The moment finally came.

She dreaded it for ages, from the second she stepped into his home, to the sound of his voice for her company in bed for the first time.

She was good in bed. All that she was ever good for, all that she was ever loved for. Her beauty stood as the lone wall between her and poverty, and she had no choice when it came to making money.

Dressed in a thin bathrobe, she awaited his presence like a miserable dog waiting for its owner. Although the cycle had repeated countless times before, she cowered under the covers, sweating and quaking.

“Ah, you’re already in bed,” said a soft voice as the door clicked shut.

Another warm body slipped under the blankets, graciously reheating her shivering body but not her cold heart. She felt lead-like dread snaking up in her limbs, and an absurd hope that she could at least enjoy the experience before being betrayed for the millionth time.

“Goodnight,” he whispered. “Thanks for being here, I appreciate it.”

Much to her surprise, the man’s eyes were already closed by the time she peeked out from the covers. His breath began to lull into a smooth, slow cadence, and a smile of comfort played on his lips.

A tear rolled down her cheek. It was warm.
