"Look who fell asleep with Romania again." Jimmy opened his eyes slowly as he looked around the room. The TV was on with a rerun of an old show that he never heard of with the remote on the arm of the couch next to him. That was the only glow in the room beside the kitchen's warm glow. Chris leaned against the entrance that separated the kitchen from the living room. He had an oversized brown shirt with old worn gray sweatpants with no socks on. He looked down at the peacefully sleeping infant on his chest. A blanket lay on her back with his hand on top as a simple floral onesie accompanied her. He glanced up at Chris and groaned.
"I need to stop this but I can't." Jimmy told him, staring at the man. Chris flipped his hair over and walked over to Jimmy. He brushed the greasy hair from his forehead and kissed it, before plopping down next to him.
"What time is it?" Jimmy asked as he laid his wrapped his other arm around Chris's shoulders. He hummed and laid his head on his shoulder, nuzzling it in the crook of his neck. He stared at his daughter, smiling softly at the little creature they made together.
"It's almost 2 in the morning." Chris told him, glancing up at the TV. He took his head off his shoulder and played with the hand that rested on his shoulder while blankly staring at the TV. This was the first time since Romania was born that she slept through the night. It was hard to schedule their routine to match hers, but after the second-month mark, things became easier. He glanced over at the tired man and felt sorry for him. Deep dark under-eye bags started to look normal, hot in Chris's opinion, with him after his seventh month of pregnancy. Many all-nighters were pulled together when the nights were rough where the dark under-eye bags were made. Jimmy had left behind his care on how he looked, letting his hair and bread grow out. His hair curled up with his back hair tickling the back of his ears. His bread looked disheveled and ungroomed.

"You're staring." Chris snapped out of it and stared into the eyes of his lover. He leaned forward and kissed him, feeling Jimmy smile into it. Chris felt his chap lips against his but he didn't care. They pulled apart and stared down at Romania. Chris looked over at the hand that was still resting on his shoulder and noticed something.
He got up quickly and rushed to the bedroom, leaving Jimmy questioning what was wrong. Chris searched through his drawers before finding a box. He picked it up and rushed out, going back over. He has been waiting to do it for so long, but with the unexpected life curve balls being thrown at them, he never found the perfect chance. Sure it wasn't the romantic moment that he planned but he wanted to ask it. He wanted it to happen badly.
Chris appeared in front of Jimmy and took a deep breath before going down on one knee. He saw Jimmy jolt forward, starling Romania slightly. Jimmy looked down at her and watched her to make sure she fell asleep before looking at Chris.
"Jimmy, I've been wanting to do this for so long, you don't know. The thought of marriage only became more on my mind when we had Romania. I don't want to ever leave you or her, so why don't I seal the deal? Jimmy, will you marry me?" Jimmy bristled into tears as he nodded, giving Chris his left hand. Chris accepted it and placed the ring on it before plopping down next to him and kissing him fully ok the mouth.
"Sorry it wasn't romantic but I just couldn't wait any longer." Chris told him as they broke apart. "I promise I'll redo it more romantically." Jimmy shook his head as he kissed him again.

"That was the most romantic thing ever, Chris. I would rather have a proposal at three a.m. with our daughter sleeping peacefully on me while we are in our pj's than a romantic scene. I love you." Chris grabbed his cheeks before kissing him again. He felt happy for this was the past way to spend a night. They withdrew from each other to breathe before Jimmy patted his knee. Chris nodded and fixed himself to lay his head on his thigh. Jimmy put his left hand in Chris's hair, giving him pet scratches. Chris stared up and over to look at Jimmy but Romania was blocking his view. He smiled though and looked up to the ceiling. His eyes became to drop as he was starting to get tired. He smiled before his eyes closed, the happiest he had ever been.

When Winnie was thirteen, her settlement taught her how to fire a rifle. Her school practiced drills in case raiders came, and the town grew crops in their greenhouse-adapted homes, which were the only places warm enough during the worldwide nuclear winter. The Lakiran empire invades—a corporate-born nation overseen by their corporate-born queen, Victoria Paladino. They ride silent planes whose repulsion field veered bullets away. Meanwhile, in post-war Nigeria, a streetwise teenager named Naema sees a different side of the empire. Between corruption and oppression, everyone lives in squaller. People fight over assembled food pastes. She too is told she has a unique flair, not by the empire, but by a fugitive woman who is the last vestige of an ancient witch coven, and she knows a dark secret about what the exemplars do to people like Winnie and Naema.
