FIRST PERSON WOO!! LET ME KNOW HOW IT IS!!
😅
if you haven't read "My Reason to Die" or "What I Decided to Die For" on webtoon/totally legal sites, you really should... Gyeol makes me feel some type of way.... ;)
Setting: Modern day Tokyo, you're 17.
Content: Fluff
Match point.
I take a deep breath to gain composure. I must ace this serve down the middle, right on the line. So the crowd will go wild, and it will be my 3rd tournament win in a row. This is my biggest tournament yet.
I toss the ball a little higher than expected, but I'll be jumping into my serve anyways. I pivot my right foot towards my left and use the momentum to shoot my arm like a whip.
Hah! That was the perfect hit. It felt smooth and powerful on my racquet. The sound of the ball against my racquet soothed the pressure in my ears.
I must recover because I jumped. I have to get back behind the baseline before my next hit!
My right foot reaches the ground first. I wasn't supposed to do that..?
*CRACK*
HOLY SH-
~~~~
I wake up facing the ceiling. I feel the heavy weight of my right leg. What happened to me?
"Y/N, do you know where you are?" a man in a white coat asks me. Well, isn't it obvious?
"A hospital," I reply.
The doctor nods and asks, "Do you have any idea why?"
That's when the jolt of pain shoots through my right ankle. I look down to see a thick cast on my leg.
"My ankle...!"
Tears start to blur my vision. I was so close to winning that point! Because of my injury, I had to withdraw last second and now my winning streak is over. My number 1 rank will not drop, but this just makes me so mad.
Mom looks at me like I'm on the verge of death, "Oh, Y/N! You fainted after breaking your ankle! It's funny... you were more concerned about your loss than your injury, so you fainted after the chair umpire gave the win to your opponent."
I was sweeping her, too! I was winning 6-2 and 5-3, but I just had to get injured, huh?
"I need to get a drink outside..." I tell mom, and I limp away on these stupid crutches.
I reach the vending machine outside. Aha! They have coffee jelly milk tea! I buy a can and sit on a bench in the shade, lost in my thoughts.
Why couldn't I just practice serving more before the game? I shut my eyes, replaying the horrible moment in my mind.
"What are you in for?" someone asks me.
I open my eyes to find a random guy's face just inches away from me. I scoot back, saying, "You're treating me like we're in prison."
He leans back against the bench, and that's when I notice the bandages all around his face.
"Yikes..." I mutter.
"You should see my body. My face is nothing." He responds with a sly smile.
I look away and say, "W-why would I want to see your body?! I don't even know who you are!"
He shrugs and drinks from his can of coke like he didn't just make a disturbing suggestion.
I study him. The way his hair falls in front of his face because he has no way to style it here, and his eyes...
His eyes are so pretty. And the way that he looks at me...
Advertisement
Stop! His charms shouldn't phase me.
"What are you in for?" I turn to him and rest my head on my arm.
"A fight," he responds.
I examine his injuries. There's no way this was just from a fight. He had to be run over by a bus to be injured this badly.
"A fight? Did you fight a bull or something?" I ask.
He laughs a little, which makes my heart flutter for no reason.
"A bull is weaker than who I fought. So, what are you here for?" he responds.
I frown, "I broke my ankle right before winning my largest tournament of the year."
I can see him studying my eyes, my hair, and my lips.
"Oh, you're that tennis player. I've seen you play a couple times," he tells me nonchalantly, "You're pretty good."
I raise an eyebrow and make a joke, "Is that so? Maybe you're my bad luck charm, so don't watch me."
He tilts his head as he stares into my eyes and into my soul, "Does that mean I make you nervous?"
Because of that statement, I do get nervous. I look away and blush as my hair covers my face.
His hand brushes my hair behind my ear gently and he says, "My name is Jotaro, but you can call me Jojo."
I nudge his hand away with my own and reply, "Let's just stick to our actual names. I'm Y/N."
"I know." he responds, and I look at him in surprise. Well, that does make sense. If he's seen me play, he knows my name.
And with that, I finish my milk tea and get up to go to my room. I would've been discharged from the hospital already, but I fainted for no apparent reason so I have to stay for another day.
