《Call Of Death》Chapter 31 : The Clue

Detective Cameron Caiseus Lee was just staring at the picture pasted on the glass board. The meeting has been over an hour ago but he chose to stay and figure out something. He doesn't know why but he thinks there's something more behind the murders. He can't figure it out but there's something inside him that's telling him, it could be something like a message. He thinks the reason behind the killings are far way more than they could imagine.
"Senior, you're not having lunch with me?" Officer Devius Chad opened the door, disturbing his thoughts.
He faced the door. "I'm fine, just go and have lunch." He said.
"You need to eat, you didn't eat breakfast earlier. How can you work with an empty stomach?" Officer Chad tried to convince him.
"I need to figure out something. You can eat first, I'll be fine." He responded but Devius is a hard-headed person as he could be.
He walked in and closed the door then head towards his partner. "You're thinking about the texter and the recent murders, aren't you?"
"I just need to figure something out. I can feel that there's something I needed to know but I just can't tell what is it." Cameron sat on the chair.
"Like what?" Devius asked again.
Cameron went silent for a while. He gathered all the thoughts he have, thinking that he could figure out something through that. He looked back at the glass board and then to his partner.
"That Red told me on the riddle that there's a clue, he said he has given us a clue but I don't know what that clue means." He problematically mumbled.
"Well, maybe it's the name Red? He didn't left anything except for the word Red that we found at the crime scene." Officer Chad concluded but Cameron shook his head.
"It's not that simple, Chad. There must be something more. Something that could lead us to uncover the culprit's identity." Detective Lee stated.
Devius stayed silent and stared at the photos of the victims. He gathered the information one by one. First, they all died after a phone call and lose something red in their belongings.
There's no fingerprints or anything left as evidence of the crime. Also, all crimes happened near a forest or somewhere that has many trees near. The crime also happened without any witness. And the culprit wears a black coat that covers his body and face. After summing up everything, he placed his hand under his chin. That's when his eyes turned to the last victim, Lee Jin Hong.
"Senior, I think there's something odd about the last victim, Lee Jin Hong." Officer Chad pointed at the picture.

Detective Lee looked at it. "What is it?" He asked.
"All the victims, according to their families, dies after receiving a phone call." He started pointing at all the prior victims.
"Yeah?"
Then he pointed at Lee Jin Hong again. "But this guy, he doesn't have any cellphone with him. Also, the other victims loses something red yet he didn't lose anything. All his belongings are with him and his clothes are stained with blood but not torn like that of Niana Penningson." He explained.
"And what are you trying to say?" Detective Lee crossed his legs.
"Could there be a possibility that this one is another person's doing?"
"Hmm?"
"What do you think, senior?"
"Well, everything is done very differently from the prior ones but I'm pretty sure that it is done by the same suspect." Cameron stated.
"But something is really not adding up, Detective Lee."
Knock! Knock!
Both Cameron and Devius are interrupted by a knock on the door. They both turned to look who was it and saw Detective Kairo Sedis Parker smiling, he has some files in his hand.
"Did I interrupted you, guys?" He asked.
"No." Cameron simply answered.
"I'm just here to give you guys some files about the case." Detective Parker said as he handed the documents towards Officer Chad.
Devius took it and smiled. "Thank you, detective."
"I'll head out then, don't stress yourself too much." He patted both of their shoulders before leaving.
Devius started checking the files. Most of it were the prior ones so he already know what was written in them. Detective Lee just remained silent as while watching his partner check in the files. He rarely see Devius' serious face and although he secretly enjoys the officer's childish personality, Officer Chad's serious face still hits different. He wasn't even aware that he's already staring at the police officer.
"Senior, I think, I know the clue that is said on the riddle." Cameron was brought back to his sentence when Devius spoke.
"What?"
"Look, the lastest victim didn't get or receive a call before he died because he doesn't have a phone and he didn't lose anything either but..."
"But what?"
"But the person who reported the crime, his name is Red." Devius continued.
"So..." Cameron furrowed his brows.
"So..." Officer Chad nodded as if telling his partner that they have the same idea running in their mind.
"That means, it's the clue. The clue is Red. The person who's been texting me since yesterday is the clue, himself." Detective Lee said as he turn to the glass board.

