《The Software Detective》2.16 You Truly are Scum

When the technician finished telling us Ronald’s story, I surveyed the room to see how everyone took the story. Kalina had her hands on her hips looking down at the ground with a grimace across her face. The two technicians providing their commentary throughout this entire case were for once speechless. One ran his hands through his hair and the other had his hand over his mouth staring at Aniyah with wide eyes. Then there was Derenik next to Aniyah, he was now seated much farther away from Aniyah with his hands pulling his hair back exposing the roots of his hair.
We were all thinking the same thing. This is one truly vile woman.
“Is all that true?” Derenik said, staring at nothing in front of him. He couldn’t bring himself to look at Aniyah.
Aniyah looked down at her belly and rubbed it. “Yes, it’s all true…” She sniffled and then he heads shot up to look at Derenik. “But Derenik, you have to believe me;hear my side of the sto…”
“Save it.” Derenik cut her off. “Just like Ronald’s children, you should get rid of that one, too. No child should grow up without their father.”
Derenik stood up from the couch. “Am I free to go, officers and detectives?” Derenik said. In his eyes, there was so much pain and anguish. I couldn’t keep him here any longer, so I nodded and released him from this crime scene.
Kalina stared at Aniyah sitting on the couch, crying into a pillow. “Alright, even though there was no murder, Ronald could still receive the justice he deserved.” Kalina said as she walked over to Aniyah and placed a two-business card next to Aniyah, “I’m sorry for your loss. Here is a really good funeral home. The other card is a really good therapist. After this, I think you are going to need it.”

Kalina walked to the door and let in the technicians to retrieve the body. As I walked out, there were some technicians discussing the case.
“I still think the wife did it.” One technician said.
“Trust me, I want her in jail as much as you. But you heard Ronald’s note. It was a suicide.” The other technician with her hair in a ponytail said.
“You never know, she could be the next Amy Dunn, and she made up the entire story.” The technician said.
“I get where you are coming from. A lot of us girls are crazy. But a bitch of that level is only a piece of fiction.” The technician said they both walked past me and went inside to help clean up.
Opening Kalina’s car door, I could see a wide grin on her face. “So where are we eating, loser boy?” She said, putting her seatbelt on.
“Wait, I thought it was for tomorrow?” I said, closing the car door and putting my seatbelt on.
“I solved that case so quickly I think I need a reward, don’t I?”
“Fine, whatever is close to HQ will be fine. I want to finish working on the prototype.” I said as we drove from the crime scene. In the rear-view mirror, I saw the house getting smaller in the distance.
If Kalina weren’t here, I would have sent a guilty woman and innocent man off to prison. Maybe that was all a part of Ronald’s secret agenda. I guess I’ll never know. But what I do know is if you choose the wrong partner. They can make your life a nightmare.

Shades of the Moon
I'm rewriting this story! I have taken down Arc 2 and Arc 3 already to avoid spoiling my new novel. The only reason I'm keeping the first 10 chapters is nostalgia; the writing is awkward and the story is not plotted out properly, but it's here if anyone wants to compare it to the new one. If you'd like to read a more professionally written version of this story, I highly suggest checking out my Synergy. Synopsis version too-many-to-count: “I see,” Kiona said. “But . . . you’re changing once again, aren’t you?” The entity considered her question, lifting a clawed hand towards the night sky. They observed the back of their hand idly, watching the glowing orange veins pulse alongside their pitch-black exoskeleton. The wind picked up right then, and Kiona shivered—just as much from the cold as from the savage grin on the creature's face. “That’s right,” the entity said, clenching their hand slowly into a fist. They let out a quiet laugh, staring defiantly at the Moon as it rose from behind the clouds. “We are shades, yet not exactly. Not like the others. Here, in this world, we've become something more. We are the Shades of the Moon.” There was a heartbeat of silence, during which Kiona joined the entity in their skygazing. The light-green Moon loomed over the city, shining like the entity's eyes. It promised otherworldly knowledge and terrible secrets. It promised progress. It promised change. In that moment, Kiona couldn't have imagined anything more beautiful. “Shades of the Moon, huh?” she said, smiling a bit. It had a nice ring to it.