Because of the thick cast on my foot, the ground is uneven and I lose my balance. I stumble, but I'm caught by Jotaro.
This is so embarrassing...
Once again, I'm met with the same vibrant hue of green. A deep green. Not emerald green, but more like the Atlantic Oce—
"Are you going to get off of me?"
I panic and get up, saying "Yes, I'm sorry! I was just surprised you caught me."
Because I'm the clumsiest person on Earth, I trip over myself and fall backwards. He catches me once again, and I swear his lips almost touched mine.
This guy gets on my nerves, but kind of in a good way...?
"I see that you're falling for me already?" he teases. What a corny pickup line!
I grit my teeth, "Nope. Thank you, but I have to go now."
He offers to walk me to my room, and it's not like I can refuse. I walk as slow as a turtle because of my cast and crutches.
When we get to my room, my mom and my doctor aren't there, so I lay down in bed with Jotaro's help and rest.
"Thanks..." I mutter shyly. This guy definitely almost has me under his stupid delinquent spell.
He leans down to whisper in my ear with a small smile, "Get better soon so I can watch you play again."
I feel better already. To know that there's someone out there that supports me is enough to make me happy. I smile at him very widely because of that, and I wish I didn't. I just met him, but he already makes me blush whenever he's close to me.
Advertisement
He walks out of the room and I'm left alone. My face feels awfully cold, and I realize why. My cheeks have been burnt up ever since I met that guy.
The tension between us makes me so flustered that's it's frustrating. Why does he make me feel this way?
It's whatever, because as soon as I leave the hospital, I'll never see him again.
~~~~
I dreaded this day. Summer break ended, and it's the first day of my final year in high school. It sucks that I have to go through it with a broken ankle.
I show up to school an hour early even though I no longer have to. The athletes of my school always do laps on the track and do group stretches in the morning, and I just wanted to feel included.
I sit on the bleachers and sigh. I wish I could be on that track and be hitting tennis balls against the wall.
BF/N runs over to me, asking me if I've seen the new transfer student.
"You haven't?" they ask, "He's so hot! He's actually over there! See? Definitely out of my league!"
I look at where they pointed, and I see that boy talking to a teacher. He has a hat on with a curl sticking out. Cute...
Just then, he spots me. Maybe he felt my eyes burning into his back. Even from far away, those eyes could never be mistaken.
I gasp at my discovery and I attempt to rush into the school.
"W-Wait! Where are you going, Y/N?" BF/N yells at me.
"Th-That's not my name!" I yell back in panic and limp my way hastily behind the school.
I hear footsteps as I turn the corner. I hope BF/N didn't run after me!
All of a sudden, an arm blocks my way and I freeze. The person that ran after me wasn't BF/N.
It was the guy from the hospital.
He towers over me, leaving me defenceless as he examines me.
"Who are you?" I ask angrily. I'm playing dumb, but I'm more flustered at that fact that he has me pinned against the wall.
He gives me the same sly smile, as if he's about to say something suggestive once again, "Really, Y/N?"
"Really, Jotaro?" I mock him. I blew my cover, but he already knew it was me.
I think that made him mad, because he leaned closer to my face with his eyebrows furrowed.
I bite my lip. It's a habit when I'm in a pressuring situation.
He notices that, and he brushes his thumb over my bottom lip, releasing it from the grasp of my front teeth. I allow him, but I didn't want him to. Now my face is probably as red as a tomato.
"You should stop doing that," he says, "You'll hurt yourself again."
"I-I didn't hurt myself on purpose..." I reply. He really takes me for a fool.
I hate the fact that I'm strong and dominant on the court but I'm so weak in the knees around this guy... (nervous, not like THAT)
"Y/N? Y/N! Where did you go?" BF/N's distant voice calls out to me.
I push Jotaro away from me as I hear them turn the corner. Their jaw drops when they see us behind the school, awfully close.
"Y/N!~ You never told me he was your boyfriend!" they beam.
Boyfriend? This guy isn't even my friend!
