《Call Of Death》Chapter 23 : Black Coat Guy

Michael was sleeping when they entered his room. He was curled up into a ball like a kitten. His innocent sleeping face tells them that he's suffering and his crooked eyebrows are the proof that he's scared. Both men felt pity towards the poor child. Devius still remembers the day when he first met the kid. If he knew something's gonna happen, he should have put an eye to him. As for Detective Cameron Lee, he felt guilty for not being able to protect this poor soul despite him being his neighbor.
"I think we should just let him rest and come back next time." Detective Lee uttered while looking at the kid.
"Yeah, maybe let's just come back next time." Officer Chad agreed.
They both looked at the child first before deciding to turn to the door. Devius opened it for him and taking one last glanced at the child before leaving the room.
"Waaaahhhh!" Michael jolted out of the bed screaming before the two could even take a step away.
Cameron and Devius looked at each and immediately went inside the room to check on him. They saw Michael panting and sweating all over, tears are flowing down his innocent yet scared face. He looks so terrified and his hands are trembling. Tears streaming down his face. Devius hurriedly approached him, patting his shoulder, hoping to calm him down.
The kid became very defensive upon seeing them. "Get away from me. Don't hurt me, please." Michael pleaded with both his hands.
"Michael, it's alright. I'm not gonna hurt you, it's me." Devius tried to comfort him.
"Kid, don't be afraid. No one's gonna hurt you here." Detective Lee said too.
"B-Black coat...B-Black coat..." The kid kept mumbling repeatedly.
"Michael, calm down. It's alright. You're safe here." Officer Chad caress his hair.
"B-Black coat...B-Black coat..." Michael continued to whisper.
Officer Chad looked up to Detective Lee who was furrowing his eyebrows while looking at the child. They are both thinking the same thing, it's about the culprit. The guy in a black coat. After the kid calmed down, he fell asleep again. Detective Lee and Officer Chad didn't leave the room until they are sure that Michael was already deep in his sleep.
"Now, it's confirmed. There is only one suspect in this series of crime. The black coat guy is behind all this. He's the one killing the victims and he's also the one who abducted the kid." Detective Lee said while biting his lower lips as they both watched the kid sleep.
Officer Chad nodded. "He should pay for everything he had done. We should catch him no matter what. He didn't even spare a child." Devius determinedly stated.
"Let's go home first and search the kid's house. We might find something there." Cameron patted Devius' shoulder before getting out the room.

Officer Chad was taken a back at first because it was the first time that his partner did that. A small smile curved on his lips before turning to Michael. He touch the kid's hair and followed his partner out. They both hopped inside the car and head to their apartment. They asked the security for the key card first before going to open the room. When the door was unlocked and swung open, the room was in a mess. Dirty clothes are scattered around the place, there are flies feasting on the spoiled foods and the smell of unwashed sheets has surrounded the place.
On the other corner were empty bottles of beers and some junk foods. The walls are dirty with graffiti and some stains that they don't want to find out anymore. They walked around and looked at every corner of the room but all they could see are litters.
"I don't think this place is appropriate for a child to stay. This is so dirty and stinky. He could easily get sick at an environment like this." Detective Lee covered his nose using the sleeve of his jacket.
"It doesn't look like someone entered here forcefully." Officer Chad looked around, avoiding the bottle of beers on the floor.
Cameron nodded. "It doesn't even seem like someone lives here."
"But, everything looks normal."
"It's naturally messy, you mean?" Detective Lee asked.
"Yeah." He answered with a chuckle.
Cameron shook his head. "Let's just search. Tss."
They went searching in every corner. Officer Chad went to the bathroom, covering his nose because the smell of urine and cigars are too strong it made him feel dizzy. Detective Lee headed to the bedroom and saw more bottles of beers scattered around. The blanket was also on the floor and there's only one pillow. Aside from those, there's nothing to be seen in there.
He went out and returned to the living room where Devius was still busy examining the place. The windows are fine and there seemed to be nothing missing. Cameron checked the door knob and the lock but everything is working just fine.
"What did you find? Did you find anything?" Detective Lee asked with a sigh.
Devius shook his head. "Everything looks fine — the locks, knobs, the windows. Nothing is destroyed by force."
"Wait, do you remember where the boy was found after he escaped the culprit?" Detective Lee asked, wrinkling his forehead.
"Hmm. Chief Simon said that the boy was found roaming the street with muddy clothes." Devius responded.
"So, is that near the apartment?" He asked again.
Devius shook his head. "No, it's near the playground. Why are you suddenly asking Detective Lee?"
"Playground? You mean the playground near the forest?" He questioned.

