《Call Of Death》Chapter 40 : Behind The Coat

Detective Lee felt exhausted by everything that happened. He has been staring at the piece of paper and at the name written on it. He couldn't be mistaken, it's the same name he heard from his dreams. It wasn't just a simple name from the last victim, he knows there's something more. He sighed and leaned on the chair as he stare at Officer Chad's sleeping face. He remembered what happened. His partner's bloody face, the gun shot. He was so worried but now, he could say that he's relieved because everything went well.
"You're so silly, you know that? Taking a bullet for me?" Cameron was worried but he can't help himself from smiling.
From his childhood, no one had ever sacrifice something for him. No one has ever did something good for him, except for his adopted father. He never thought that this is how it feels to be saved by someone. Life has been cruel from his childhood, he didn't get to experience everything that a child should. He was barred, verboten to get out. He didn't get to see his parents, he didn't get to have friends. All his life as a child, he could only remember the four cornered room. The dirty, old bed. The mirror and the tiny window. He was caged. He didn't even know what comfort is when he was a child. Now, someone saved him. Someone sacrificed for him. The feeling was overwhelming.
"Devius Wayne Chad, I owe you my life now. I'll definitely return the favor one day." He said as if his partner could hear it.
He was up almost the whole night and it's already three in the morning when he felt sleepy. He bowed his head on the hospital bed and closed his eyes. But it wasn't a peaceful sleep at all. Right after he remembers closing his eyes, when he opened it, he was back on that place again. He was back, standing in front of the mirror in that same basement. But unlike the usual, he isn't paralyzed. He could move and look around the room.
"Am I dreaming again?" He asked himself.
When he turned his back, he saw the mirror and his reflection in it. Everything seemed normal, until he heard some footsteps.
"Who is that?" He called out.
A man wearing a black coat walked in front of him. Cameron couldn't see anything because his whole body was covered with black coat. He furrowed his brows as he watch the man walking towards his direction. The mysterious man stopped when he was about a meter away. By that distance, Detective Lee should have probably identified his face or at least have a peek at it. But no matter how hard he tries, he couldn't see him. The only thing visible to his sight was the man's uncovered hands.

"Who are you?" Detective Lee asked out of curiosity.
The man chuckled. "Lee Jin Hong... Lee Jin Hong... Lee Jin Hong..."
"I said who are you?" He asked again but now in a more authoritarian tone.
"Lee Jin Hong..."
"Who the fuck are you!?" He yelled.
"Lee Jin Hong..."
Detective Lee step back as the man repeatedly calls the same name. He kept backing away until his back finally hit the mirror, that means it's the dead end.
"Lee Jin Hong..."
"Lee Jin Hong..."
"Lee Jin Hong..."
He felt terrified as the tone of the man slowly becomes the same tone he grew up listening to. It's the same tone that his abductors uses when they're calling his name before. The same playful tone of voice that remains the only monster he fears. The same tone that always makes him feel like the weakest person on Earth. The same tone that makes his whole body tremble.
"Lee Jin Hong..."
"Lee Jin Hong..."
"Lee Jin Hong..."
Fear is slowly devouring his soul as he felt tears streaming down his face. It's as if he was back in those old hell days. It's like he was back of being that helpless child again. He slowly fell down on his feet, like a rat shivering in fear from the cat who's getting ready to eat it. He felt his body getting cold and paralyzed.
"W-Who are you?" He asked again, his voice is weaker now.
The man held his hand out, as if he was offering it to him. "Lee Yuhyeol..." He said a different name.
"Who are you!?" Cameron asked again.
The man didn't respond, instead he took a step forward, little by little. Detective Lee could only sit there in fear. He gripped his fists and felt something on his hand. It was a piece of paper. He stared at it and back at the man. He doesn't want to take his eyes off of him because he fears that the man might charge at him anytime. He tried to get back to his feet. He held the piece of paper tightly. When he managed to stand up, he stared at the man. He still couldn't see anything other than his hands. He swallowed and gathered all his courage.
Cameron then shouted, "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU!? ANSWER ME!"
The man slightly lifted his head and a devilish grin was revealed. He then slowly lifted his right hand. The sleeve of his black coat was lifted too and a huge burnt mark was revealed. Cameron furrowed his brows because that mark looks really familiar to him but he couldn't remember anything.