"We're not even friends, BF/N! Don't tell anyone this happened, please?" I beg.
"Okay," they agree, "But why were you two so close?"
How do I respond to that? 'Oh, he just loves getting in my face to see me flustered, no worries!' Absolutely not. I'm still thinking of what to say...
"I'm hitting on her," Jotaro responds bluntly.
BF/N looks dumbfounded, and I want to laugh at their facial expression.
Suddenly, BF/N gets up in Jotaro's face, not afraid of his extreme height.
"Don't think that because you're good-looking you can toy with her heart. Do you know who she is? She's Tokyo's #1 in girl's tennis, and she's about to go pro in the women's league! So if you mess her up, I will murder you."
My jaw drops open, and I swear I see sweat on Jotaro's forehead. BF/N was menacing when they wanted to be, and even I was scared of them.
"I-I understand..." Jotaro stutters.
He's... scared of BF/N?
Haha! I burst out laughing at the irony. They both look at me like I'm crazy.
"Haha!" I laugh, "You're scared of them! Hah... how cute...!"
They both stare at me in shock and I cover my mouth. Why did I have to say that it was cute?!
"You think I'm cute?" Jotaro instigates.
I pause, look them both in the eyes, and try to run away despite my ankle being in so much pain. Jotaro runs in front of me again, saying, "Stop it, Y/N. You're putting yourself in more pain. I want to watch you play, remember?"
I nod in defeat and limp to my class with the help of my crutches and friends.
After school, I can't help but watch the rest of the tennis team practice on the courts beside the school. I sit on a bench inside the fenced area and watched the team in friendly jealousy. They're not necessarily my team mates because I play singles during tennis season, but we're all part of the tennis club.
"Y/N, do you want to rally a little? You don't have to move, I'll hit them right to you," my classmate, Kei, asks.
I beam at him, "Really? Oh, thank you so much! I really missed playing."
I get his extra racquet and drop the ball. With perfect timing, I'm able to start a rally with a clean topspin swing.
He hits it back to me at a regular speed, and we rally for 5 minutes before I decide to get off to rest my leg.
"Are you okay, Y/N? How is your ankle? I hope I didn't make it worse by inviting you to play," he worries.
I dismiss his worries, saying, "No, I'm fine. Thanks for letting me play for a little. It really made me happy."
"No problem!" he responds and gets back to his hitting partner on his court.
I chug water from my water bottle, but I get startled by Jotaro.
"You kind of suck."
I felt the urge to spit all the water out onto his face, but I didn't.
"Maybe that's because I can't run!" I retort, clearly annoyed by his presence.
He pouts jokingly, "Did I make you mad? It was a joke. But, you looked really happy. Even if you could only move your arm, I know that's what mattered most to you."
I smile at the ground because what he said was true, "You're right. Tennis is popular retirement sport. It's timeless, and all you need is your dominant arm just to enjoy the game."
I bet he can tell how happy I am to talk about the sport that runs my life, and he smiles back at me.
"So, what about you?" I ask him, "Do you play any sports? Or is there anything you're passionate about?"
"Marine biology," he responds, "I don't play any sports." (Star totally plays baseball though)
"You? Marine biology? I guess I like my men smart," I flirt with him slightly, but I know that I shouldn't. He makes me give into my temptations.
He tilts his head in question, "You're not into athletes?"
"I mean, I am, but I want someone to be at my games if they're not at their own, if that makes sense. It sounds super selfish, but I want someone to be there for me in the stands," I reply, "Not busy at practice every day like usual."
"I'm usually free," he says, implying that he should be a candidate for my boyfriend search.
This time, I have to make him flustered. To show him that it's not nice to make someone embarrassed all the time. I lean closer to him, reaching for his face. He seemed so prepared for it that it was funny. Then, I take his hat and put it on my head, "I'll try to get better soon, then. So don't make me want to run from you."
His hat on my head must have triggered something for him, and blood rushed to his cheeks after seeing me. "It's your fault that you run from me, I'm just trying to get closer to you."
"I get it, Jotaro. You want to kiss me already," I shrug jokingly, "But you have to get to know me first."