"That right, senior."
"That could also mean that there is something more at the crime scene." Cameron stood up from his sit.
When their eyes met again, both men went out of the office quickly and run to their car. Detective Lee went to the driver's seat while Devius went to his side. While Detective Lee was driving, his phone vibrated again. This time, it wasn't a message instead, it was a call. He glanced at Officer Chad, nodding his head, gesturing him to answer it for him. Devius did as he was told and put it in loud speaker for them to hear whatever the caller is going to say.
"Hello?" Detective Lee uttered.
There was an utter silence on the other line before someone spoke. "Did you find out the clue, Detective?" A deep, robotic voice spoke.
"Yes, why don't you just tell us everything instead of playing like this?" Cameron asked.
The caller giggled on the other line. "Where's the fun in that? So, what the clue if you really found it?"
"The clue is red." Detective Lee said confidently but only received a teasing laugh from the caller.
"You're not as smart as I thought but I'm impressed." The caller chuckled.
"What do you mean?" Cameron asked, confused.
"Detective, the clue is not the word Red nor the color red but it's a name." Said the caller.
"I am talking about your name —Red— I'm not talking about the word or the color." Detective Lee explained.
"No, but my name could be useful one day. Smart." The caller chuckled again.
The voice was different but when the caller chuckled again, Devius found it familiar and similar to the person who's been calling him. He felt his heart skip a beat by the thought that the riddle texter and the person who's been calling him are the same. He shove the thought away and begun listening to the caller's conversation with Cameron again.
"Do you want to ask more question, detective? I am being generous today but maybe tomorrow or some other day, I won't be anymore." The caller presented.
Cameron went silent for a while. Thinking of what to ask because he knows that if he asked directly about the things that caller may or may mot know, he wouldn't answer. He has to think of anything to ask that could also help them.
"Who are you and how did you managed to get my number? Do you know anything about the crime? Do you know the culprit? Do you know James Lee, the lastest victim?" Detective Lee asked the caller several questions but he just chuckled again.
"Easy, easy, Detective. I told you to asked me some questions but I didn't say that you can fire them at me. Don't be in a hurry, park your car and then we can talk. I don't want you to get involved in an accident." The caller advise, Cameron and Devius looked at each other with wrinkled forehead.
Officer Chad became suspicious but there's also a possibility that the engine of the running car could also be heard from the other line because it's a bit loud. Detective Lee looked for a place to park his car. He is getting suspicious and he knows that someone is watching them. When he found a place, he immediately parked the car there. He then looked at Officer Chad again and nodded.
"How did you know I was driving?" Detective Lee asked, looking at Officer Chad as they both wait for the answer.
There was a small laugh on the other line. "Don't worry, I'm not stalking you. I just heard some car engines, so I can tell you're driving." The caller answered.
"Then, now answer my questions. Who are you?" Detective Lee asked again.
"I told you already, Detective. My name is Red." The deep, robotic voice said.
"How did you get my number?"
"You gave it to me, remember?" The caller answered.
"What?"
"You gave it to me voluntarily, detective." The caller repeated.
"I gave it to you?" Cameron asked again in confusion.
The caller laughed again. "You did. But I called you not because I wanted to answer your questions, I called you because I wanted to tell you something." The caller stated.
Cameron and Devius turned to each other. "Tell me what?" Detective Lee questioned.
"You're looking for the culprit, aren't you?" The caller asked.
Detective Lee nodded as if he could see him. "Do you know the culprit? What do you know about him? Who is he?"
"Maybe and maybe not. But that's not important, just always remember what I'm going to say today. The person you're looking for was never on the run, so stop chasing. He's just around you but you just couldn't see him because you're blinded by a mask." After that, the call ended and both men stared at it.
"Hello? Hello!"
Detective Lee and Officer Chad couldn't understand everything but now everything is clearer than before. Now, they have an idea that the culprit was just around them, watching. But the most important thing to find out for now is who is the killer? Who is Red? What are the clues? What is the connection between Red and the killer?

8 141Dispatches from the Inter-galactic
Dispatches From The Inter-Galactic is a series of loosely related satirical stories which take place in a galaxy full of various interstellar civilizations and numerous space faring species generally described as consentients. This series is set in a galaxy which take place in a similar but not entirely unlike the galaxy in which my series Up in Space takes place While there are numerous themes related to interstellar life, several of the stories directly relate to specific themes such as; The pan-galactic ramifications to the use of supersymetrical energy sources (often drained from intera-located alternate and pocket realities.) the use of which by most interstellar civilizations is steadily increasing the overall amount of Dark Matter. This is increasing the mass of the galaxy and results in the occasional rips in inter-dimensional space as well as an overall increase in supernova activity. It is also speeding up the approach of the galaxy in Andromeda, which is of concern to several long lived civilizations; The Morphoids, a race of shape-changing consentients who are capable of using the space lanes created by the use of supersymetrical sourced energy to spread throughout the galaxy. They are currently viewed as threat number one by many space-faring species; and Xeno and exo-sexuality, as many species try to figure out what sort of enjoyment they can have with many of the species they encounter in space (only some of which are carbon-based, or more rarely, humanoid in appearance). This also relates to the altering of species to make reproduction somewhat easier for those with rather complicated lifestyles. A major force in this area of pursuit is the galactic visiteering industry, which promotes the ‘uplifting’ of more primitive planet-bound near-consentients.