"That mark...w-who are you?" He asked again.
"I am Lee Yuhyeol... I am Lee Jin Hong... I am... You." The man answered.
"What do you mean?" Detective Lee asked again.
When the man didn't respond, he bravely yet hesitantly took a step forward. When he was finally standing in front of him, Cameron swallowed hard as he stare at those familiar devilish grin that is curved on that mysterious man's lips.
"W-Who really are you?" Detective Lee asked again.
"Lee Jin Hong..." The man called that name again.
"Was that your name?"
When he didn't get a response, Cameron slowly reach for the man's coat. He wanted to see who's behind that black coat. But when he was about to pull the coat, he felt something warm holding his wrist.
"Cai, wake up..." Officer Chad's familiar voice echoed on the four corners of the room.
Detective Lee felt as if he was being pulled away and when he opened his eyes, the white floor welcomed him. He was still bowed down to the bed. He slowly lifted his head up and he met Officer Chad's worried gaze.
"Cai, why are you crying? Did you have a nightmare again?" Devius worriedly asked.
Detective Lee quickly wiped out his tears and cleared his throat. "How you do feel now? Does your wound hurt?" He changes the topic.
"Just a bit, it's not a big deal." Officer Chad smiled but Cameron sighed.
"Why did you do that? Who asked you to take the bullet for me?" He was ready to lecture his partner.
"Let's not talk about that, I just did what I think is right." Devius said in a pouty lips.
"Right? What if something worst happened? What if you died? Do you want me to live my whole life in regret and guilt?"
"But I didn't die, Cai and you're safe. I did what I think is right, you don't have to argue with me about that. What's important is we're both safe." Devius explained.
No matter how much Detective Lee wanted to scold Officer Chad, he couldn't do it. He was just so greatful that nothing bad happened to him for saving his life. He just stood up and went straight to the door.
"Eh? Cai, where are you goi—ah!" Officer Chad winced before finishing his sentence.
Cameron worriedly ran back to him. "Hey, are you alright? Don't move, you silly. I'm just going to get something for you to eat." Detective Lee stated.
"You're worried about me, Cai?" Officer Chad felt his heart jump as he asked that.
"Tss! Worried my ass. Who's worried about you?" Detective Lee rolled his eyes.
"Stop denying it, Cai. I saw you cry before I lost consciousness at the parking lot. I know you're worried about me—ah!" Devius didn't finish his sentence again because Detective Lee slightly smack him on the head.
"Stop assuming things. You must be hallucinating that time. Just stay right there and don't be stubborn. I'll get some food for yoy so stop moving around. You have to rest." Detective Lee said and started walking out of the room.
Officer Chad didn't say anything and just watched his partner go out with a smile on his face. He stared as the door slowly shut down and then he sighed.
"Strange. Seeing you worried about me...it makes me happy." He mumbled.
Officer Chad leaned his back on the bed and took a deep breath. He can feel the pain in his back where the bullet was shot. He also doesn't understand why he didn't used his gun instead of using his body to shield Detective Lee from the bullet. He could have just shoot the culprit with his gun. But when that moment was happening, the only thing he has in mind is making sure of Cameron's safety. He doesn't care about himself and only care about the detective getting hurt. He shook his head as he laugh.
He was about to close his eyes but a piece of paper on the floor caught his attention. He planned on ignoring it, thinking that it's just a piece of trash left by the patient who used the room before him, but he still chose to carefully get out of his bed and pick it up. He didn't check what it was and just place it on the table beside his hospital bed.

Luster
Growing up with her recently deceased mother’s addiction and her own struggles with gender identity, June Fujiwara was not a nice person. Gaining powers from nearly being murdered didn’t change that, and neither did becoming a mercenary to fund her transition. It took horrific manipulation, the resulting trauma, and the family that helped her through it all. Luster is a derivative work based on Worm by Wildbow (John C. McCrae) that begins prior to Worm and although it doesn't show straight away, the story is very AU.