"...Fine. Let me walk you home."
He didn't deny wanting to kiss me...?
~~~
After a blissful few months, I finally got my cast off and started physical therapy. It was hard. It was like I forgot how to move my ankle and foot, and I was taught how to use it again. I also became closer to Jotaro, but he remained the same mysterious boy throughout. His presence was enough for us to form a bond, but he always hit on me and touched my face as he pleased. I hate saying this, but I don't mind him touching my face and all because I trust him not to try anything weird. It's safe to say that I like him, but I'm not too sure about him. He did get pretty jealous of Kei recently...
I was practicing with Kei again. He was the most supportive of me and was an excellent hitting partner. A fact I left out is that he's my ex-boyfriend. However, he told me that he's into guys now. I obviously respected that, and we ended on very good terms. It made me sad that he could barely watch my most important matches because he was engulfed in his own.
I was sitting on a court bench with Jotaro during a break, my ankle still in a stiff pain. He was clearly staring down Kei, who smiled at us and continued to practice his serves.
I was eating a popsicle to cool off from the heat when Jotaro asked me, "Who is he to you? You two seem very close."
I shrug it off because of my situation with Kei. It really was nothing personal. He figured out who he is, and I'm proud and happy for him.
I take a bite of my popsicle and reply, "Hm? Oh, yeah. He's my ex-boyfriend."
I can see the sudden shock on his face, and it brings me satisfaction. Yes, Jotaro Kujo... get jealous of a statement I said so calmly without context. Oh my, I must sound like the devil himself.
"Your ex, huh? He still likes you, doesn't he? That's why he always offers to practice with you." Jotaro says with a colder tone. I smile because it's funny to see him get jealous over my friendship with Kei.
"That's where you're wrong, Kujo. You see his hitting partner? The athletic nerd with freckles? That's his boyfriend." I explain. "We broke up because he realized that he's gay."
He opened his mouth slightly in surprise. "Oh... my bad."
~~~
Spring was rolling by, and I got back to normal practices. It was still a little tough, but the more I played, the more my rhythm came back. Soon, I would be playing in a Tokyo high school tournament, not a regular tournament with top players from around the country.
I signed myself up for the tournament as I high-fived BF/N and celebrated my recovery.
When I arrived at school the morning I fully recovered, I saw Jotaro waiting for me by the track.
"Hey, what brings you here so early? You rarely come in the morning."
I notice the Yonex tennis bag that's beside him. Did he want to play against me?
"Congratulations on your recovery, Y/N," he says with a warm expression. "I got this for you as a gift. I know you've worked so hard to get to where you are now."
Wow! It's so pretty! It's white with cherry blossoms scattered throughout the bag.
"Look inside," he tells me, and so I do.
I find Naomi Osaka's custom racquet in there, as well as a new can of tennis balls. I blush so heavily that I feel like I'm about to faint. I really could kiss this man right now.
(For reference, aren't these so cute! Naomi Osaka is my favourite tennis player
"You really didn't have to..." I say in awe. This was a really expensive gift.
I end up flinging myself into his arms, hugging him tight. "Thank you so, so much. I can't wait to use these in-game."
He brushes the back of his hand against my cheek, and my heart flutters, "Are we close now?" he asks.
That was definitely his way of asking to kiss me, so I pat his cheek and respond, "Not enough."
He frowns and I take my gifts to my locker, examining the beautiful racquet.
My tournament is in a week. I have to get better.
~~~
You've got to be kidding me.
A tiebreak set? In the finals? How could I choke so badly?
I serve first. Deep breath in, big exhale out. I toss the ball and ready my racquet for the big swing.
Now!
I release and whip the ball right down the line. Ace!
Just a few more of these, I got this.
~~~
My last serve. Match point. I'm sweaty and tired out, but I must continue. I toss the ball up in the air. This has to land on the outer line for an ace. I bend my knees, ready to use the momentum to whip the ball at an untraceable speed, and I do...
But it goes into the net.
Fault!
It's okay, there's a second serve. Just breathe. In, out. Toss it high, hit it in. That's all I have to do. Get it in the box.
