《Call Of Death》Chapter 19 : The Next Victim 2

Officer Chad run towards the parking area and immediately look for Detective Lee. He turned to every corner but it's kind of dark and he couldn't quite see everything. In addition to that, he's a bit panicked for some reason. While he was busy walking into the parking lot and searching for his partner, he felt his phone vibrating again. He begun to get familiar with the stranger's number flashed on the screen. He swallowed before hesitantly answering it.
"Who're you looking for, Officer?" The caller spoke as soon as call was answered.
"It's none of your business." He hissed, the caller chuckled. Devius balled his fist in annoyance. "If you think you'll scare me, then you're wrong. Just come after me and let's see who's tougher. Don't hide behind the line, jerk." He challenged him but the caller only replied with an annoying laugh.
"Don't be in too much of a hurry, officer. We'll come to that. I promise you, we'll meet soon. But for now, I'll just enjoy watching you two." After that, the call ended again. Officer Chad was left staring at the black screen of his phone.
On the other hand, Detective Lee was walking straight back to the parking lot after a quick talk with one of his juniors but when he was about to ride on his car, he suddenly felt that strange feeling again. It's that unfamiliar feeling he felt earlier in the forest. He scattered his sight around but it's so dark, he can barely see without the dim light. But he is not mistaken when he saw a figure in the distance. It's dark but he can recognize everything including the feeling of the strange man staring at him while grinning.
Moments after Officer Chad regained himself, he started looking for his partner again and that's when he saw Cameron Lee staring at something again. He knows something was off when he saw Detective Lee reaching for his gun behind him. He glanced at the spot where Detective Lee was looking but he couldn't see what it is because of the post. Feeling that it wasn't safe to stay longer in that dim area, he decided to get near Cameron.
He ran towards him with a smile while saying, "Hey, senior Lee, I think you're forgetting something."
Detective Lee turned to him when he heard his voice but he went to gave a glanced at the spot again making Devius do the same and saw nothing.
"What are you looking out there? Is there a ghost?" He asked, jokingly.
"Ghost aren't real. What is it? Why did you follow me?" Questioned Detective Lee instead of answering his question.
Officer Chad raised his brows. He knows that his partner was keeping something from him but he doesn't want to force him to say anything. Im fact, he has some idea of what could he be looking at earlier. Devius sensed that it wasn't just him who the culprit is teasing, he's also teasing Cameron.

So he just jokingly said, "Oh! You forgot about me, we live in the same apartment since last week, didn't we? Why are you leaving me behind?" He faked laughed to which the latter just sighed.
Detective Lee looked at him with a dead face. He usually gives him that look if he did something silly, as if Cameron is mocking him in his mind but Devius didn't mind at all. He's been familiar with the detective for quite some time. For sure, Devius knows that Cameron has been comparing him to a kid by the way he stare at him. He just gave him a smile.
Detective Lee sighed and stated, "Come on, hop in."
"Thanks!" He happily responded.
He went to the other side but his phone begun ringing again. He thought it was the same person but this time, another unknown number was flashed on the screen of his phone. He confusedly stared at it before leaning over to the window.
"Wait," Devius gestured to which Detective Lee just nodded. "Hello?" He said after answering the call.
"..."
"Hello? Who is this?"
"..."
"Is that you again?"
"..."
The line was silent for a while. Seconds after, he heard heavy breathing, it's as if the caller has been running for a while. Then a male teenager's voice was heard.
"Officer Chad, are you Officer Chad?" The boy asked.
"Yes? Are you alright? Who is this?" Devius asked in a concerned voice.
"Officer, it's not important. Just be careful. You know you're the next victim. Don't keep it to yourself or everyone around you will be in danger. Please tell your mist trusted person that you're the next victim in order to save you and your love ones. I'm begging you. Please don't keep everything to yourself. Please." The caller's voice sounds really desperate, but what he really noticed was the familiar tone of it.
"W-What do you mean?" For the first time, he felt his heart pounding with anxiety. "Are you alright? Do you need help? Just tell me, I'll save you." Devius added, then he heard a faint cry on the other line.
"Save yourself and everyone, that's the only way you could save me. I'll do my best to warm you and stay alive until you rescue me, please, officer." His voice turned into whispers.
"Kid, tell me where you are." Officer Chad worriedly uttered.
"Tell the nearest person to you about the killer, you'll be able to help me if you help yourself first." After that, the call went off.
"Hello? Hello!" Devius tried calling the number again but this time, it was turned off.
Devius felt like he could still hear the kid's voice on the other line. The way he begged made him very anxious. He felt like the caller was in great danger and he has to do something to help him. What worried him the most is that he couldn't understand what he was telling him. How could he save everyone by telling them his situation? Wouldn't that make everything even worst? He stared at his phone and turned to looked at the car where Detective Lee is patiently waiting.

