Chapter Seven
||KIT||
†
I blinked my eyes open rapidly, squinting at the overhead lights and as I moved to sit upright a sharp pain ran down my back keeping me in bed.
A hospital bed.
I looked around the cold, sterile space I occupied. There was a bin next to the single bed and a thin partition that separated me from the other patients. I could hear coughing coming from the bed left of mine.
I liked hospitals, I always felt a weird vibe whenever I was in one especially since most of my earlier years were spent in hospitals as I'd been prone to bronchitis as a kid, but as I got older the less I got sick until it was all a distant memory.
Speaking of memories, flashbacks of last night were starting to creep up on me, and my palms began to sweat.
They were all dead, and I'd done part of the killing.
I sat up, ready to leave the bed when the door opened to reveal a short plump nurse with a cheery expression which instantly made me feel better. She checked my blood pressure and temperature before jotting the numbers down on her clipboard.
"Are you experiencing any pain?" She asked and I nodded, telling her where my back was hurting.
She jotted something again before smiling at me, "you have some visitors, I'll let you catch up while I get you something for the pain."
I got excited as she opened the door, letting my family in.
"Kitty!" The two little angels squealed, throwing themselves at me and I laughed pulling them onto my lap for a tight hug despite the pain in my back.
My foster brother Nick gave me a quick smile before going back to his phone.
Aww he cares!
Sara was looking down at me with a worried, yet relieved expression.
After answering a million questions and listening to them gush over the fact that I was okay, I was relieved to see the nurse enter the room once again.
"Well, you're good and ready to go."
She handed me a prescription for pain meds and I smiled and grabbed Sara's hand.
She looked so worried.
She placed a hand to my cheek looking into my brown eyes with her own before saying, "Oh mija, you're never leaving my sight again."
Darnit.
I frowned a bit but as she pulled me against her for a hug I smiled as I realised I would actually make it home. That's more than the others back at the cabin could say.

We arrived back at the house at three p.m. since after telling Sara I was starving, she'd driven us to the nearest restaurant to eat before we stopped at a nearby pharmacy to get the pills I needed.
The twins had fallen asleep on the way back and I tucked them in their bed with Sara waiting to speak with me by the door.
As I exited their room quietly she pulled me into a warm hug, sobbing lightly, "Mija, never scare me like that again."
I patted her back a little and she pulled away to look at my face, her own red and streaked with tears.
"What happened?" She asked, "the police, they said there was a-" she thought to herself for a second before settling on the Spanish when she couldn't remember the English word for slaughter, "-a matanza!"
I let out a light breath, searching for something to say that would get her to relax. I love Sara, but if she could keep me hostage in our house to protect me from harm I knew she would, and that just wasn't any way for a free spirit like me to live.
As I looked into her eyes though, the guilt was starting to eat at me again.
How could I tell her I'd done what I did? How would she react? A small part of me wanted to believe it'd all been just a stupid dream or nightmare but it was clearly as real as anything if the pain in my back was anything to go by.
She continued, "You and that boy were so lucky to get out alive! Oh I can only imagine what you must've been through mija-"
"Boy, what boy? Was it Mason?" I asked grabbing her shoulders.
One of the others survived?
She nodded a bit, "Yes I think that was his name-"
"Oh my gosh Mom, Mason's alive?!" I could hardly contain my shock.
Her eyebrows shot up and I felt my cheeks heat up a bit. I seldom called her mom because she found it odd and never really liked it. She only shrugged it off though and pulled me into another hug.
"You should get some more rest. Maybe tomorrow we can talk about all this, yes?"
I nodded and she ran a hand through her shoulder length brown hair before patting my arm and going to the twin's room to check on them. I sighed and went to my room closing the door behind me.

