This person wants to move on from a guy they like.

Hello,

I completely understand wanting to avoid heartbreak. I can also understand wanting to protect his feelings. But it sounds to me like the issue comes with an overall lack of and subsequent need to be in control. In order to control the situation, you feel the need to cut it off so it can't get out of your control. Ultimately, dear, this isn't going to make you feel better.

In my humble opinion, I think you should just let things be. Hang out with him. Be friends with him. You don't have to seek out anything, and you in no way have to progress to something you're not comfortable with right now. But you don't have to try and sever your feelings for him. Even if you tried, there is no foolproof way, nor a quick way to end those feelings if they've already begun to grow. Honestly, hun, your best bet is to talk to him about your feelings and fears, tell him what you want (be it staying friends, whatever), and just let things be as they are. You care about each other. That doesn't have to mean you date each other.

If you really want to try severing the relationship, distance will be your easiest option. I don't think this should be something you do unprompted or undiscussed though. Friends are important in life, and completely ending the relationship wouldn't be beneficial.