'Tell your most trusted person about your situation.'
'Tell your most trusted person about your situation.'
'Tell your most trusted person about your situation.'
Those words from the caller played inside Devius' mind repeatedly as he look at Cameron's direction. He doesn't know what to do. He's caught between keeping everything to himself because it's the safest way he could think of or tell Cameron everything because at this moment, he's the only person he could consider as his most trusted one.
'Would it be worth it?' He thought to himself.
He felt that he's sweating all over. He took a deep breath and begun walking towards the car. He felt his palms sweating and he suddenly feels cold. He got inside the car, hesitating if he should really tell Detective Lee about the call he received. He doesn't know if he could trust the words of an obviously teeenage kid. He suddenly felt horrified. Not because he was the next victim but because there might be a possibility that everyone around him is at risk too.
'Damn it!'
Detective Lee noticed Officer Chad's behavior. He furrowed his brows, looking confusedly at his usually cheery partner. He's not used to see him so freaked out.
Then he asked him, "What's wrong?"
Devius Chad swallowed hard before turning his sweaty and fearful face to his partner. Through his question, Devius knew that Cameron was already suspecting him. He is still hesitating about telling him everything him, even if the kid's voice was repeatedly playing to his mind. He doesn't know what will happen next. He wasn't scared for himself but he's scared for everyone, especially his sister.
'Tell your most trusted person about your situation.'
Devius stared at Detective Lee for a while. "I'm next, senior. I'm going to die next." He whispered.
He saw as Detective Lee's expression changed from confused into something more like shocked and surprised.
The detective was taken aback and he can't say anything. He just stared at him while trying to process what he just said. Inside his mind was a thought that if it's true, that means the Killer Caller will come at his partner, Devius.
"What? What did you just said?" Cameron asked.
"I said, I'm the next target. I received a phone call from the culprit." He repeated.
Cameron went silent as he shook his head. "But...when? Why tell me just now? What did he tell you?"
"He said he wanted my business card and that he'll meet me soon." Devius chuckled.
Detective Lee looked at him with confusion. "Chad, what's so funny? You're life's at risk and you can still laugh?" He sounded annoyed but worried.
"Well, I once told you that I'm curious about what he's telling his victims on the phone before he kills them, right?"
"Yeah, and?"
"I guess my curiosity is answered."
"You're crazy, Chad. But, if the culprit's after you, what's your plan?" Cameron asked, Devius shook his head.
Yet for Detective Lee, the question was just a cover up. He doesn't want to offend his partner but in reality, he is considering the situation as the best way to catched the culprit. Devius looked at his partner and he saw through his expression. He kind of felt sad and disappointed but he couldn't blame Cameron if he's thinking about using him to catch the culprit.
'Jerk, why don't you just tell me that you wanted to used my situation to catch that bastard?'
"Detective Lee, do you want to use me as a bait for the culprit?" Devius asked.
Detective Lee didn't expect Devius to asked him directly making him unable to respond. Cameron wanted to say something or do something but he couldn't think of any. He could have just driven away but the awkward silence and the sudden guilt inside him just wouldn't let him do it. Devius sensed Cameron's feelings then an idea came to his mind, he couldn't just let it be like that.
'Damn it! I shouldn't have told him that.'
So, he thought of something he doesn't know if would regret sooner or later but still did it. He faked a smile and begun laughing as he clapped his hands.
"That was hilarious. Detective Lee, you looked so terrified earlier. I was just kidding, I wasn't gonna die next." Devius lied.
"What?"
"It's a prank. The culprit didn't call me. It's just my sister. I fooled you! Haha!"
Cameron's expression changed from worried and awkward to annoyed. "Are you fucking kidding me?" He asked.
Devius thought of saying 'No' but he just can't do that so he said, "Yeah. I was just wondering about what would be your reaction if I would really be the next to die."
"Well, I could kill you right now you idiot!" He yelled in frustration.
"Sorry, senior." Devius mumbled.
Detective Lee shook his head in disbelief as he sighed. He gave Devius a death glare before he started driving. Officer Chad hid his real expression with a savage smile as he sat silently in the car. He was trying to figure out about what to do next. Telling Cameron isn't a good idea. He can't save anyone in involving someone. He has to figure it out himself without letting Detective Lee know.

NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/

A Sky of Star and Strength
Jake was just an intelligent kid living a pretty regular life in Mill Creek, Washington. Then the apocalypse happens. Now with his Dad out of the country and totally in yet out his element, this is his story. My take on a system apocalypse based around "life force" as a currency. The main character will have a special power (as will most of the other characters) and be rather OP, you have been warned. Like many of the authors on this site I have no formal writing experience so writing tips and grammar corrections are much appreciated :)