This entire situation was so surreal.
That guy from last night.
The memory of him was burned into my mind, that unsettling mask and the things he'd said. He was going to kill me. Why didn't he? He'd killed everyone else. Maybe he already thought I was dead when I blacked out?
He didn't appear to know about the diner killings so who had done that?
How did Mason get away?
I clutched at my neck to feel on my choker, something I did often when I was overwhelmed, but it wasn't there and I collapsed onto my bed with a deep sigh, staring up at the ceiling.
Through all the fuss I'd lost my most prized possession. What would Amy think? Just then the telephone rang and I groaned and rolled over to pick it up, placing it to my ear.
"Blair residence."
"Kit?! OH MY GO-"
I winced at the loud shouting on the other end, pulling the receiver from my ear for a moment before placing it back. "Amy calm down."
"Oh my fucking God are you okay? I heard what happened and-"
I bit the inside of my lip as she talked. Amy was my best friend, she knew me better than anyone and I knew she could keep a secret and that I could trust her but this situation was so extremely messed up I didn't think she'd understand.
"Are you listening?"
"Huh?" I snapped back into focus at the sound of he voice.
"You poor baby you're still shaken up aren't you? Don't worry I'm on my way over and I'm bringing chocolate."
I was about to object but stopped mid word when I heard her say chocolate.
"O-okay but-"
"Good it's settled. I'll see you in five."
She hung up and I blew out a breath before getting to my feet. I took two of the pain killers and then had a quick shower before getting dressed. I was doing a quick twist-out in my damp hair when Sara shouted up the stairs at me that Amy was coming up.
I held the door open and as she got to the top of the staircase and saw me she squealed and rushed over, throwing her arms around me and squeezing me ever so tightly. I didn't even complain about my aching back.
"I'm so happy you're okay!" She pulled away wiping tears from the corners of her eyes which made me tear up as well. I closed the door behind her and she dropped her stuff on my bed before handing me a box of chocolates.
"What happened to your phone?" she asked as I placed the box on my bedside table.
"Um, I don't really know. I think it's still at the cabin. I might get it back after the police come around later this week for questioning. They would've done that sooner but I was in the hospital. Or I could get it replaced, it was on its last leg anyway."
She sat looking at me silently and I bit my lip again feeling slightly awkward before she bursted into tears, "I'm so sorry Kit it's all my fault. I made you go and if anything horrible had happened to you I-"
"No no don't say that it wasn't your fault at all. How could you have known a killer was gonna show up and butcher everyone?" I joined her on the bed and wrapped my arms around her shoulders to console her, resting my head against hers. She giggled when my hair tickled her nose and offered to help me with my twist out.
"Did you say the killer was masked? So you actually saw him?" She asked once I was sitting between her legs on the floor while she sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers moving swiftly as she helped me with the loose twists.
I bit the inside of my lip again before nodding, "Well I saw him, yes."
Felt him too.
My cheeks were hot and I swallowed at the thought. Should I tell her?
Was I making a big mistake? I couldn't possibly tell her.
But she's my best friend. What better way to test her loyalty than by confessing my deepest darkest secret that could quite possibly land me in prison for life?
I turned to her, grabbing her hands while looking up into her grey eyes so she'd know I was being serious.
"Amy, what I'm about to tell you, you can never ever tell anyone else, no matter what. Do you understand?"
She stared at me wide eyed, her hands gripping mine tightly as she whispered.
"Oh Shit."

A Goblin's Blade (dropped)
He looked down the path, which was littered with many things. Things he found in abundance were such of violence, desire and gore while things he found in scarcity were such of love, friendship and glory. At the start of the path was a naive, green goblin while at the end of it... Well at the end of it stood him: the godslayer, the monster from the forest, the walking death... He had many names but none so that perfectly captured his image as well as the Mad King. Authors note: Edit: Trying to release a chapter per day, around 2-2.5k words each. An evolution story about a goblin. This is under lit-rpg but I'm focusing more on the plot/characters instead of the usual features of such stories such as the blue tables that take ages to make or the stat screens. In essence it's closer to high fantasy than lit-rpg. Much appreciated if you read the Prologue to see whether you like it or not. Cover image is "Evolution" taken from art done by WhoAmI01
