Part 8: New Jurisdiction, Same Problems

I started at my office computer screen for what seems like forever. There was a bug on my tranquilizer watch. I found the corrupted code that was causing it to fire over one shot when you pressed the button, now my obstacle was finding out why my code isn't running.

"If this doesn't work, then I am giving up for the day." I said to myself as deleted a block and replaced it with another line. When I ran my code, it was successful, and the watch was fully functional.

Perfect now, it's time to test it. Putting the watch on, I clicked one button on the side of the watch face. There was phew sound and I could see something shoot out from the watch. I am walking over to the wall I was aiming at. I saw the thin needle sticking out of the drywall perfectly perpendicular to the ground. Finally, I had a working prototype.

Before I could celebrate my office phone started came to life, it was Kalina. "Hey Kalina, you called at a great time. I finally finished my watch prototype."

"Oh yeah, that tranquillizer finally works. When you make it available to the other FBI agents, we're going have to give you an award plus a bonus."

Wait, I can get a bonus for doing this? I had never even considered that a possibility.

"Anyway, the reason for my calling is that I have a new case for you. I won't be joining you on this one, but I assigned you to work with agent Dickinson. This case will be outside of this jurisdiction, but that shouldn't be a problem since we have jurisdiction over the United States. You'll be able to work alongside local and state law enforcement." Kalina said.

"Oh, is this another regular case?" I said, looking through my email. I searched for Kalina's briefing on the case.

"Uh yeah, you could say that. I am going to send the briefing over soon. You better get going. It's about a 3-hour drive." Kalina said, hanging up the phone." Anytime Kalina said 'Uh', it usually meant that she was up to something, and it usually involved her scheming something.

Leaving my office, I walked over to Emily's office. I knocked on her door and Emily opened the door. She had a hoodie up and there was a pentagram on her forehead. Her eyeliner streaked down from her face as if she were crying. From head to toe, she was covered in black. She wore a silver spiked chocker, and a sliver of spiked wristbands on each wrist. "Hello, Morningstar. Are you ready to go on our case?"

"Ready as I'll ever be, lady death, but you need to scrub off that pentagram on your forehead first." I said, poking her in the forehead.

Emily put both her hands on her forehead and frowned. "But why? It goes with my outfit and it's not against the dress code." Emily pouted.

"My last name literally is a reference to the devil. When we introduce ourselves, it doesn't matter if we show them our badges. They are going to think I'm a cult leader and my servant."

"You're just being dramatic." Emily said, then she walked over to her desk and opened a drawer. "Fine, I will wash it off, but you're not stopping me from wearing my pentagram necklace." She held up a pentagram necklace. The pendant sparkled in the light as it spun.

"Whatever, just meet me in the car." I said, walking away from her office.

I walked back to my office to gather some equipment I would need for the case. Shut down my laptop and put it inside my briefcase. I checked the power on my detective glasses. They were at 50%, I should bring the charger for it and charge it in the car before we get to the station. Glancing over at my watch prototype, maybe I would get the opportunity to test it in the field. I grabbed it with the charger and shoved it in my bag.

When I reached the car in the parking garage, Emily stood in front of it with a freshly clean forehead. "I'm nobody! Who are you?" she screamed, pointing at me. "Are you — Nobody—too? Then there's a pair of us!"

"Are you quoting that poet again?" I said, walking to the driver's side of the car and getting in.

Emily got in on the passenger and whispered, "Don't tell! They'd advertise—you know!"

Starting the car and pulling off to the parking garage exit. "Oh no, whatever shall we do if it were to get out?" I said, pulling, turning onto the road.

"How dreary—to be—Somebody! How public—like a frog—To tell one's name—the livelong June—to an admiring Bog." Emily said, she then closed a fist Infront of her face "and scene."

"You're not going to do this the entire car ride, are you?" I said. Looking over at the GPS, we won't be there for another 3 hours.

"Of course I am. I was hoping to practice. Rick is so much better at doing quotes." Emily giggled. "When we get back, we're going to have a competition. Would you want to be the judge?"

"Hopefully not. You guys have a weird way of having fun." I said, pulling onto the highway.

"Fine, we will have all the fun by ourselves, but you are more than welcome to join!" Emily said. Then she closed her eyes then quickly opened them extending out her arm in front of her "'Hope' is the thing of feathers- that perch in the soul—and sings with the tune without the words—and never stops—at all–..."

This is going to be a long car ride.
