《12:22》twenty-five

"A two hour drive?" August asked us, we all gave him an 'yeah I thought you knew' look and continued to load another luggage into the trunk of the car.

I watched as a familiar pair of inked arms took the bag from me, looking up to see him dressed in a tight black short sleeve t-shirt and jeans, it reminds me of the first time we made eye contact at the bar a couple months ago.

"Thanks." I muttered as he nodded in response.

Alisha and Viola give him the dirtiest looks that I've ever seen and I have to hold back the urge to bursting into laughter.

As more bags started to come in, we placed them next to one another and shut it closed. The car was big enough to hold the six of us that were going, Ronan was driving and Jackson sat beside him while the rest of us sat in the back rows.

"Are you guys ready?" Ronan questioned as his fingers adjusted around the steering wheel, making more of the veins on his arms visible.

Everyone nods or answers him somehow but he doesn't start the car until his eyes meet mine through the rear view mirror.

It's been a couple minutes since I started driving, I've been making small talk with her friends and stealing glances through the mirror every couple seconds or so.

Her friends don't seem to like me, I don't know what I did or what she told for them to be reacting that way.

I notice how while she talks to her friends I feel

her gaze on me as I drove, if I keep looking at her we're going to get into an accident so I stop.

To be completely honest, the only reason I said yes to coming on this trip was to spend time with her. Yet she hasn't exchanged more than a word with me for the past half hour.

I think I've spoken to her friends more than I have to her at the moment.

I glanced over to Jackson, "You like my sister?"

He looks at me, maybe being slightly caught off guard that I brought it up. He nods in response, a hesitant half smile appearing on his lips.

"How long have you guys known her?" I asked him, looking at her through the mirror again.

"Alisha's known her the longest, but the rest of us have known her for two years."

I want her friends to like me, I can't tell why but I do.

"We were mutual friends and then we started to hang out in groups!" I hear the guy in the back with fluffy black hair chime into the conversation.

I don't say anything and just listen to the others explain, I watched as she began to get more confused.

I haven't spoken to him yet, I don't know why it's so awkward between us when literally nothing has happened.

Did I do something?

It feels as if the only way we're communicating is through eye contact.

We stop at a gas station after an hour passes by and I make my way inside it, I search for a Red Bull.

I bump into a hard chest, looking up to see Ronan. Backing up, he hands me a Red Bull and we head to the register.

Before I could take out my wallet to pay, he had already swiped his card and made his way to the exit door.

"You don't always have to pay." I said as we left the 7-Eleven.

"Oh, so she speaks?"

I roll my eyes and he smirks, I laugh lightly at his remark.

"Your friends aren't really fond of me are they?" He continues to make small talk.

"You're going to have to change their minds then." I replied, not looking back at him and getting into the passenger seat in the back beside August.

August gets out of the back and instead offers to drive, my brows furrow and instead Ronan sits next to me.

He knows what he's doing.

We started to drive again and I felt his gaze on me.

I rolled the windows down and raised myself a little higher to poke my head out to look outside.

My cropped long-sleeve started to rise higher as I sat higher.

The intro to Means Something by Lizzy McAlpine begins to play as I stared out into the painting like-sunset and the continuous rows of mountains.

The strong wind fluttered through my hair that I had put down earlier, my head out the window as I lip-synced to the lyrics of the song.

I saw your name on a street sign, in the middle of nowhere and that has to mean something

I felt his gaze on me as I listened to the song, it was one of my favorites of hers.

But for some reason

You're not here

And I refuse to believe

That means something

After I got down, our gazes locked into one another's for a couple seconds before the car shook and everything was real again.

I felt the way that you hugged me

When I was broken inside

And that has to mean something

The song continues and for the rest of the ride I try to avoid making eye contact with him.

I felt the way that you kissed me

When we got too drunk that night

And that had to mean something

My thigh brushes his and I freeze, he looks at me and I can't do anything but return the favor. Shit.

Every time I think too much

It ends up crazy

I don't know how to not think about you

Why am I connecting this song to him? No. This is so stupid and he probably isn't even thinking the same.

Do you think it means something

That I wrote another song about you?

The song ends to change to another that I don't know of so I continue to look at her while she fixed fallen strands of her hair.

I couldn't stop staring at her, fuck. Watching as she counted the lines on the inside of her palm.

How the color of her jewelry was always coordinated with her outfits and the small freckles around her eyes that she doesn't cover up.

Everyone but me sang, mostly screamed the lyrics to the next song.

I watched Inez sing along with the rest of her friends, it was nice to see her more calm than she usually is when she's working.

The song ends and uncomfortable silence fills the air, she laughs and glances at me. The right corner of my lip turns up in amusement and her laugh slowly stops and fades.

A couple minutes pass and her head falls on my left shoulder, she's asleep. I contemplate moving her head away but rest mine on top of hers.

I move a smaller part of her hair that had fell due to the the cold breeze and shut my eyes closed.