"Yeah, that one." He nodded.
Cameron went silent for a while, trying to figure out something. All the victims' location are near the forest or inside a forest. That's the only similarity except for the red objects that are missing. Also, there's no sign of force entry at Michael's house, that means the crime of abduction didn't happen here.
"Wait, you said you met Michael and his mom when you're buying the drinks, didn't you?" He turned to Officer Chad who nodded in response.
"Yes but I didn't totally met his mom because she was busy buying more beers. I only talked to the kid, senior.
Cameron looked around and then to Devius. "Then, where is his mother?"
"What?"
"The house was locked and there's no one here. Michael was all alone too when he escaped and was found on the street. Therefore, could his mother still be in the hands of the culprit?" Cameron concluded that made Devius think for a while.
Detective Lee has a point. There is a possibility that Michael wasn't the only victim on the killer's hand. He might also have his mother. Maybe she helped him to escape and be safe. Both men looked at each other. But then, Officer Chad felt his phone vibrating. He immediately took it out and the familiar unknown number flashed on the screen.
"Who's that?" Detective Lee asked.
"Just someone I know." Officer Chad lied and went to answer the phone. "Hello."
He heard a laugh on the other side. "Looking for the kid's mother, huh? You won't see anything in that room, officer."
"What?" Devius tried to stay calm even if he's very annoyed.
"That little bastard was lucky because he escaped from me but I won't leave him until I got what I want." The strange deep voice said.
Devius tightly clutched his hands and that didn't escape Cameron Lee's sight. Detective Lee know something was wrong about the call because of his partner's crooked eyebrows and expression.
"Officer Chad, who is that?" He asked but Devius only looked at him without answering. "Officer Chad."
Devius didn't answer because he doesn't know what to tell his partner. He doesn't want Cameron to find out that the culprit has been calling him. He's worried that he might be a hinder in solving the case and catching the killer.
"Hey, Chad. I'm asking you, who is that?" Detective Lee held Devius' wrist in annoyance because his partner is ignoring him.
"Ooh, seems like you're with your lover. How romantic for you to confessed just like that." He culprit teased, making Devius' eyes grew big.
"What did you just say?" He uttered, his heart skipping a beat.
Devius doesn't know how the culprit found out about the made up confession he did. He turned to Detective Lee who has no idea about who his partner was talking to but his expression looks annoyed and almost out of patience. Cameron just looked at Devius' worried expression on his face while he was still holding his wrist.
"Hahaha." The caller laughed as if he was mocking Devius. "Why? Did he reject you because he doesn't know how to respond? Or did he tell you that he will try to like you?" The caller continued teasing.
"How the hell did you know that? Tell me!" Officer Chad's voice begun to raised.
"I always have eyes on you. Try and find it." The caller answered.
"Devius Chad, who are you talking to?" He asked again but Officer Chad didn't answer, instead, he bolted out of the room and ran to their apartment.
Detective Lee was left confused before following his partner. Devius looked in every corner, searching for some hearing devise or hidden camera but he couldn't find anything. He looked under the bed, under the table, inside the closet but he found nothing. His trembling hand still holding the phone to his ear while the caller on the line just kept laughing.
"What? Are you scared now? Looking for me?" The caller laughed maniacally.
"Shut the fuck up! I'll make sure you pay for this. Let the kid and his mother alone and face me. I'm not scared of you, you bastard!" He shouted before ending the call.
Detective Lee stared at Devius' angry yet worried expression. He was breathing heavily while balling his fist and slammed it on the wall. It was the first time he saw him go berserk like that. And the way he talked to the person on the phone, Cameron got an idea about the identity of the caller.
He walked towards Devius with a serious face. "Who was that?"
"It's no one." Devius answered.
"Was that the culprit? Were you really the next victim, Devius? You're not pranking me that time, right?" He hesitantly asked.
Officer Chad slowly turned to him, swallowing hard. "It's nothing, senior. We have to find out the culprit's whereabouts, that's the only way to end it all." He said before going out of the room, leaving Cameron again.
Detective Lee just sighed. He looked around the room, checked inside the closet, under the bed, chairs and tables but saw nothing. He then looked up and saw something under the bulb light. He confusedly went there and saw that it was a small hidden camera. It was almost impossible to see if you're not in concentration. He stared straight to it and smirked before leaving the room to follow his partner.
