Bona fide (adjective): in good faith

The little green bird could barely lift its eyelids open. It made sense, considering the four different trips it took yesterday, with a small metal bucket in its claws, back and forth from the bird bath to the open windowsill. By the time it returned from its third trip, the poor bird was already drenched and exhausted.

It was watering plants. Or trying to, at least.

Four of them were sitting like brothers in a line of tiny clay pots, their luscious green leaves similar to one another but not quite the same shape. The owner of the house hasn’t visited them in days, and the little green bird grew more anxious with each passing minute—the sun was merciless during summer and there was no hope for rain. It had been borrowing the bird bath in the backyard, so it thought it should return the favor by saving the poor plants.

Stretching out its sore wings, it fluttered over to the small bucket and picked it up again. Then, it flew up to the bird bath and filled it with as much water as it could carry in one trip, the metal teetering precariously in its claws.

When it reached the windowsill at last, a weird gleam caught its eye. Was the plant glowing? A strange looking glimmer shone from the base of the—

It was reflecting water!

With a dismayed squawk, the green bird hopped over to confirm its suspicions—and it found, to its absolute horror, that the plants were indeed plastic.
