician’s robes, they possess six limbs and are incredibly adept at sutures and limb replacements.

Chemist - Dr. Katida Mariana. Novice, Active Practice.
Dr. Mariana is the onboard chemist and apprentice physician. Another aquatic based race, however Dr. Mariana is more reptilian, unlike the jellyfish like pilot. In accordance with her needs, the ships default temperatures are raised to a warmer climate. Dr. Mariana has worked two prior missions but has most of her experience in laboratory settings. She is the most inexperienced of the crew.
Mechanic - Graham ‘Lucky’ Daedalus. Novice. Active Practice.
Graham is our mechanic. He sees to our ship and also takes on many of the janitorial responsibilities. He has the closest relations with A.N.IM.US. Graham has worked on governmental and military ships and has built a full sized cruiser from scrap between seven missions within his home system.
In the brief month we’ve traveled, I have made it a point to introduce myself and spend time with my crew. Starting with Graham. His identification chip and patches all read; Lucky. Which I find interesting. First chance I got, I spoke to him about this.
Upon my first introduction at launch, I assumed Graham was a Cyborg of unknown class. However, his data collective says otherwise. It should be said that Graham resembles both myself and Dr. Blackwell in appearance. He wears an alloy outer suit. The helmet is fit with a screen that emotes for him with lights. Occasionally, he changes the colors of the lights in accordance with his mood.
His limbs appeared to be mechanical in nature. A slightly worn alloy in the same material of the bulk of his suit. Though instead of charcoal gray, his limbs are in the color of industrial silver. He wears protective padding on his knees and shoulders. Obviously to protect his joints from the work he does.
I spoke to Graham in the repair-supply bay. I found him tinkering with something I couldn’t identify. After our introduction, I asked Graham if he was a Cyborg and of what class. It surprised me to be informed that Graham’s metal suit shelters a Triru. A race that comes from a very inhospitable planet. I know little about it but I have made a note to research it at the earliest convenience. From what Graham has said, it is a planet that doesn’t see much starlight because of heavy atmospheric clouds. The Triru have evolved to see in complete darkness. This leaves Graham incredibly light sensitive.

I offered to make accommodations for this but Graham indicated his helmet already does. As well as allowing him to breathe. The Triru don’t breathe the same mix of oxygen that is common in populated areas. But his suit remixes the air into something breathable for him. So long as he remembers to charge his canisters, he gets by as we all do. He says it is fairly common to be mistaken for a Cyborg.
I asked him about his nickname. He is very proud of it, referring to himself as ‘a Cinderella story’. He built his first suit by himself and stowed away on an export ship. Pirates attacked the ship. He was taken hostage and received the bulk of his mechanical knowledge. Upon rescue by the Galactic Federation, his talent was allowed to thrive in the Mechanicum Institutional. In the Institute his peers started referring to him as Lucky and the name has stuck. He is also top of his class and a few years my senior.
I find his constantly changing mask and high energy very comforting and enjoyable. Though his speech pattern is rushed and spoken through a respirator. He is very difficult to understand when excited.
He spoke to me in a very hasty and garbled way, with the lights in his helmet flashing rapidly. I did not know what I agreed to, but he recently has given me a covering for my mechanical face. It is white and resembles the face of a human skull. I wear it proudly and seeing it in reflections makes my circuits run hot with pride.

Isekai Dungeoncrawl - Am Ende mit meinem Latein
I have always thought I would live out my life without any major surprises. You know, work on the estates of my parents, serve my time as a soldier, become a senator, a praetor, maybe a consul in time. I thought I will live the life that a Roman noble of my standing can count on. But this was not to be. My previously simple life got suddenly very complicated. I was taken from my home, and now I have to live in a world where no one speaks Latin, no one prays to my gods, and no one knows what the heck garum is. Before, I thought I had all the answers, but now only questions remain. Will I survive? Will I find my way back home? Will I ever be able to get the savage bastards living here to adopt the great accomplishments of Roman civilisation? Not even the gods know the answers. One thing is for sure: should I ever get home again; I will never set a foot outside of my estate without a healthy stockpile of garum. The cover is from Peter Paul Rubens' "The Death of Publius Decius Mus" This webnovel is partially based on a DnD campaign where a party of three players played the adventures The Sunless Citadel, The Forge of Fury and The Witches of Westwater.

Cast Under Ellitis
Ellitis, a world of sword and magic. Massive in size, with most of its surface unexplored. Where dragons and spirits dwell amongst men and demi-humans, where gods and devils alike barter with mortals and immortals. Beautiful as it might seem, mystical even, Ellitis is not a world for the frail. It is a place where the strong prey upon the weak, and where the weak struggle with every fiber of their being to overthrow the strong. It is here, in an unsuspecting corner of this world, that an unfortunate soul was born an orphan by the mischief of beings untold. Eliot Wyon, formerly known as Eliot Alderman, was just a mediocre engineering student in his past life. Perhaps without any help, this life of his will be just as boring as his last. But throw in an impish ex-goddess to help him along. Maybe, just maybe, he could make this life a bit more interesting. ----------------------------------------**Author's Note**---------------------------------------- Hello Everyone, I am Vi, Cat Vi. This is my first attempt at writing a story. I am a complete beginner at this. The closest thing to an organized story I’ve ever written is essay reports back in high school. There might be syntax errors and weird language all over the place. So, apologies in advance. I’ll be trying my best to make this story as interesting as possible, and with your feedback I am sure I can make something nice out of it. Constructive criticism is appreciated. And you are welcome to comment any errors you might notice. I’ll try to fix them up as soon as I can. For now, I don’t have a schedule. But if the story gets traction, I will try to work something out. **Cover Image Drawn by me.
