《Call Of Death》Chapter 33 : Haunted Past

Devius was awaken in the middle of the night by Cameron's little groans. He sat up and turn to the detective's bed to check what he was doing. It was dark because the lights are off and he couldn't see what was happening. At first, he thought his partner was doing something naughty and he even had this devilish grin in his lips. So, Devius stood up and turned the lights on. When he turned to Detective Lee's direction again to tease him, his devilish grin changed into a confused expression when he saw that Cameron was still groaning as if he was in a lot of pain. He wasn't awake, he was asleep. He's having a nightmare. Officer Chad worriedly walks towards him and saw Cameron all sweaty and his forehead was wrinkled.
In his dream, he was back in that nightmarish place. The basement where he was kept as a kid. All the walls, the mirror, the door and the graffiti on the walls. The dirty floor and the very old bed where he used to lay down to sleep. The small window that resembles of that in jails where they will put those prisoners to punish them if they ever misbehave.
"Why am I here again? What am I doing here?" Cameron asked himself while looking around.
He wanted to escape but he just couldn't move from where he was standing. The room's temperature was frosty, just like how he remembered it. The dreadful feeling of being back in that place is like thousand of arrows being shot at him all at once. He wanted to shout but he couldn't even open his lips. It's as if they were shot and sewn. Cameron was getting out of breath when he heard a familiar voice calling out for him. He couldn't tell where it was coming from but he heard it.
"Senior! Detective Lee! Wake up" Devius carefully shook his partner's shoulder, attempting to wake him up.
"Cameron Lee! Senior Lee!" He called out.
But Cameron was trapped in his dream or more like a nightmare. Upon hearing the familiar voice who was calling out for him, he was able to move but his nightmare didn't end there. He was now running in an endless road where he couldn't tell what's ahead because it is nothing but an utter darkness. The only thing he could see was a spotlight placed on him. He knows something was chasing him because he could hear every step behind him but he couldn't look behind him, fearing that he might stumble and couldn't get up.

Cameron continued running but no matter how fast he run, he couldn't get to the end of the road. It's endless. It's a void. Upon learning that he won't get anywhere, he gathered all his courage and stopped on his tracks but he didn't look back.
"You can fight but you can't hide, choose to forget if you want but your past will come for hunt." He looked around when he heard a man's voice.
But he couldn't see anything because everything was black. "Who are you?" He shouted.
"Stop running or your haunted past will keep on chasing." Said the voice again.
It was very familiar yet it was not. He could hear it everywhere but he couldn't see anyone. When he turned to his back, the scene changed. If earlier he was in an utter darkness, now he was back again in that very old basement but it's another room. The walls are maid of old planks. A beam of sunlight from outside was peaking through the gap.
"Where am I?" He asked himself.
Cameron took a step and saw himself in front of a mirror but what confused him is that, his reflection was a lot younger. It was himself as a ten year old kid in his reflection. The mirror, the graffiti and bed, it was the same but the room was different. It wasn't the one he came from earlier.
"Long time no see, Lee Yuhyeol." His reflection said with an eerie smile.
"You..." He took a step backward.
The place slowly became familiar to him again. He can feel his hands getting sweaty and drops of cold sweat all over his body. His legs became weak and he can feel his body starting to tremble.
"W-Why am I back here?" He looked around with fear all over his system as the place begun to emerge into a place he was so familiar with.
"You were never out of this place, Yuhyeol. You and Jin Hong never escaped. You will forever be trapped in here. Hahaha!" He heard his reflection laughed like a total psycho.
That's when he realized, it wasn't his reflection. It was just using his face but it wasn't him at all. The name Jin Hong and Yuhyeol sounded very familiar to him. He tried his best to remember but he couldn't. In his dream, everything is impossible. He was the weakest in his nightmare.

"You...W-Who are you?" He stood there unable to move, as if his feet were glued on the floor.
His reflection stared at him with an eerie smile and said, "I am you. This place, we'll never be able to leave here unless you find the key to the forgotten door. Or else, we'll be forever trapped here and never to escape." Those words scared him a lot.
He managed to escape from that hell before and couldn't bear to spend any second here again. Being in that place was a total nightmare for his childhood and being back there will slowly take his sanity away from him. He held his head as it was starting to ache. He wanted to look away yet he couldn't take his eyes off of his reflection on the mirror.
"Cameron, wake up!" Then he heard that very familiar voice again.
"Who is it?" He whispered as he looked around.
"Cameron Caiseus Lee! Please wake up!" The voice became clearer and clearer as a beam of bright light envelope his vision. "Cai!"
"NOOO!" Detective Lee sat up on his bed while panting, he felt a hand on both of his shoulders.
"Senior Lee, are you alright?" Officer Chad's voice was full with worry.
Cameron shook his head as he swallowed hard and stable his breathing. He was very thankful that everything was just a nightmare. Being in that place again is worst than dying slowly and painfully. It was like he's dying repeatedly over and over again.
"Wait here, I'll get you some water." Officer Chad patted his shoulder, Cameron didn't get respond as he was still in shock.
"Why did I dream about that place? It's been a long time and I had almost forgotten how it looked like." Detective Lee sighed while wiping his sweaty face.
"Senior, drink some water." Officer Chad handed him a glass of water.
"Thank you." Cameron drank it all and place the glass on the bed.
Officer Chad was curious about his partner's dream because he could still see the fear and anxiety in his eyes and face. Not because he's scared of Cameron but because he's scared that he will make it worst for the detective. It's the first time he saw those kinds of emotion from this guy. The way he whined earlier, Devius was sure it wasn't a simple nightmare but he couldn't muster up the courage to ask so he just stared at him. Watching as his expression slowly calm down.
"Why are you staring?" He nearly fell from his sit when Cameron suddenly spoke.
"Well, nothing." Devius simply answered.
Detective Lee could read his junior's mind. He knows Officer Chad was curious but he wasn't ready to say anything about his haunted past yet and he's not sure if he'll ever be ready to talk about it. He will never be ready to open up. If he had a choice, he would gladly forget everything about it once and for all but this is reality. Sometimes, those you want to forget were the things you will always remember.
"Devius..." He called him as he lean on the wall.
"Hmm. Yeah?"
"I couldn't tell you every detail for now but maybe one day, I'll have the courage to speak up about it." He said in a sincere voice.
"What are you talking about, senior?" Officer Chad questioned.
Cameron took a deep breath and looked him straight in the eye. "I had a nightmare about my past and it wasn't a very good memory. I can't tell you anything more than that... maybe not for now." He said in all honesty.
"I'm not asking you to tell me anything if you're not ready yet, senior." Officer Chad uttered. Devius took a deep breath and smiled. "But if I have anything I could do to help you, you can always count on me."
"Tss! I'll do that. Let's just go back to sleep because we have to work again tomorrow." Detective Lee said and lied down again.
Officer Chad just shook his head and smiled. He's still worried about his partner but he knows that he can handle it. Devius stood up and went back to his bed. He's starting to admire Cameron Caiseus Lee more and more for being a tough person. He never failed to amazed him in everything he does.

8 648Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

Finding new friends along a path riddled with tragedy, Essairyn must learn who to trust as deceit and betrayal lie behind kindly faces. Life in this deceptively promising world slowly spirals down a path of no return. This is not a game, but cruel reality. Her simple adventure became the modest beginnings in a chain of disruptions that tore even the dimensional fabric of time and space. No one, not even Essairyn, was who she thought they were.
